I realize that my opinion can't stand for the whole school (chemical engineering​ 2017), but having held a student job that allowed me to see a lot of the behind the scenes stuff and was part of a department that was in the midst of a lot of changes, I do think I can offer some insight. First, unless you're a proactive genius who wants to do research their entire life, don't bother coming here. This school doesn't care about industry or the jobs it offers. This school talks a lot, but doesn't follow through very well. For instance, the higher ups tend to be good, but the people below them are horrible. The career center is a joke, the admin people are flakes who pretend to know what they're doing, and the professors are very hit or miss. How this school got "best undergrad teaching" is a mystery to me. The only good majors are comp sci and bio. The rest of the departments, especially mine, are either full of hot air, stupid in their decision making, or just plain lost. This university attracts a lot of insanely bright students to their undergraduate program and the stem majors would suck without them. God knows the STEM majors don't get genuine help from their professors. I had to go an extra year because of the negligence of my department and two of the many professors that left during my time were upset and thought I should have graduated a year earlier. I almost transferred twice. My department, similar to many others, don't have any connections to companies in industry. This school also hates transfer students despite having a lot of them. Don't expect to finish any degree in 4 years if you're transferring in. There's no social life here because the school is filled with pasty nerds. This is the worst school in the state of Maryland (and possibly in the US). Several buildings on campus are run down (the Sondheim building has even had asbestos in it). The quality of the food is poor and it's overpriced. The social life sucks. It's not a well-known school outside of Maryland. And most importantly, classes are insanely difficult (especially for STEM majors). The classes aren't designed to weed out the slackers. They're designed to weed out the people who try their absolute hardest (and sacrifice things such as sleep and a decent social life) but can't keep up with the immense workload thrown at the students and/or approach assignments with the same exact mindset as the professors. Exams are geared less toward understanding important subject material and more toward deciphering what the professors are actually asking. This school is nothing but a weed out school. I know students who are very intellectually gifted yet still struggle with courses only because of the professors. Almost every professor, by the way, couldn't care less about students and (one would think) they take pride in handing out bad grades – maybe because it inflates their ego of "how brilliant they are compared to others". One more note on the courses – for many courses there is one week between the final exam and the last normal exam of the semester. The biggest mistake I've ever made was attending this "school". I can honestly say that attending UMBC feels like a form of imprisonment. I can't overstate how much I truly despise this school. Please don't make the same mistake I did – go to UMD, Towson, or really anywhere but UMBC.Bucky C

There are a lot of great things about UMBC, the career center is great and there are some top-notch professors. There are some problems though. One annoying thing is they nickel and dime you for everything. Parts of the campus are run down looking and they wont go there during the tour. Most of my professors have been good but my girlfriend who is an art major has had more than one professor that just had students watch online videos instead of teaching them animation topics. -Library carpet is worn out -Chairs in library are so gross your arms stick to them -ITE building has chairs with foam falling out -You must pay to play ping pong or any game in the "game room" -The billing dept gives you very little time to pay the bill and is quick to issue an expensive late fee -Social life isn't great on campus Another thing worth noting that has unfortunately been getting worse is UMBC's leadership imposing their political motives on students through 'updates' on current events. Updates are fine but the vocabulary used in some of the 'updates' is disrespectful to some students who don't agree with the same viewpoints as 'UMBC leadership'. Let's stay professional UMBC cut out the political BS or we will end up like Berkeley…John Park

I’m a Ph.D. student School of Business in accounting major, I’ve been at this university for only one semester. I have left since then, becuase of what I went through. Work load is extremely high, and the disrespect that me and my classmates got from the professors is unbearable. Don’t even give it a slight thought of applying here.USA

Education major. I enjoyed my classes and the instructors. I overpaid for what is really a worthless degree because school districts do not want experienced teachers. The issue is experienced teachers have higher salaries compared to new teachers. So while the university can claim a certain job placement rate, the situation changes after a few years on the job. Considering all the money education students have paid Loyola University Maryland, I have never heard about Loyola lobbying for better working conditions for teachers. That's crummy. Every entity wants to take, take, take from education majors but never give back to help our community. I had to pay for my own teaching internship. I thought that was normal at the time, but it's not. Other majors get paid to intern. Do not waste your money on an education degree. Enter teaching via Teach for America or Urban Educators instead. Or better yet, avoid the profession. Please check into the turnover rate.Share D

From the perspective of an African American student, I want to warn potential minorities. I did not experience a really good first year at this school. The professors are not as great as they have told you. At least for the freshman year. A couple of the professors I had, never returned papers and won't send emails. Many times they would change the syllabus and give you last minute assignments. I struggled a lot even with all the extra time I spent on all the classes and getting tutored. This disappointment I encountered has occurred to other freshman students as well. Don't be fooled by the lovely campus now. That's what drew me at first. Not only am I transferring, but soooo many others are also. Be far warned and save some money also. Side note, many Class of 2020 freshman have experienced some unpleasant people. My son is graduating this May and we were extremely pleased with the college. The campus is like a park! My son put a great deal into the College and got back what he put in, a great education, great experiences, a great professional network and great friends. The private school setting adds the lifetime camaraderie. It's small enough that you can actually get to know your professors, yet big enough for professional opportunities. Being in Baltimore and so close to DC, you cannot lose for internships and jobs. Good luck to all! My experience at the Barrow Group has truly helped me not to give up as an actor. After moving to NYC in 2009, my very talented friend recommended that I take classes at The Barrow Group. I trusted his recommendation because he was very knowledgable about the class options in the city. I am so thankful that I found the Barrow Group!! I really missed my theatre community from Graduate School and the Barrow Group became my NYC home base. I have taken four classes with Lee Brock and I have learned so much from her. She helped me go back to the beginning…back to those years before all of the training…Lee helped me go back to the 'Story.' She helped me to focus on what truly matters…telling the story! The teaching style of the Barrow Group is extremely accessible to actors. You can get a feel for the teachings style by reading Seth Barrish's book "An Actor's Companion: 99 Bit of Craft." I am starting my fourth class tomorrow. Obviously, I love this place. The teachers are friendly, down to earth, and REALLY know their stuff. It really is amazing, the learning curve, and how much you do learn during just one class, let alone three. The teaching methods are so great, it makes you almost feel like what you have learned should have been common sense. I've attended one of their shows (so far), and it was really an inspiring experience, with just superb acting. Learn from the best. When I was 19 years old, I was accepted to the Lee Strasberg Theater Institute. It was the highlight of my life at the time. The great teachers back then were Harv Dean and David Gideon. I went to school here part time for 9 months to learn acting at its very basic. If you can afford going to the school and want to learn acting from the aspect of the instrument, then I highly recommend going here. The most important thing I learned from this school, is that even if you attend the classes and do your scene work, you need to be out pounding the pavement and looking for work in the industry, an agent and possibly a manager. I would not call the school glamorous but it does show great pride and respect for people who walks through their doors. If you are serious about acting and show business, this is the place to be. Although I am old enough to be the GRANDmother of most of the students, I had the honor to chat with Lee Strasberg himself, one morning, years ago. He spent nearly a half hour on the phone with me – a total stranger. I had acting aspirations back then (I am a freelance writer today). And I have never forgotten his generosity, wisdom, and graciousness to me – someone he would never meet in person. I love stopping by whenever I can, to donate theatre books, costume pieces, and just sniff around who's doing what. My daughter was constantly singled out and told this school was not for her. We have open dialogue about how she was traumatized at Mercy and how depressed the environment made her feel. As a senior in college, she now know the issue was the administration who constantly targeted her and made her an outcast.The damage this treatment causes young black girls is unspeakable. This museum and library is a must see if you're visiting the Baltimore area or if you are planning a day trip. Amongst the 48 room mansion you will be stunned by the famous John Work Garrett Library. There are over 30,000 books, some of the oldest and rarest in history. The library is opened to public for private event's upon reservation. The mansion is filled with amazing original artwork like picasso, François Auguste René Rodin and many other collectors and patrons of the arts. There is even a guest book signed by all of The Evergreens visitors including Amelia earheart. I was very impressed by the many layers of architecture and history this beautiful place has to offer. I recommend visiting in the summer so you can experience the true beauty of the formal gardens but any day out of the year is perfect if you want to retain a part of history.Andrea Bosley

Absolutely inspiring place. I've never seen such an incredible private library. What a family that is, that put together such a magnificent collection of books and artwork. The tour was rigid, however, and we were rushed through the last room, the one designed by Ballet Russe's Leon Bakst, and we didn't get a chance to read explanations of the display. I don't know why the hurry, as no one was waiting for the following tour. Would suggest a bit more flexibility so that people can ask questions and take a bit of time. We made the trip to Evergreen mainly to see that room so we were disappointed in the end.Dolores Brown

Today we had the pleasure of touring Evergreen. We were greeted immediately and made to feel welcome. I have never had such a docent as Mumtaz. He was charming, extremely knowledgeable, and brought the past to life. I left wanting to know more due to his enthusiasm. The home is stunning with many interesting and unusual pieces. the theater is quite nice the trouble is there were too many seats in box j to allow us to sit comfortably. and this is important the boxes are on orchestra level not where they typically exist in the mezzanine. big surprise. there are two rows and if you're seated in one of the chairs there's no space for the person in front to sit. they're simply isn't enough real estate on the aisle side of the box was extremely disappointed that throughout the entire show the ushers were permitting guests to walk to their seats, blocking our view for pretty much the first 20 minutes of the show. that made it extremely difficult to know what was going on and enjoy the event there are also pillars that block your view when you're sitting in the boxes I did enjoy the concession stand and the options. if I choose to go to this venue again I will get seats closer to the stage in the orchestra section.D Magnus

I went to The Lyric to see The Temptations and The Four Tops. It was a great show, very fun. I sat on the second level balcony. It was sometimes hard to hear clearly. The ushers were helpful. The area that The Lyric is in, is in walking distance of restaraunts and parking. All in all I enjoyed the venue.V Drake

We got free tickets thanks to patron donations, so I can't really complain too much. But I have to say there are a few logistical things that bothered me. For one they still enforce incredibly strict Covid rules even though they require everyone to be fully vaxxed including boosters. Why still wear a mask then? It was hard to sit in the heat with a mask. The prices for concessions were quite high and worst part was I couldn't bring it into the theater even though they made me purchase a cup with lid for a dollar. In other theaters you're allowed to bring those cups into the theater. The play we watched was interesting… I almost walked out in the beginning, but for mere reasons of intrigue decided to stay and watch the whole thing. It turned out to be so bizarre it was actually worth watching. Certainly far from what I had expected and on a very distant realm from traditional theater. My favorite performer was the dancer who was very interesting to watch. There were some grotesque elements that made a couple in the front seat leave presumably out of disgust. I was safe in the back but would have been pretty upset if I was sprayed with liquids like some people in the front.Raymond R.

What a lovely place to spend a night. The event? It was a celebration for educators, and so this location was selected. Tucked away between a line of buildings, except for the brilliantly-arched lighting and signage, you could easily pass it. However, once you make the deliberate move up the 8 or so steps to the building, the brilliance really shines. You arrive into a lobby reception area that is open and well-laid out. On your right is a little cafe and bar with an opposing open dining area, across from another cool hangout spot. Above you appears the balcony and entrance to upper seats set by recessed lights and artwork And to your left, and in front, open standing area or picture taking space, with leather-cushioned seats for the fatigued. Once you enter the amphitheater, seats are arranged descending towards the stage. Acoustics were great, setting okay. Only a bit of difficulty with parking because of location. This review is for the restaurant on the second floor of the theater where you can order a meal before the play starts. It's called Dooby's. I had New England clam chowder. It was not as creamy as it is supposed to be. There were plenty of potato chunks, not enough clam chunks, and not enough herb seasoning. I also had a turkey and grilled vegetable sandwich. The turkey was good, but there were not enough grilled vegetables. My wife liked her tomato soup, but she was disappointed by the crab cake. This is Maryland. They should have put in lump crab meat. This was the first time I saw a play at this theater. The space is quite intimate with all seats close to the stage. The seats wrap around three sides of the stage. I didn't go up to the second balcony, but I suspect that those seats, with a downward view of the stage, might not be quite as desirable as the orchestra and first balcony seats. The set of the show that I saw, Alice in Wonderland, was very nicely designed. The acting was over the top, appropriate for this show. The singing was musical, and the dancing was playful. Wonderful venue and production! Came here to see Twelfth Night and it was a delight. The show was excellent. The building is beautiful inside and they have a bar with drinks and snacks. Nice set of theaters with an organic, neighborhood feel. Friendly staff and clean facilities. Comfortable chairs and temperature. Not a fan of the service fee per ticket when buying as a bundle. That may prove to be cost prohibitive to some. No dedicated parking and street parking is limited. No local metro but streetcar stop is across street. Saw a fascinating and moving play called "The Agitators" about the decades long friendship between Frederick Douglass and Susan B Anthony. It was my first time to The Atlas and it did not disappoint. Just attended a packed theater for the play " Flowers for Phyllis " … the lead ( Kenyatta Hardisson ) was outstanding … the management staff and volunteers of the Arena Theater have done an excellent job of maintaining history in the heart of Baltimore … if you can and however you can … support the oldest continously operating Black Theater in the country … if we don't it will not be done !Howard Roberts

I was at this venue assisting with a outreach project hosted by local celeb Ms. Maybelle and Teeshirt Brian. It was a great event. The venue has parking all around. It's close to one of the more urban areas of Baltimore so you should be more watchful especially in the evening however I've never had an issue. Christine is a great instructor to take your vocal skills to the next level, whether you are an amateur performer or already a professional. Lessons with Christine are not just about singing well but working towards being an overall professional tier performer. I began lessons with her a year ago when I was welcomed to be a cantor at the Cathedral of Mary Our Queen in Baltimore. I had previously taken years of voice lessons with other instructors but had some problem areas I could not move past. Working with Christine through video lessons during the pandemic has helped me improve my sight-reading ability, refine my ear, and give added ease and clarity to both extremes of my range. Under her instruction, my musical skills progressed enough to allow me the opportunity to cantor a televised Mass for Archbishop Lori and be invited to teach pediatric voice lessons to a former nanny client. Some voice teachers emphasize flattery and positive feedback to build confidence in their students. While this can be helpful for some very nervous singers, Christine does not subscribe to this philosophy. What this means is that you can trust that Christine's feedback will be honest and she will work with you until that positive feedback can be provided in earnest by the professionally trained ear. My favorite thing about Christine as a voice teacher is that she does not stick with a rigidly classical vocal technique. While she can teach this way for those who prefer it, she has the flexibility to work with singers who have a variety of performing goals. Since my primary focus with vocal training was being a Catholic cantor, Christine utilized a blended style between classical and musical theater technique to train my voice specifically for my chosen area of specialization. This crossover training has cultivated a vocal style that is well received both in a church setting and with the general public…which is not something that could be said when my training was limited to exclusively classical technique. If it is your goal to be a better performer and musician, investing in lessons with Christine is worth it! Do it for yourself and the community at large. 🙂Nichole Feltner

A number of years ago, I began with Christine as just another high schooler with a head full of hopes and dreams but little of the requisite technique, experience, or confidence to make those aspirations a reality. In the space of two short years, she helped me develop the skills and attitude to change that. I'm a professional performer now in large part, because of the lessons that I learned with Christine. And I'm a professional educator now in large part, because of the example Christine gave me as a high schooler. Christine is the best kind of performance teacher, one whose professional life as a performer influences their teaching, and visa versa. Don't misunderstand, she is not a performer who teaches to make ends meet, nor is she a teacher who occasionally performs when able or when she has the time. She is both a performer and teacher who has dedicated her life to these two very different crafts. In doing so, she is constantly learning and relearning the lessons of the industry and how best to condense them for her students. Most studios aren't offering what her studio offers. Christine is hands down the best voice teacher I have ever had. After years of group singing, I knew I had developed bad habits, but had given up on lessons. Just one year of working with Christine improved my singing tremendously. I can sing smoothly through breaks now. I understand what "mix" is. My range has increased and my upper register is getting freer and stronger. I've been cast in solo roles in musicals. Besides being a wonderful singer, Christine's talent and credentials as a bona fide teacher make a huge difference in the quality of instruction that her students receive. Lots of people call themselves voice teachers but have nowhere near Christine's level of knowledge and expertise about vocal production and teaching. I asked Max to host a birthday party for my husband. We had a group of about 15 friends at a local restaurant in Baltimore where Max and his wife Melissa (as a great bonus) engaged our group to do 1.5 hours of improv exercises and then a half hour of acting exercises. They made it super fun for our group and it was great for me to see friends that I would have not thought would get into it actually participate. Both Max and Melissa are super engaging and were very flexible with my specific requests. We regularly go to the MET to watch the comedy pigs perform improv and we always end up with a great show!! Every show is always different and the cast is very talented!! Highly recommend! We have also seen a few of the mainstage shows and musicals that are also great shows! Had the absolute pleasure of seeing Radium Girls. The performance was outstanding…I am amazed at how well they orchestrated this play in just a small area yet you could envision the entire scene as if it was a movie. The actors are first class. I've been a part of dozens of productions, from staged readings to full plays and musicals, and every experience has been wonderful. I am a volunteer and I truly enjoy the entertainment of the plays! The staff is outstanding and the student actors and actress are Phenomenal ! Seating is ideal . The only recommendation I say is during intermission make a short announce regarding food concessions for sale and perhaps display or sale some Theater lab paraphernalia such as T-shirts or small bags I would definitely buy one ! I took the "Public Speaking the Actor's Way" class in May 2018 and found it to be well worth the price. The text for the course was full of helpful theory on public speaking using acting techniques. These were put into practice in class. Students learned how to "act" — imagining themselves or the audience in different ways — to bring out their best "performance." I was a student at Lopez Studios for 10 years and it legitimately changed my life. Through the lessons, mentoring, coaching, theatrical productions, and so much more that Lopez offered to me and my siblings, my greatest passions in life were unlocked and my talents discovered. While studying piano, voice, and acting, I had some very memorable and meaningful experiences with multiple instructors. The ones who were the most impactful in my personal journey with the performing arts were Laura Esh (piano), Jennifer Kessler (acting), and Victor Lopez (voice). The founder of the studio was more than just a music teacher to me; he was my mentor, my coach, my friend, my collaborator, my songwriting partner, my role model, and my biggest cheerleader with the possible exception of my parents. He is to this day the only voice teacher I’ve had who was not only 100% supportive about me learning to sing in different genres, but also fully capable of teaching and demonstrating in a WIDE variety of genres at such a high level. This influenced my own performance track and inspired me to pass it on by teaching my voice students in the same way. When I returned to Lopez Studios in 2018 to teach, I was so excited to be part of what they were doing. I was quite pleased (though not surprised) to find that the staff was even more skilled and more fun to work with than I had imagined they would be. The mission was the same, and the quality of education our students received was as great as it ever was in my memory, if not better. I taught there for a year before I moved out-of-state for grad school and my husband’s job. In a perfect world, Lopez Studios would relocate to Nashville, and I’d have my dream job once again. As it is, I can’t wait to come back and music-direct for a camp there this summer! The bottom line is this: I would absolutely recommend Lopez Studios for anyone who is passionate about performing!Hallie Bisaga

Sometimes in one’s life, they happen upon something unexpected that turns out to be life changing. We first came upon Lopez Studios to audition for a show! My son got a role in that show, but also found the place that would be instrumental in not only developing him as a great performer, but also as a human being. Lopez Studios became my son’s “home away from home” offering extreme excellence in his voice and acting development, as is evidenced by the Lopez legacy of stellar careers in entertainment, and also it was a safe and fun family atmosphere in which to develop himself as a person. Victor Lopez became that mentor that makes a huge difference in a young man’s life. The atmosphere at Lopez is consistent with every teacher and the opportunities are vast in so many areas, voice, music, acting, and shows. My son spent his summers in their camps from age 11 until he graduated from High School! I would encourage any family to choose Lopez Studios for their child. As a middle and high schooler, I auditioned for and participated in Lopez plays yearly, enrolled in their acting and dance classes, took private voice and acting lessons, and sang in their Christmas choir. I have countless wonderful memories and friendships and mentorships that empowered me as a performer and an overall person. I also worked for the studio for 3 years as a drama camp counselor as well as participated in their teen camp, and toured with their Lopez Youth Performing Arts group. And my grandmother, brother, and I took a Lopez trip to NYC to see The Lion King and participate in a workshop with Broadway actors. I am planning to return to Lopez for adult voice lessons in the future and would highly recommend their program to any potential student or student parent.
