20 Best G.E.D Programs In Knoxville, TN (2022 Updated)

This is my second year at Chattanooga State and I love it. The professors absolutely care about your success and offer plenty of office hours to come by. The staff is always very friendly and helpful, especially when it comes to complicated topics like financial aid. Other students seem just as committed to the work as everyone else. The campus is clean and very pleasant to be in. The only downside is the parking. It is worth removing a star. It is a nightmare at the beginning of the semester. Unless you wake up early and arrive around eight or nine in the morning, you will struggle to find a parking spot, which is kind of awful when you don't have class for three more hours. Otherwise, I cannot imagine a better community college here. There are lots of events every month that students can participate in. The cafeteria food is pretty decent and offers a large selection. The library allows food and drink so that you can ear while you work or study. Little things like this make Chatt State super nice. Also, since someone mentioned the online classes, they will keep you very busy. The instructors expect more work than an actual lecture class, but it is manageable as long as you keep track of your time and when certain things are due.Onyx R

I was a student here and I recently transferred to a school closer to my home. My experience at this school horrible(thank to Ms. D. Jackson). I had a issue with another student and I brought it to her attention in hopes she would help solve the issue, but she did the complete opposite. Since she knew the girl's mom, Ms. Jackson decided to team up with her and "TRY" to get me kicked out of the school. I am just glad that the higher ups seen through it all and nothing came of their wrong doings. I had to hire a attorney, just in case things got worse since Ms. Jackson didn't wont to see the proof I had regarding the other girl.Kierra Mangham

Just spent a fun couple weeks jumping through admission hoops here. Beginning to end the process was a pain, with uninformed staff, unnecessary phone tag, and an online portal that couldn't be more labyrinthine if it were coded by Daedalus… The kicker? The class I jumped all those hoops for was not even on offer. Now, call me old fashioned, but when someone asks me for a thing I don't have, I tend to lead with the fact that I don't have it. Why the good folks of Chatt. State felt it necessary for me to complete admissions before telling me it's all for nothing is beyond me.M C

Today was my first time going to TN School of Beauty. I was super impressed,! From my first experience scheduling my appointment this past Tuesday, to the end of my appointment today, I could not be more pleased! My stylist was Cheyenne and the sweetest, most well mannered and professional young lady. She did a partial highlight and haircut for me and it turned out perfect! The instructor, Michelle was very nice and helpful and Cheyenne was so poised and confident and made me feel at ease. I was certain she was doing a great job and Michelle reinforced with her positive rapport with Cheyenne. Everyone at the school was so nice and friendly. My hair looks great! I left the school and went to my daughter’s house and she said my hair looked great and even better than the picture I sent her of it. My service by my friend Carly Lee was exceptional she took the time to understand what I was wanting and it came out with some thing even better than I expected. but One of the instructors on the floor had the most disgusting attitude towards the students there and was making the students stressed out and feel like they’re not doing good enough and for me that I should be a absolute red flag of them not being a instructor they’re just because you’re old and an instructor at a school does it give you permission to act like that towards other people that are trying to learn I understand their situation‘s were you get irritated. But just because a student was behind by 20 minutes on appointments you don’t need to have an attitude. and quite honestly I don’t even want to come back to TSB because of her.Brittany M

I've been getting my hair done by the same student and he did a great job at getting my hair to the color I wanted. I went to get a root touch up, however, and the instructor told my senior student stylist to use a totally incorrect formula. He was able to fix it in a subsequent appointment, but the damage to my hair is awful. I'm still shedding hair, and have lost so much volume due to the damage. I don't blame the student at all, but the instructor should have known better. I will not be returning, nor would I recommend my friends go here for hair service. I am in the Pharmacy Tech program and I am totally LOVING it! I have never been so happy to be doing my school work. Even though we are currently doing things online, due to COVID-19, Mrs. Hope is doing everything she can to help us understand the material we are learning! I've never had a more interactive teacher! 10/10 recommend this school! The staff is great. From the time I asked for more information on the school till my first day I had weekly check-ins with people from the campus! I am graduating shortly from the HVAC program and I have enjoyed every night of it. The course is set up to help you succeed and the instructors make sure that you have the information needed and understand it well. Unlike some programs Fortis has a lab with 7 fully functional heating and cooling units. During the course of the program you get the opportunity to see first hand how they should work and also what happens when they don't work. I graduate in roughly a month and I can honestly say that this program has more than prepared me for a long successful career in this field.Logan Selby

Just weeks from graduating from HVAC program and must say it has been not only a magnificent educational program with the greatest instructors possible for the program but a phenomenal amount of knowledge gained for a wonderful career path. Instructors are above and beyond with their background in the field, their knowledge of both theory and hands on demonstrations as an excellent form of instruction, and their full dedication and passion for teaching proper skills and ethics of the trade. I am shocked how terribly I was treated by Lauren who is TNVAs office administrator. Long story short I transferred my daughter to their school this past summer. I was alarmed when her old school contacted me saying she had 6 days of unexcused absences, and after 12 we could be up for truancy court. So we are taking about a potential legal issue. Lauren was very cold, unkind, and treated me like it was MY fault they hadn't processed the transfer yet! I explained to Lauren how I had been trying to reach TNVA for days and every time I got a busy signal. She asked the number and told me that I called another one of their phone lines, but apparently it was not THE ONE I should have. So she completely blew off my following explanation, which I was hoping she would listen to so this could prevent other parents from having the same issue in the future. TNVA did not tell us what number was the “proper one” for such an issue upon enrollment. So I just called their general number as was provided to me, which most people would naturally do. As mentioned she did not want to hear that and continued to interrupt me asking (referring to the attendance/transfer) “well do you want to know the issue?!” very rudely. I actually only got ahold of Lauren/TNVA today after waiting for 1 hour and 40 minutes on one phone, and over 1 hour on a second phone with their parent company K12 and being transferred from there. She explained how it works on their side from the enrollment/attendance standpoint, which FYI they do not process your child's transfer for days after the school year starts. Given that and given the gravity of truancy from school becoming a legal issue after 12 days, I do not see why this was not disclosed upon enrollment. As opposed to having parents chase TNVA administration down only to get treated terribly for what is a very serious concern in order to get the answer. It would have been even better if they would have had a pending transfer from my child's prior school until they send out the notifications multiple days after school starts, so we were all informed. Following her explanation regarding the enrollment/attendance issue she very quickly proceeded to ask me, multiple times over and over, if I needed anything else within the span of a few seconds. I said yes and asked her name and position. While clearly she did tell me, she hesitated and actually paused on that one. That tells me she knew full well she was completely in the wrong with how she treated me as a concerned parent with what was a serious issue.Aubrey

Let's start out by saying this is the worst school ever!!! I enrolled my son in 2019 for Kindergarten and when they did mandatory testing the first month it did not affect their school year. My issue with K12 is that they over work the children. I tried to give them another chance for my son during 1st grade. They put him in RTI and I was okay with it because I know my son needed the extra help but they also had 4-5 hours of live classes, 3-4 hours OLS standard curriculum and 2 hours of seesaw homework. Because he was in RTI he had more work. I never returned my son too this school again. 2 years later my daughter is attending school for the first time in kindergarten. We fell in love with her witty sweet teacher. Then the second week in school they tested the children and said don't worry this is to see where your at just do your best. Well, they did not mean what they said…. by the beginning of the third week her teacher emailed me saying they want to move my daughter to a new classroom with only 6 kids to get one on one help which is RTI. This school sickens me because they never even gave my child a chance to advance.. It only took 2 weeks for them to put her in a category instead of teaching her. My child was nervous during her test and is smart she can say words that I can't say. PLEASE I BEG YOU DO NOT BRING YOUR CHILD TO THIS SCHOOL. I'm sure they have more black kids in RTI then any other race. This is sick!!!CHRISTINE'S WORLD

This was my twins' 3rd year with TNVA and they absolutely do not want to ever go to a brick and mortar school. They love schooling here so much that they are disappointed when weekends and holidays come around. I have been very happy with the positive changes that have occurred this school year and look forward to many more awesome years ahead. It really comes down to what you are willing to put into it. Do what you know needs to be done and it's an amazing place to experience your child(ren)'s learning growth. Expect it will all be done for you and refuse all the assistance, and of course it won't be what you hoped for. This place really cares for their students. They bend over backwards to accommodate for any schedule. The staff is very friendly. My daughter has gotten close to a few of the staff and it makes it feel like family. This was my first time attending an On-Line Live class at New Horizons. I attended the Visio Level 1 class. Some participates were having issues viewing the instructors screen during the class, which held up the entire class until the instructor worked it out. The instructor was very knowledgeable & very patient trying to work out all of the problems. In this type of "classroom", there are people with different skill levels. The first two hours of the class seemed to be more of an introduction to Microsoft Office instead of Visio. It was slow to start. There were also two other students in the same room, taking a different class who talked very loudly the entire day. It was very disruptive & made it hard to concentrate on the class I was taking.Ashley Robinson

My first experience with new horizons was great but this was one was not good at all. The instructor rushed through the material and skipped things. She didn't seem to know how to do everything and this was confusing to someone like me who was a beginner. I am giving them three stars because I am retaking the class at no charge and they are giving me another class at no charge. If they had asked me to review my first class I would have given them 5 stars it was so great. So I guess it depends on the instructor you get. In the end I would recommend New Horizons because they do fix things if you are dissatisfied.Sm Tennessee

The staff at New Horizons is the most courteous and helpful I have ever met in a learning institution. The coursework is well-organized and the classes are dynamic, to the point and accessible. There are plenty of opportunities to practice the exercises and the ancillary materials are well-written and provide adequate instruction. New Horizons also provides a variety of online resources which enhance the learning experience and allow the student to work at his/her own pace. Update: my younger son completed the same SAT prep course and increased his score by 180 points! It really is a game changer and is well worth the investment. We are very pleased and would highly recommend. We were very pleased and impressed with the level of personalized instruction provided by everyone at the center. My son completed the SAT prep course and increased his score by 120 points! I highly recommend their services and taking advantage of the practice tests. Through the epidemic my 2nd grader got behind on basic learning blocks. She was reading at a Kindergartner level. We would both be in tears watching her struggle to read a sentence. Less than a year at Sylvan and she is reading me whole books now. And her state tests have jumped up 50%. I couldn’t be more proud of her and give all the credit to sylvan learning center. Sylvan has really helped my son in the last month in more ways than academically. I have seen more school related responsibilty than ever before. He hated school before but he never complains about going to Sylvan. He reports that he really enjoys it actually and it has really helped him all around. I mainly engaged them for employment services. Depending on who you talk with, it may feel blunt at times but overly realistic. I have attended this school and I can tell you from experience that it's a great school. I had a bad experience with even getting started at another school. The process is very simple at TCAT. The school is so popular that they many times have a waiting list to get in. But quality is worth waiting for. My experience with enrollment and financial aid has been great. They guide you through every step and will help you fill out whatever is needed for financial assistance. I even took off when I had some medical issues and was able to get back in. The instructor I had was very helpful and provided high quality hands-on instruction. It's a great school for people who learn better by hands-on. The book work can be challenging, but the instructor will do everything you need to help prepare you. Basically if you want a school where you can learn a good hands-on trade and after learning it make a great wage like $20 an hour or more then this is for you. Many of the trades students graduate with companies waiting to hire them making at least $20 an hour. Some jobs you must be willing to travel to make more money. Millwrights, welders and pipefitters from TCAT can easily make $30 an hr doing travel jobs. I speak from experience. I hope this helps someone who might be considering what school to attend.Matt Cox

If you want to relive high school, this is the place for you. It seems stupid and childish to complaint about, but this place is worse than high school. Be prepared to be laughed at and made fun of if you have any physical defects or if you need help with something. I was literally laughed out of class. The teachers are snotty and only interact with favorite students. There are no lectures. You basically spend six hours working through the course material with no teacher guidance. Horrible experience. The students are mostly comprised of toothless Carter County rednecks. If you're not from Carter County, you're not anything. The only positive experience I had was with Student Services. I feel as though that was just to get me in school so they could get grant money. Financial aid is moody. The guy there only responds in grunts. Horrible experience. Don't waste your time.so hidaisy

I would NEVER recommend this school to anyone, especially with regards to the Practical Nursing Program. They need to fire and rehire in several departments, as someone else on here also stated. The Nursing Program faculty are corrupt and are only in it for themselves. It is all just a big game to them. This is coming from someone who made excellent grades in both the 1st and 2nd trimesters and missed Med Surg by 2 points. Earlier this year, they told me I could retake Med Surg this May then after successful completion, I could move on to 3rd trimester. Then I received a call this morning saying that the Director of Nursing is putting a stop to the discussed plan and would make me redo the entire Program over again from the beginning. I am tired of their games and will be attending Nursing school somewhere else. They are not getting any more of my time or money!Jess 5708

We signed our son up for Emerald Academy when he was 4 years old because we heard such great things about the school and wanted him to be able to start Kindergarten there. Our son is biracial and it's very important to us for him to go to a school that not only recognizes but celebrates diversity. The uniforms were attractive to us because it takes away from all of the competition of wearing the latest brands. Our son has a lot of trouble focusing and having two teachers in each classroom has really been an asset. They are able to work with each student individually. The curriculum is tough and the expectations are high. I feel like it really does prepare them for high school and college. Our son had to be held back in 1st grade this year but the amazing staff have been incredibly supportive which made all the difference for him. I transferred my child into EA in January. I should have known something was wrong when my child's teacher left after returning back from winter break. My child endured being bullied and ganged up on. A staff member saw a boy push her out of a chair, this same student kicked her for no reason and every time something happened nothing was done and my child has told admin staff that she fears for her safety. this school has been a down hill of disappointment with late reporting and lack of supervision. My child has never hit a student or had an anger of outburst, yet other students have thrown chairs across the room and returned to the classroom like nothing happened. I am sick of being worried about my child at this school. They've went out of their way on every issue to tell me my none violent child doesn't deserve to be protected because other children can't control their impulse to not hit her.jada walls

We have been a part of the emerald family since the beginning. We have seen so much progress and growth from not only the children,but also the school. I see them ever changing and adapting to better serve our scholars and parents. We have had issues like with most schools. I am pleased at the effort that goes into to fixing the situations and problems that inevitably arise. As a grizzly bear Mama, I've DEFINITELY gone overboard when defending the cubs. The staff is quite understanding. We are all humans and make mistakes. By no means is emerald perfect. This review is ONLY about the school of the Red Cross at Knoxville, TN and is not intended to reflect the Red Cross as a whole. I took classes here to further education. It was over priced. I could have got the same education and clinical experience at a school down the road at 1/3 of the price. They are ridiculously strict about uniforms and cell phone use. Militant would be a better word. It reminded me of Catholic school. The rule was that if you were caught using you cell phone AT ALL, you would be expelled. Yet, one of my classmates continuously disturbed the class and made learning very difficult. The entire class suffered and the school did nothing. He was not even verbally reprimanded. The director of the school is disorganized, makes lame excuses, and has NO BACKBONE. My class room instructor was a very knowledgeable nurse and an excellent instructor, yet she was harassed, for weak if no reason, by the the director to the point that she quit. The director of this school is ruining the reputation of the Red Cross and should be fired. If you are thinking of taking CNA or EKG classes here, I would recommend you go somewhere else.Jake Anderson

Every time I see a Red Cross commercial it makes me sick… This organization will ask for donations in times of disaster, they say it's to help the victims.. But that is a big lie.. My family, & I lost EVERYTHING during hurricane Irma in September 2017, we evacuated from the FL Keys, headed north ended up in Tennessee. After 2 Weeks we found out we lost it all. Decided to stay in Tennessee.. We called the Red Cross for help numerous times .. From Sept to just the other day December, we sent emails asking for help.. Do u know what they gave us? 2 referrals "to places that don't require referrals" & advice to call the Gas company so they could take the $300 deposit that we had to pay & split it in 3 payments. Meanwhile, people all over donated money to help families like ours. My family is still in need, it is not easy to start over. Thank God my husband found a great job, but with all the money we owe now, we are having a hard time even buying groceries, not to mention getting furniture "used" not new, & even buying winter clothing. House burned down. Red Cross was super nice and gave us 824$ to help because we lost everything. Top center of paperwork for the debit card says expiration: 04/26, card active ready to use, 824$. So my wife and I put the card up for replacing the kids bedroom sets/school supplies/food after we found a new home. When the time came, the card did not work. It was not a large transaction nor an unapproved purchase/merchant nor a purchase involving a hold. Made an account to check balance, US bank website said card was active and the balance was 824$. Called US bank and they said that although their own website said the card was active and funds were available, the funds were returned to the red Cross and the card will no longer work because there is fine print that says the funds will only be on the card for 60 days. Multiple incidents of contradictory information, my experience was a twilight zone situation and a waste of time and a huge pain in the rear, all for nothing. I have made lifelong family and friends thanks to this amazing college. I also graduated in the top 10 of my graduating class with so many honors, achievements, and an associates of science degree. Definitely a milestone and achievement in my life that I will always be so super proud of for doing myself with the help of those compassionate and intelligent professors to help me along the way Now my middle daughter has started her first semester there and she is so super stoked and excited, and absolutely loves it so far. It doesn’t matter how nice you are the front staff is always rude. I understand that they talk to 1000 people a day but there is no reason for it. There is always somebody who will help you out and is nice but most of the time you have to rummage through the rude staff. The teachers are usually great I haven’t had a really bad experience with the teachers. Otherwise good school to go to to get that first 2 years out of the way. They will not prepare you for the big boy colleges tho, the teachers at northeast are way more lenient and the work is a lot easierJessica Miller

While I was on Halo, I spent three years studying at Walters State. It was a great educational experience. The instructors were invested in each individual student and extremely personable. The library is where this campus really shines, even though I am finishing up at a four year school, I still come here to study from time to time. That just tells you how great the library is, some of the best staff you will ever meet too. I studied at two wscc campuses and had a great experience at both. I would highly recommend. And to the students there, finish the fight and get that degree!Master Chief

I took the Basic Motorcycle Rider course with hubby. We learned a TON and the instructors (Lane and Jordan) were awesome! They kept us moving forward with enough time on each exercise for us to become comfortable. Would highly recommend the course to anyone wanting to get licensed or refresh skills! I had zero experience except for riding on the back of a motorcycle with an experienced rider and the instructors got me to the point of being comfortable enough to know that I CAN operate one on my own! Everything has roadblocks the require hoop after hoop to be jumped through in order to be fixed. No communication either, randomly drop classes for a problem on their end and can’t put me back in them. Always ALWAYS financial aid problems and when I drop class during 75% refund I get $35 back they explain it away and suddenly I’m $500 short when I’m already struggling with money. I’m surprised I didn’t drop out this place has countless times made me cry and horribly frustrated. The teachers are usually great but the administration is awful.catherine sams

Pellisippi is a terrible choice when looking for post secondary education. The teachers could careless about the students. Don’t try to speak to speak up because the deans don’t care either. Here’s the kicker Pellisippi is so scared about students dropping out and wonder why no one attends classes but then has teachers that let all of their power go to their heads. When you try to go seek help from anyone at Pellisippi they either don’t know who to contact or push your concerns under the table and forget about you. Students who have concerns will never be heard nor have any of the issues fixed. All Pellisippi cares about is the government funding they get from students who attend there. I would love for someone to direct me to someone who genuinely cares about the students and will make sure their voice is heard.Dylan Rector

I received my Associates Degree from Pellissippi in 2007. I came back last year to take a few online courses b/c I am pursuing my Bachelors at another college. The courses are much less expensive and the instructors are great. However, the staff is very abrupt and rude. It doesn't matter if I am talking to a receptionist, advisor, business associate — even the online Help Desk. I am not sure what the issue is, but I have yet to encounter a friendly staff member. I would recommend this school b/c of the price and knowledgeable instructors. The school staff though, needs an attitude adjustment. They need to remember that we are the students and without us they don't have a job.Amy

I have had a great experience here so far. I am currently in my second semester. My professors have all been very knowledgable, friendly, and I commend those who are able to make a three hour long lecture stay interesting. Looking forward to completing my degree here. The admissions and financial aid staff are wonderful and very helpful in walking you through the process of registration and setting up payments. Bookstore staff are always helpful and nice. Library is great and (usually) a nice/quiet place to study.Noah Newport
