20 Best Summer Programs In Omaha, NE (2022 Updated)

I am in the MPA program. While the program is very hard, but yet rewarding, overall, UNO could use some restructuring of their programs and the professors who teach them. There should not be that much variance/ disunity in a professor’s mode of instruction/ lectures and expectations compared to the students homework/ assignments. I know that I am not the only student who felt/ feels this way about some of the professors teaching styles. Some students have already reached out voicing their concerns some students have not because they just want to finish their programs and be done. I feel like students were misled about who would be supervising their projects for spring 2019. Students have been told different things and it keeps changing to fit everyone else/ program needs and not the needs of students. As students, we are students of UNO but we are also customers/stakeholders too. I think UNO sometimes loses sight of that. Like other reviews have indicated the UNO staff/ professors some of them are unresponsive and they do not return emails or phone calls from students asking for help. So don't count on traditional student advisement because they do not do this here. You will navigate your program of study on your own. Hopefully you know which classes are offered and when they are offered or you will be a year behind your graduation schedule as certain class are not offered year round and no one informs you of this until it is too late.S J

Very unprofessional and unresponsive staff, if you want to transfer with an associates, be ready start over at UNO as a freshman. UNO is a business, they're mainly in the parking and book market taking advantage of students, books are twice the price on campus compared to other bookstores elsewhere including online, they advertise cheap credits but when you register, you're bombarded with fees that don't even make any sense, the total fees could amount to more than what you pay for tuition! Not to mention, if you want to meet with an advisor, even for a simple question, you have to make sure that you make an appointment a month in advance, that's how it goes there, they don't respond to emails, to them you're just another student and you don't really feel appreciated, I ended up leaving UNO despite coming with an associate's that was just earned with a GPA of 3.9/4.0, I was told I'd have to start as a freshman! I'll be fair however, the one professor that I took her class there was a wonderful professor she really cared about her students. Nonetheless, I ended up transferring to another university that took all my credits and recognized my hard work and I only have to do 2 years or less there! Since UNO loves profits, I guess in short I can say that I took my business elsewhere!Y. M.

UNO COMMITS LEASE OR RENTAL FRAUD. BE AWARE. Cancelling your housing contract early will lead them to immediately charge you half of ALL OF THE RENT YOU HAVE LEFT, which will likely amount to over $1,000. If you don't pay this all in one bulk amount on ONE DAY, they will begin to charge you late fees. If you get a replacement for your room, THEY WILL NOT TELL YOU, despite saying in the contract that a replacement releases you from what you owe (AKA, they should refund you, but THEY DON'T EVEN TELL YOU). When you call them, they will ask how you 'found out' and then direct you to a different number. Besides, living at UNO is not worth the rent anyway – dorms are messy, noisy, and I knew several people who reported black mold in their dorms and it was ignored by the university. Their classes are often huge lectures with old and upset professors who don't help you to actually learn at all. Majors are limited to mostly business or IT-related occupations with little room to move. Degrees take a long time because they require multiple prerequisites for one single class. UNO LITERALLY ONLY CARES ABOUT MONEY, NOT YOU AS A STUDENT. PICK SOMEWHERE BETTER. There are MANY, MANY BETTER CHOICES.Rachael

We were extremely underwhelmed and disappointed by our first experience here. They do not sell tickets in advance and I was told they never sell out. Well, maybe they should because it was so absurdly crowded that there weren’t nearly enough interactive toys to go around. There were so many “broken” signs on equipment all over the facility. The grocery store shelves were literally bare- absolutely nothing to play with. I was told they only have 2 shopping carts and I counted over 20 children in the “store” looking for things to play with. All of the bins in the doctors office are empty. All of the linens and bandages in the doctors office are stained and disgusting. In the barn and the bank, there were zero toys despite multiple bins that looked like there should have been interactive materials. I don’t know where the $15/person is being spent but it certainly isn’t on replenishing items that have disappeared. We drove 2.5 hours to get there and didn’t even stay that 2.5 hours because there were too many people and it enough working/stocker interactive material to go around. Visited on

If you’re looking for something for the kids, this is the place. The exhibits are all great for getting energy out, especially when it’s cold outside. There was a lot to do and see, so you could spend the day there. The little concession stand up on the 2nd floor is a great place to pause and eat, and then head back downstairs for imagination land and the gift shop. Other than it being super busy on the weekend, and the very limited parking, we had a blast. Plan to bring quarters for the street parking meters! Visited on

My girls had. Really good time. Even my 11 year said she had a lot of fun. It's well kept and clean. I saw other reviews saying the Cafe is pricey but we ate there and it was 4 of us it was $27 but each got a slice of pizza. 3 slushies, 4 bags of chips, a bottle water, a hot dog and a soft pretzel with cheese. That seems like we got a lot for what we paid. Can't wait to go back. Visited on

The Bemis Center is a world treasure, and we are very fortunate to have it in Omaha. One of the strongest residency programs for Contemporary art in the world, they bring exciting artists from all walks of life to share what they do with the community. Definitely check out one of the open studios they have a few times a year to get a behind the scenes look at the magic. My sister went to use 3D printer for a last minute cosplay project, and from what I understand I think everyone there actually tried to make things difficult for her. She never used one before, and the staff essentially shoved a manual in her arms and told her “good luck”. Every time she went to politely ask for help, a very rude lady grew increasingly annoyed. And after struggling to turn it on for about an hour, she only then realized the print would take 5 hours. I mean that makes sense, but after asking for help on what to do, my sister only received a snide “Well isn’t it a little late to be working on a cosplay??” from what I assume was supposed to be a professional DoSpace employee I mean at least ask if she has experience or maybe communicate the timeframe of 3D printing beforehand Not saying we won’t frequent the establishment again, but hoping next time you guys will display a bit more professionalism and not let someone’s child pose as a worker.Thanos the Mad Titan

Great concept, nice facility and great place to get work done after the libraries close. Most staff are nice and just leave people be. A couple staff aren't very friendly, very condescending and intrusive to guests who have questions, adjust their face masks, or speak with other guests even when these same staff will hold up their own lines by chatting with certain regulars. A few weeks ago a lady who works here got annoyed with me and yet took the liberty of showing me how to work their printers after I only asked where they were. I've noticed her and another lady get snippy with guests over petty things pretty regularly. It would be nice to be able to make reservations without having to be checked in by staff upon arriving; not the worst people I've ever been around but I've always had less hassle and better service at the city libraries.jordan schriner

Great facility and makes for a good time. Fast computers and internet. Needed to process and upload a few hundreds of gigabytes of photos and this made for fast work. Plenty of software and online access to materials. The Do Space made short order of the task and in a clean, sanitized environment. They have classes, learning for all ages. Learn new skills or 3 D printing. They even has a Metro Community College site located on the second floor.JEFF PETERS

Fontenelle is such a perfect place to escape. Watching my daughter explore, hike trails, play in nature, learn to do the ropes course, see the raptors up close, it's all a win- win. We get fresh air and exercise. Even if every parking spot is full, the park is large enough you don't feel crowded. There are a few dirt(and rock) trails I'm able to take the stroller, otherwise the boardwalk through the forest is perfect for both my 1yo and 5yo. Also, absolutely cannot beat $70 for a family membership! We've already gone 3 times in 2 weeks! Pays for itself! The employees are all super helpful and kind as well. If you've never been, it's time for you to go! Even without kids, you can do the adult rope course, or just go explore. You'll be glad you did!Vanessa Urbach

Excellent place. I think this is a very important part of Omaha and even though it is a little pricy to enter, I think it is great that this facility is here and is able to introduce people to the outdoors and also protect a lot of the natural land in the Omaha area and keep it from being developed. This place helped get me interested in nature as a kid. It is still a place that I enjoy hiking from time to time as it is very convenient and right next to Omaha. I also enjoy their various group hikes. It is definitely worth checking out.Stephen

Very lovely place! Its a nice place to walk and chill out. Good source of exercise and even a zipline activity. Even if you dont spend extra on the zipline, you can still enjoy the forest and the great view of the Missouri River. You can hike very close to it and theres some tree trunks you can sit on to look out at the river. This visit I saw a deer and a lot of squirrels; but Im sure theres many animals you can see. The Durham History Museum is an amazing place to visit in Omaha! In addition to the ongoing exhibits, the museum hosts a variety of visiting exhibits, so check their website to see what upcoming events and/or displays may be of interest to you. The static displays cover a wide range of interests. I personally enjoy climbing in the cockpit of the steam engine and then starting at the other end of the train and going through the caboose and the various cars as they looked in the 1940s and 1950s (and perhaps longer) during the heyday of train travel. The talking statues give interesting lessons about the types of people that came and went through this former Union Station, especially the thousands of military personnel off to fight during WW2. Other exhibits cover various aspects of U.S. history, as well as some fascinating looks into Native American life. The architecture of the building itself is incredible and during the Christmas season, a gigantic Christmas tree adorns the main hall. There is a souvenir shop and a working diner/malt shoppe with a counter and stools along with tables and chairs. Please check their website for current admission pricing. Extremely nice. Lots to see. Very well kept. Very interesting exhibits. The building itself is just a gem, Wonderful architecture. It was quiet, not many people around so we could take our time and see all the exhibits at our own pace. It was a wonderful afternoon, a couple of hours well spent. The history is just beautifully represented. It's laid out very efficiently, the trains are absolutely astounding. You can walk on them and sit in them. They are a treasure in and of themselves. The entire day was a big A+++……. Air conditioned, quiet, and the price was very reasonable for seniors. It was very reasonable for everybody actually. I highly recommend spending a few hours at the Durham museum, it's well worth the time and the money. Plenty of free parking, and again the building is just astounding, the outside architecture is also very beautiful… Visited on

We went for the Nelson Mandela Exhibit and it was amazing. Such a grand and beautiful building. Right when you walk in you can see you are in what used to be a train station. There are statues all around to show the past (ex. a woman at the ticket counter, buying a ticket. A couple sitting on the bench saying goodbye after his military leave). It's like a bunch of ghosts of the past. It is so cool! Even for a Saturday, there was no wait. You just pay at the front and then walk through the museum. There is an existing permanent exhibit that is pretty interesting. The current changing exhibit was absolutely amazing…the Nelson Mandela Exhibit. The history of his life mixed with world history was so interesting and moving. Visited on

I have been bringing my preschool classes here for the past 4 years as a part of the Drama Curriculum Infusion Project and it truly is a fantastic place. The actors are so engaging and really amazing with the kids. The Hitchcock Stage upstairs is a small and intimate setting that my students find magical no matter what play is being put on. I adore that audience interaction is encouraged, we all were part of the show and it is so much more meaningful and fun for preschool children!Nicole Sideris

After Covid we were looking for an option for Pre-School that wouldn't break the bank and provided learning for our son. A friend suggested St. Marks Pre-School when we started. Because of the special way my sons birthday is situated I was offered to be either in the 3 or 4 year old class. We choose the later. We are very thankful for the teachers at St.Marks. During Covid things have been transparent and safe. Drop off and pick up is virtually contactless and is quite frankly a breeze. The kids learn numbers and letters with a detail syllabus for each week. Mondays kids meet with the pastor and worship, BUT most importantly the kids have fun. I would 100% recommend St Mark's for pre-school and child care. We have only used the preschool, but I am confident that their child care is wonderful based on how they run their preschool. My daughter loves going to pre-school at St. Mark's! All of the staff and teachers are wonderful and they are very good at communicating with the parents. We felt very comfortable sending her there during the pandemic and they made changes as needed to fit requirements and keep everyone safe. I go here for a boxing and shape class. The instructor is very educated in the art and techniques of boxing. If you decide to join be ready for an intense workout at a very high pace. I just wanted to let all of you at the School of Rock know what an AMAZING show that was on Sunday. I honestly can’t remember ever having seen such a moving and well-executed program. (That’s saying a lot as we’ve been at the school for a good few years AND I taught piano for over 10 years. I’ve listened to Pink Floyd’s The Wall and watched it too— so many times since I was in junior high. This performance of the album fundamentally changed my experience of the content. There is something about having it performed for you live and by young people that makes you really think about its meaning in a deeper way. I honestly feel like I will carry that experience with me for the rest of my life. I know that it sounds…overboard—but I guess that’s art! Anyway, could you pass on my compliments to the instructors and the rest of the staff—and the kids for that matter. BRAVO.C M

I can’t say enough great things about School of Rock. My son started guitar lessons there about a year ago, and the experience has been phenomenal. He’s had lessons before and played a lot on his own but in the past year he has improved leaps and bounds and has become such a terrific musician. I think the combination of one on one lessons and group rehearsals has been just what he needed. My daughter started voice lessons a few months ago and is really enjoying it. She especially likes the group rehearsals because their group is fairly small and they are getting to know one another. In her large high school she gets a bit lost in the crowd but at School of Rock she gets her chance to shine!!Cheryl Hruska

My daughter has been in School of Rock since 2017, minus a few semesters. When she joined back after being away it was when the new owners had taken over. She liked it before but absolutely loves it now. They truly made this place even more amazing for kids. She’s made lifelong friends along the way and it’s helped her mental state immensely. She has always loved to sing but her vocals lessons have paid off big time! They have taught her SO much! She loves it and we love seeing her happy and going to the shows. Julian and her staff are such incredible people who really focus on education and technique with their students. The care and passion that is present in the studio shows greatly as I have participated in the show Nutcracker Delights (their winter show that many Adair students participate in) for 8 going on 9 years as a technical person in a variety of roles. I have watched the students grow not only through dance, but as individuals themselves. They are always so kind and humble in their craft and are wonderful students to be around. I believe it’s also important to note that Adair Dance Academy Inc. chooses to teach their students about how the arts and dance benefit as they move forward with their lives. Dance is about collaboration, teamwork, confidence and so much more. They guide students who want to pursue dance after high school and those who want to move on to something else, which I think is extremely unique to Omaha. Adair Dance Academy has been a blessing in our lives! My son has danced at Adair for 6 years and has enjoyed every moment. The best part are there are no "dance mom" parents there. All of the parents are supportive of each other's kids and the kids support each other as well. The studio is inclusive of all kids, no one has to have a perfect "dancer body" to be on stage. The costumes are all modest and age appropriate. Best part are there are NO hidden fees, the reasonable monthly tuition covers recital costumes and fees! The staff are all accomplished dancers themselves with impressive resumes. We love Adair Dance. Our daughter has been attending for 7 years, since she was 3-years-old. The focus from all the faculty has always been on each dancer’s individual skills development, technique and confidence. Dancers are taught to appreciate the art of dance. All songs, dances, and costumes are age appropriate. There are no competition teams, which is exactly what we’ve wanted, and I believe fosters a more supportive and positive dance community. The recitals are only about 75-90 minutes. It is also very affordable compared to other studios. There are no separate recital or costume fees. Our daughter has also attended summer camps/intensives and enjoyed her experiences!Amy Johnson

I can’t say enough about how much I love Master Kim’s World Class TaeKwonDo. I absolutely love it. I signed myself and my family up a little over a year ago, and could not be having a better experience. Master Kim is an amazing instructor- He is great about making his classes challenging, but also really fun! He is also great with the kids. My two boys, ages 6 and 8 are getting more disciplined and focused, and I feel it’s really translating well into their every day lives. As for myself and my wife, over the past year we have seen a lot of progress. There is noticeable improvement in our performance, we are getting more flexible, getting more power out of our kicks, overall we both feel more fit than we have in a while. It has been great getting to do TKD as a family. I was maybe a little worried at first about how it would work doing classes with my kids, because as much as I wanted to do this as a fun activity with my family, I also wanted to take it really seriously. I want to do my best, give it my all. And my concern was that doing it with my kids might slow me down or stifle my progress in one form or another. This has however not been the case at all! Master Kim does a great job of pushing everyone in the class to the best of their abilities regardless of age. He strikes a great balance teaching classes that have both kids and adults. Also, having signed up in January 2020, before COVID-19 hit, I can say that having online Zoom classes with Master Kim kept us sane during the pandemic! It was great being able to continue with TKD even when we weren’t able to go to the Dojang – or do pretty much anything else for that matter. I greatly appreciate the safety steps that Master Kim has taken throughout the whole pandemic. Overall I love martial arts. I took several years of Karate, when I was younger and have taken classes in several other forms including Chuong Nhu, and Judo, and can say that I have never received better training. Master Kim is the real deal and I am happy to be a part of this school.Andrew Kluka

Master Kim is great with children and is meant to be in the work with youth! His patience and understanding of kids in class helps keep the whole class together and focused. He provides a variation of strength, focus, and skill concepts in each and every class. He finds creative ways to use students as examples for their peers as they learn their Taekwondo skills and gives encouraging feedback to each student to never give up. Most importantly he gets the kids to respond, makes them laugh, and makes them work all in the same session! Master Kim has support staff during class which allows breakouts to practice in smaller groups as well as personalized attention throughout the whole class. He will call your child by name, no matter how big the class. Master Kim's Taekwondo studio is a great place to be and I highly recommend enrollment for any parent looking for a physical and mental activity for their children.Yvette Lawson

Master Kim is not only a professional in his field, but a wonderful teacher and role model. As a teacher myself, I can see how well he engages, builds relationships, and redirects children during his classes. He is always present, encouraging, and really really fun. Master Kim incorporates social skill building, self-management techniques, and listening skills into every lesson. His assistant teachers are always professional and respectable. I could have given 5 stars for it's amazing setup management but a star less is for it doesn't have everything. It's perfect if you are looking for a small, cozy gym with enough equipments and classes for fitness. It has commendable size cardio and weight training space along with sports space on the basement. There are two huge basketball courts with place and equipments for badminton, dodge ball, pickle ball. But if you are looking more of a training place CHFL isn't the place. It doesn't have a swimming pool and a running track and sets of equipments are also limited. Still I love it, the friendly staff, free towel service with membership, shower and locker room have locker with digital locks and fitness class available throughout the week. I recommend it if you want a friendly gym without a pool.Upendra Chalise

What I like about this place are the low cost of membership, the ample available parking, the wide variety and availability of cardio machines. The cardio area never has very many people in it. I also like the lockers that just use a code to lock them. What I don't like is that the weight room is kind of small. There are usually a lot of people in it, and several of the machines aren't in very good working order. I also joined a couple weeks before they changed to summer hours which are very limiting and a change I didn't know was coming.Frankie MacGregor

Our daughter was brand new to dance and is very much a free spirit. We decided to dip our toe in the water with a summer camp and see if dance was a good fit. We appreciated Bloom's commitment to building self-esteem and age appropriate attire and music selections. The teachers were extremely patient and kind, communication was great and they helped me pick classes for fall that would be a good match based on our daughter's interest. Our first experience with Bloom was my daughter attending their Elkhorn studio for a summer camp. She was a bit nervous as she has attended a different studio in prior years but she simply LOVED it. My son started here in January 2015 with the after school karate program. We are SO happy that he is able to do this rather than the after school program at his school because he gets so much out of it! Not only does he have some time to get homework done, he gets a snack and has learned valuable skills and discipline. I have never been around any martial arts and had no knowledge about them, but my son has really enjoyed learning and has moved up through a few belts so he has a sense of accomplishment. He does do some regular classes in addition to the after school program and we do those regular classes during the summer as well. I can't recommend Mr. Hilson and his staff enough for their interactions. My nephew now attends the same program and my daughter likely will too!Sarah Broadhead

This is a great place to build kids not just learning Karate alone but along with that , I noticed my child learning new ways to focus on attention while learning importance of discipline, positive communication in a road of competition, building to learn towards to achieve something with competitive spirit, how to set his plan to achieve physically and mentally. My son started here in August 2016 through the after-school karate program. We learned about it as my nephew has been attending since August 2015. We have been VERY happy with everything and everyone there. He gets picked-up at his school and then goes to the facility for a snack and homework time. He then gets karate instruction and learns valuable discipline skills. This is leaps and bounds above a daycare center or after-school program based at the schools. My son has already gotten his orange belt and has made good friends. We plan to enroll our other children when they are old enough 🙂Jessica G.

402 offers lessons in a wide variety of the arts: visual, vocal, instrumental, and audio engineering, to name a few. After several months of lessons, I can say that their instructors are very knowledgeable and accommodating, even (or especially!) for an adult student like me. As a plus, the collective is a 501(c)(3) non-profit that sponsors numerous community outreach programs.
