Do not attend this school. I was a nursing student back in 2012. I had to drop out in 2013 because of rude, selfish, non verbally abusive, catty, and verbally abusive instructors, and I was cheated on one test for 5 correct answers. They randomly throw out 5 questions on the exam to decide on who they will let progress in the nursing program. I had to pay back $2094.00. The teachers are very rude and selfish. All they care about is money. They are intentionally failing the minorities students for money interest. Some of the instructors are verbally abusive, but they are non verbally abusive the most. They do not know how to communicate with people properly. I have been verbally abused and non verbally abused by 4 instructors and had to withdraw and attend another college from here because of this. The nursing program here is not for beginners. You have to be a Certified Nursing Assistant or License Practical Nurse to progress in the nursing program here. They knew about this and kept this a secret as nonverbal and verbal abuse and manipulation to scam people out of there financial aid. I had wasted $23,000 of my financial aid attending this school. I should have attended Coastal Alabama Community College for Practical Nurse and then went back to Meridian Community College for Registered Nurse, but it is all good. I had finished my business degree with accounting minor at Mississippi State University. I had been racially discriminated by 2 instructors and 1 advisor. I had been racially discriminated by some students with one group assignment. They are only passing the majority students who has no nursing degree or background and 1 minority student graduate with or without a nursing degree or background yearly. I had to resubmit my fingerprint with the human resource department at Rush Foundation Hospital. When I was attended the Nursing program back in 2012, they had students from 2010 still in nursing program. This was a red flag, and this was also a red flag when I had to resubmit my fingerprint, when I was cheated out of 5 questions that I had answered correctly on one, and when I was been nonverbally and verbally abused by 2 instructors on my clinical checkoff. I was getting catty behaviors from 2 nursing instructors Mrs. Hill and Mrs. Mary Hanks, 1 psychology instructor Mrs. Bonnie Allen, and 1 accounting instructor Mrs. Sharon Stripe. They are some of the bullies and karmics at University of West Alabama. Mrs. Stripe and Mrs. Allen were the privileged as the majority group while Mrs. Hill and Mrs. Hanks were not privileged as the minority group. I had been experienced this catty behavior as nonverbal and verbal abuse to try control me, change me, and play GOD in my life from students and instructors since my childhood. Mrs. Hill and Mrs. Hanks are fully responsible for failing the nursing students and causing nursing students withdrawals and drop outs because of their verbal and nonverbal abuse. They are a disgrace, a sell out, and a huge embarrassment to us minority women for holding us back in the education, justice, and employment system and our social economic status with their cattiness behavior as nonverbal and verbal abuse. The majority men and women are the blame for dividing us minority men and women for materialistic and money as nonverbal and verbal abuse and manipulation. Mrs. Bonnie Allen who is another nonverbal abuser as withholding information, and Mrs. Sharon Stripe who is another verbal abuser and nonverbal abuser as criticizing, mockery, and ignoring as verbal manipulators are racist, and this institution is racist. Mrs. Hill who is the verbal abuser as criticizing and withholding information as verbal manipulation and Mrs. Mary Hanks who is the nonverbal abuser as withholding information, hiding items, and silent treatment as verbal manipulation are the blame for destroying and corrupting my confidence of becoming a Registered Nurse with their verbal and nonverbal abuse and manipulations as catty behavior. Where do I even begin? This was an OK school to attend and I DO mean OK. The dean was WONDERFUL and became a good friend while I was there. My advisor was amazing and I had some absolutely tops professors. The campus is small and self contained but gorgeous nonetheless. Campus police are all really good guys and there are just really good people here from the friendly caf ladies to admin. THAT SAID, there are a LOT of negatives and I do mean a LOT. The whole campus manages to be uphill in some form or fashion which is really difficult if you end up injured or disabled. There are a lot of professors with really strict attendance policies so you better have your mental and physical health in order or you're going to have a hard time. A lot of people here act like they're Ivy League so the workload is absolutely insane. God rest your soul if you're a music major. The most difficult part of my experience here was the extremely limited accessibility as a disabled individual, most notably the soulless provost. When I had to take part of a semester off due to a medical emergency, my credits weren't applied properly forcing me to take an extra semester to make up for it. We as students were never notified when elevators were out or being maintenanced and I ended up missing classes because I couldn't use the stairs. The professors with the strictest attendance policies only cared that I wasn't in class, not why. While I was there, the college couldn't keep a president longer than two years at a time so it wasn't like we the student body saw any point in getting to know the president. When Krulak was in charge, he knew us all by name and our personal issues. He made sure I never had any accessibility issues. But as soon as he was gone, it was like a totally different school. The semester I was in a wheelchair was a soul crushing hell in and of itself. This also isn't a place you want to go if you're queer. I fought one professor for a whole semester to call me by my name instead of what was on the roster. This led to a LOT of students using the wrong name which led to unspeakable dysphoria. It was a war just to get people to use that name so I just stopped trying when it came to pronouns. The best departments for fellow trans students are anything arts related like English, Studio Art, and theater. I changed my major because the science department was so transphobic. While the theater department is the best for this, it has its own issues. Then, there's the neighborhood. There's a drinking game we like to play called "gunshots or fireworks" if that gives you any idea. It's really close to Eastlake where even cops won't go. My husband was working on a roof in the area and found sniper bullets. The ER five minutes away sees a lot of stabbings and gun wounds but you should be fine if you're white. Just everyone will tell you not to turn right off campus. It's silly because the people there know who's a college kid and they aren't going to mess with any because they don't want that kind of trouble. You're safe on campus but don't park by the sorority houses unless you're cool with your car being broken into. It's a recurring problem. This is probably not a place I'm going to send my kids for a lot of reasons. I did enjoy the classes themselves and frat row knows how to party. The professors were stellar and the campus was gorgeous but none of that totally cancels out all the negative. So as long as you're straight, cisgender, white, mentally healthy, and able bodied you'll be fine!smjaygal

Of course I love it…I am the President of the College. I have read some of the critical comments and question how long ago they were written. BSC is a remarkable college…extremely strong academically, very student oriented, guarantees an internship for each student and, beginning in the junior year, a mentor if desired. We not only focus on developing young men and women mentally, we also focus on leadership and character development. The campus is beautiful, the faculty and staff dedicated to providing the best education and environment possible for the students, and the sense of "family" is ever present. Extracurricular activities are remarkable…great sports, arts, theater, etc. The college sits on a hilltop outside of Birmingham so you get a wonderful campus that is close to a vibrant city. I have just completed my sophomore year as President and am very happy with the direction of the college and the remarkable students who attend…they are the very best thing about BSC. If you are looking for a superb education, the ability to get the job you want upon graduation (or the grad school you want), and a place to make lifelong friends, look no further.Charles Krulak

Our son is in his sophomore year at BSC, and loving every minute. He has been fully engaged by his professors, and has made some meaningful friendships. He started taking Chinese and is thriving. He's in a fraternity and is now on the InterFraternity Council. There are some wonderful campus ministries where he is being fed spiritually. There have been concerns voiced about campus safety: he has never felt unsafe, and trusts the campus security office and the fact that the campus is secured all the way around its perimeter. It truly is an oasis of learning and relationships for our son, and we are very grateful! It should also be noted that the college recently announced the drastic reduction of tuition for students! The campus of this college is attractive and large. The college frequently holds events open to the community, at a cost. There is an annual yard sale that is enormous. They also have theater productions in their playhouse. They frequently invite major political figures to speak, including Barbara Bush, Rudy Gulliani, and one of the Trump kids. They are solidly conservative and Church of Christ. Students of other Christian denominations who attend here will feel pressured to convert to Church of Christ. My son attended the unsigned seniors combine for 25.00. I personally think this school is about getting money with activities like this. The coaches were very unprofessional, seemed more concerned with collecting money. It wasn't what we expected of a combine considering we have attended many in the past. The other children weren't as pleased neither. I would advise anyone who plan on attending to reconsider unless you want to just give money away. I love the great friendly atmosphere. I enjoy most of my classes the teachers have made difficult material easier to understand. I love singing chapel. I'm in a growing band program that supports several on campus events such as Basketball games, Football games, Pep rallies, showcases and concerts. This is the worst school that I've attended. During the first quarter in nursing school, I had a teacher that didn't teach us anything! The whole class thought that she just didn't care because at the end of the school quarter, she left. There were only two great instructors in the whole nursing program and they left. The staff members in the office always said that we were welcomed to come talk to them about anything but we (my cohort) didn't know who to trust. After exams, our grades would get out to other cohorts by an instructor that wasn't even teaching the class. I had a situation that I couldn't help and I was told that I couldn't attend clinical for that day and to write a 10 page paper while several of the others got away with it. When I had a meeting about it, the program director went off subject and started looking at my past grades and said that he was doing that to everyone. That was a lie. He came off very prejudiced to me. I saw another review saying and that he talked down on students and I agree 100%. He's racist. I was told by an instructor to my face that the people in the office were trying to get people like me ("Black") out of the program and I believed her. I also had another problem on an exam about which race of people were more likely to get sickle cell. The instructor said with me being "black", I should have gotten that question correct. It was very offensive. Racist! The staff is very unprofessional and nothing is kept confidential. Teachers were changing answers on exams and they chose who they wanted to let through in the program. Policy requires students to get full clinical hours in order to graduate. False! People graduated without full clinical hours. People even got by with being late to several clinicals. The dean of the school isn't any help. The staff sticks together. They don't care about the students. They only care about the money and sticking together. Tuition is very expensive so I wouldn't waste my time or money. Trust the reviews that you read because I wished I would have. I would have never attended this school. Like I said, they pick and choose who they let through. Everyone is not treated equally. People don't know the half of everything you have to deal with in the nursing program. They (staff) always get defensive when you speak up and try to tell them how you feel about certain things in the program. If you do decide to go to this school, RECORD meetings and everything for proof. It's sad to say that you have to do that, but just giving you all a warning. If there is a problem that needs to be resolved, speak up as a CLASS. Don't leave anyone hanging. People were scared to speak on things because they knew how the staff was and thought that they would do something sneaky. For the love of God, don't come here for nursing. If I wasn't in too deep in this school I would have left already. Tuition increased to $7900 and the sim dolls in the nursing lab haven't been working for a while now, we don't even have the required materials in the lab to properly practice check offs which is why I feel so nervous practicing skills in clinicals. I feel like I don't know anything. For all the money that we are paying it is definetly not worth it. I am so worried that I won't be a proficient nurse when I graduate. I don't feel like I am being taught enough. Like I said, I'm way in too deep to leave at this point. Don't let them fool you, nothing works in the lab. There is a high turnover rate with the staff so it seems as if the academic advisors and teachers are always changing. Furthermore, financial aide staff is not helpful. They are not knowledgeable about any topics. The supervisor is rude and only has one person working under her who doesn't know much. The classes are good though and aren't too big which allows for more one on one instruction. If they had better staff working in Financial aide then I would give them 4 stars.Ashlee Billups

This was the most frustrating, unprofessional experience I’ve had trying to make an appointment anywhere. The first person I spoke to I could barely understand and there was a lot of confusion. I found out later there was a lot of important information I missed. I was scheduled with Savannah Donahoe for premarital counseling. I received a text a few days later that my appointment time had been successfully changed. I called and asked why it was changed. They said it was cancelled by my counselor and they sent a message for her to reach out to me. Then a few days later I received a text that my counseling session had been cancelled. It would have been nice to receive a phone call or explanation, offering an option to reschedule. I understand emergencies happen, but we had never even been here before and this made a horrible first impression. We are going to seek counseling elsewhere.Lauren Vaughan

I was so excited to be able to watch "the little band that could" – I'm so proud that the students and the president of the college stood up to the "haters" and showed the determination to persevere even though it wasn't the "popular" thing to do. Please, if you are not having a high risk pregnancy, DO NOT HAVE YOUR BABY HERE! I feel like if I did not leave when I did, I would be dead. I was admitted with pre-eclampsia. Now, my nurses on the maternity unit were good and so were the nurses on the neonatal unit. My baby is biracial, and one of the neonatal nurses did not believe that my son was my son. She said are you sure you are here for that baby…. But that's another story. While on the maternity unit, a patient care tech charted my blood pressure as normal and did not actually check my blood pressure. SHE FALSIFIED MY BLOOD PRESSURE! DO YOU KNOW HOW DANGEROUS THAT IS ON A PRE-ECLAMPSIA PATIENT!!! I emailed Terri Poe, the chief nursing officer, and the nurse manager for that unit. No one EVER called me to follow up with me. Went there for the first time ever on 1/25/21. I babysit 3 boys 5, 3 & 1yr old brothers. The youngest ones both have medical issues & I went with their mom to take them for a checkup. When I say that I've never seen a more caring staff, and I mean from the cafeteria workers to desk clerks to Dr's….I mean it! The nurses & physicians (sincerely) pay attention to *every word you say to them & every question you ask! It's extremely apparent how much they care about their patients and that's hard to find anywhere!!! I wish I could give a -100 star rating. This has been the worst college (if that’s what you want to call it) that I’ve ever attended. There are a million things that I can review about but I’ll limit that to my top issues I’ve had personally. 1. ADMINISTRATION. The administration here are a joke and are the most unprofessional people I have ever dealt with. I mean some have the nastiest attitudes on and off the phone, are nonchalant about student issues, don’t return calls or emails…just don’t care. The business office just puts anyone in there to handle student business (ie. Lowerclassmen who have the slightest clue on how to conduct business). The admissions office is a joke. I’ve tried to have a conversation with a lady at the front desk, she didn’t even have the decency to stop smacking and have a conversation about important paperwork with me. Don’t try to call the business or admissions office after classes have ended to talk about transcript requests etc …they wont answer. As well as, you need to ‘follow up’ with them when they say they will do something for you regarding transcript requests to be sent off because they won’t send them unless you hassle them. 2. COLLEGE GROUNDS. The college is old, I get that but the buildings are literally falling apart. The classrooms have holes in the ceilings, rainwater that comes through, desks that barely hold themselves together, out of date lab equipment (60% of that which doesn’t work), mold, mildew & let’s not forget what ever critters decide to come visit you that day. The dorms need serious improvement too. But I guess the faculty and staff here are more worried about driving Mercedes, BMW’s and Camero’s rather than providing a quality education to their students. 3. MONEY! I hope you are able to pay your student bill in the exact amount that your statement says, because if you are looking for a refund check…you might not get it! I can’t count how many stories I’ve heard about them stealing money, saying it went to ‘other fees’ than giving it back. Also, if you decide to go part time, be prepared for 3-5 people quoting you different prices for how much a credit hour costs because obviously nobody knows much about prices. 4. FOOD. One cafeteria, if you don’t like the choices…oh well! The food reminds you of when you were in elementary school lunch lines..bland and nasty most of the time. Also, they close at 6:30 so I hope you have food in your rooms! 5. EDUCATION. This is the saddest part. They dumb down the education so bad, using out of date resources. Most days there was no point of even going to classes because of how bad the teaching is there. Most of the professors don’t care if you learn or not as long as they get paid. Most lectures come straight from the books and their whole process of education is about 20 years behind. If you want quality education at a great price in Tuscaloosa choose Shelton or Alabama! Shelton is amazing if you don’t want to spend the high prices at Alabama and you are valued there as well! It’s just a matter of time before this ‘college’ closes for good.Tay Carter

For the most part the classes aren't too hard. There are a few that require many hours of studying, but even these aren't too difficult. However, the professors are another story. As a biology major, I found that most of the professor (the ones I've had the misfortune of encountering) are either incompetent, grumpy, inconsiderate, or a mix of it all! Although there are some, it wasn't too often I came across a professor who treated students respectfully and as adults. Outside of class life, there isn't much to do. Parties are thrown by the greek/nongreek organizations occasionally, but other than that the "night life" is pretty dull. The co-ed visitation is for Wynn/ Hay Hall residents only and is limited to strict terms and conditions. The dorms are old and falling apart, especially King Hall. The college's website is often down, which at times is very inconvenient. The cafeteria basically rotates the same 7 meals. Thursday and Friday during are the best days to go, which are "chicken day" and "fish day" respectively. The cafeteria is the only eating spot on campus and it closes at 6:30. Everything else (stadium, hay center, wynn center, etc.) usually closes around 9 or 10. I will not even get started on all the problems with dealing with financial aid. I have a full scholarship and still have problems with financial aid messing up my paperwork. If you do decide to come here please beware, and remember you've been warned!Kee See

Hello everyone my name is Lavarcus William and I used to attend Alabama clinical School it is a great place to learn and grow from I learned so much there and I did not realize how much I missed it until I left the staff that was there when I was there was very excellent towards me and others the food was good and I love the rules that they had I love the group that I was in and I also miss my therapist that I used to have there I loved her like she was a mother to me and I just hate the way things went down the way she had to leave I will not mention her name but I love her so much she was the best therapist to me out of all people I could talk to her and she can understand me more than anyone can I loved activities that they had there for everyone and I love the classes that we went to I wish that I could visit them one day until everyone that's there how much fun I had when I was there and how much I learned from everyone that was there the staff that I had I love them like they were my family I thought I had lost everything when I went there but as I got used to it I did not want to leave because I was learning so much and I hope that someday I will be allowed to come back and visit and tell everyone how much I love that place I think about it all the time and I just get so many memories of all the fun things and activities that we all share and I do believe that my name is still on the wall in the art room so if I get the chance again I just wish that I could visit them one more time PS I Love You Alabama clinical School you guys was the best thing that ever happened to me💖💖Lavarcus Williams

So I was a client there at acs and when I got out I was a mess not going to lie but I put what I was told to use and I got my life back on track I got my own apartment I finish school I’m November I am going to be a police officer for Florida and I have a kid now and I’m just constantly doing the best I can to be the best I can be and I owe it all to acs to the staff that was there when I was there I couldn’t have done without the tools you gave me to succeed in life I am not a statistic of life I will never be a statistic of life and I had to want myself to do better to be better or for that I better and I will continue to be better thanks for everything much love antonio wardAntonio Ward

I was a resident back in 2002-2003 and I must say it gave me a different look on life. Things in my past wasn’t the best but the staff and my group leader Z. Johnson was amazing. Taught me so much and even checked on me after I left in early 2003. Favorite staff members of all time was Darrell & Michael Ravizee. Treated everybody kind and I enjoyed hearing Cold Red D-Wing (I watched so many people get put through walls based on moving doing restraints. I even had to call a Code Blue over the intercom before. Thanks for opening my eyes to life and I highly recommend ACS and the amazing staff I had over 18 years ago ❤️❤️❤️James Williams

I really wanted to like Montevallo, really I did, but it’s safe to say that I pretty horrible experience. In early 2020, me and mother shadowed the school and we both really liked it! At the time the school seemed lively, fun and everyone looked happy, but when the time came for me to go, it was an entirely different experience. I came in as an out-of-town transfer student that lived on campus and when I went, it was totally different experience. Everyone in the school seemed cold and unfriendly and with socially distancing and the mask mandate, it was nearly impossible to socialize. The campus seemed barren and desolate. My experience was a very lonely one and it effected me mentally. I had to end up dropping out because to it. I know there’s a pandemic going on, but you can’t just isolate kids and expect them to be okay with that.Abigail Jones

Faculty and administrators need to work harder to ensure students can complete their degree program within four years. “Just take an extra semester” should not be the standard answer from faculty advisors every time there is a scheduling conflict (which is often!). The price you pay (literally!) for attending a small, cash-strapped school reliant almost entirely on tuition for funding, with limited course options.Chris Rein

Wonderful small town university. Of course it is on the outskirts of Birmingham so it's not really a"small town" university. Anyway it's still an excellent school. I attended a musical production put on by the school drama department. It was an excellent show done in their newly renovated performing arts center. A top notch production.Bill Tiemann

A ton of people will have different opinions on this particular university, but I'm going to speak from a student's perspective. That being said…. I LOATHE UAH! I have spent five years at the university with little support from the faculty or my peers. I am only half through my major. The professors seem to only be concerned about research and the money coming into the school. I have been talked down to and yelled at by them with no corrective action ever being taken. The overall atmosphere becomes bland with time. Education (in the old sense of the word) is meant to be an enlightening experience. I still haven't had that moment yet at the university. The way UAH is structured does not promote education, yet instead aids those who are gifted enough to contribute to the school. In other words, they pull in the most brilliant minds and discard the rest, but that is just my experience.Bruce Williams (24 Canvases)

First semester and loving it! Very clean, love the green space, too. Bring your inner geek and tech nerdiness! They have a lot of great clubs geared for nearly everyone, very nice advisers and instructors, and have a diverse group of students to meet and work with. I am a transfer student from a community college and really benefited from the transition course they offered. It definitely helped to have class with fellow transfers and get comfortable with this very big campus. Looking forward to the hockey season as well, Go Chargers! 🙂Ashlee Jana

Parking is garbage. They give us no room, as commuters, to park. Then they give us tickets for parking "out of zone". Just another way this place is grabbing for money. I pay thousands of dollars to go here, you think they'd actually give us some priority and give us room to leave our cars. What am I supposed to do with a 3 ton vehicle? We need room that they won't give us, and then punish us for their incompetence. The professors are fine but those who are in the lead of this place are more useless than a Gender Studies degree.Caleb Brand
