10 Best Msw Programs In New York, NY (2022 Updated)

Studying a dual bachelor's (and my first master's degree) in good part at the City College of New York's Division of Interdisciplinary Studies, at the Center for Worker Education, was one of the most fulfilling experiences that I have ever had. But it was only a confluence of unique factors at the CWE that made this possible for me so shortly after I arrived in the U.S. They have a compact yet superb interdisciplinary team of scholars that promotes the kind of close interaction that one gets these days with luck in postgraduate studies. And the Center for Worker Education's gorgeous and exceptional location in Manhattan's Financial District made it both an oasis of easy access from anywhere in the city (and from New Jersey, where I used to work then) and inviting for relaxing walks after classes. Besides, their four Semester Credit Hours–rather than the usual three SCH that is standard in most universities–allowed me to complete my dual B.A. in just three years, studying a good 25% less courses than it would have taken anywhere else. On top of that, I studied at a pace of just two evenings per week, and Saturdays only a few semesters. Add CUNY's exceptional affordability, some truly fantastic professors, and the CWE's unique diversity and you will get a combination of pluses hard to beat! This is City College's downtown, worker program, and it was an excellent fit for me. The facilities were clean and new, the registration was seamless and efficient (one of the best reasons to come here, and definitely one of mine), the area is great (not too busy like where some other CUNY schools are located), and all of the students are of a more "mature" age bracket (some people preferred this). Some of the professors were eccentric, lol, but good overall. Caution, like most new Liberal Arts programs like the one available here (Nyack one block over, College of New Rochelle in Harlem & South Bronx, etc.) these BA degrees are typically for people who are already working and who just need a general bachelors degree to move up at their job. This program in particular was established for those who worked in the public sector (mostly for the city, like in the building that Nyack is in) with courses in public admin, unions & negotiations, etc. (There's a master's program in the same field with CUNY School of Professional Studies in midtown). For some, if you need a bachelors to earn a little more money getting office jobs that require a BA, this is a great route too. It's also great if you want to attend graduate school. Some professors, particularly one in social work, will get you recommendations to get you into Hunter's MSW program. For all these reasons stated above, I recommend this program.Sha Ro

As a full-time employee and single mother the course syllabus enabled me to complete the credits I needed to obtain my undergraduate degree. Several years later I wanted to obtain a Masters Degree in a topic that interested me. I enrolled in the MA Study of the Americas program and I must say I was not disappointed. Everything I remembered about the CWE experience remained true. The professors are knowledgeable, passionate about their course of study and committed to each student that enrolls in the program. I have been and will always be an advocate of CWE. Polytechnic has been rated in the top 10 of the world rankings for income after graduation for the last 5 years. After attending this University, I can see why. The opportunities have been enormous since graduation and I have this school and hardwork to thank. The curriculum is second to none but more importantly, NYU-Poly offers lots of hands on experience. I had the opportunity to work with a dozen different companies that were struggling to make it in this bad economy and apply the tools I learned in class to turn them around. I was even offered a full time position with one of them within one week of working with them. Professor Greenstein and Albano are two of the best professors I have ever had. The social life is what you make of it! This is an ENGINEERING SCHOOL, so of course, you wont have the partying an art or business school may have. However, you are in the middle of the best city on earth! If you cant have fun and have a good social life in New York, its you that is the problem, not the school! Overall, I would recommend NYU-Poly to anybody that wants to better themselves if they dont mind a lot of hard work! I graduated Poly in 1983, pinned on 2nd Lieutenant bars the next day, and had a successful 22-year career as an Army Engineer officer, followed by a Federal Agent career at present. Poly was VERY DEMANDING–and most other life pursuits were undaunting given the academic rigor and resulting intellectual energy. I usually come here to get breakfast and/or coffee which is actually Starbucks branded as Seattle's best (and much cheaper). The breakfast omelettes are quite expensive now they have changed the prices but the sandwiches are still decent. The prices otherwise are affordable and there's a large selection of food types. They have their own hand rolled sushi on display everyday as well as other foods.Johnny M

Admissions and Student Services are possibly the worst at any Social Work School per students who applied, or went to other Social Work Schools prior. It's a shame because most of the professors and student cohort are top notch. It becomes a true Social Work experience learning how to evaluate, assess, and navigate such poorly ran offices. Expect high turnover and new faces that quickly learn to not be helpful.andrew nueces

Silver provides a rich learning environment through talented, experienced faculty, fruitful internships and several programs which provide numerous pathways to obtaining a MSW degree. Building is really old. Also, the elevators take forever to get to the bottom, but it has a lot of advisers, so I guess I have to review it well. The advisers are really good. The building not so much.John Kim

The MSW program here is a complete joke and does nothing to prepare students for any kind of clinical social work. Some of my peers have essentially failed the class, doing maybe half the assignments, but still get “passing” grades crying to the admission. Speaking of the administration, they only care about taking your money, they seem to have zero interest in producing competent social workers. If you ever see a therapist that went to Fordham, run away. If you want to actually learn social work, look elsewhere.Danny Erickson
