20 Best Acting Programs In Milwaukee, WI (2022 Updated)

My wife WAS TRULY UNSATISFIED HERE!! Listen, if you have a family to support, this is NOT the college for you. They changed things so many times DURING the program that added fees to your bill without you knowing until you got ready to register. POORLY UNORGANIZED!! The only great thing my wife talked about was her Pathophysiology teacher Julie L. She actually wanted students to pass and made every effort to help them!! My wife TAUGHT HERSELF IN HEALTH ASSESSMENT!! This is crazy!! The teacher acted like she didn’t know how to teach the class or the lab! They had to eventually adjust grades because students started dropping like flies! If you decide to go here ask about the hidden fees which they don’t tell you about until the first week of classes! Stay way, trust me, I watched my wife fall asleep trying to study off a study guide for health assessment which DID NOT HELP HER!! The study guide should have said just study everything! For those who are reading this and thinking she had a rough start, my wife is certified as a phlebotomist, and medical assistant, works in a hospital, and has been in healthcare for 18 years! Good luck if you choose here! Just fair warning! By way you have to pass here with 83%, everywhere else is 80%.James McAllister

This is honestly the worst run institution I have ever attended. Classes are a joke lacking rigor or even consistency. Financial aid just randomly accepted loans on my behalf without me knowing. I am in my sixth week taking online courses at MATC. I have chosen the IT Support Associate Degree program, for two reasons: One the program is only two years, I’ll be able to launch into the job market faster, and because IT is such a diverse, and fast growing career path, I know I will find a fit into the IT world upon graduation. I chose MATC because MATC is convenient and conventional. I can take classes online, at my own pace, and be on campus for the classes I need more focus and dedication to. This IT program combined with my 10 plus years customer service experience, I know I will be able to reach any career goal I set. Now, while my interest in computers and knack for problem solving I know this career path will be suitable for me, however, to any prospective student looking for a quick money type of career, this program is not for you. This program consists of lots of physical and mental work, also taking consideration of the customers you are serving. If a prospective student welcomes challenges and is comfortable with asking questions and not feeling intimidated by the mass amount of information you will retain then this is a program for you. Prospective students should also be aware that they don’t have to work or figure stuff out alone, one of my favorite accommodations is having access to tutoring, whether online or in person- at all campuses. Fellow future students should also know that acquiring their degree at MATC is a smart money move, students can save thousands of dollars getting their education here, as opposed to a four year college/university. Information Technology is very informative program. This program breaks down a lot of things that can happen with computer systems. It is a to-date program. I choose this program because I want to go more in depth with technology. Everyone uses technology every day. I would like to be able to assist those who are not tech savvy. MATC I.T support program has a great path program. Pathway allows you get a few certificates take a break and come back for your diploma. Completing this program will give the knowledge and skill I need to become an I.T professional. Instructors are very helpful. Staff is friendly. My experience in MATC IT Computer Support Specialist program is limited but good so far. I chose to pursue this degree because it lines up well with my current work experience and career goals. So far, I have been able to take all my classes online with no scheduled class times, so I can complete assignments at my own pace without interfering with my work schedule. Another thing this program does well, is that it offers options to achieve many different certifications on your way to a degree. They also work with businesses to help their student get jobs after graduating. I would recommend this program to someone looking to get into IT Support as a career.Alexander Salas

To all the high school freshman posting reviews and rating AMDA 5 stars stop. You do not go there. Do not give it a bigger head than it already has. Attended in 2013-2014 would have been one star if it weren't for some (a few) wonderful teachers. (Stacy Lee, Kathy, Jeff, Tim,and Ray thank you) I am posting this review because they just posted an instagram post about 13 reasons why. They said check this out help is available. Would have been nice if that was ACTUALLY TRUE. However, if you have any sort of mental health problems you are told to grow up! (By teachers AND THE DAMN COUNSELOR) you are told stories of how the show must go on fake it til you make it. If you cannot stop crying you are weak, and theater is just a hobby for you. The teachers name drop and make you feel bad about yourself for not being Jason Derulo.The only person who helped me get help was my acting teacher (god bless him), who sent me to the counselor who told me I was acting like a child and that I need to prioritize. "If this isn't for you you don't have to be here" I told him this is the most depressed I've ever been. No offer to find therapy near me. No weekly meetings. No follow up visit. He suggested I find a new dream. So I did but now I'm 25,000 dollars in debt after 9 of the worst months of my life. Like others have said AMDA is what you make it but if you have any sort of mental health issues don't count on getting any help. PS. The dorms have a large scary roach problem, pretty sure it used to be a mental hospital (how fitting) PPS. I can acknowledge that I learned a good deal in my acting and VPS classes. I joined AMDA NYC back in 2021 Fall. This school has changed my life. Incredible staffing who are all working professionals within the acting world and all are incredibly motivated, fun and inspiring. My time at this school has been nothing but positive thus far and, the school continues to get better and better. I have done my own reading into reviews and the bad reviews have definitely changed. I have seen things change here, I have seen things become progressively better for the students here at AMDA. AMDA has become much more of a supporting and safe environment for not just me but for everybody who needs it. You certainly learn a lot here, develop great connections with your teachers and get plenty of opportunities out here. I myself, am certainly glad that I chose this school. My daughter just graduated in Sept 2017 from NYC in dance. She had a very positive experience from start to finish! Starting with Elliott Kerr, Assistant Director of Admissions. Elliott did a nice job of answering all our questions and helping get all our paperwork completed. Our daughter loved all her teachers and has said through out her program, "this is the right school for me." I decided to transfer. Minimal funding for the humanities, so if your want to major in English, philosophy, history, etc maybe consider transferring for the sake of your education. I'm not exaggerating either- some of the adjuncts who work here have even told me to do this. The student body and some of the staff are incredibly arrogant, rude, and competitive. You will be stereotyped based off of where you come from- especially if you are from Illinois. I found that the people here don't try and get to know you for who you really are, even considering the fact that both you and them ended up at the same university. When I told my advisor I was planning on transferring, he scoffed and told me "Transfer wherever the h*** you want, my commission won't be affected" and then proceeded to tell me he had no clue how the transfer process worked, scoffed at me again, and told me "good luck". The dorm food is low quality, and to eat healthy you basically have to risk your life by crossing an on-ramp to the highway to get to Straz aka the dorm with the healthy food. There isn't much to do in the college town, and Milwaukee is a lot further away and more unsafe to get to than how the brochures portray it.Audrey Gordon

Marquette offers a great college experience and a fantastic education for well rounded young adults. Marquette is located in a fun city that is going through a healthy revival with a large community of people under 40 deciding to live in the city instead the the burbs. It's a Jesuit school, so the school and students are more conservative than public land-grant universities. We were impressed with the indications of community service, tolerance, and good works that we observed practically everywhere we looked. It was the only school we saw that had postings on their student boards for volunteer work and community service. Marquette also offers deep academic resources. I just graduated in May 2014, I could not be more grateful for the experience Marquette provided me over the last 4 years. It contains the great campus community of a large school while having the city of Milwaukee in walking distance for an endless amount of activities for weekends. The graduation and job rates are over 50% greater for MU grads compared to many of the local in-state schools, it's well worth the money. Do not let the high price tag published online scare you away, over 90% of students receive a scholarship starting freshman year.Brian Sobon

Every time I come for a show, I fall in love with the unimaginable talent that we have found in Milwaukee more and more! I won tickets to a show from 88.9 Radio Milwaukee and loved it. One day I got a call about support the Rep with a donation or a subscription to help during Covid and I have yet to have a bad experience! My Way was so mind-blowing that I had to come back and see it again! (2nd was even better because the audience was more interactive and had the crew cracking up too!) Dad's Season Tickets, As You Like It, My Way, and most recently Titanic by themselves are enough of a reason to become a patron… Can't wait for Murder On The Orient Express! The Rep is a world-class performance arts theater group in the heart of Milwaukee. Comprised of 3 venues you can find various types of performances throughout the arts season. It's not uncommon to be able to see Pulitzer Prize or Tony-award winning/nominated productions or even world premiers every year. The creative director, Mark Clements, consistently presents thought-provoking, timely and important works that touch your soul. The Stackner Cabaret offers a full service bar a menu before all shows, with a show later–it's not a dinner theater. This could be the best kept secret in Milwaukee. My daughter and I appreciated the character of the ghost of Christmas past the most. We could not take our eyes away from him! INCREDIBLE! Learn from the best. When I was 19 years old, I was accepted to the Lee Strasberg Theater Institute. It was the highlight of my life at the time. The great teachers back then were Harv Dean and David Gideon. I went to school here part time for 9 months to learn acting at its very basic. If you can afford going to the school and want to learn acting from the aspect of the instrument, then I highly recommend going here. The most important thing I learned from this school, is that even if you attend the classes and do your scene work, you need to be out pounding the pavement and looking for work in the industry, an agent and possibly a manager. I would not call the school glamorous but it does show great pride and respect for people who walks through their doors. If you are serious about acting and show business, this is the place to be. Although I am old enough to be the GRANDmother of most of the students, I had the honor to chat with Lee Strasberg himself, one morning, years ago. He spent nearly a half hour on the phone with me – a total stranger. I had acting aspirations back then (I am a freelance writer today). And I have never forgotten his generosity, wisdom, and graciousness to me – someone he would never meet in person. I love stopping by whenever I can, to donate theatre books, costume pieces, and just sniff around who's doing what. We got married at the The Marcus Center on 10/2/21 and it exceeded our expectations, it was a gorgeous venue! Everything was perfect, ladies were able to get ready on site in a spacious area, ceremony in the atrium, cocktail hour in the promenade, and reception in the bradley pavilion. This was a huge selling point for us. The catering was also phenomenal. Their food selection was amazing, as was the actual food. Lastly, our wonderful coordinator Karin! She was absolutely amazing and incredible to work with. She was quick to respond and answer any questions. She was incredibly accommodating and made sure we had everything we needed. Karin put us at ease for our wedding, and made it as easy and stress free as possible. She was there from the beginning planning stages to fluffing my train as I walked down the aisle. We highly recommend the venue and more importantly Karin and Sazama's catering!Stephanie Prokopec

Very nice to have a little bar upstairs and room to spread out before the show. Rows of bench seating could help in open area. Beautifully decorated for the holidays. Staff was very helpful. Found the covid card check to be simple, have your card and ID READY before walking to entrance. Drop them on table for a sec and walk in to ticket checkers. First Stage is Milwaukee's premier children's theater for learning and performing. I attended a high school age performance of Shakespeare's "Winter's Tale". There were some difficulties. The echoing in the small box theater in the complex. With minimal set and not a lot of fabric or carpet to absorb sound, my husband couldn't understand the dialogue. Frustrated, he left That's never happened before. The print on the brochure was very small and there was no brief synopsis of the play. So it was hard to know who the characters were, and their relationship to each other, and what the main arc of the story was. Also I didn't think of it, but the entire cast was clothed in white. Several royalty wore gold headbands. and a few other bits of costume helped somewhat. We've been to other plays with First Stage, including at least 3 holiday shows, and they've all been excellent. Elf is a knockout this season. Don't judge the entity by 1 playJanet F

First stage children's theater is truly a pillar of the Milwaukee community they have been a wonderful influence on the lives of children all the way up through teens with their philosophy of life skills through stage skills. They also have a wonderful program I believe it's called next steps which helps kids with autism learn skills for navigating what can often be the complicated social and emotional interactions leading to adulthood. I will say that I am absolutely proud to be married to Erin Whitehead who has been the Director of Organizational Support for a while now and has been with first stage for almost 17 years now. Everyone in this community would do well to take advantage of what they offer or to visit one of their many wonderful plays that they've put on. It's important for us as a community to support the arts and first stage is truly a pillar of the arts community that deserves our support.Nicholas Whitehead

I did a summer camp and a musical theatre class here. The students are amazing and honestly even though it was only a few weeks, it’s made a difference in my life two-ish years later. It was the first time I saw the weird kids, the struggling kids in an environment where they thrived and that made a giant difference in my life and confidence. Please, if your kid is thinking about doing a class here, DO IT! Obviously, not everyone has my experience but it can do so much for kids. Our first time at the Overture center was to see Pretty Woman. I went online to check out the setup and from other people's experiences it looked like a top notch facility. It was very well organized and the staff were extremely friendly. I appreciated the Overture Center not requiring masks or vax status paperwork. The Plandemic is long over and it's refreshing to see a Dane County business not get sucked into the joke of a CDC recommendation. The performance itself was top notch. We'd definitely attend again and are already looking for the next show.Court Hutsen

The venue is beautiful to look at. There's a round dome you can look up and see the sky. Once you've found your seat, things get a little tight. It's packed tighter than an airplane. Your shins are almost guaranteed to touch the seat in front of you. I wish they would have added another 3 inches of space. Otherwise, the sound was clear from every angle which is difficult to achieve. The bathrooms were clean and the staff were all friendly. I'd go back again.Eric Stephenson

It's been a great experience at Empire. Cosmetology is hard and without all the support I would not have come this far. Ms. Tammy, Ms. Montressia, Ms. Latoya, Ms. Tucker, Ms. Anna, Ms. Shaee, Ms. Kathryn, Ms. Adriana, Ms. Bonnie and Ms. Flores are all wonderful and supportive staff. Paid $97 for a round of golf that took 5 hours to play today. Told the 3 guys sitting at the desk when we finished & they said “oh the course was just busy today”. Then I told them there was 3 holes open ahead of us. They said – oh you should have called us. I told them there would be a review on this as I walked out. One guy ran out after me and said – I just got here – were understaffed. Ok – I just paid $97 which is at LEAST twice as much as any other County course. NO reason to be understaffed. Would not recommend playing here if you don’t want to spend half the day here.Randy Baseman

Once back out to a street from inside the park, I realized I didn't know what road I was on or what direction took me home! Very nice county course. Well taken care of and the greens were in great shape – and VERY FAST. Not too much trouble to get into – very little water and when you were in the sand it wasn't too difficult to get out. Everything about the course was very clean. Initially I wanted a shorter dance class to see if my daughter even liked dance before we committed to anything longer and saw an ad about a mini session at APA. (She was 4 or 5 then) She loved it and could even dance on stage in a real show. It was a great way to introduce dancing to her without a ton of commitment. Since then we have done another mini session, a summer camp, and now we do dance once a week all school year long. The costume prices are reasonable (APA does a great job showing costs up front), the makeup (costume and hair too) expectations are appropriate and she is having fun. This year especially I think they are handling the challenges with Covid so well, it really is a testament to how professional, caring, and positive they are.Leslie Carver

My Daughter has been attending dance lessons here for over 6 months, She absolutely loves the classes and teachers, the center's support staff are great with assisting Parents and notifying us of any changes or updates. the Dance Teachers genuinely care for the children and strive to create an inclusive, fun learning experience. My daughters have loved their first year at APA! The Tap & Ballet combo class for 3 and 4 year olds has been a great fit for our little ladies. They are excited to attend every week and have grown throughout the year in skill and confidence. We absolutely love APA! Our daughter has been taking dance classes at the Franklin location for 3 years now and she loves it! The staff is very friendly and you can tell that the dance teachers love their jobs as well. They are very good with the kids and we especially love the fact that they do not focus so much on being a “perfect” dancer, but rather making sure the kiddos are having fun and enjoying what they are doing. Our family also enjoys how the owner includes the families in many community events that they organize throughout the year such as, the Community Holiday party, Easter Egg Hunt, 4th of July Parades in Oak Creek and Franklin, and at the end of Summer, a pool party at Cool Waters. And we also love that APA has two recitals each year in the winter and spring (which are optional) for their students which are held at the South Milwaukee PAC! My daughter has be going to APA for 2 years now, going into her third year! She absolutely loves going to class on a weekly basis as they are learning technique and having fun in class. I don't have others in Milwaukee to compare to, but I was in dance my whole life and this this what I would expect out of a school. There are events throughout the year outside of just dance that is open to the public (Halloween trick or treat, egg hunt for Easter) that has been great! The recitals are nice as they have good class sizes and you can easily see your child on stage. The recitals are only about 1.5 hours as APA has many – I've heard other schools where you sit for many hours to watch your child in 1 or 2, 2 minute routines. I do look forward to continuing at APA and see how my child progresses in her dancing.Katie Schmitz

APA is amazing! The staff is always so courteous, friendly and helpful. The entire business is extremely well run and organized, the teachers are excellent at what they do and you can they truly enjoy it! I also really like that APA keeps the music, choreography and costumes child friendly and age appropriate, this is so important these days. They also have 2 recitals a year….my husband and I love it because we get to see our daughter perform more than once and her costume gets a bit more use and our daughter loves it because she loves to perform. They also create a wonderful place for young students to not only have fun, but also learn the technique and discipline of the arts. APA is the best!Beth Lund

My father (& his father before him) owned So-Lite Neon Signs, which once occupied this historic Cream City brick building. I now live in PA so HAD to come see what's become of this place as soon as I got back to MKE. Much disappointment when I realized Arts @ Large was closed Dec 23-25. Got to peek into the windows at least & can see what a fantastic job they've done keeping a lot of the original charm & details. Can't wait to get back & see the inside ✈ (& sorry! Didn't see the whole place, but the new digs for Arts @ Large is coming along great. There was an exhibit up in the gallery, the cafe/coffee shop just got a newly finished original mosaic "backsplash" installed, a corner will have a marketplace with art items by local artists for sale, (including myself). There's more I did not see but come to the opening on July 19th, also MKE Gallery night, to get the latest on AAL's new home.Janet F

Arts at large is a place you can eat healthy pizza, salads, dressings and beverages. You can use your artistic talents there to use in business, work place, gifting or leisure. I have been in Adisi Imagery's CoLab class since March. Thomas has really helped me to achieve my dreams in acting. Only after two months I got 8 call backs and I played a main role in a USC student film in May. And I'm still using the company to help cultivate my career. Nice venue, but security is terrible. Never have been to a worst concert. A group was loud, obnoxious and dancing so no one could see. 3 complaints and they were moved. They then proceeded to yell at the performers until they gave them attention to have a conversation with them. Then the whole crowd felt they could do so. Last time I checked I paid money for a concert not a group therapy session where everyone speaks.Destiny Hamblin

I saw Debbie Gibson live at the Northern Lights theater at the Potawatomi Casino in Milwaukee. I'm writing this review to thank the staff of Northern Lights. At the very last minute, our seats were upgraded to the front row. This was unexpected and very much appreciated. I wish I remembered the woman's name, but you literally made my whole year! What an interesting and majestic theater. Small venue, plenty of room to relax & enjoy the show. Pre or post show, the games are right there to enjoy as well as grabbing a soda from their free self service soda fountains.
