20 Best Summer Programs In Austin, TX (2022 Updated)

This is a great university! The psychology undergrad program prepared me for success in my current counseling psychology master’s program quite well. The faculty are fantastic and the campus is gorgeous. I appreciated Spanish tutoring with Dr. Escamilla provided by the school as well as numerous career development, grad school application, recreational, and internship placement opportunities! I only wish it was a bit more affordable as even with scholarships it’s quite pricey. But, I am glad they pay their faculty, and I do think they spend the money well on resources that directly positively impact students. They have a career resource center that’ll help alumni with resumes, searching for jobs and more! The gym and yoga studio are great. One of my psychology professors had us meditate as part of class and we did things like go outside to paint together and go to yoga! It was a positive psych class so it fit. This isn’t to say the university was easy or without academic rigor because it was challenging and involved plenty of difficult academic work including research! I do feel it was social justice oriented as I appreciated the Mexican American cultural class in Spanish I took told from an indigenous professor and perspective, though to be even more socially just, reduce the price of tuition! I enjoyed that I knew at least half of the faculty and they knew me and remembered me and would say hi years after I took their class; so much better than just being a number in a big lecture hall! It may not have the rankings or prestige of some larger universities and how can it being so small, but the quality of education and experience is high. Only 1 student was mean to me 1 time my entire undergrad career. Really recommended! I would not have been prepared for my current grad program without SEU…don’t think I would have even gotten in otherwise because I was taught at SEU how to write an ideal essay, APA publication format, interview and interpersonal skills, and was able to achieve high grades because the learning experience is so high; I got my disabilities accommodated for instance. Literally the only reason I cannot give 5 stars is the exorbitant cost that limits many people so they can’t attend or will have a lot of debt. Otherwise, fantastic!Alysia Duemler

I completely agree with a post below about how much I loved this school, yet upon graduation I felt lost and unprepared for the “real world”. I think the staff and curriculum is amazing, I wouldn’t choose differently, but St Eds was like a dream state of mind. That being said , I have obtained a different bachelors degree since graduation and changed my field of study. More real world practicality from the programs perhaps would help prepare future graduates to succeed ! Thank you st Ed’s for an amazing undergrad experience nonetheless, that I will cherish forever. I wanted to make a shitpost review but I can't think of anything funny and I also honestly really like St Eds. It's a good school. If you're ambitious, passionate, and hard working, the teachers will do everything in their power to help you succeed, even if you have mental illness or other problems most people might look down on you for. I really think I'm going to have a good shot at grad school with the support I've gotten at St. Eds and that's not something I'd be able to say about many other schools.Christina

My daughter will begin her sophomore year at CTX next week and she had an amazing freshman experience last year. She lived on campus, which is very safe, clean and engaging community. The dorms are new and very well maintained. The cafeteria food is very good, but like any student it's not home cooking, but they offer healthy choices and a good variety daily. There are MANY opportunities to get involved and the professors are amazing at CTX! This is a small school but with the benefits of a top notch education. The staff challenges the students to serve in the local community and share their talents while pursuing their education. There are opportunities to go on mission trips and our daughter went to Africa for 10 days. She had an amazing experience. Our daughter missed a few days of classes due to an infection and the professors were very understanding. It's a family at CTX and she was immediately welcomed into the family and well cared for as a new student. As her parents and being many miles away, it was reassuring to know what a great community we left her in last fall. We are CTX's biggest fans and have a number of students attending this year, as well as next year because of her great experience. Visit this campus, stay with a current student overnight and get the full experience. If you are looking for a great education, you will be amazed at the talent they assembled in their staff and the excellent students who attend this wonderful school. I love it here at Concordia! I am currently in a summer class here and will be attending my second year at Concordia in the fall. The campus is beautiful and the professors are understanding and very helpful. I love the smaller class sizes they make me feel like I am actually getting what I'm paying for. Tuition for a private school isn't all that bad. I got into 5 other private colleges and 3 state colleges and this was the best rate. With a scholarship paying school off in full isn't all that difficult. I love it here at Concordia and I'm very proud to be a part of the tornado family. I attended the Dallas/Fort Worth campus of Concordia University for a Masters in Education and overall my experience was horrific. My e-mails were ignored for days to weeks from the administration in both Dallas and Austin on important matters ranging from financial aid to course requirements. The campuses appeared to not be able to communicate with one another on even the most basic of tasks which made it incredibly annoying. It has been a frustrating period with this University. I do not recommend this school for a Masters program and if you dare to brave it make sure you steer clear of their Dallas/Fort Worth campus.Jean M

Our son went to magic camp the first week after kindergarten ended and loved it. Now at the end of the summer, he's still proudly doing the magic tricks he learned for us and for friends. We've been to a couple of other summer camps since, which we've also loved, but magic camp is still the kid-voted favorite! We got a good deal for that first week, but overall it's more expensive than the other camps we've done – not something we could do for the whole summer, but I'm sure we'll be back for a week or two each summer and I recommend it for other families.Sherren Harter

This is consistently a summer favorite for both of my kids, we have been so impressed with Fantastic Magic Camp over the years. Extremely well-run and somehow ever-exciting, my 11-year-old daughter and 8-year-old son are always bursting with stories from the daily performances and new tricks to practice and perform. The counselors are positive, patient, and thoughtful , working with the kids to develop new skills and try out a variety of things. Highly recommend!Libby Anderson

Amazing experience for both my boys! They both gave magic shows at home to the family after attending. 🙂 The older one has participated in the leadership program and as a junior counselor after attending as a camper for two years. Visited the field of Light art installation and was blown away. I plan to go back and visit again but probably not on a Saturday night. That seems to be their most popular night, so naturally there's a lot more people. Getting there before sunset was interesting, but personally I think I'll come later in the evening when it's already dark. It was kind of cool to watch the beautiful sunset pass over the field and see the lights slowly come on, but I think the biggest impact of the installation is when it's completely dark. Pay attention to the cycles of the moon as well, because coming on a full moon means it won't be as dark. My still look cool… But I'm going to come when it's a new moon weekend. Parking was pretty easy. We parked off site and they had a shuttle going back and forth fairly regularly to drop us off right at the start of the exhibit where we had to do security check-in and get our tickets scanned.Barbados Pearl

We visited the other evening on one of their late night (I believe every Tuesday through spring). It was $15/person, there was live music, a bar, food trucks, and an ice cream truck for the late night event from 5-8pm. This place was great for kids and families with everything from flowers, trees, trails, playgrounds, and plenty of room to bring your own chairs or picnic blanket! It is also a great date night spot. Plenty of places to sit and enjoy nice conversation or a picnic. I definitely recommend visiting weather you’re a local or coming from out of town! There are memberships that typically pay for themselves within a few visits—we will be investing in one!Sophie Wright

This is a relatively small place, shouldn't take more than 2 hours to see most of what they offer if you're a slow walker. It was gorgeous and packed with many wildflowers, a really great location for kids to hike as well. I would definitely go back for hiking and just being in the outdoors in general. Playground: Several playgrounds are available for children to play in. Restrooms: Excellent restrooms that are extremely clean around the park. If you enjoy seeing theatrical productions then you must see a show at the ZACH Theatre. There are three venues where shows are presented; The Topfer (signature 420 seat), The Kleberg (square 210 set), and The Whisenhunt (circular 130). There is also Bobbi Pavilion which is a pop up mostly used for fundraisers. The ZACH uses these spaces wisely to give the audience a rememberable experience. There is paid parking in front or free parking for show subscribers. The two smaller venues are special where never expect what may happen where twice have been pulled on stage to be part of the show. This why I always prepare myself in case it happens again. As for the cast they perform excellent and will be impressed. The rest of the team does an excellent job with set design, making guest feel welcomed, and bartenders serving tasty drinks. This night I saw ‘The Sound of Music’ and before the show a Polka band entertained the crowd where the stage was enlarged into the seats by having long tables for patrons to sit on the stage. It was very unique and worked well. The performance was spectacular with full crowded on their feet at the end. It’s a special place and reason I renew my subscription every year.Paul Delacruz

Zach is the best theater organization in the Austin area! I've been a season subscriber for 10 years, and can honestly say they always land the perfect performers for their plays and musicals. (Side note: if you see that Paul Sanchez is in a performance, it doesn't matter what it is–it will be incredible!) Every season there is a good balance of performances. Generally, I can rely on at least one musical, one true family friendly play, a well-known work, plus other enjoyable selections. If a season subscription is not your thing, single tickets are available for everyone performance. Also, unlike smaller theaters, Zach is able to have long runs of their shows, so you have many options for attending. Finally, there are no bad seats with either the Topfer Theater (traditional seating) or Kleburg Stage (in the round).Heather C.

This was my first time to Zack and I was really impressed. Everything about my experience was like watching a well oiled machine come to life. Parking was easy, the grounds were beautiful, and the building fresh and clean. We were greeted promptly and had little wait at the Box Office (two really friendly guys helped us). Be prepared to get messy, be prepared to get wet! We loved the Thinkery! It is stimulation overload and there is a lot going on. I wouldn’t be as comfortable taking my 2 kids on my own. But with my husband there we could each follow one around and then move on as needed. There is a painting wall and a water room. There are smocks provided but they can only help so much. Wear clothes you don’t mind getting dirty, and bring back up clothes to change into if you are concerned about that. If you have creative, hands on exploring, fun loving kids, you’ll love the Thinkery. A few of our favorites are the shadow wall, the magnetic ball run wall, the things in motion and the water rooms. Took the kids here one afternoon during spring break. It was very crowded, but we didn't have to wait long for any of the activities. I like that masks are still required, given the amount of small children running around. My son, 7, seemed a little bored after a few minutes with some of the activities, but my daughter, 5, could have spent hours here. We stayed about 90-120 minutes total. Memorable memories for my 7 year old. She was gleeful at every turn. Interactive and educational, this place did not disappoint. Her favorite part, besides the most amazing playground, was probably the interactive farm to market to table area on the second floor. For those disappointed with the mask mandate of the museum, the information was readily available on their website, so be prepared to wear a mask. I went to Ann Richards school for 12 weeks and was quite displeased with the school. There was three to four hours of homework and the school has great athletes but they are so weighed down by the amount of homework that they have their performance is not very good. My family loved it here. Everyone was nice and welcoming. Beautiful, serene and peaceful place. We saw some unique exhibits. Photographers and painters were around painting the scenic views and taking pictures. Several classes to attend for adults and kids. There was a class for kids in session sculpting clay bowls. We saw the same class later walking with their instructor through the trails learning about different plants, trees, and sculptures. Free for educators. A great spot in Austin to walk around in nature and enjoy modern sculptures. There are great views of the lake/river and there are sculpture installations scattered throughout the property, including along the shoreline. It's interesting to see how the sculptures interact with their surroundings versus just being placed in a "white box" museum. Kids can have some room to run, just no touching most of the pieces. It can be a little hot and humid in the summer but as long as you prepare for it then it's manageable. All of the art blended well with their environments. I should have done this a while ago. This summer I brought my daughter to Tapestry for the soul 2 soul tap festival. Hats off to the staff and Acia for a great festival. I am already planning on next year's festival. The instructors were positive and not demeaning. My daughter returned to Florida with a positive attitude and a since of accomplishment doing the intermidiate/ advanced classes being this was her first tap festival. Tapestry, co-founded by Acia Gray and Deirdre Strand, over 30 years ago, is located in Austin Texas. The facility is incredible, with five studios, Tapestry offers classes in multiple dance genres (children and adults, from beginning level to advanced level), houses a professional company, offers competitive rates for classes and studio rentals, and follows strict covid-19 safety protocols! My dad studied under Umlauf in the 1960's. Seeing this with my dad gave me a different perspective. I love the animal sculptures the most. The garden was overflowing with greenery and is very organic. The landscape architecture is a wonderful compliment to the sculptures. And we even saw wildlife – 4 armadillos eating in the wooded area just off the path. Bring your bug spray! We got bitten a lot and that was why we didn't stay longer. Parking is an issue here. Allow extra time and be prepared to walk. Paths were well defined and it seems most of this garden is accessible for wheels. Crushed granite mostly and some cement and brick substrates. It was a must see on our trip. We really liked the staff too. Don't miss it! Restrooms were clean and easy to get to. One of the highlights of our trip. Beautiful and inspiring display of sculpture. Every time I come back to Austin, I try one new place to visit. I checked out the Umlauf Sculpture Garden! Tickets are only $7/person, which makes sense as the garden is rather smaller than I anticipated. I would say you will finish exploring the garden in about 40 minutes. But I still enjoyed it. I came on a Friday morning when they opened. The staff was nice and you get a sculpture guide so you can read more about each sculpture created by Charles Umlauf. When you're done, return the guide. I will say that there's very limited parking so if this garden is on your list, I recommend coming as soon as they open to get a parking spot close to the entrance, otherwise there's overflow parking down the street. Umlauf was a beautiful location to host our wedding. Each venue has its own peculiarities and pros and cons, so make sure you understand them before you book (the garden is open to the public during the day and going late at Umlauf is not an option, as amplified sound must be turned off at 10 PM per Austin city ordinance). You’d probably want to go with mostly preferred vendors, which is what we did. That being said, we had a wonderful experience at Umlauf. Office staff were great to work with (Amanda was always very helpful and responsive). We fit our wedding of about 50 people underneath the pagoda for dinner which was the perfect setting. The garden was pretty remarkable for our ceremony. And despite that ordinance, we were still able to host a great dance party for our guests. We highly recommend Umlauf.Adam Rodrigues

This school is a gem in Austin, TX. I sent my kids here for five years because I am a big believer in immersive language instruction (English, French, and Spanish), but found it to be a caring environment with high caliber students, teachers, administration, and parent community. My children (who now speak beautiful, fluent French and functional Spanish) have since transitioned seamlessly to Eanes ISD where they are thriving academically and socially. This was a great experience.. when we first got there it must have been nap time because not one animal was awake that we could see so we just walked around and took in the scenery and by the time we got to a point where we had to turn around everybody was awake . And we figured out that it was now feeding time… Very cool to watch the animals come out of their slumber to let the humans know it's time to eat! All the enclosures were large and clean with plenty of stimulation for the animals so that was great to see… They also have plaques or signs on most of the enclosures with a backstory as to how the animal ended up there, if there was a story to be told. I'm giving it 4 stars because the staff was very nice and it seems they really do love the animals and what they do there. The problem is it's not a zoo it's more like a wild life exhibit. I think calling it a zoo makes people show up and be disappointed. We were disappointed but still had a nice time. If you want to see a animal exhibit then please go there are animals there and the staff is friendly and the gift shop is really nice we spent about $60 in it but I think it was fairly priced. I had a lot of fun here. There were lots of unique animals. A lot of them were tired from the summer heat but so were we. It's a fun place to walk around. We turned our backs to the white tiger and she jumped at us. It was startling but pretty cool at the same time. It may not be as paved and built up as zoos like the San Antonio and Houston Zoo but it's has it's own charm that I really enjoyed. It was amazing to be able to see a rescue zoo! We got to see many of the animals eating and relaxing, it was a really great experience. I would recommend to anyone who lives in the area. Visited on

My son and daughter both have participated in the Gateway Program at Berkeley 2 Academy (B2A) while applying for their colleges in high school. They both took the SAT and ACT preparation classes at B2A in summer as well. We knew B2A since 2012. My daughter has also participated in the B2A’s Step Program since her 9th grade. Our family is greatly thankful for B2A’s assistance and support through these years. Those programs/classes are so helpful and the counselors/teachers are very professional and knowledgeable, plus the B2A director is so kind and care about students. Now my son has graduated from UT Engineering School with honors degree and started to work in a big company in San Francisco last August. My daughter is going to the UT McCombs School of Business with scholarships in upcoming fall of 2020. All the hard work and B2A tuition paid off. Thank you again for your great services!Jenny Yan

My daughter used these B2A services during her high school: Summer classes, SAT prep, and Gateway program. She got near perfect score SAT, perfect scores in subject tests. And She took these tests only one time, no re-takes. Through Gateway program and essay mentoring of Sarah, my daughter was able to get into UPenn (one of Ivy Leagues Schools) – school of Wharton for the business major. She was also admitted to UT McCombs. Her dream school cannot be realized without great help from B2A. I would say it is worth spending money with B2A services as educational investment. And it will be one of your best investments. It is worth mentioning that parents want to take advantage of one free consulting meeting as early as when kids in 9 or 10th grade to plan out for all high school years.tungnpham

This was our first time to try an after school coding class and we are so happy we decided on Launch. The experience has been above and beyond our expectations. From the first day… our 10 year old son has loved learning at Launch. We are doing twice a week drop in classes and love the flexibility that they offer. Everyone on the Launch team are so friendly, knowledgeable and fun! He looks forward to his classes each week so much more than he looked forward to sports classes in the past. We are very impressed when we read what he has worked on and accomplished each day on the “daily diary" he brings home after class. My son is very excited after his free class to join. He already spoke of Java & some other programming language I don’t understand 🤣, and I’m very excited about him learning such invaluable skills. I am happy to know that there is schedule flexibility too; my son wants to do his two hours a week (based on the monthly choice) on one day each week & there was no problem with that. It will allow me to have dinner & a pastry at the cute, French Bistro next door, as well as get groceries without worrying about time. We have been super impressed with Code Galaxy. My 11 year old came in with some coding knowledge from previous courses, and was able to move quickly through some basic lessons to get right up to a challenging curriculum. He's now working through their Game Design course learning C# and Unity and really understands the code on a deep conceptual level. Can't speak highly enough of the school, instructors, and instruction. Been training at Atos Austin for a few years now, and it's become like a 2nd home/family for me. After training at a couple of other BJJ academies prior to joining Atos, I was struck by the greater level of detail given to teaching techniques, as well as the great depth of knowledge held by Professor Gui, Coach Antonio, etc… My technique and understanding of BJJ principles/fundamentals, while still in need of lots of work, grew much faster after coming to Atos. Besides world class BJJ instruction, though, is a great community that I'm proud to be a part of, with genuinely nice and caring people. This has been a really great experience for my daughter, who is 7 almost 8. She has started to go almost everyday since signing up! I signed her up so she could learn to defend herself & gain self confidence. It's definitely working! I see how she's changed from her 1st week to now 2.5 months in. She also loves it when she's rewarded with a stripe on her belt & has learned to understand they come with practice & drive. Which I believe is great for her later on in life, all in all it's a win win. This is family oriented but with the right amount of intensity for the kids in the training. Our entire family goes here. The studio is CLEAN, well maintained and the environment is family friendly. All feel welcome here kids, parents, teens, and women (there are many ladies going here). The Professor (term used for the lead instructor) is knowledgeable and experienced as a practitioner and teacher. From beginners to seasoned veterans the team here will push you to become as good as you are willing to be, without the "tough guy " mentality found at some places. My official advisor was Dr. Hixson (EE) and my co-advisor was Dr. Hamilton (ME), so I was a mix of both EE/ME and physical acoustics. I did not appreciate the education I was getting until I got out and practiced in my field with graduates of top tear schools (Brown/Stanford/G-Tech/Penn State/MIT) – Texas provided an outstanding training. I was blessed to have gone through two world class researchers and practitioners and was taught by a handful of other big names in acoustic of solids (Dr. Bedford/Dr. Blackstock/Drumheller). When people say graduate school was easy….I don't think they were in my classes. I also think very highly of the Aerospace and ME systems/controls folks, who mix the rigor of the theory with the application: From paper and pencil, to the simulation to the application.Aldana Guillermo

You'll be kept away from the regular folks and the pretty parts of campus most of the time, but in exchange you will form lifelong bonds of camaraderie as you join forces with all shapes and forms of life to defeat a common enemy: your classes. We relocated to Austin last year and as such enrolled our child into a Spanish immersion school even though he had no real Spanish speaking experience. We were put in touch with Austin Spanish Academy by our new school to help bridge the gap and prepare our child for first grade. It has been an absolute pleasure working with Ana and her team. Our child has bonded with the teachers and learned so much in the year we have been taking lessons. Ana is very flexible and understanding when it comes to schedule changes, communicating with our child’s school as she know many of the Spanish teachers from her extensive experience in the industry. My teacher Ms. Claudia is fabulous and has taught me a ton of concepts I never would have understood so clearly on my own. She makes sure I get a ton of practice listening, speaking, and reading. Chris' program is amazing! Our son and daughter have been in many of Chris Hyde's programs over the past 7 years. He makes everything fun, interactive, and memorable. The skills they have learned have included shelter-building, cooking, camouflage, tracking, plant and animal identification, wilderness awareness, fire-making, outdoor safety, first aid, water purification, archery, primitive tool making, and so much more. Chris is constantly improving his own education, and passing that cutting-edge and primitive knowledge onto his students. He makes being outside a positive and amazing experience in all types of weather. I trust Chris with my kids. He is smart, kind, and a natural teacher! My family has taken classes with Chris Hyde for 6 years now. I have 2 children ages 10 and 11 who love natureversity! They have acquired so many different skills from making bow drills, animal traps, plant identification, animal tracking to tincture making and fire and shelter building. Not only has Chris helped my kids learn and appreciate the natural world around them, he has instilled a sense of confidence in them that is apparent when they are outdoors. Natureversity's adult classes are also very cool. I have taken a basket weaving class and it was very fun. I will be taking more classes in the near future. Our son always looks forward to the time he spends with his monthly Natureversity group. At the end of their afternoons together, he is frequently filthy, excited, and filled with tales of their adventures and his new discoveries about edible plants, run-ins with creatures, climbing trees, cooking over the fire, fort construction and games they played. He says he feels so free when he is outdoors and we are grateful for the mentor he has found in Chris, as well as the comraderie and teamwork with the other boys. Austin karate academy has been family for us for the past 7 years. Master Mukherjee is a great instructor who not only has the expertise and experience but also is very encouraging and genuinely cares for each and every student. During this difficult time when we are dealing with this global pandemic and the center is closed, my kids and all the students of Austin Karate academy are constantly being challenged and trained under Master Mukherjee's leadership. Austin Karate Academy is a wonderful school that I would 100% recommend to anyone interested in learning martial arts! One of the best things about the program is that the instructors really care about the students. It feels like a family. The kids who come to class gain confidence and discipline each lesson. Austin Karate Academy is amazing! Our 7 year old started over a year ago in Tiny Tigers. I could not believe his focus and attention that he developed from this program. We hosted our sorority's sisterhood event there yesterday and had the GREATEST time!! The whole property was so beautiful and definitely the largest dock I've seen in the city. Aubrea and all the other employees were so helpful and kind- I was blown away. Not to mention, the picnic tables on the water and on the patio were great too. All our members had nothing but great things to say and we will definitely be back soon! If you are visiting ATX or just looking for a fun summer activity- try out Austin Rowing! Had an absolute blast at the Austin rowing club! The staff was so helpful and engaging. Ethan checked me out and he was an absolute delight. Aubrea helped me get into my boat down at the dock and gave me suggestions of where to paddle. Awesome awesome experience! I even got to see the bats fly out from under the Congress bridge right before I got off the water. Definitely recommend this place to anyone trying to experience ladybird lake.Henry Andrastek

Stumbled across the Austin Rowing Club on a morning walk while in town for a trade show. Great location, great prices, great people. Ethan greeted me immediately, and guided me through the quick and easy kayak rental like a champ.
