20 Best Acting Programs In Provo, UT (2022 Updated)

Does anyone get the feeling that many of these 5 star reviews are ingenuine? I attended Provo College for 2 semesters in 2011. I believe at the time they only offered an Associates for nursing, not a BSN. The tuition was very expensive, but they sit you down 1 on 1 with someone who gets you started on loans. At the time it seemed great that they were so helpful, but l later realized it was benefitting them more than me…which is why they make that part of the process so easy for students. I ended up leaving because the financial aid ended after 2 semesters and I didn't want $60k of debt for a 2 year nursing degree. The other thing that I didn't like was even though I was paying them insane tuition, they would have us come to a classroom for remote learning from Utah State University. This means you might take a math course from them and pay 3 grand, or however much it costs for one class, but you are basically doing it online/remote through USU…but you're paying way more than if you just went to USU. I later went to UVU and was able to compare the anatomy course I did at PC versus what students said it was like at UVU, and the course at UVU held students to a much higher standard. After a short personal experience at this college, and the ability to compare it to the other colleges I've attended, I wouldn't recommend it.Derek Drennan

I am about to finish my first year of nursing school. I have really enjoyed my experience here at Provo College. One of the the many things that I like about this program is the faculty. The faculty really gets to know you and you aren't just another number in the classroom. Each of them know me personally and even call me by my nickname. The faculty really wants you to succeed in the program. Tudors are made available to you if you are having problems in a course at no extra cost to you. Currently as a nursing program we are working on a service project, where we are making blankets for a local pediatrics unit. This is a great program that I would highly recommend! Provo College is such a great school!! The faculty, staff, and program administrators are totally invested in the students. I felt a genuine sense of caring from everyone there the first time I visited the campus- even the campus president took time to introduce himself and get to know me a little. The nursing program is amazing – all of my friends in the program had great internships, passed the NCLEX test the first time and have found fantastic jobs they love. The other programs are amazing also. I can't say enough good about this school!!!Staci

School here is nice and if you need something cheap, but UVU reinforces the comment that "University education is becoming less valuable." Half my professors were either teaching here their first time, didn't speak English, or had no expertise in their subject. I passed 2 years of credits by watching videos and drawing pictures during class: not because I'm smart, but because there was no content. Like in high school, many of the professors have 30% percent of their grade centered around attendance. Not participation, but attendance. So yes, I ignored class because everything I needed for an A was provided online. I'm typing this now during Philosophy class, and I am not missing anything. Books are hardly ever used but are "required" according to the professors. They gather dust on my shelf. Most problems here need to be fixed across the nation not just UVU, but I am a very frustrated student in my twenties because I don't know where my money is going. Teachers aren't happy with pay and all have second jobs. The building and resources are really really nice but I rarely need to use them since the internet was invented. UVU in general education has the same quality as Khan Academy except here, there is a physical address they want you to come to. There is a good range of food options but mostly crowded into the same building. Parking is ridiculous and there is no reason to pay $90 a year for the clustered insanity that the school created. Use the darn money to hire a civil engineer for God's sake. Once you pass general education and focus in to better classes, the rooms get nicer and the teaching quality doubles. Don't come here if you're not willing to graduate. Location is fine other than the city planning on the busiest road outside. If you're coming from the south east your drive will be dangerous, traffic is terrible and construction has been in effect for 4 years now. Very annoying. Train station is very convenient and is likely your best choice if you have a transportation method to your nearest station. Students who work feel punished because rent in the area is high, and pay low. Scholarships are handed to those without jobs first, those who aren't working for rent and tuition are the ones handed money from the school. Afternoon/Night classes are poor in options and schedule so working at a volatile job is ever more of a punishment. (Data from a few friends and strangers) Many activities, but the activities most advertised in my buildings were focused for helping women, about guest speakers, for the LGBT community, or cost $15. So I've never been to one, though free lectures and speeches are common. Overall, UVU focuses on medium-to-low education and welcoming everyone with open arms. But once you're here, you may want to transfer to BYU or drop out entirely.Isaac Benge

Coming here was the best decision I have ever made. Every single professor cares about my learning and the fact that the average class size is 23 (I’ve never had a class over 25) makes it so my teachers know me, know my name, know what type of student I am, and some even came to my wedding! I have also been incredibly impressed with the resources. You would have to TRY to fail at UVU, because they truly make it so easy to succeed. From job resources, free tutoring, professor office hours, financial aid and scholarships, and everything in between I honestly feel like every single person I talk to wants me to succeed. The campus is amazing and INDOORS like seriously it is the best part of campus. Shorts in the winter and pants in the summer. Sure parking can be hard, but you are 100% going to find that at any university and it is really only bad after 10am so if you have classes before that you will be fine. The social life is great and the activities are fun and well attended. Free food at all times and tons of on campus food options. I honestly feel like the education I received is worth a million times more than what the tuition is (one of the lowest in the nation for a university). UVU focuses on Engaged Learning, or learning by doing, and most my classes don’t even have textbooks or tests, just projects and resume building it’s amazing. Add that to the fact that it is open enrollment and you can see why it is the largest university in the state. Seriously. Come take a tour at least and see how awesome UVU is.Justine Rupprecht

In all honesty do NOT go here, if you have a better option do not come to this college, it is a over glorified high school. They aren't too expensive which is nice, but they charge many other ways, you must pay to take tests if you are not there the first day, they offer no flexibility when taking classes especially if you are working full time. The professors are 50/50 you either get great ones that work with you, answer quickly to your emails, and are awesome. Or you get awful ones that only two kids pass their class, they will put you on academic probation which I don't get because I am paying to go to school here, so why does it bother them if I failed one class because the professor was awful. In all honesty if you have a better option DO NOT GO HERE! I have never been so frustrated with a school before in my life.Kyra McMillan

Pretty awful education experience. The vast majority of professors are terrible teachers. In fact, it's apparent they care more about their research that the school funds, than the actual students and the material they are teaching. So many teachers seem to have the mindset that "Oh, if these students aren't as passionate about this topic as I am, they are going to fail." Of course, there are a few incredible teachers, but they are few and far between. Not to mention, that a large population of the students act extremely entitled and judgy. Kinda of ironic, considering the school is owned and funded by a church that claims to have the most accurate understanding of Jesus Christ. Attending the school is incredibly cheap, however, to which I will praise. The opportunity to make it through school without any debt is a massive help for many. That being said, plan on changing your major multiple times, because almost every program is extremely competitive and very very difficult to get into. This is a school where dreams are quite literally crushed under the weight of academic pressure and prestige.Jacob Heiner

AMAZING!!! BYU runs one of the largest, if not the largest, comprehensive summer youth sports program in the country. They consistently draw student athletes from all over Utah, the Intermountain West, The Unites States and even have a number of international athletes every year. We have sent our own kids for 5+ years in multiple sports. They love it!! They love the week long sport specific camps, the housing option, the friends, camp counselors, student coaches, meals at the Canon Center and ice cream at the creamery store. This is a large campus with a number of different facilities. I love that there is no charge for the Bean museum or the Paleontology museum. The creamery makes just about the BEST I've cream I've ever tasted. The Wilkinson Student Center has a bowling alley and am extensive good court and more. Love the Arts center and basically find there is too much here to tell about, but it's worth a visit just to explore the campus. Love the bell concerts at noon.Leona Keesling

The Pioneer theater is a nice spot to see a live show. The theater itself is on the small side so you'd be hard pressed to find a bad seat. The theater is in the middle of the U of U campus so parking can be unpleasant as there isn't a dedicate lot for the theater. There were refreshments available in the lobby during intermission, but the lobby is pretty cramped with only a few chairs. The prices for the show we attended were pretty high for the quality of the venue and production which were average to slightly below average. I'd recommend this theater, but you can probably find better options if you look around. There are better quality theaters in and around Salt Lake for a lower price.Dustin Klein

We're new to the area, so this was our first time ar Pioneer Theater and we were excited and glad to experience yet another great theater option in the Salt Lake Valley. The facility was excellent with great sound, lighting, and seating, and the production was outstanding! I really enjoy going to the place here, you sit close it's not that crowded and the plays are usually very good with great performers. I actually prefer it over the eccles Center which is way too large. In fact I think the best shows I've seen have been at the Pioneer theater better than anything I've seen it Eccles it's a better stage and a better set upscott crandall

I have been a school counselor at Merit Academy for 8 years. It is an excellent school and students who come here have many opportunities they would not have in larger schools. For example, a student can be involved in a play, while participating in service and leadership opportunities, and also participate in a sport. Students have the opportunity to earn an Associate's Degree while in high school. Due to our smaller class sizes, teachers know students personally and are here to help them succeed. We have a caring principal who is invested in helping all of our students pass their classes and graduate. My three oldest children attend here and love it. I highly recommend this school to anyone who wants their education to be an intimate experience.Scott Jenkins

(read whole thing to understand the 5 star review) I love this school mainly because there is almost no bullying but it is also a filthy trash hole its is that kinda school that you love because it is a dump and I quote one of the students there said "This school is such piece of trash but this school is my piece of trash and I love it here". All jokes aside this a is definitely a nerdy school if you have a nerdy child that gets picked on for being different and weird you should definitely send them to merit the kids here are very nice the teachers are great and Ms. Coons the person that bascily runs the school is awesome. My family loves Merit. The curriculum is rigorous, the teachers are excellent and experienced, and the students have the opportunity to build a college-ready education. Administration empowers and supports teachers to be creative and challenge students with unique project-based learning experiences–the Renaissance Fair was amazing and Quiz Knight was lively! Opportunities for service-learning include Merit's "Meal for Mtulu" and HopeSquad. Finally, no review would be complete without mentioning Chef Sharon's exquisite cuisine–her artisan breads and cinnamon rolls are to die for!James Hirst

This place is a wonderful beautiful Mall at the entrance to the mall the main entrance is a beautiful fountain with a blue starry sky ceiling. As you go into the mall you instantly see all the attractions and things for the children are placed in the mall for kids to play over this fairy land enclosure. Children are on these makeshift animals of pandas and lions and bears and driving these animals around the mall it is so cute to see the kids do this and and go right by you. Everywhere you look there's something for the children there is a place that you can go and experience what it's like to be in a hurricane. If you want to relax you can go over and sit down in these chairs that give you a massage. This theater has so many movies playing I believe there's 16 theaters. The food court is the most amazing place I have found and go there almost daily it hasn't opened half circle bay windows that look out onto the Wasatch mountains you can without charge go to these huge binoculars and look out into the mountainous regions that are covered with snow. If you want to take someone out for lunch this is a beautiful place to go you cannot go wrong by at least stopping by to see the place is kept exceptionally clean and plenty of parking it's also has free access on the uvx bus that drops you right off in front of JCPenney's.Brian Mott

Aside from having a Mall Cop walk up to me Infront of my girls, and stop me from taking pictures of my daughter's by the water fountain after throwing our change in there, because apparently it's illegal to take pictures at the mall? Update! Taking pictures at The Provo Mall is permitted. Very well kept and clean mall but very empty of any actual useful or fun stores. There are a lot of store fronts that are just offices or places that really shouldn't be in a mall like a travel agency and supplement store, ECT. But it is fun to walk around and see the good stores such as Spencer's or Zumiez and eat some good food. I highly highly recommend trying the Beri Beach frozen yogurt and ice cream place right across from the movie theater. It's just one kind man that makes the frozen yogurt and he makes it really good. I’ve seen maybe upwards of 150 performances here in my short life of 14 years. Every single performance is absolutely incredible. This theater literally raised me and has shaped such a huge piece of who I am. Most Recently at this theater, I went 7 times to see sound of music. I saw opening night so it only made sense to see closing too. Because of the small size, the feeling in this theater on closing night was absolutely unmatched. Being surrounded by people who love theater as much as you do is such an incredible feeling. I was sobbing the whole night just enjoying the show by myself. This theater is amazing.June Wiley

We were in town and saw Camelot. At first, I was hesitant due to the size of the theatre. (We are in Arizona and the Gilbert theatre is much bigger.) But the actors did a great job! The singing, acting, costumes, etc were all top notch. Parking was fine and will call quick. A bit narrow entrance area. Our seats in 3rd row south were excellent. Easy to exit when snow was over. This Orem location always has high quality, family friendly, entertaining shows. I have been going for 20 years and I have never been disappointed. It is theater in the round, meaning seats are all around the stage (usually 3 sides) and you are very close to the actors. If you are scared of spit, stay away from the front row! There's no other place like this in Provo, maybe in Utah County period. I've been to see 3 of their shows now and my boyfriend and I just decided to get season tickets (which were VERY reasonably priced). It's not a fancy venue–a tiny store-front in the Provo mall–but they put on a damn good show. If you had told me when I moved here 10 years ago that I'd ever be able to watch Angels in America or The Drag in Provo I wouldn't have believed you. By all means, if you're still excited about watching 7 Brides for 7 Brothers for the 5th time in as many years, let your freak flag fly, but if you want to watch an expertly produced show in an intimate venue that attracts some stellar local talents in a place that celebrates the misfits, this is your place.Jessica Myer (Jess)

We have been to two different performances presented by An Other Theater Company and they were both outstanding. The theater creatively makes use of an old Radio Shack store at the mall making for a unique and almost interactive experience. The production and cast have been high quality and the shows are very thought-provoking and not your typical theater being performed in the area. An unusual space for a theater, but they've made it into a fantastic and intimate space to enjoy plays. Their mission as a theater company is to perform plays that aren't usually seen in Utah Valley, particularly focusing on centering women and LGBTQIA+ folks as playwrights, directors, actors, and designers. UPDATE after business response below: This shows what type of business this is and how it’s run. ————- Maybe we just had a bad instructor, she looked to be 17 (and likely the granddaughter of the man taking our money). It was july 2. We walked out. She wasn’t speaking to everyone; she was having everyone tie their own harness and no one understood what she was saying. She didn’t acknowledge us. We had a 6 year old with us and she offered no help. She couldn’t have cared any less. Usually with other ropes courses/zip line, the instructors will put everyone in their harness and tie the ropes to ensure safety. At other places, the instructors are speaking and explaining everything to group so that everyone can hear. At other places, it’s organized and safety is paramount. This girl was none of this. We couldn’t believe how disorganized it was and that everyone was standing around trying to figure out how to tie their own ropes and everyone was confused and looking at her, trying to hear what she was saying. She saw us and we were obviously confused and had a child and she never acknowledged us or offered help. The first thing my husband said when we walked up before we even started was, “I don’t think I want to entrust my safety and our son’s safety to this girl.” I agreed. We still stayed a bit longer to see if things got better but after no acknowledgement of us having a young child and no one being able to hear her, yet she kept talking, and after no offers to help and having to tie your own ropes…we walked out. The grandfather (assuming) tried to stop us as we left, but we told him She wasn’t a qualified instructor (at least not what we were used to with other companies) and that she couldn’t have cared less. He didn’t even offer a refund of the $115 we had just paid. We got in car and drove to Park City’s Olympic Village. We’ve done the zip line and obstacle course with our son over there and the instructors are very hands-on and they are securing your equipment for you and explaining everything very well and very organized.I suggest everyone do the same. Plus, in Park City, you aren’t at someone’s house, on their private land — this place is Mom-n-Pop shop. Definitely not somewhere to trust the safety of my kid.farrah sczykutowicz

Worst experience for my 13 year old daughter and her friend. They did the zip line ropes course. It was for her Birthday party. So the expense was NOT cheap! The staff/aka family members were completely rude. She is a little scared of heights and when they walked across the ropes bridge the kid behind kept getting after them to hurry and go. He kept mentioning to them that they were on a time crunch. But then he stepped on HER rope on the rope bridge 100+ feet tall and she panicked (Even though she was harnessed). Also! NO refund! I have it all on video. I think they need to tell their children/staff to be patient and kind. We will never be back. I’m trying to get the word out. It’s NOT SAFE! Unfortunately this place is not what it seems to be. My experience I had there was similar to a cow at a farm. We were not able to eat When we wanted. We were not able to drink when we wanted. Most of all we were not able to relieve ourselves when we wanted. At least at a farm the cows can relieve whenever. So in some cases the cow farm was better. I have never seen a more rude, selfless, degenerate human being in my lifetime. The amount of disrespect shown to my family and I was overwhelming. I've been a professional actor since 1991, and STARS Talent Studio is one of the BEST agents I've had. I'm represented in three different markets (Denver, CO, Albuquerque, NM and Utah) and I never knew Utah had the level of talent or opportunities for actors – a wonderful discovery I might add! I would TOTALLY recommend this place for any event. It helps destress and is so entertaining! You will laugh in a way you had forgotten! They make up the stage lights, the background music, their lines, and the songs in the fly!!! The cast knows how to bring the audience to laugh and also make a good story! A lot of improv groups are given a prompt, but they forget it when they are in the full swing of performing their story. These guys include the prompt, and the story works so well!! Their plot twists are incredible, and it is beautiful cause you can see that they are having so much fun!! There may be other places that do musical sketch comedy, but ImprovBroadway is high quality. I have been here twice. I thoroughly enjoyed it both times. The theater is intimate but the talent is great. I definitely plan to go back. It’s a fun place to visit. I’ve been to comedy sportz on center street as well which is also great, but I think I prefer this one. Improv songwriting and storytelling is a whole different level of thinking on your feet. My 7yo son is in a ballroom dance class as well as a hip hop class with them. We assume everything is going alright with hip hop, but about 2 weeks ago they called us up to tell us that my son didn't know the ballroom routine well enough to participate in the recital (this week Friday – super short notice). Normally, I think I could swallow this and accept that maybe my son wasn't focused during class well enough, or isn't a natural fit. But, he's been doing it for a year with the class, and they don't allow us to sit in on the class and observe how our kids are doing. We also cannot see how the teachers are teaching. Over the last 2 months (long before we got the call about not performing), when we've picked him up and asked how he liked the class, he's shifted to not enjoying it and the primary reason he's given us multiple times is that "they spent the whole time working with the girls today". I don't feel like this studio runs things well in a way that tries to lift people up and include them. The policy to restrict any observation of the class is ludicrous (makes me so upset). Oh and with the news that he wouldn't be performing, they said he didn't need to come to class if he didn't want to. "Thanks!" And yet, we still got billed for May. Also, the parking lot situation both up and downstairs (behind the building) is NUTS. It's really crowded and can get 100% blocked from time to time. This studio may be really great for some forms of dances and teams, especially if you have a girl who is a fledgeling star. But if you have a boy and/or you've got any inkling they're not made of super star material, they'll probably not fit in. We love Center Stage! When I first walked into Center Stage four years ago to see what it was like, I immediately felt at home! Center Stage has made it possible for both of my daughters to experience so many different styles of dance. They have classes ranging from jazz, ballet, tap, hip hop, break dancing, ballroom, tumbling, cheerleading, musical theater and vocal. Children can start taking classes at age 2 all the way into the adult classes they offer. The staff and teachers are AMAZING!!! My daughters still love seeing their teachers who taught them when they first started. They’ve been able to make lasting friendships with girls who they get to dance with both on the competitive side and just in regular classes! When I think about my daughters dancing, I want to make sure they are first, having FUN!!! And second, being taught well! This may come at a higher price then some of your local companies in UT Valley, but this is a Nationally Know Studio who have produced some of the best dancers out there! I recommend this studio to everyone and I’m proud my family gets to be apart of the Center Stage family!Annamoriah Ward

This place is a joke! We paid the money to do a drop-in class. Went to the class, but no teacher for 20 minutes. Kids were running around with no supervision. We went to the front desk to ask for a refund. The girl at the front desk took off for a good 5 minutes. Then came back saying there will be a teacher. We were not interested in wasting any more time, would still like a refund. She said, "only the owner can do that and she just left". Called later to get refund was told it would be refunded. Overall this was a great experience. We went to see a musical. We bought tickets to sit in reserved chairs in front but if you choose to buy the cheaper outer sections for blankets or chairs, you can totally get there early enough to be in front like we were at a fraction of the price….and the prices for the reserved seating were already good value. The concessions were actually a lot cheaper than I was expecting. It’s like $2 for a hot dog and $3 for a large popcorn. They also had pizza and sandwiches and dippin dots, ice cream, dole whip, candy, soft pretzels etc all really well priced.Ellen Wheeler

Sound of Music featured high quality reproductions of Anti-semitic flags with no moment of rememberence for those effected by the Holocaust. Disgusted that money went to produce these flags without actively condemning the groups that still use them as a hate symbol. No problem saying no to Scera. I don't want my money supporting that. Hope they burn these flags after the show.Ali M

Nice venue with good entertainment. However, difficult entrance and exit to navigate due to extremely steep hill and grass. Especially hard navigating when you have to rent your own chair and carry it to where you're going to sit. On the flip side, difficult carrying it back up the hill after the show.Rl C

My husband & I came & saw The Sound of Music & absolutely LOVED IT! 🙌😊We just SO WISH IT WOULD BE PUT ON AGAIN OR EVEN NEXT YEAR for our family & friends& “us” to see again!!👏Well done the music was fabulous & Maria & Captain were so great, love that they’re a real husband& wife & their beautiful portrayal! My daughter and I watched Scarlet Pimpernel and were amazed at the quality of the production. Acting was impressive and the audio was so great you could hear all the inflection in voices and didn't miss anything. We felt like it was much better than another nearby open-air theater we often attend. We really can't say enough good things about how professional the show was. We loved our field trip to the Scera Shell!! It was our first field trip in 2 years. Not only were we able to watch an amazingly professional show, but the cast of actors were able to spend some time answering questions after the performance for my students. We were really impressed with the backdrops, the costumes, the musical abilities, and acting in general. Wow!! They even went over the top with giving my students a snack. My students were over the moon excited!! What a treat! We will definitely come back and are super grateful for this wonderful experience. I do costume design for film and frequently end up with more than I can manage at home. The SCERA has always appreciated my donations, and it makes me feel good to see them worn in various productions. As a non-profit, I can also get a tax deduction, which is so helpful with all the sewing I do on these costumes. Our daughter is an actor and world-class mezzo-soprano who wore many of these over the years. Saw A Christmas Story last night and loved it! The actors were all talented and I was especially blown away by all of the child actors. Ralphie was amazing and the little girl who played one of the bullies stole the show! They put a lot of detail into the props and sets and even had real dogs on stage. In the restaurant scene, the family was actually eating real food- I just loved the attention to realistic detail that I haven't always seen at other theaters. Such a fun show! I want to make seeing this play a Christmas tradition!Sara G

I just watched Treasure Island and it was amazing!! It was incredible how they used the stage and props. The stage was even surrounded by water and it was definitely used. The acting was so good too. I brought 2 of my teenagers with me and they kept saying how much they loved it and how much fun it was. The theater itself is beautiful and so well kept. The staff is friendly and willing to help. I have nev been to a live theater where they allow snacks and drinks inside. So that was definitely a fun bonus. I am so glad we have such amazing quality love theater so close to home.Jennifer Fugal

Awesome performance of "Singing in the Rain" at the Hale Centre Theater. My first time to visit this location and I was bowled over by the fantastic venue, where they, among other amazing stunts and special effects, LITERALLY made it rain during the show – twice! And not just a little splash – full downpour😄 ☔️ Service was friendly, the seats and all facilities were great and I'm already looking forward to future shows here.Anne Frank

This was our first time coming to the Hale Center Theater. I was absolutely amazed at the quality of acting, the atmosphere of the theater, and the special effects! We came here for Singin' In The Rain, and they literally made it rain on the stage for 10 minutes for the iconic song. If you're considering coming, do it- you will not be disappointed!! I love going here with family and friends.The last show I saw here was Egress it was amazing and relevant for the time now. The shows are amazing and the diversity is great too. I have never seen a bad show here. Been going here for years. Love the remodels that have been done as well that Leopard carpet looks great. I can't wait for the Premiere of 'Passing Strange'. One of my favorite performances there was 'Form of a Girl Unknown' and many others. Also, a fan of the kids performances at the end of the year where I take my nieces and nephews. Keep up the great work and bringing these amazing actors/actresses. Amazing talent! I can't say enough good things about SLAC. Amazing theater located in North Salt Lake. My kids loved watching Pete the Cat and have seen several other fun plays over the years! The actors and actresses are very engaging and the question and answer time after the play is so much fun for the kids. Kids also look forward to the sugar cookies which are fantastic and custom-made for each play. There is plenty of parking located just in front of the theater or in the school next-door. Ticket prices are very reasonable and well worth it. We even got to say hello to the SLAC cat who greeted us when we arrived to the theater.S M

Pleasant theatre in a residential quiet neighborhood.. The set was unique and versatile in the way actors changed the scenery to support the show… The show we saw was extremely well acted by the few actors who switched their roles and ages and major themes of the production… Talented singers dancers and clearly capable of showing their diverse roles the respect the creators deserved.. What a pleasant experience at a reasonable price… We will certainly look into the next options as the summer approaches.. Great Job SLAC !!!!dave simpson
