We heard about Chaminade University from a friend and when our daughter was accepted to Manoa and Chaminade, we flew out to tour both colleges. Both were beautiful but we were sold at the sheer “like home” feeling Chaminade offered. Everyone was so friendly and the dorms felt like a smaller scale apartment building. Don’t get me wrong Manoa was GORGEOUS and great, but the common bathrooms shared by each floor was a big concern for us. Chaminade is small enough where the teachers and staff actually know your name and there’s a wonderful support system for their students. Our daughter came from a small private school in LA and we felt leaving the mainland and coming to HI was culture shock enough; so coming to a smaller school offered some familiarity and comfort. She is now in her second semester of her second year and absolutely LOVES it! The island, the school, her 4 Roomate’s, and her new island Ohana have made this her second home, and we feel very safe with her there. I can not say enough wonderful things about this school. From the way they handled the pandemic, to their small classrooms & fun activities- it’s just amazing all around!Jorge Santiago

I loved my time at Chaminade …this was when there was still an off-campus coed dormitory called Hale Pua on King Street and we would ride our bikes to school everyday.. lots of friends.. didn't have a car at the time so we would drive w kimo Ryan and his Jeep Ryan Foo my roommate also had a car …there was Mike from New Jersey who had a motorcycle shipped out , and Jay from Alaska also had his BMW …bodysurfing at Sandy Beach..& surfing north shore …we had lots of fun back in the day this was in the 80s …I'm an old man now but I know Chaminade is still a great place… lots of fun good learning …study hard, play hard ,pray hard keep on surfing, Surf's Up, Hang Ten Aloha! Went for a meeting on Kalaepohaku Rocks, due to covid and everything were headed towards November/December 2022, St. Louis staff are friendly and personable, like because alumni association makes it possible for any boys to attend Saints. They said in the televise 175th. Anniversary, Whether parents are affluent, middle income or below,every boy that's interested. Allow St. Louis Administration decide what each boy financial aid will be in order for him to attend Red, White & Blue Crusaders Exactly as they said the how upper classmates take cares to the lower classmates as younger brothers. I recently visited Hawaii to attend my graduation ceremony for earning and completing my doctorate degree in 2012. I enjoyed everything about Hawaii and was sad to leave and looking forward to returning soon. The people, the food, the beaches, and the shopping are memories and experiences I will never forget. The Hawaiian Luau and the hoarse back riding are experiences that I will never forget. The Diamond Head Mountain lookout was fabulous and fantastic. Campus is a disgrace. Oh Hi, you paid $2,000+ for classes? Well welcome! Now you just need to give us 20$ so that you are allowed to head to your class without us kicking your ass for coming here in your personal mode of transportation to get what you paid for. We also- as a reminder on your permit receipt, don't care if your car gets broken into, or stolen as it's not our responsibility. Oh but don't worry, enjoy parking your vehicle in our paved lot or our cool dirt, graveled dusty lot. We also have nice guys driving and sitting around to be sure no students forget to pay for their car. Be careful though, we have no white lines indicating parking stalls! Now before you think of heading toward your classroom, Don't forget! it will cost at least $1,000 more in order to fully participate in your class. Once you give all your money, welcome to your classrooms located in these tall apartment buildings. Oh one more thing, watch out on the way, as vehicles need to drive in the path you need to take to get to your class. Of course, if you want to kill yourself it will gladly make it easier for you! plus, we have many students present on both sides of the single path to your classroom, and situated all around campus that love to puff smoke and/or vapor in your face so that your lungs burn, eyes get irritated, and you get asthma and possibly an allergic reaction. If you don't mind people exhaling their cigarette smoke or vape being blown in your face while you walk to class, this is the campus for you. Oh and perfect for your kids too because they have a pre-school program. The caretakers also take them out around campus for a nice stroll. The teacher who teaches ESL23-24 is very rude. She like using threatening words to respond the student , if you want to ask or figure out any further issues of your homework or tests. She looks kind at first , but when you get her class , then you will find her teaching method is very arbitrary. I never met this kind of teacher before.Wei Yu

I found a psychologist I was interested in via Psychology Today. I called and left a message expressing interest in that particular therapist. I received a phone call back asking me to call or text them back. I texted. The next thing I know I am receiving invitations from a different therapist asking me to fill out information before our first visit. He’s an MSW, not a psychologist. I also have an MSW and had been specifically looking for a psychologist. Honolulu Psych Collective just ignores my initial request for a specific therapist. They never asked me any questions as to what kind of therapist I was looking for. Didn’t ask me if I prefer certain qualification, methodology, methodology, male/female, type of therapy … nothing. When I asked who the guy was emailing me for information, they said: “He is the therapist. Were you looking to see someone else?” He is the therapist? Not the one I asked for and most definitely not one that was discussed with me. I responded, again, with the name of the therapist I was interested in. They responded: “My apologies, Dr —— does not have any openings for new clients until January.” Nothing else. No inquiry to see what kind of therapist might work for me. Nothing. My experience was very confusing, unprofessional and, obviously, unfruitful.Christian Stettler

If you like having your financial aid cancelled the week before classes start, having acadamic advisors who have no clue what they're talking about, and being stranded in student housing with no adequate meal plan, this is probably the school for you. If you like weekly mental breakdowns, constantly asking yourself whether or not HPU is really an accredited university, and being lied to about the status of the accreditation, this is definitely the place for you. HPU is having issues with accreditation, but rather than being honest with students, they sent out an email saying that they are a "bachelor's general" and "master's general school." What does that even mean? I read their accreditation report and WASC didn't say anything about this. Also, the staff has messed up my transcript so many times. I was a day into my last semester when I received an email, well after I was told I could definitely graduate, saying that I was two credits short. Okay, fair enough, but then I expect to use my loans to pay for the $2300 class. Nope. HPU wouldn't let me. They also cut financial aid for textbooks before classes even start. And let's not forget about the time my on-campus loft flooded and the student life staff told me to clean up what was basically a swamp with towels. No one I know likes this school. My advice? Run. As fast as you can. And don't look back. Don't even apply. You're signing up for the most stressful time of your life. The only good part of this school is the English department (I was an English major). The instructors in that department actually care about students and their success, but outside of those few people? No one wants to help. I like to think the nightmare is finally over, but my diploma hasn't arrived yet, so who knows.Marian Gentile

My experience was better at HPU in comparison to the 2 other universities I have attended– one of which is on Oahu and the other in California. HPU is also ranked fairly good in the regional "Best Western Universities" in the US. Some students may have had bad experience(s) at the school but I think it happens to every school. HPU may not have the best facilities but overall it is a very good university.Aldemar Aglanao

The university loves to cancel financial aid the day classes start without warning to students. They have talked mentally injured students (like a concussion from surfing) into staying in classes when they should have been sent home to recover & removed from classes. I started to see Dr. Brian Kehoe maybe about a month and a half ago. Before I saw him, I knew I had a lot of built in emotions that just talking to my bestfriend about it wasnʻt helping so I decided to seek professional help. Dr. Kehoe is amazing at what he does and he never just speaks to you and leave YOU to make another appointment. He always tries to find a day and time where he can accommodate you so heʻs there every step of the way. Iʻve been thru so much in so little time (Iʻm not old) and I could see changes in my behavior that Dr. Kehoe told me we would work on together. He helped me see my life and the things that I am capable of doing on my own, in a different perspective. I can't tell you enough how awesome Dr. Kehoe, is. I've seen so many psychiatrists and therapists, including several behavioral health people. Dr. Kehoe, is by far THE BEST I've seen and I don't plan to change him out….EVER. I've been seeing him for about 3 years, I think and not once have I ever felt judged by him or felt like he didn't REALLY listen to me. His response to the things that I've opened up to him about shows he truly does listen and also cares about my well being. He's never made me feel uncomfortable, in fact, he's made me feel so comfortable with him, that I willingly chose to open up about things I don't really talk about. I have been searching for a clinic to continue my medication management since moving back to Hawaii in October. All of the clinics I have looked into are either not accepting patients or do not return my phone calls/emails. I called Xplor counseling on Wednesday afternoon and was immediately connected with Randi, the intake coordinator. My experience with Randi was very pleasant, professional and efficient. She does an amazing job! Today (Friday),I was contacted by Kristina, the certified medical assistant, to let me know that my information was processed and sent to Nikima, an APRN. Within a few hours I received a phone call from Nikima and have an appointment scheduled with her for tomorrow! This team knows what they are doing and they do it well. I’m so grateful to have found them. TLDR: Called late afternoon on Wednesday – paperwork and appointment verified on Friday – appointment scheduled on Saturday. My son starting seeing Robert Locklear at Xplor Counseling about a year ago. During a very short time Robert was able to really connect with my son and help him tremendously in dealing with his anxiety. Today my son is a very functional individual eager to take on new challenges. The staff at Xplor was also very helpful in helping me navigate my insurance coverage so that I had a clear understanding about what my financial obligations would be. Never having sought out therapeutic services before, I had no idea what my out-of-pocket expenses would be. The friendly staff at Xplor helped explain that insurance companies set the price and that I would only have to pay the copay after I met my plan deductible.Rob Young

During this pandemic myself and 2 kids have felt like we have lost a lot of our usual senses. After calling a long list of counselors (a lot of whom didn’t even pick up) I found this one business. They were so helpful and fast. They made it so easy to make our appointments and told me that it would be a few days before I heard anything but I was able to have my appointment the same week. They helped me decide who my kids should see and they will have appointments next week. There are a lot of counselors on staff so it seems they can manage any trouble we may be having. Dr. Fukumoto is absolutely the best therapist I have ever found. She is a very insightful, patient-first, and perspective shifting doctor who has helped me go from severely ill — at rock bottom — to handling a manageable problem. The difference her expertise have made in my life is night and day.
