20 Best Summer Programs In Detroit, MI (2022 Updated)

I attended a meeting at Marygrove College and learned all about their revitalization of the campus. The buildings were constructed in the 1920’s.  They had fallen into disuse over the past decade. At this time they are being remodeled and repaired.  A college will begin operation in the main building shortly and in some cases is already in operation. Over the next two years an elementary school with attached high school will start to operate in one of the buildings.  At this time of year the grounds look sparse and bare.  I am looking forward to the spring and will return to look at it at that time. The woodwork in the building is still intact.  There are many religious artifacts and statues of great beauty.  The classrooms are large and have plenty of natural lighting. The telecommunications system is due to be updated. The people that work here are professional, interested, intelligent and kind.  I was especially happy to tour their beautiful library.  I will need to return when the sun is out and the windows are all open.  It is going to be a beautiful teaching college.Alfred Brock

The conservancy is doing a great job of revamping the buildings and in creating an environment which allows children to advance in their educational journey. U of D Jesuit is an outstanding school, and does a wonderful job of not just educating young men, but also of teaching them to be "men for others". The staff all believe deeply in the mission of the school, and it comes through in what and how they teach and interact with the students. The facilities are very good, and will get better in the fall of 2016, when the new science and technology wing opens. Something else that has always impressed me is the level of alumni support and commitment – there are numerous families who have graduated their fourth generation from UDJ. The only downside is the location, which isn't in the best neighborhood, but like most of the city, it is on the upswing.Kirk Dedenbach

Almost 15 years later and choosing U of D to attend is still one of the best decisions that I ever made. The academics are on par with any school one can find if not superior and more challenging. The most important lesson was how to be a positive force in people's lives and in every facet of life in which we encounter. When planning our trip I didn't know what I know now, so I've visited just a third – namely this great museum. The entire Ford complex is enormous. It consists of three different parts: – Ford Museum of American innovation, – Greenfield Village, where Mr. Ford was born and where you can ride the T model, steam locomotive train and visit historic houses, and – Visit the still working Ford factory which requires boarding their bus and riding some 20 min one way. So, if you want all of these count on entire day for your visit. I didn't know that and planned only 3 hrs, which is quite enough for the museum only. Each attraction is paid separately, but there's also a combo ticket including all with a little discount. As a kind office lady told me, the museum is the biggest attraction and if I have to choose one – let it be the museum. She was right. First to inform you, this is NOT only the car history museum and when speaking of cars, not only Ford cars are here. As its name says, this is the Museum of American Innovation and you'll find here apart from cars – buses, trucks, trains, locomotives, hotel development, planes (Wright brothers and Spirit of St. Louis), arctic missions, industrial revolution factory items, space program…in one word all aspects of life evolution in the last 100 y. Museum is just great, one of the best I've visited and you need at least two hours to see it, so 3 hrs I had were just fine for a leisure visit without rushing.Dejan Braki

Incredible the history of Ford! It's a huge museum with lots to see. We didn't see everything as I think it would take a few days. The old locomotives were a highlight for me, as well as the cars. The presidential cars was very cool to see. I'm not a huge fan of racing but I have to admit it was very interesting yo learn about racers as athletes and seeing some powerful racing cars over the years. Another highlight was the mathematics, airplanes, and furnishings. The doll houses were incredibly beautiful and detailed. The Walt Disney costumes were also very cool to see up close. If you love fabric and costumes, I highly recommend to see the exhibit. It is only for a short while though. The food was good, some variety of sandwiches, snack food and entree meal. The ladies who work there were wonderful, very funny, and very helpful. I really enjoyed the experience and hope to go back to see what I missed! Visited on

Absolutely incredible and exquisite exhibits. Everything is laid out so well you can easily travel from one section to the next, with a smooth transition in-between. The cases are spaciously laid out as to not be overwhelming. This creates a good flowing atmosphere that keeps you moving and staring at the next item. There's a nice cafeteria that you can eat at, but hold on to your tickets. You'll need them to get back into the museum. The attendants are wonderful. The place is neat, tidy, and just fun. Definitely take your kids here, your wife, everyone will have something to look at here! Visited on

This restored building is beautiful and the show was so great. The staff was absolutely wonderful and gave us some history on the building, very friendly. Tip check on other events in the area as parking designated for the Detroit Opera House was used by those attending the nearby events. If there is something big make sure to get there extra early and don't plan to be able to leave real soon as traffic from 2 events was crazy.Lisa Sutphen

Detroit opera should be ashamed of themselves. Went to go see Malcolm x payed 17$ for water and almonds. They wouldn’t let us into the theatre with our snack! DSA is a great school for young scholars. The Principle (Dr. Reynolds) is great at accomadating your specific situation. Whatever that may be, she will do what it takes to assure your child has what they need to succeed here. They focus on majors (art, broadcasting, singing, etc.) You must complete an audition and hold a certain GPA to be excepted into the school; and the kids must maintain that GPA to stay. High expectations. If you have a young talented person, who earns good grades, this is the school for them. The staff is always helpful and the lunch room is beautiful. Our experience at DSA is great so far, my daughter could not have chosen a better school. She's in her last year and although she already has enough credits to graduate, DSA allows their students to stay and keep adding to those credits. Which is great. She'll graduate with 26.5 credits. Gotta love that. As long as you're willing to work for it, Success is easy to find at DSA.Monica Overton

WARNING! Beware of this school! This school is one of the worse High Schools in the Detroit area. Children at this school full on bully students and send a gang of students to one another up. Very unsafe environment. Second their assistant principle is a little racist. I highly reccommend sending your child to a better school especially if they are stating as a Freshmen. This school is also terrible with handling bully issues and students also sell drugs around the school. They act like its a great school when in reality its just another inner city school where children are around drugs, violence, racist assistant principle and terrible administration. Terrible and Unfortunate After my child's experience at this school i decided to make an online review. I give this school a rate of 1/5. This school is not what it seems to be. The staff is going to tell you that this is a great school for your child because they have a opportunity to learn their academics and perform their arts. Well it turns out that's the biggest lie in history. This school is DPS school which is one of the school with the LOWEST QUALITY LEARNING. My child started before at a straight A student and came out 9th grade year and a semester of 10th grade year as a failing student. This school is a JOKE. A JOKE. Gorgeous place! Just became a member after attending a function. It reminded me of my sorority rush. You need a member to sponsor you and the 4 member signatures..then have to pass a membership board event. They didn't take everybody that applied. If a member invites you..go!! I tend to be friendly and outgoing…and everyone I met were friendly. Let your hair down, relax and have manners. Don't hesitate to ask questions.The 2 events I attended were amazing. The amount of space to get you boat in and out are generous and can take your dinghy to the Belle Isle beach..if you have one. There is no best of all for me ,however, the heated indoor pool was so warm..I wished I had brought my suit. The womens locker room was extensive and had everything including a short walk to the outdoor hot tub which is open year-round. There is a bike holder area to store your bike! What better place to bike than Belle Isle? Membership allows you to visit other clubs which will be great when in Florida during the winter! It was a very nice venue. I was kind of nostalgic like stepping back in time Not sure if I really cared for the artwork saying it's though it was medieval and also sailboats and stuff that made me think of slavery. The staff was awesome and the venue was very well maintained and clean. I most definitely don't think I would want to be a member of this yacht club. And I'm assuming that the photos and the women's powder room of the couples are donors??? or perhaps members??? All I know is I wouldn't want my photo on the wall of a restroom 😳😣 I wasn't surprised that I didn't see any people of color on the wall It would have been nice to have seen a couple. I just got married at the DYC and I am glad that we chose this venue. I met my wife at one of their bi-annual dances, so it was meaningful for us to get married there. Plus, we wouldn't need to decorate it – it's already beautiful. Ruth Ann & Samantha helped ensure that we were able to put on a memorable event. A married friend of mine told me at the reception that this was the best wedding he ever attended – even better than his. Incredible historic landmark. There’s a little free museum upstairs that goes into the history of tile making and pottery in Detroit. The shop downstairs has a beautiful selection from many different artists with a good range of prices to accommodate any budget. We found some small tiles starting at $5 that made for a nice souvenir. I’m so glad we had time to drop in. I highly recommend a visit.Kaitlin Darnell

I’ve been to several zoos and I would have to say this would have to be on the low end. We drove 2.5 hours to see a few animals and a lot of closed exhibits. First of all, every single restroom we went to was filthy. The floors were covered in mud, the toilets were deplorable and only one soap dispenser had soap in it. It’s like they haven’t been cleaned in months. Also – all of the hand sanitizer stations around the park were completely empty. We tried every single one that we saw, which was more than fifteen. My grandma had trouble renting a motorized cart. We stood there for about fifteen minutes before she was able to sit and ride away on one. They were having technical difficulties with their computers. Which the lady did apologize for. The aviary was closed due to the bird flu – which I don’t recall seeing any sort of signage before purchasing our tickets. Also, NO ELEPHANTS. The walk around the park isn’t bad and not hard to walk through. No big hills or bumpy walkways. So that’s a plus for us. Overall we will not be visiting again. Especially for the price and what you get with that price… we were all truly let down.Taylor Hyde

This is our first visit after the renovation and while we arrived late and venture only half way through, that in itself was a wonderful time and we are excited to set aside another (much earlier) visit to take the train, tour the full circle of the west end and return on the train for another wonderful time exploring and revisiting beloved animals and birds and so on and so forth. YAY Parking is a breeze, online ticket buying is pretty user friendly, staff is just wonderful in every way. Can't wait to check out the second half. WONDERFUL job all around to everyone. We enjoyed our visit! I love that the enclosures aren't completely fenced, makes the animals seem closer. I was impressed that one of the food stands gave us water cups for free and there were lots of bottle refill stands throughout the park. The only thing I wish is that there was more signage letting you know where you are or what you're headed towards. You can fit it all in one day but your feet will be sore! Thankfully I live not far away so I can't wait to go see what we missed 🙂 Visited on

If I could have made this review without giving any stars I would have. Just had an absolutely horrific experience here. The staff was incredibly rude and disrespectful to my two young children, ages 4 and 7. There are no other participants on site today – it is literally empty – because school is out for the long holiday weekend I decided to bring the two young ones here so they could ride and walk while I attempted to get a little bit of work done. Keep in mind- they are 4 and 7 – so are they always mindful about every single action? Usually not. But again, they are young kids, so consistent reminders and lots of patience are two key elements for any adult working with children. If you can’t exercise that, then you should not be in a position where you work with young children. My 7-year-old took off on the bike at one point, leaving his helmet on the table. He knows better, but was probably excited. The woman here yelled at him. I instructed him to come back and put his helmet back on. The final straw was the man berating him for stopping too quickly once which makes a squeaking sound and (for those of us who ride – we understand that this isn’t good for the bike so I understand the concern – it is the inappropriate manner and tone of his reproach that struck an uncomfortable chord with me) that he would have to be responsible for paying for repairs and going on and on – to a 7-year-old! I quickly stepped in and directed him to speak to me, not my son – that as the adults we should communicate with each other if he does not know how to communicate respectfully to my child. He told me to just leave then because he’s the coach. To which I replied, he’s not my son’s coach and if he can’t approach children with kindness and patience then he should not approach them at all. I am quite certain that had we been white these individuals would never have spoken in such a hateful, demeaning and belittling manner! I am disgusted and disappointed that this facility, which could serve a lot of good in the community, chooses to employ staff with temperaments not designed to work with diverse people. Last week we attended Detroit homecoming at the Lexus velodrome sponsored by Crain’s Detroit. It was an event that brought together small business owners in Detroit and members of the Detroit expat community. First of all, the Lexus velodrome is a really cool and exciting venue! It is a four lane track and there were cyclists racing at certain points of the event which was cool to see. In the middle of the track was a spectator spot with a bar and meeting areas for the small business owners, journalists, and members of the expat community to enjoy. Around the track there was booths for small businesses to set up and that is where we has the opportunity to interact with each other and the expats. There is a parking lot adjacent to the building and there is free parking on the I-75 service drive. The entrance faces St. Antoine street and the Detroit Medical Center.Plum Health DPC

The Lexus Velodrome is an indoor multi sport complex featuring a 1/10th mile cycling track with 50º bank turns, a jogging track and a fitness studio. The velodrome has brought bike racing back to Detroit. Last night they had the finals of the Madison National indoor cycling championships in two groups from qualifying Friday evening, they were grouped 9-15 and 1-8. The 9-15 group rode 120 laps or 12 miles where the 1-8 group rode 180 laps or 18 miles. Look it up at Lexus velodrome in Detroit, MI.RJ Olson

We used our reciprocal membership from the Dow Museum in Midland to enter today, this was our first visit with our 3 year old. We caught a live demonstration on combustion on the lower level but spent most of the time exploring the main level, particularly the section that had spinning discs and conveyor belts to stand on. The building was very clean, especially the bathrooms. Staff were all masked but unfortunately only about half of the patrons were despite a mask mandate listed on their website. We will absolutely visit again soon but may wait for a weekday visit to avoid the weekend crowds. Visited on

Unfortunately, this was a miss for me. The best part was the 3rd floor popology. The rest is kinda blah. They need to rehab the facility. There was a demonstration of something at the science stage and the worker talked so fast, I could barely understand her. I don’t know how kids could get anything from that besides the visual aspect. I think there is more bad than good here and for the cost, it’s completely overpriced. Save your money and walk around the DÍA or another museum. Visited on

I hadn’t been to the Michigan Science Center since I was in 3rd grade, and never really considered ever going as an adult. However, I was invited to their annual Halloween After Dark (21+) event and had a blast! The Science Center was full of fun activities, hands-on exhibits, and games for patrons of any age. Additionally, the live demonstrations were quite knowledgeable and entertaining. I definitely recommend the Science Center for a either any group-size! Visited on

Firstly, I highly recommend Math 4 Success. I initially purchased a 4-hour package, and it was worth every penny! Setting up the account, paying, and scheduling a session was a breeze. They have many tutors and time slots to choose from. My daughter is tutoring virtually with Dr. Lightfoot (owner of Math 4 Success) and is a college freshman taking pre-calculus. She was struggling in the class and was losing confidence in getting a good grade. As her parent, I was distraught and felt helpless. However, after just two, one-hour sessions, she went from nearly failing her tests to getting a "B!" She received another "B" the test after this one and stated she would have received a perfect score had she read the problem correctly. She informed me that Dr. Lightfoot is an excellent tutor that is highly skilled, patient, and good at explaining complex math concepts. I have had the pleasure to speak with him personally and can attest that he is very humble and passionate about what he does. Needless to say, her entire mood has changed! Obtaining these grades have given her the much-needed confidence to know that a good grade is attainable. Now, she has been helping other students in some areas that she is now stronger in. My son's Grade 3 teacher had informed me that he needed to improve his reading and writing skills. He was in Grade 1 when Covid hit and did not adjust well to online learning. We registered with Sylvan in December 2021 and he has been attending twice a week. Though he was resistant to tutoring, it turns out the consistency and structure that Sylvan provides is just what he needed. He has made significant progress academically and developed a more positive attitude towards learning. It's a nice academic school with a good education system, but the kids are too rowdy and the teachers barely try to keep the noise down. A lot of kids exclude others in lunch, and seemingly tease others also. I would recommend this school only for academic purposes, otherwise I would choose a different school!angie

I truly enjoy everything about Born Yoga. The business owner, Ashley, is very in tuned with making her clients' lives easier. Her website has clear, easy to access information, her email communication is always helpful and her studio is so bright and cheery. We found many yoga studios that offered "Mommy & Baby" yoga, but they were not the right fit for my toddler. Ashley has a dedicated Parent & Toddler yoga class that is a favorite among my friends and our littles. What I most enjoy about her (besides her bright, positive personality and attitude) is her commitment to "little yogis"…she always brings the most enthusiasm and authentic enjoyment to the room of toddlers. She is very patient and engaging — a must for toddlers. I recommended Ashley to my child's school and she now teaches classes there for children. Definitely check out Born Yoga! Our family loves Born Yoga. We just had our daughter's 5th Birthday party there, and the kids all loved it too! They are so professional and personal. True yogis! Ashley and her teachers interact with all the kids so thoughtfully, with kindness and age appropriate fun. The party was a perfect mix of really active movement like freeze dance yoga and easy sun salutations and quiet more collected moments for the kids. My daughter felt so special, especially when we sat in a circle and each shared something we love about her. Born Yoga is an amazing way to introduce your kids to the principles and postures of yoga in a super kid friendly and fun way! My daughter just finished her first week of camp at Born Yoga and I can honestly say it was a wonderful experience. She was excited to go each morning and was always in great spirits when I picked her up, even begging me to let her stay an extra hour for after care. It is evident that Ashley loves what she does and has created a space that it welcoming, fun, nurturing and safe for all children. Her staff is top notch and they are attentive to all of the children at camp. Only attending one week at camp I have noticed an improvement in my daughters confidence, which makes me so happy for her. Gentle Hands Of Integrity was by far the best experience of schooling I’ve had. First I would like to mention my wonderful instructor, Ms. Woods, she was very hands on with every segment, she was extremely kind and genuine, and wanted her students to succeed the program. Secondly, the videos and equipment we used to learn each chapter were specific, up to date and modern which ultimately made understanding the material easier for us students. I would highly recommend Gentle Hands Of Integrity to anybody, even if you have no prior knowledge on becoming a CNA. Lastly, yes, getting your CNA license from GHOI is a great way to make money , however it was the experience that I would never forget!Maci Wimbush

Coming to G.H.I was the best decision my family made. We were looking for a family friendly atmosphere that was professional and efficient, and we found it here. I have a teenage son and a young Daughter and I wanted to make sure they stayed safe in the Summer while they played and swim. It does me much pleasure knowing that my Son can help save a life especially his little Sister’s if need be. Taking this class was a great family bonding class as well. I would recommend taking this class as a family to keep your love one’s safe weather at home, school or playing by the poolside. I absolutely loved this program she helped me overcome a lot she is a wonderful instructor and very understanding as a person. I highly recommend this program to everyone even if you’re shy. She will make sure you understand and get the concept of what she is going over and not just throw everything at you expecting you to know.
