20 Best Summer Programs In Richmond, VA (2022 Updated)

It's a good college at a fair location. Keep in mind that this is a community college and not a four year college. It isn't going to carry the same weight as a true four year college, both with the degrees that it provides and the teaching level administered. The college is clean enough and they are doing some work to being up some of the buildings more to standard. The Midlothian campus is better, but this one presents a prime location being directly off the highway. They have several computer labs and every teacher I've had has been fair and engaged with students to an acceptable degree (academically). The VA expert nice woman who knows her job well. As a veteran she helped me and my roommate out greatly with setting up the GI Bill and she did all our paperwork quickly and efficiently.Steven N

They have changed from when I first graduated high school but the headaches are still there. Advisors sometimes are confused themselves and aren't of much help. Financial aid is best to deal with in person. Campus is closed together and easy to walk around. Professors are some good and some not. Bathrooms are always clean and that's a good thing. There's a lack of information for clubs, programs and such. They have a catalog of jobs and careers but they don't offer half the classes. Classes fill in quickly and sometimes you can't find one of the ones you need for your program. I graduated and not my classes were online since some of the students coming here are either really old or really young and immature.Cya Vsqz

Had the name John Tyler Community College for decades, No one cared about the name.. Bright Point sounds like and is some off the wall name and school advertised in on late night commercial What a shame for a school to cave to a social trend…. I wont be donating any time or money. BSH did more for me than I could ever repay. The teachers, staff and parents truly care about the individual as if you were a part of their family. This college style campus provides top level education at the fraction of the price compared to Collegiate or St. Chris. BSH and it small class room sizes allowed to me flourish achieving things I never thought possible. Without BSH I would have never chosen to attend VMI or commission as an Officer in the United States Air Force. We have two boys that are in their first year of attending BSH. Our experience has been nothing but wonderful. The preschool and kindegarten teachers are everything we had hoped for and more. Kind, loving, and motivating! Their confidence is soaring, they are excited to go to school, and our 5 year old is reading! Parent involvement is encouraged on a number of levels here and there are so many wonderful opportunities to volunteer and participate in school activities and events. Our daughter came to St. Catherine’s in the 8th grade, and her experience has been nothing short of fantastic. The learning environment is so welcoming and inclusive. The consistent message from faculty is “thank you for trusting us with your child’s education- we are so glad that you are here.” This positive energy sets the tone for our entire experience. Our daughter has always been a hardworking student. But the incredible depth of experiences and resources offered, combined with the empowering atmosphere of the school, are clearly promoting leadership qualities. I have two daughters at St. Catherine's, one in 1st grade and one in 3rd grade. I can honestly say they LOVE going to school. They get up literally every morning excited about school and they both love their teachers. That school has girls figured out, whether they are doing some spectacular dance performance or a science experiment with gummy worms and glow bracelets (which my daughter has done both). The school cultivates a safe learning environment without distractions. The chapel is centering and teaches them about giving back, kindness, respect and other attributes we want our children to obtain. When we moved here five years ago, as a mother, one of my biggest anxieties was finding the right school for my children. I can without a moment's hesitation say that St. Catherine's and St. Christopher's were the best decisions we made when we moved here. Nice museum and a great place to learn about Richmond and it's history. I went in June and the temp display was called 'Voices of Richmond an Epidemic' and focused on stories of the Aids epidemic back in the 190's and 90's. I'm not one that is often moved to tears but found myself doing exactly that as I listened and walked around the exhibits. My personal favorite exhibit was old Chief Smokum who stood in Richmond for many years. I happened to visit on a Wednesday and was treated to lunch in the gardens listening to a concert. Well worth a visit and was nice to sit somewhere and just relax after a few days of travel.Jenne Holmes

Wonderful courtyard for a work day lunch. Update: Had a chance to catch a tour of Wickham House and The Valentine's Monumental Power Play Tour. Amazing curator-led tour through power elements that allowed the perpetuation of the Lost Cause myth. Well done! The open house was well planned & impressive. While munching on vegetable pizza or cotton candy or a slurpee, the members & staff shared about the congregation, their Rabbi, & the renovations to their campus & buildings. The tour began in the lobby & went to Cantor Beck-Berman on the music program, then Social Justice & the Brotherhood/Sisterhood, the Religious School, gorgeous sanctuary & meeting Rabbi Nagel. What a fun evening for the youth making cotton candy & slurpees, tattoos & nostalgic popcorn. David & David made enthusiastic ambassadors for Beth Ahabah & shared on music. Many have joined & converted, are in mixed families, attend monthly but living out of town with a local home too, & as visitor. The Social Justice committee was impressive & representatives were available at each station on the tour. The pipe organ is phenomenal in a breathtaking sanctuary. 1.4 million is a modest amount to put it back into service. Yes, organs break. The downside, the high road must always be taken or authenticity fails. Gossip is poor mortar for anything great. It crumbles. Inclusive & welcoming must include rabbi & Cantor.Portnoy

This was a beautiful park that is free and open to the public. Certain things do cost money on a per diem basis but to explore the park, walk through the various gardens, listen to music, or participate in the activities hosted by the park are all free. The park is quite large so make sure you bring comfortable clothes, shoes, and water. There were several ideal places for an intimate or small family picnic too. Parking was free where we were, but limited so street parking may be needed. I did not see anyone on bikes or scooters so I am not sure if these things are prohibited or not.Trent

Wow, such a nice day outing. This botanical garden is free to enter, has farm animals, several gardens, and much more. Saw ton of people taking wedding/senior pictures and having picnics. We arrived at 3pm on a Friday and the parking lot was packed but we were able to find the last one. I do believe there is street parking though. There are also public restrooms here. It's a hugh place so although there were a lot of people, we walked around freely without feeling crowded. If you enjoy botanical gardens, you'll be glad you check out this place.Around the World

Definitely a favorite in Richmond. Maymont from its ample acreage, historic house, discovery center, zoo, and gardens is not to be missed. Perfect place for a picnic, walk, to read, think, or just be! Richmond has a lot of great parks but this ranks right up there. Pretty standard contemporary art museum for a college, but there is nothing special here. There are only four exhibits which is a little disappointing, but there are a few positives. There is FREE coffee, it is really open and modern, the staff is friendly, and it’s free. I wouldn’t recommend going out of your way to see this place or to drive more than 20 minutes, but if you live in the city, it’s worth checking off. Probably wouldn’t go back because of how small it is, but it wasn’t terrible. There were a few cool art pieces though. Clean bathrooms as well. Note: The elevator is SO SLOW, but it’s a really neat one! I would 100% suggest using it. Visited on

Definitely an interesting place to say the least, there are three floors of exhibits all of which were totally different than the last. A lot of the pieces are from artists from all around the work with different cultures and views. Some of the exhibits made me feel uncomfortable but that’s the whole point, these pieces are supposed to bring up different emotions inside you. I would definitely try and go to the museum first before you bring any children, they are allowed but there is a warning for some exhibits having violent, sexual, and historically racial conversation pieces. I did enjoy it overall and was able to talk to one of the women helping out with the 9/11 exhibit… give it a try if your at all interested in contemporary art!Nathan Ramirez

I was incredibly excited to visit the Institute for Contemporary Art. I heard so much about it before visiting Richard for the first time, and the incredible installations they feature. It was to my great surprise my trip fell on a weekend of an opening. My night was topped off by meeting intriguing Artist, Lecturers and Public Figures. The installations and films were brilliant! A jewel in Richmond! These gardens are absolutely gorgeous! Well tended and landscaped. We only stayed for 1.5 hours and saw a mere fraction of the place. Admission was free because of our membership at Norfolk Botanical Gardens. Very grateful for that. Their butterfly house is climate controlled and the wide variety of butterflies is amazing. One butterfly took a liking to my blouse. 🦋 The conservatory building had stunning orchids and tropical plants. The stone rose arbors are loaded with blooms. And offer shade if one needs it. Actually there are many benches to rest in the shade throughout the garden. There is a large area with carnivorous plants whose blooms resemble orchids. A turtle was sunning himself. Blue gil fish swim in the many ponds. Highly recommend this place to young and old alike. Looking forward to a much longer future visit.Susan Moore

Amazing experience!! Loved it…all of it. Went on a Saturday afternoon. Went to see the Orchid Show, which was fabulous. It was a wee bit crowded inside the conservatory but it was worth it. The orchid displays were worth the trip. It's late winter but the gardens were beginning to show color. The gardens have really nice walkways. Nothing strenuous. You can even walk on the grass! Children were rolling down the hills. This is a great place for kids. I look forward to my next visit in April; early Spring…everything should be in bloom or almost. Today on our visit the gardens were pretty empty. There were quite a bit of things in bloom and it was a nice peaceful walk around the grounds. The grounds overall were extremely clean and well taken care of. The staff that we had interactions with were extremely nice and able to answer any questions we had. This was a really cool place to get to walk around and look at all the plants. All of the plants were labeled as well, incase you wanted to know what something was.Aaron Jerkins

This is a wonderfully beautiful, historical and peaceful place to visit. If you didn't know, St. John's is where Patrick Henry gave his "Give me liberty or give me death" speech to the Second Virginia Convention. The memorial to George Wythe, preeminent legal mind in 1700's and first professor of law at William & Mary – Tutor and mentor to Thomas Jefferson, Justice John Marshall, Henry Clay, James Madison among others is well marked. And if you look you'll find the grave site of Edgar Allan Poe's mother. The gift shop does have the Parish book behind the desk and provides some interesting insights over the centuries.Greg Knapp

Ok people of Richmond…support your animals and wildlife! If I could give it more stars, I would. I will compare this zoo with the zoo in St. Louis (where I'm from and I think its one of the best zoos in the US). So this Metro Richmond zoo is probably one of the best for the sheer fact you can get so close, touch, and feed some of the animals (i.e. kangaroos and giraffes). They make sure it's safe for you and the animals as there are plenty of signs about how to engage with the animals and sanitizing stations around. They also have a skylift so you go can see the animals from up above and its safe. Also the park rangers are always around and more than happy to talk and answer questions about the animals (they seem to job, which is a good sign). I like hands on learning aspect of this zoo. Compared to the zoo in St.Louis its more pricey as its privately owned and the grounds are not as well managed. However, the Metro zoo feels more accessible and connected and its better for learning. I actually donated to the zoo because I liked the staff and the interaction with the animals. My only complaint is I wish the zoo looked more manicured and was free so I could frequent the grounds more often. I think the city of Richmond or VA government should pay for the Zoo's upkeep so it is accessible and free to the entire public and to help support the animal. However I will probably get a year membership because I like the zoo that much. Not sure why Richmond doesn't pay for it and make it free as its a great learning experience for adults and children. I think they will get more foot traffic, more community involvement and more donations that way but in the interim I will continue to support the animals and zoo. Visited on

Cute little zoo to visit with the family. A little bit of everything , animal's, snacks ,ice cream , train ride and so much more. The bird feeding was our highlight my boy's could stay in there forever . I would have given it 5 stars but for me I had a bit of a drive to get there . The only other sad part was the giraffe feeding. It would have been such a great experience to be able to feed them. They were NOT interested in the feed at all. I know that it's an animal and that's out of anyone's control when it eats just had high hopes we could experience that. However it's a cute zoo for the whole family . Definitely recommend going . Came to VA from IN to visit family, and we drove a little over an hour to Richmond zoo with our daughters! We had such a blast, children AND us adults! I loved feeding the giraffes, the lift ride, the animals, and most of all….I had a BLAST getting to take our girls into the bird enclosure, and have those beautiful, sweet birds landing on our hands, arms, my HEAD 😂❤️…it was an absolute amazing experience! I can't wait until our next VA trip, because we will def be coming back to Richmond zoo! This school truly provides the best private college preparatory education in the Richmond area. We have had the privilege of sending our son since his junior kindergarten year to the school and we receive daily ah-ha moments! My husband attended Saint Christopher's for high school and fell in love with the school as well as its teachers and staff. When we had our son we began our journey from Orlando, Florida area back to Richmond just so our son could attend Saint Christopher's Boys School. This decision has never once been regretted, any and all sacrifices we have made or will make in order to give our son an education like he is receiving at Saint Christopher's is well worth it. REVISED: These guys really care about their clients! The manager (who is terrific!) noticed my concerns and took time to talk thru/address them. So we're hoping some of our frustrations are coming to an end as they open more classes and hire more staff. As I said in my previous review – my daughter loves this place and we have s lot of fun every time we go!! PREVIOUS REVIEW: So, this is a tough review since my daughter and I love this place and we've been members for over a year. I would definitely recommend taking your small child here to see if they like it – but there are some drawbacks. On the plus side, the classes are fun and the staff is very friendly! On the minus side, the membership classes are use them or lose them so if something comes up (or your child gets sick) you can't roll over your extra classes to the following month. Also, there's not a great selection of times for toddler classes and the ones that are convenient fill up quickly so you can't always get in. What we liked: -Good size small group -Structured but not micromanaged/forced -Good pace for age group (around 2 years) -Variety, different activities -Climate-controlled, nice change of pace/break from humid heat Why we probably will NOT become members: -monthly membership costs more than our all-inclusive membership for family of 6 at the state-of-the-art gym nearby AND -Rompn’Roll charges a huge additional fee for parents to drop kids off (only during certain events/times) when my regular gym does not charge anything additional to watch kids while I work out (or while Dad works out and Mom runs errands) and with a far greater range of available times to do so. We MIGHT do occasional class here and there (I think $25 for a class) or consider birthday party there in future (because good for age group….will depend on packages/costs). Both of my children have taken classes here, I also bring along the little girl that I babysit. We take 2-3 classes a week and occasionally attend open playtime. Every week there is a different theme, so the kids seem to be interested in every class that we take. My older daughter has attended their winter camp and kids night out, she had a blast at both. My daughter and I attended for the first time for a paint pouring class. The staff was very kind, personable, professional, and welcoming. They were extremely helpful. I went to AR Workshop with 2 friends to celebrate our 50th birthdays. We made these adorable wooden trays with vintage handles that we will keep forever. We took our entire 22 person team to AR Workshop for a team builder and everyone agreed it was the best one ever! Rebecca and her team are the best and made the entire process amazing. This place has it all. Cute little shop? Check. Delicious, and possibly life changing ( I’m looking at you Peach Lemonade Lotus) drinks and snacks? Oh heck yes. Classes that encompass all ranges of art? You betcha. This is only half of it too! I don’t have kids, but I can only imagine the amazing time they would have at the camps and the play spaces are a thing of dreams. If I didn’t think my fat self would get stuck, I might risk ire just so I could play in there, seriously. The staff is great, always so friendly and instructors are amazingly talented. They do a few craft fairs a year and have some art shows inside to. These fairs though… oh man. Amazing artists but also booths that the kids can showcase and sell things they have made. We really enjoyed our daughter's glow party here! It was nice to have everything set up for us and to not really have to do any clean up, and the employees who assisted us were very sweet. They set up the snacks and drinks I brought in and also cut the cake for us. I found out that when you order pizza on a Sunday through Sergio's, it can show up a little late because Sergio's doesn't open until 11 a.m., so our party did run a little over, but we were not charged for that. It was a little disappointing that the "glow shirts" that we made did not glow in the dark, at all. It looked like regular marker when the blacklights were on. But other than that, the party was great!C S

Brought my son to open play, under the impression that the playroom was actually monitored to ensure there was a 12 child limit. I walked in the room to 25+ toddlers, along with 25+ parents all huddled towards the door. It was a chaotic mess, and very clearly a COVID hotspot, with everyone stuffed into a small room with one entrance and no windows. We decided to leave after staying about 5 minutes. There has to be someone to monitor this room, it is an accident (and lawsuit) waiting to happen. The rest of the cafe looked nice, however based on how poorly this was toddler room was run, we will not be back.Chris McDonald

I’ve known of YWAM Richmond for years, but as I’ve gotten to know the base more, I’ve discovered something truly special. The team of folks are genuine, and are investing their lives into serving their community and beyond. The base itself is a beautiful location, set up on a hill in Fulton overlooking the valley between it and Church Hill, creating a space to rest and connect with God. This place is amazing. We went to a birthday party here and it was so easy, I didn’t have to constantly tell my son not to do or touch something. The staff were kind and fun. honestly, this is one of the WORST martial arts places ive ever went to. especially their summer camp. The respect for the children is so bad. Making sure that they students are always safe and happy is DEFINETLY not their top priority. When i still went to martial arts, there were constant fights, and the masters and staff never actually did anything about it. The worst punishment they ever got was sent to the office. They also have a contract that they won't let you out of. Master hubly never actually took time to make sure the kids were happy. He would always stay couped up in his office and would only come out whenever a parent came. Whenever he did come out to "see and pay attenetion" to the children, he would always be trying to touch us and give us hugs and all kind of weird stuff. In conclusion, i do not recommennd. I have been a student of martial arts for more than 20 years and am a certified instructor in more than one art. I took my 2 young children here 5 years ago, and was impressed by the teaching acumen and the firm but fair attitude of Master Hubley and his cadre of instructors. While it may not be the most “martial” of martial arts schools, the children learn discipline, manners, self-respect, leadership, physical fitness, teamwork and myriad values that aid them them in achieving higher plateaus in their journey of life. Master Hubley is a true master in his mannerisms with children and his martial arts acumen. I am proud to send my children here and will continue to do so because it has been such a positive influence on their lives (self confidence, fitness and overall well being). My daughter started with Martial Arts World of West End at the Three Chopt location in 2008. Soon after my oldest daughter and I joined her on the mat. After a few years at that location, we moved to the Glen Eagles Shopping Center. Windows and sun were a common thread that accompanied our classes. The facility is clean and inviting. In the past 2 years, they have acquired the facility next door and made a bigger room for the A+ students plus a smaller training room. All of this space is ready to have YOU join our classes. The front desk staff members are extremely helpful answering any questions that come up. The instructors are great and keep the classes different and engaging. The A+ staff is great with the kids. Come join us on the mat. You can take 5 weeks of unlimited classes for $11.00! Where else can you get that?Tammy Courtney

I was more than happy with the staff and the manager also pizza was great too.we had kids with Autism, didn't rent the room but manager let us use the room so it won't be so overwhelming for the kids plus let us come in 11am instead of 12am to accommodate Sensory issues and kids could have a there own time. I should have asked manager name. I felt she was very personable ,wanted to do everything she can to let ours kids have wonderful time. And they did. They loved every piece of their time. The buying tickets online and checking in process is streamlined and very easy! We visited Launch last year for my son’s birthday, and had a good experience. So we decided to come back to Launch again for another birthday. The staff is pleasant and efficient. The bathrooms were cleaned as well as the sitting area. I enjoy how close this location is to where we live and the pricing is reasonable. Also, kudos to the gentlemen working the front desk when we arrived yesterday at 12pm. He was very friendly. We had my son's 7th birthday party with a few of his buddies. All the employees that we had interactions with were very polite and helpful. The place was so clean and not over crowed. This was all seven friends & parents first time coming here and everyone commented on how nice and open, clean, well run, and well staffed it was.
