20 Best Psychology Grad Programs In Boston, MA (2022 Updated)

I work here as staff and find the working environment pretty good. My bosses have been good, my coworkers are dependable, and the students seem well behaved and conscientious (most of the time). The new buildings are nice, and the harbor walk is kind of amazing, and the beach is very chill. Good luck finding a place as tranquil anywhere else near the city. There is however one small con and one big con.. the small con is that there aren't that many places to eat and Sodexo runs all the food on campus, and their attempts at ethnic foods are sad. And the aforementioned big con is that there is no less than 3 buildings being built on this tight peninsula right now, and one huge building that was taken down over the year I've been here.. the construction is a mess. Though the new, finished buildings, like the science complex, are great. But if you can take the T somehow, as I do, this place is fantastic.Mikhail M. Nitko

UMASS Boston has a Beautiful campus on the waterfront! It is building two Brand new buildings as student housing with a dinning hall on the first floor, overlooking the Boston harbor with a million dollar view. UMASS Boston has a collaborative research program with Dana Farber Cancer Institute that students can be a part of. I love the new Integrated science center, incubating many New exciting NIH sponsored science research studies. It is an exciting time for UMASS Boston which has a new chancellor with generous scholarship. Chancellor merit scholarship will allow students to get world class education for free.Khuong Nguyen

I am a student here at UMB, the professors are great. The administration is bureaucratic and inefficient and lacks transparency on any basic level. Parking here is dependent upon arrival time. If you get here at 10:20 good luck finding a space in bayside, probably will have to park at the globe. Clinical placement sites for Nursing are good, labs are good, the school is constantly under construction and areas are always being blocked off. Parking will soon cost between 9-15 dollars a day according to emails from the uni. So it’s alright but the university is slowly draining the life of its commuters.Bill Whitney

When a college sends someone to spam your email THREE times about joining seems to me then its not worth singing up for. Got emailed by someone from their staff three times harassing me to join when i had previously shown zero interest but apparently just because she saw my profile on a website. She emails me not once, not twice, but three times begging for a response. While apparently it "may" not be a horrible college i have zero interest in joining and no where near in the area either. I attended when the school was located in Back Bay. We (students and faculty) all made do with the limitations set by the Boston Historical Society in terms of what could be done to our physical plant. That's history. The new 'campus' on Boston Common is amazing. I'm not exaggerating when I say that my experience at Emerson changed my life personally and professionally in the most positive way possible. If you are a person who is self-directed, open-minded with a strong interest in communication sciences Emerson will likely be an excellent fit.Bruce Angeli

As an alum, I had a truly wonderful time studying at this school. I feel as though I got a true, real-life education. Most of the professors also worked in the industries they taught, and could give honest feedback about what it was like. A creative, open learning platform with talented students, helpful staff, and beautiful facilities, I would recommend this school to anyone looking to go into the arts, communications/PR, film, and writing, specifically. The food program makes students sick. They’re placing students in “on-campus hosting” that is half an hour away by train. There isn’t a lot of scholarship money, even to students working while enrolled. The student body diversity is a joke. And worst of all, they will pretend to listen to your complaints but won’t do anything about them, listening to you cry on the phone about how bad your circumstances are without empathy.Olivia Challenger

I have to be honest about this. Good college when it comes to campus design, some Professor's teaching skills, and assistance for school related issues. Although, the school teaches bad ethics. For example, sports lack discipline. They will teach there athletes to run score boards up. Up by 20 in a basketball game with 3mins to go, they will shoot more three point shots than Steve Kerr. The most alarming thing is faculty will participate in Hazing students. I've watch this with my own two eyes. Call them out on it, and they will just deny it, at least my professor did. I am currently a student there, who help form a club, in order to help students get there basic needs to become a successful student. So just remember, good campus design, some Professors have good teaching styles, good for resources, but terrible place to learn good ethics. To me learning good ethics and applying them is one of the most important, or the most important thing to learn as a student. Would not be the first school I would want to send my child to. My alma mater which will always be in my heart till it stop beating (that might sound too dramatic) but hey that’s the truth! I learned a lot, got tons of experiences, got so many American and International friends, exchanged culture and collected precious moments in this place. I really miss the college, my friends, the clubs, the library, single stop, the cafeteria and most importantly I miss my coordinator when I was in a scholarship Program and of course I really miss the professors. I do recommend this college as an affordable and easy starting point but be ready to encounter many hurdles in your way and a lot of incompetent staff. Make sure to double check everything you do here, especially the financial aid part. The professors are nice but it’s on you to actually learn the material, the professors rarely will make sure you learned anything. It’s a 3 star college. It’s unfortunate that I have to write this review but I am in hopes of MCPHS revising their admissions process for the Physician Assistant Program. I know that I was not the only student this year that was invited to interview and then closed out of an interview spot and placed on a waiting list. When I contacted MCPHS they told me that I may not get to interview after all as they had accidentally invited too many people to interview and did not have the resources to open up more interview dates even though acceptances are not on a rolling basis. How does a top tier medical university not have the resources to interview all the students they invited? By choosing to interview solely the people that happened to secure spots first, not only are they limiting the potential of their incoming class and proving that they only care about filling the spots for monetary reasons, but they are limiting the future of numerous successful students who worked hard to get an interview invitation. When I asked Jordan Hunt (admissions counselor) to make sense of this she was unable to provide a competent answer besides that the university messed up and the incoming students are the ones facing the repercussions. I’m not writing this for myself, but for the other students who were too timid to speak up or who had chosen this school as their top choice and then got screwed. I truly feel bad for some of the other incoming students who do not have other options and were relying on MCPHS. I am very disappointed. MCPHS either needs to change their interviewing process to rolling acceptances (interviewing the top tier students first and then going down the line) or they need to use this model but be willing to open up more dates in case of overflow. Side note: They informed me that students on the waiting list could be notified up to a day before an interview that a spot had opened up. Do they not take into consideration that everyone doesn’t live near Boston or works full-time? Extremely dissatisfied with this supposedly “top tier” medical college.Maddy Frank

Hey guys, good for all the students giving great remarks. I don't know if the school has paid you. I must say i was in the nursing program , ( the set that started 2005) the teachers were very bad. Everything was very difficult, out of 50 students that got into the nursing program only 15 students or even less that graduated from the program. Judy Murphy was very racist, no room for improvement. It was a very bad school. I will recommend another school any day any time as matter off fact the school needs to refund money back to students that paid for tuition. All they care about is your money and not the students. It was a very traumatic experience. It was one of the worst decision i have ever made in life to attend that college. I Owe up to 100,000 in debt with no nursing degree to show for. I thank the Almighty God i got my degree from another school with no stress or frustration. Guys open your eyes and look for another school. I just finished my second-year in PharmD program in MCPHS. I’m gonna transfer to Worcester to study the accelerated program. I have had great time in MCPHS so far. All professors are very nice and friendly. I haven’t met any professor who’s not willing to help student wholeheartedly. They always have office hours to answer students’ inquiries and to clarify the lecture in case the students don’t understand. There are absolutely no discrimination in MCPHS. It’s all about respect. Every MCP student is very welcoming so we have a very close-knit community in MCP. The program is well-designed and bearable. Sometime I feel overwhelmed but it’s not impossible to pass as many people say. You just need to put time and effort and you’ll be fine. In short, MCPHS is a great university for those who seriously pursuit a professional career in pharmacy and health sciences.Bill Nguyen

I attended the reunion this weekend as a husband. It was an overall pleasurable experience. The campus itself is very nice and meticulously maintained. Bathroom facilities adequate but nothing extraordinary. The BBQ on Saturday afternoon was nice because it was on campus in a very nice area. Music a bit loud for mid afternoon. Food, not great. I really liked the coozie they gave out. The class party Saturday night for the 10 year peeps was fascinating. It was inside a recreation center which seemed like an odd choice given the plethora of really nice areas on campus. The food selection there I thought was good but many in the group strongly disagreed with that sentiment. The tortellini was on point even tho it seemed to light a bit of a fire under my seat if you catch my drift. I was a little disappointed at all events that I had to pay 7$ for a bud light after already purchasing tickets. I will say we popped over to the 5 year reunion and wow, what a treat that event was. Overall it was a nice weekend, BC seemed to do my wife well as she is very smart. Her friends are also very cool. So I would recommend the college. We may send our kids there if my plan to hit the lottery multiple times comes to fruition. Mods for life.Joseph Moran

I've come across some great professors while being here however, administration has got to be one of the worst I've ever seen (aside from my student advisor Jeff Hogan is great). If you do chose this as your college and decide to study human service or psych stay far away from Steven foster not only is his class unorganized he never graded my final paper and left me to only get credit which dropped my GPA. If you want to enjoy anytime while a student at Cambridge college take all of Robert fladgers classes he's amazing. He makes you look forward to coming to class even when you don't feel like it. I learned a lot from Carole and Jennifer Peppi Carole has accomplished so many great things in the human service field it truley is amazing. Also I enjoyed taking one of my mandatory psych classes with professor Christifaro she was great super fun and made class interesting. I also think they offer a great array of ways to get and finish your education… Online night and weekend classes, most professors are very understanding when you have hit a difficult time in your personal life. When doing your capstone take Dawn zapata she is the sweetest and really puts effort into her students (even though she is not on campus she still makes you feel like you're her priority).Nadiya Alexis

Great teachers with a ton of current long term experience in relevant fields. They lend their knowledge to the courses and show relevance. This is a special place where you have to work hard to get a good grade. No slouching here. I'm lucky to have found it. These professors are out there now in the real world, not sitting in an office somewhere, retired and lecturing straight from a book… Great crew !!!! They are homophobic and Dr. Seth actually reprimanded me for coming out as "gay" during a gay marriage discussion in a Life development class. The work is so easy you can be dead and still get an "A". They look for more excuses to take money from you than the IRS. One Professor Judy Bralove MSW purposely told me she wasn't giving me a recommendation so I could go to another graduate school because she wanted to ruin my plans. I told her she was sick. As a homeless full-time Student, I have to say from the bottom of my heart I do not like this school. There is no support for the homeless student except for "student success" – who in fact told me I smelled. The administration lacks ethics and they will laugh in your face, lie to you, and / or give you false or misleading information. I wish I would have just went to a state school. I found Cambridge College through a program called Year Up Boston. I had earned credits at cambridge college through that program and figured I continue my education at said school. I made the wrong decision. Please, to the community of students who are either going through the same or will be because the numbers are increasing, please look at another option. My program was great but am consistently unimpressed by the school's most senior leadership. Fully confirmed when IN CLASS, we were bombarded and demanded (not asked) to leave our room for a meeting… And I give ALL the credit to our instructor on pushing back. It was ten minutes before our class was scheduled to end AND the meeting was to start. The arrogance was proven right then there. Pure annoyance for having to wait while we finished. I've been a full-time student at BGSP for 2 years and I'm anticipating moving on to the doctoral level very shortly. I moved to Boston specifically for their doctoral degree in psychoanalysis, apparently the only one in the country. After my first visit I was surprised how friendly the faculty and staff were which confirmed my decision to attend. They even assigned me a student mentor who was a huge help in my adjustment to the school and the new area. I have found the classes to be challenging and rewarding in ways I hadn't experienced in my previous graduate school. Of course there have been some frustrations but nothing I hadn't dealt with before. I've found that the education at BGSP is specialized in training you not only to become a professional therapist but also a healthy person, and those match my own personal goals and values.Kurt Fabian

I couldn't have chosen a better college for myself. PMC has one of the greatest Biology programs, and it was the only college that was willing to help me when I needed it. My son was unhappy in the dormitory and moved back home, had to pay in full ($7000) for the 2nd semester even though he had moved out with 3 months notice, even paid for the food he didn't eat. Lesley Office of Residence Life said they would refund if they could fill the bed but I do not believe they made any effort as they charge a nonrefundable late fee if you do not apply for a dorm 4 months in advance. Lesley University takes advantage of 18 year olds signing likely their first contract clearly cares about money more than the welfare of their students! This is the worst school anyone could ever go to unless you are looking for a dead beat college full of ignorant people. The education is absolutely terrible, the dorms are disgusting, the kids look like they should be in fourth grade. If you want a school with crap food, wifi, education, living you come to this school. You're better off doing pre requisites at your local community college. This school has given me a terrible experience and I don't recommend coming here at all. The location is the only positive thing that I have to say. Here is my experience as an undergrad CS major: If you work hard, and legitimately give it 100% of your effort, you will do well. For the most part, teachers want to help their students and will try their best to make you prepared for the industry. Words of wisdom: If possible, try and find a nearby space off-campus living to save $ Always do your research on rate-my-professor before picking classes All nighters may happen… Go to office hours if you need to and use all resources available Going to this school has been one of the most rewarding experiences I've ever had. I originally transferred from a public college in NYC and I can tell you the difference is NIGHT and DAY. I've seen some real unqualified staff that don't care about their students; but that's not the case at BU. In addition, there are so many clubs and activities. I am a current student here. Beware if you are looking to go to this school. The name is good… But let's be honest here, it's not Ivy League. Despite that fact, they make you work like a dog for your mediocre grades. I'm talking 150 page papers… 2hr midterms that end at 9pm and then you start another 2hr midterm the next morning at 9am. It's unnecessarily relentless. They push too hard. Also a lot of professors here are terrible. Use ratemyprofessor or a website like it. If you don't you will truly suffer. Plenty are good… But you have to make sure you get the good ones. That's totally up to you. I'm just surprised that for about $75,000 a year they can't manage better. And yes, that's how much it will cost to attend every year if you don't have financial aid or scholarships…. First off, people who rate this place and have not gone here, discredit the ratings. Don't rate until you have gone here. Its as ridiculous as saying you don't like something you have never tried. Professors are far more concerned with themselves and about complaining how much better they are than BU. 1. BU makes a business of pulling scholarships. (and changing scholarship requirements mid semester) 2. One of the smallest endowments for a school of its size. (school less than 1/4th the size blow it out of the water. 3. Simmons is an absolutely terrible school. Not only are the staff and faculty completely disorganized and incompetent, the school has zero name recognition…even in Boston. I went to Simmons because I received an academic scholarship and thought I was making a wise financial decision by enrolling in their nursing program. Huge mistake. I knew after orientation weekend that I had made a horrible life decision. A majority of the girls in my class were flat-out weird. The professors were awful. In my organic chemistry class, I went to visit the professor for help understanding a particular topic. During our meeting, the only advice he provided me with was to "make flashcards." Gee, thanks, idiot. Thankfully, I transferred to a real school after my freshman year and never looked back. Don't let their faux "women empowerment" mantra sway you into thinking this is a good option for higher education. It's not. The student body, faculty, brand is all below average. There are many excellent schools in Boston and the greater Boston area: Boston College, Boston University, Harvard, MIT…heck, even Northeastern blows Simmons out of the water. I did the online Social Work Master's for only one term. The entire program is very poorly organized. I did not receive a financial aid check until 11 or 12 weeks into the term. The format of the online classes was terrible, class sessions would oftentimes crash or I would lose audio connection. Attempting to speak with financial aid, or advisors was nearly impossible. Even if I had something urgent, the earliest I would receive a reply was a week, sometime I never even received a reply back. If you value your education and an efficient academic process, please do not waste your time, effort, or money on this school. The only positive things I have to say about this school were my interactions with professors, who were very nice and knowledgable and my academic support specialist.
