Our mom had dementia for 7 years. In the beginning we needed a bit of companionship for her. Sarah came through and found us a great one! Of course our mom didn’t think she needed help so we stopped. However, in these past 2 years our mom got worse. Sarah guided us with her expert knowledge as we moved her to an assisted living facility. It wasn’t easy, but she guided us through. Unfortunately our mom took a turn for the worse. Sarah amazingly was filling in for the Hospice head. She helped us get our mom home to be with the people she loved and loved her. Covid 19 made this the perfect choice for us. Without her, the nurses and caregivers it never would have happened. We got her home on a Tuesday and she passed away peacefully on Friday. The team at Salus was absolutely fantastic. I contacted them Wednesday night and said we need 24-hour care starting Thursday evening. Denise met with me Thursday morning at my mother's nursing home. She got everything arranged in a short amount of time. The home health workers were really wonderful to work with. Denise made sure that all the workers were familiar with hospice work. They made sure that my mother was looked after and cared for very well. I have to mention one worker in particular – Marilyn. She was amazing beyond what I could have asked for. She has a very caring soul. She knew exactly when to let us have time alone with my mother and when help was needed. She made a difficult situation much easier to deal with. As a social worker in a SNF, I highly recommend Salus Homecare, particularly the San Diego office. They are a great resource for me when discharge planning for my residents who need more assistance than what is provided by traditional home healthcare. They are able to match the client needs to the appropriate care giver to allow the client to live at home as long as possible, and are also able to provide additional care within some SNF, independent, or assisted living settings. IF IT WERE MY FAMILY MEMBER… My father was going home after a trip to the ER, 3 days in the hospital and 3 weeks at a skilled nursing facility. He was 87 and for the first time, we needed to make arrangements to have a caregiver agency provide 24 hour care until he was able to re-orient himself to being at home. Fortunately, a staff member at the facility recommended Amada Senior Care. She told me "If it were my family member, I would choose Amada Senior Care. They are good, honest people, very caring and professional, and they have an excellent reputation." She was absolutely right! My father had caregivers from Amada for over 3 years, 7 days a week for 14-24 hours each day. Fred, Janice, Jonathan and their entire team was amazing! They were diligent in assessing my father's changing needs to ensure that they provided caregivers that were a good fit in terms of skills and experience, and personality. Even when there were wildfires in Oceanside where a significant percentage of their caregivers lived and were being evacuated, Amada quickly identified replacements for my father's team. Nurse Next Door is hands down the best caregiving service I’ve worked with as my almost 5 years as the primary caregiver for my grandmother (Alzheimer’s), and I’ve worked with many. Each caregiver is highly trained and skilled in working with dementia patients – something that is always valued, because it’s not easy to know how to handle the vast array of challenging situations. They handle clients with the utmost care and compassion, go above and beyond in making sure needs are heard and met in a prompt and thorough fashion, and provide an impressive amount of knowledge and resources. I faced an emergency situation in which my grandmother had a non-life-threatening injury that left her needing a higher level of care than I was able to provide alone. With the limited resources I had on my own, Nurse Next Door truly came to our rescue. They quickly scheduled around the clock caregivers, offering me a help not only directly to care for my grandma during her injury, but supported my family and me during this time by offering advice and solutions to help her healing and do the most effective job possible in taking care for her. When it became apparent that she was no longer safe to live at home with me, they helped source out quality placement for her – a task that was very scary to navigate for someone not well-versed in what to look for (and what to look out for) in memory and respite care homes. There was absolutely no doubt we wanted to continue to work with them, and hired them as independent caregivers to come be with her daily in her new residential home. I was recommended to try Nurse next door by a friend in the San Diego area. I live in Washington DC but my grandfather is in San Diego along with some other family members who are too old or busy to properly care for him. Synergy has been caring for my aunt and uncle for the past 4 months. They had to care for my uncle who could not walk and needed transfers and full body hygienic care; they care for my aunt who has dementia yet who also has more energy and stamina than many women half her age; until my uncle died they cared for both of them simultaneously; and when he died they provided indispensable assistance with hospice care. All of this, I might add, during the challenging time of Covid. I live out-of-state and they have been great about staying in touch and alerting me to matters of concern, while also sharing with me moments of joy throughout the day. Synergy Home Care provided a number of excellent caregivers for my mother in law Maria who was diagnosed with Lewy Body Dementia and Parkinson's Disease. I think everyone will agree, finding a caregiver for a loved one is certainly no easy task, and once a decision is made there is much worry that goes along with it. This has been the first time my husband and I have had to delve into the "caregiving business" and, thank heavens, this has ended up being a very positive experience. We hired 24 Hour Home Care to provide round the clock caregiving for my dad after his partial hip replacement. We interviewed three different companies and chose 24 hour for several reasons – they were personable, seemed qualified, and they offered a discount to Kaiser patients. The care was okay overall (I won't address the issues we had with care in this review), but I was not at all happy with their transparency about billing rates. Not only did they overcharge my mom the entire first month by not invoking the Kaiser discount, but they also did not inform her she would be paying time-and-a-half for all hours beyond an 8-hour shift. That amounted to 6 hours of overtime each day. The sales rep quoted us an hourly rate for 12 hours shifts, and even wrote down the hourly rate on the paperwork he left with us, with no mention of time-and-a-half. When he sat down to have my mother sign the contract he did not mention the OT she would be charged on a daily basis. I will point out he did tell her she would be charged time-and-a-half for holidays. So I'm not sure why he felt it was not important to tell her she'd be paying time-and-a-half EVERY SINGLE SHIFT. Inexcusable in my opinion. Lastly, when I discovered this a few months later, after I had returned home (out of state), I emailed the sales rep and received no response. My father had round the clock care for several months which was very expensive. We should have been told exactly what the billing rates would be.Debbie LaChusa

Life would have been a lot harder without Always Best Care in my life, I have COPD and I am on oxygen full time at level 4 so doing daily chores are out question without my caregiver Ricci Anthony who has been taking tremendous care of me for 3 years this August 2022 and I thank God everyday for him. Every time he arrives he immediately says Hi checks in with me to see how I am doing. As well as, every time he departs I thank him for all that he does for me and I tell him I love him Ricci replies in same likeness. Ricci and I are incredible friends, it’s closer to a dad and son relationship. We’re both strong Christian me. Visiting Angels of Lemon Grove has been a lifesaver for my mother with dementia. With their help she has been able to remain healthy and in her home with family during the COVID pandemic which has been so devastating to so many people in senior living facilities. Mom looks forward to her daily visits from her excellent helpers. They are patient, kind, and knowledgable about her condition. They are willing to do most things — taking her to doctor's appointments or outings in the park, and also cooking her special meals and doing her laundry. The office staff at Visiting Angels are very responsive and will get back to you immediately. They help us with Mom's insurance — filing the bills and providing the insurance company with needed reports. They have done a wonderful job of matching the caregivers to Mom — I requested Spanish speaking helpers for her, and that was no problem.Catherine Day

The Visiting Angles Team truly ARE Angels,. They are so incredibly kind, patient and gracious with my 92 year old Mother in Law – Mama. Mama lives with us and we have Visiting Angels come and visit and make sure she has everything she needs when we go on vacation or need to make a trip. For the first time in 5 years we went on a 10 day vacation and we didn't worry once. Miss Vanna, her consistent care taker treats Mama with such kindness and respect, and even listens to her stories when she is on repeat. A number of years ago both my parents needed caregivers. We were are stressed to the max. A friend recommended Southern Caregiver and frankly my first reaction was, "I don't need one more thing to do." I was thinking it might be some sort of support group. She assured me it was an information resource, and she had been extremely pleased with the service. We were too. My husband, brother, and I made an appointment. Facts were gathered and we were provided information to help with the decisions we were making. We were especially appreciative of the recommendation of an elder attorney who helped us with legal matters. We were able to take it from there and only visited once, but we did receive follow-up to see how things were going. I take care of my husband 86 yrs old with severe dementia. He was sick and I took care of him with a respiratory infection and caught it myself. I was so weak, trying to take care of him, not being able to sleep, I got so tired I felt like I could die. They said as the organization to pay my regular caregiver and they would pay for 5 days, so I hired her and went and stayed in a hotel for 2 days to rest. The center then told me they could not pay a regular private caregiver. So I am stuck with the bill for the caregiver 24 hours for 2 days and and the hotel. Guess there is no help for caregivers in this world. You just have to take care of your loved ones till you drop over dead.Connie Moore

This is our third caregiver company for our 86 year old mom and is by far the best we’ve had. We’ve been with them for a little over 2 yrs. They work very hard to provide caregivers that are good matches for mom’s needs and personality, and the few times it hasn’t worked out, they quickly find someone who’s a better fit. They proactively communicate, have an organized business model, and work hard to find good caregivers despite the challenges of COVID and a shortage of caregivers. They had strict COVID protocols in place during the height of the pandemic and are still following COVID-safe practices. When COVID vaccines were first approved, their office proactively hosted two on-site vaccination clinics in collaboration with CalFire to provide the first and second shots for their staff as well as clients to make it easier for their clients to be protected. All the office staff as well as caregivers are very nice, and the care and well-being of their clients is of the utmost importancePenny Wilkins

The San Diego Jackson Office of Home Instead has been a dream to work with, compared to a different experience with another agency. My aunt in Oklahoma is also thrilled with her Home Instead cargivers. We have been very happy with the Caregiver teams that have been helping us for 4 years, 5-7 days a week. The Office staff and caregivers are all caring, efficient, and on time, with a rare exception, usually due to traffic. Anyone using long-term care insurance ,would be glad to know that Home Instead is well versed in working with long-term care insurance…and does so with efficiency. We've been using their services for many years, first for my father, now for my mother, and I have been grateful for every minute. When you are hired they promise you the world. They tell others that you will change the culture which makes the seasoned employees feel they are not worthy. They throw you out in the field without telling you that the star rating for this particular portion of the company is not the best. You not only have the stress of trying to get business for a low star rating agency but you are also dealing with a lot of backbiting that goes on between the CEO and the Administrator. It seems they enjoy talking about everyone behind their backs and poke fun of people when they are not producing like they feel they should. In fact even if you are producing you will get talked about. It’s like nothing I had ever seen. What I also find interesting is how a person’s rate of pay gets around to everyone from the higher-ups discussing it with the staff. In return it makes a person feel unworthy while they are trying to get business for this low-star rating agency. Here’s a good one. Many of the marketers get pulled from marketing to not only do walk-ins but to be caregivers on their weekend On-Call shift when caregivers call out. At some point agencies should re-evaluate how they do business instead of having marketers jumping in to do homecare. I haven’t figured out if it’s because they were too busy to restructure or if using salaried employees were less expensive. My advice is to look elsewhere for a marketing job. This agency has a revolving door and they like to poke fun of firing people. Instead of learning digital marketing or hiring a good IT person to advertise on the Internet, they throw people out with popcorn to market and expect them to succeed. This isn’t 1995. Get with the program. A good marketer will see this immediately. I do not need a response from the CEO. I saw enough while I was there. Perhaps start looking from within instead of pointing the finger at others –Daniell Bradley

The management here is not on the same page. One manager says one thing, another says something else. No one is treated with any dignity or respect and there is gossip about employees to other employees from managers. There is no training and management is demanding, berating and demeaning. Employee favoritism is present. For example one person will get paid to be on call, another person won't be and a third person will never even have to take after hours on call at all The senior people in this unorganized organization can be passive aggressive.Carol Lees

This is the best place to work, period. I've been working at ComForCare (North San Diego) for a few months now and I haven't had anything but great experiences.
