The Virginia State University, like no other. As a rising junior, honors student, biology major with a minor in math, a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated as well as a social organization, my experience has been great! I have bonded with so many people and shared great experiences with my professors. Because I am an out-of-state student and 5 to 6 hours away from the university, it was a little hard adjusting however because of the warm atmosphere and friendly students, it did not take long to adjust. Virginia State University is a very family oriented university. The professors are wonderful and have a genuine care for their students. The Biology Department and the Mathematics Departments are two great departments at the school and are involved with their students to make sure they are afforded many opportunities. These departments may be tough at times but the professors are there to help. My advise to prospective students is to not overlook Virginia State University. It is a wonderful university, from academics to social life. There are so many organizations (academic or social) to be involved in that will interest all students. It's a good college at a fair location. Keep in mind that this is a community college and not a four year college. It isn't going to carry the same weight as a true four year college, both with the degrees that it provides and the teaching level administered. The college is clean enough and they are doing some work to being up some of the buildings more to standard. The Midlothian campus is better, but this one presents a prime location being directly off the highway. They have several computer labs and every teacher I've had has been fair and engaged with students to an acceptable degree (academically). The VA expert nice woman who knows her job well. They have changed from when I first graduated high school but the headaches are still there. Advisors sometimes are confused themselves and aren't of much help. Financial aid is best to deal with in person. Campus is closed together and easy to walk around. Professors are some good and some not. Bathrooms are always clean and that's a good thing. There's a lack of information for clubs, programs and such. They have a catalog of jobs and careers but they don't offer half the classes. Classes fill in quickly and sometimes you can't find one of the ones you need for your program. I graduated with my lpn at standard college in august 2015, and im now working on my RN at standard. The instructors have a lot of nursing experience and give you great nursing knowledge you will use on the nclex and while at work. The instructors and administration are very willing to help students and often provide extra tutoring IF YOU ASK for it. The curiculem is VERY challanging. standard college is for students who are focused, hardworking, and motivated to study study and study. If you want to build a knowledge base that will help to make you an excellent nurse then standard is for you. The cirriculem is challenging but you are told that at orientation and at the admissions interview many times. The school is serious about graduating educated nurses who will go into the career and keep patients safe. 80% is needed to pass each class. Its challenging but IT CAN BE DONE! I was referred to Standard College by a friend who graduated from the program and spoke very highly of the school. My experience in the nursing program thus far has been very positive (about to graduate). They provide lots of support to the students, including small group tutoring which is very helpful. You do need an 80% to pass the program, but this is made very clear during orientation. With all the resources and additional support that is provided, I am having no problem maintaining above 85% in each course.Shebna Jackson

Looking for another degree or to switch careers and thinking of South University, well wipe the from your memory. The education you will receive here is subpar. Why do I say this? The professors race through teaching the curriculum so that you can complete the degree on 18-20 months. When this happens, students are not learning information to retain. Students are memorizing information. Better yet, many of the students cheat to pass so that they won't get put out of their programs. When students report those cheating, it goes in one ear of the staff and out the other ear. How is it fair to those students who are actually studying and not cheating to earn lower grades than those cheaters? When students are going to the professors telling them the students are cheating, why is this constantly being overlooked? Why isn't the President or Dean doing something about it? If your average is 69.9999, the professor rounds it down to a 69 and not round up to a 70. Honestly, these are some of the most no mathematical people I've ever seen. You learn how to round numbers in elementary school but a college professor round simple numbers. If you decide to go to the nursing program and decide not to heed my warning, then stay away from LINDA PECK'S class. She teaches one thing in class and tests on something totally different. You're better off teaching yourself rather than going to her class. She lows students to cheat in her class and even sees it for herself and does nothing. While the class portal shows how to calculate grades, Linda has her own way of calculating grades. If you're not Caucasian, then she will discriminate against you in any and every way that she can think of. The Dean and other higher officials let her do whatever she wants. A good professor or educator for that matter wants to see students succeed. Linda likes to see how many people she can fail. What Linda needs to remember is that she wouldn't want what she's doing to students to be done to her. While the university has recently filed bankruptcy, they failed to tell the current students. Many students found out by it appearing in news publications on the web. The great professors have been let go and staff like Linda remain to wreak havoc on her current and future students. I don't want any medical professional to work on me that has cheated their way through school. Hence, the very reason you should consult beforehand. Don't forget to check those medical licenses. If you're a minority, you want to skip South University as they allow current students to post racial slurs etc in social media. When it is brought to the attention of the school no one says anything. There is limited parking. Many students park at Whole Foods. Therefore, actual Whole Foods customers don't have anywhere to park. If you're a current student, keep complaining about the wrongdoings of the university. Better yet, take it to the head of South University in Georgia. If I could rate this so called university with negative stars, I would. Rushing through a degree and not learning anything is NOT a quality education. It's just all about quantity and how many students can get robbed paying these exorbitant fees and get further in debt while doing so. If you don't know, now you know. After going to MCI for nursing a few years ago and having such a bad experience (they weren't even accredited and teachers didn't seem to care about your well being and success), South has been such a breath of fresh air. They are accredited by CAPTE, every professor has received their Doctorate, and they truly and whole heartedly care about your success and well being. Choosing Excel Health Institute for my CNA is probably the most correct decision that I've made all year. Mrs. Ellen is easily one of the best instructors that I've ever had. Instead of just telling you what to do, she actually explains the reasoning behind concepts and is engaging with her students. She encourages you to ask questions in class, which is great for reinforcing the material. Mrs. Ellen goes above and beyond and truly cares about the success of each of her students. The DHEC is hands down the best place to get your foot in the door with nursing. Ms. Gigi is the absolute most amazing teacher ever. She is tough and does not accept late work or excuses, she is NOT the one to play with, but she makes her expectations and love for the field as well as her students abundantly clear from the second you meet her, not to mention she is hilariously funny! If you do the work, use the tools she gives you, and put in the effort, the courses are designed for you to truly learn and excel, pass your boards and be on the way to becoming a great nurse. I took the CNA class, and even in the middle of the pandemic, she made sure to always keep open and honest communication in a timely manner. I attended this school for their nursing program in 2016 and I'm giving 4\5 stars for my personal experience. Most of the instructors were really great. They really cared about teaching us and made sure that we left understanding what was taught that day. Of course, there was a few instructors where we had to teach ourselves but I feel like you will get that with any school you go to. Another pro I'd like to add is that they give you TONS of resources to study and learn because they really don't want you to fail. I felt like this school gave everyone a fair chance to pass, but I also felt like some of the students shouldn't have been allowed to stay; they are almost too forgiving with their students. Another piece of advice I'd like to add is DO NOT TAKE YOUR PREREQUISITES AT THIS SCHOOL. IT IS COMPLETE WASTE OF TIME AND MONEY BECAUSE THEY ARE NOT ACCREDITED AND YOU WILL HAVE TO RETAKE THEM WHEN YOU WANT TO GET YOUR BSN. Don't waste your time and money. Had my legs waxed – girl NEVER pulled skin taunt (this is waxing 101) – two hours of torture. The wax was far from HOT enough – there was a big clump of wax in the jar she worked from. Hair was just broken off so it was all back a week later. I paid $85.00 for the privilege!!!! Went back to have other work done and because I was seven minutes late (45 minute drive in and hit every red light) they refused to treat me……….. NOT professional – do NOT know what they are doing!!! I tried to resolve this with management – no return call from a Miss Helen! Plus I thought about calling the Health Department since the receptionist had skin hanging from her face both appointments. She had a peel done – which is fine but why not have it done on Thursday afternoon so that when the skin starts shedding everywhere (including on the items she hands you) she can be home for the weekend. I recommend the RN program 100%. Great school and knowledgeable instructors. Took my NCLEX within 3weeks of graduating and passed! They definitely prepare you to be a successful nurse. Words of advice based on my experience here: The RN program is VERY FAST PACED. Please do not think you will succeed in the program while working full time or even part time work depending on your type of work or depending on what you can handle academically. Other parts of your life will likely suffer as well…family, personal and health. Lastly, this is an expensive program. So if you don’t have the time to dedicate, you will end up wasting your time and money. However, in the end, it’s so worth it! You will be in and out so quickly, you won’t realize what hit you until you have graduated. But again, so worth it!! Go for it! You can do it! Office building is easy to find. Parking is spacious and plentiful with lots of spaces very close to the entrance. The staff is courteous and professional. I love the check in online option, it's the only office I know of that truly checks you in online and all you have to do is let them know you've arrived. You can even upload your insurance cards. I had 2 tests scheduled, I was in the waiting area less than 5 minutes before being called in for the first test. ABI Study was quick, easy and painless. The tech was pleasant and professional. My second test was an echo and after a short wait I was called and escorted to the exam room. My echo tech was fabulous! She immediately put me at ease, she introduced herself and completely explained the procedure, the equipment and how she would perform the test. The conductive jelly was even warm. She took time to do patient education and showed me what she was looking at on the monitor. I got to see my heart valves working and the chambers of my heart, it was very interesting. That test was also guick and painless. She was cheerful and engaged and seems to genuinely enjoy her job and working with patients. Overall an excellent experience.Sue Allen

I’m glad that I listened to the reviews and made an appointment with VA Cardiovascular. The staff are friendly and efficient, and the doctor had good bedside manner. They also let you fill in patient forms online before your appointment so you’re not swamped with paperwork when you check in. The only reason why I put four stars instead of five is that I had to wait 30 minutes on the phone to make an appointment and then over an hour for the appointment itself. Although VA Cardiovascular has an online patient scheduling form, it doesn’t allow you to actually make an appointment. It’s just an info form and a scheduler is supposed to call you back in two business days. But nobody called me so I had to call in. At least the hold music is fairly pleasant.Mervyn Han

I worked for this place for seven months, as a housekeeper. My first day of orientation, walking in this place…my mouth dropped. This place was so big and beautiful, very clean, very friendly staff who all spoke. I was in orientation for a week, and it felt like a different world, after walking through those doors. I use to say, it felt like Serenity. After my orientation, the following week I started working. Just like any other housekeeping job. There were housekeepers with attitudes, who felt like they were better, who wasn’t welcoming, who was bossy. Something I was use to, and could handle. The way they acted wasn’t shocking, but I was a little disappointed. That in a place like this, where everyone else seemed so friendly and welcoming, the housekeepers were on BULL. Time went by, and I started to see people true colors. The staff wasn’t as friendly as before. A lot of people stopped speaking or never spoke. These people I always spoke to first. In orientation, they expect for everyone to speak to each other. So I still spoke anyway, until I got tired of speaking first. Sometimes I only got a smile, no words spoken back. So I eventually stopped speaking to everyone, unless I knew they would speak back. Plus, I remembered Kim Deihl (housekeeping supervisor) said in orientation that people really showed how they felt for black people, once Covid hit. That she saw who was racist. Kim Deihl is another who showed her true colors. My daughter wasn’t feeling well already, my mom text to tell me she threw up. I asked my mom to call her Doctor to see if I can bring her in after work, but if I had to bring her in before, I was going to get off early. I called Kim from the phone on the floor I was cleaning, to let her know the situation. She said she were busy at the moment. She came to my floor, while I was in the middle of cleaning, and told me to come to her office right after. I did just that, she wasn’t in there. I told my coworker who also worked on my floor the situation, in case they had her clean my side. I also told her, I tried letting Kim know. Our phone has to be on silent while on the floor. So I have to keep checking my phone. I checked during lunch, and my mom texted that the Doctor want me to take my child to urgent care or the hospital, because she’s dehydrated. I called Kim again to let her know I have to go, she wanted me to come to her office. I did, I told her everything, and what the Doctor said. She mumble to her self “urgent care so it’s not an emergency” I was shock that she would say that, that the only thing she heard was urgent care, but not the hospital part. Instead of her letting me leave right then and there, she’s steady was questioning me. Until I spoke words she didn’t want to hear, for her to interrupt me to tell me go. Then she still didn’t care, to the point she was more worried about me putting my cart up, instead of me getting to my child. Worrying about what’s not fair to someone else. I refused, left, and caught the bus. Come to find out, my daughter was diagnosed with diabetes, in the keto stage. She was transported to the hospital, from urgent care in ambulance. She rated in the hospital for five days. After that, I didn’t have no respect for her after how she acted. I stayed out a week, came back, and came back respectfully telling her about herself. That my kids come first, what she said wasn’t right. She lied, saying she didn’t say “so it’s not an emergency.” I worked in health care on the first floor. I loved my residence, and they adored me. I worked the second, and third floor in healthcare also. The second floor, especially the east wing, I call the hood floor. It’s something about that second floor, that is completely different from the first and third floor. A couple of the CNA’s on the first floor treated the residence bad. But that second floor, always had nasty acting CNA’s. On my floor, I told my lead Caroline and my supervisor Kim, about the CNA yelling at a resident, talking to her any kind of way. If you need to speak to someone here about your loved one, good luck to you! I never received any calls back, and the social workers were completely unconnected and not helpful. We were given multiple different answers on our loved ones length of stay, one of which included someone telling us she qualified for at least 100 days and not to be concerned. About a month into her supposed 100 day stay, I got a call saying she was being discharged in 2 days and the social worker asked what my plan was. Since this was unexpected, we had no plan and I asked why we were given no notice. The response was that they normally give 3 days noticed but they “didn’t have their meeting” the day prior. I tried calling them back to discuss, but no one would answer the phone or return my messages and I ended up talking to someone in admissions who was super helpful and got her stay extended for another week. We got a discharge plan and medical transport arranged, but again was unable to reach a social worker to finalize the discharge. I left a message for the Administrator about the issues I had, but she also never called me back. I ended up calling the front desk and asking if I could stay on hold until an actual human, and not a voicemail, was available to speak to me, which was after almost a week and several unreturned calls at this point. The person at the reception desk had to page the social workers over the loud speaker and that was the only way I was actually able to reach them. I got the discharge wrapped up and emailed the social worker to share the timing of the medical transport pick up and other information she asked for, along with several questions. She replied with a confirmation that she’d have our loved one ready, but didn’t answer any of my questions. I emailed her again asking her the questions, and she answered one of them and then I just gave up. Then, she emails me the next day asking for the pickup time, which I reminded her was in the original email I had sent. Then the real win was when she called me and said “oh by the way, your loved one doesn’t really have to leave today.” on the day she was being discharged. I asked why the other social worker called and said that if my loved one didn’t leave, we’d start paying $400-$500 PER DAY and she didn’t have a response and just asked if I wanted to extend the stay another week. I obviously did not, because unfortunately this was just one of the several issues I had during this stay. Other issues included our loved fall falling out of her bed, to which the nurse said “I didn’t know she could move like that to get up.” and a ridiculous number of unreturned calls. We plan to file a complaint with Medicare as it is completely unacceptable to not be able to talk to a facility about your loved ones care, especially during a pandemic which visitation is limited.Brooke Sullivan

My grandparents recently moved in here – nice and large place. Accommodating flat. However, the step into the “walk-in” shower I don’t see as fit for seniors and the sliding doors are a pain to get open. The reception has proved unhelpful in an urgent situation where my grandma had to call an ambulance for my grandpa. There’s a rule where in case of emergency WC has to know beforehand. I’m not entirely sure on all the rules but it was upsetting for my grandma. Hopefully they can be more helpful if another situation occurs. Also, the ATM machine has a fee of $3 which is annoying. I think there’s a lack of available staff monitoring the place – I worry for people who may fall or injure themselves and they are alone in one of the halls for a while. Other than that my grandparents have settled in well enough but could do with a little more help from the general staff. The home health team though are amazing – especially Shannon, Elyse and Megan – they are incredibly patient, helpful and good at their jobs.Charlie Smith

I use to like this school. I am a student who does not have her degree because of 700 balance, usually they say before you end the senster or even the start.When I re-enrolled with financial aid they never said it was a balance from a prior semester. My graduate year was last year, 2020 can you imagine how hard it was not having a ceremony, then not being able to pick up my degree I worked hard for because of $700. Two and half years of hard work and I don’t have my degree. I am not impressed by that especially during a pandemic when money is tight for everyone.ashley garland

Currently in the nursing program and not really impressed with the professionalism of the instructors. Mrs. Everheart is an example of someone who should have chosen a different career path, perhaps working in a bar or maybe a job in the shipyard would be more suitable for this person as she is crass, rude and woefully ill equipped to teach and give future nurses the knowledge and the all important skills needed to be effective and therapeutic caregivers. Hopefully in the future, Bryant and Stratten will be able to hire and retain experienced educators and phase out the ignorant and under-qualified instructors resulting in mass drop out and failing students due to poor teaching.brittany britton

DO NOT go to this school. You will regret it. I was enrolled in the nursing program and the instructor that I had, Juliette Gretzler, couldn't teach, was unprofessional, and not helpful at all. I needed help in one of my classes and couldn't get any assistance from her. When I would ask her a question or ask for help she was rude and sarcastic. I had a horrible experience at this school. It's also extremely expensive. You can get your education somewhere else that's cheaper. If you're thinking about going to this school go somewhere else. Last year, I graduated with an associates degree in accounting. It was a struggle but I have made it through. Majority of the classes are online. Some of the online teachers were full of it. I would love for their curriculum to have QuickBooks, Sage and update to date software. I see why its hard for me to get a career in this field. Most jobs demend experiences in those softwares. I invested in so much time and money into this degree. At the end, still have the same job and a mountain of student loans. Well thats life. Future students, Study and maintain your GPA.
