20 Best Psyd Programs In New York, NY (2022 Updated)

My son recently graduated from this college. He transferred in from a 2 year college so he was only there for 5 semesters. Things started okay but went downhill. Communication quickly became a problem. We had issues from professors, finance and counseling. It became so bad that to get anything done we had to cc the Dean in any messages that we sent. I also know of someone else who had to do the same thing. The last semester was the worst. He was enrolled as a full time student but when the bill came through it was in correct. We got loans for the first amount but had to get additional loans after the semester ended. No one sent an email we had to check the account because my son never received an email or his diploma. When we were notified by the finance department they told us we had to fix it. Numerous emails were sent to many different people but nothing was ever fixed. We finally resent the emails and cc’d the Dean and it finally got fixed. The college also changed the advisor without notifying us that it had changed. My son had to find his own internship and figure his classes out on his own. My daughter had the same issues with communication. She was signed up to go but never heard back. She then got a call from the advisor asking why she never showed up. The advisor had enrolled her in classes but never told her. She ended up not going. If you choose this college they will take your money but you will have to do a lot of work to make sure they are on top of things.Todd Crossett

I graduated from Roberts last year and I had a great experience. I do agree with some reviews that communication is not always great, but as long as you are proactive and take an active approach to your education here, you'll do wonderfully. The staff and students are very respectful and the professors seem to really care about you and your overall success. It is a nice size campus, not too busy and not too small. I went to undergrad here and loved it. There were always opportunities to learn outside of class, meet people through activities, and my professors knew who I was. I came here on a full tuition scholarship and spent most of my time on academic probation. Why? Because when I went to the enrollment adviser and told her that I was probably going to fail computer science, she told me that if I dropped the class that I would not be full time and not eligible for my scholarship. After I failed the class, she told me that I could have made up the credits over the summer. This tanked my GPA, but maybe she felt bad about the bad advice, which is why I probably kept my scholarship even though I was under the GPA. This school is basically a good place to go if you know what you want to do and just need a degree to do it. All in all, this is a decent school, but you have to be focused and advocate for yourself as advisement is sub par. If so, you will be fine. The clubs and activities are great. Food sucks! Dorms are decent. It could be better, but it could be worst.Danielle Lewis

It's not the worst school, but they just don't have anything that really justifies their tuition price. They're not significantly cheaper than other schools in the area and it's not a big name to people. The nursing program is supposed to be one of their best programs available but no one even talks about or recommends it. I work in healthcare in Wayne maybe 5 minutes from the campus and I feel it's pretty telling that every doctor I work with would sooner recommend Rutgers, Seton Hall or Montclair State. I never had much issue with any professors but the school's counseling and academic advisement teams are a joke. Overall, I don't think it would be a bad place to get a degree but probably wouldn't come back. Other schools nearby seem to have more to offer, a higher standard of quality, and most importantly they come with a name people want to hire from.Justin G

I would not suggest this college for people who are full time working adults. Very limited class times offered, hardly any night classes and 90% of classes are not offered online…even general education courses! They are also very unwilling to work with you if you cannot make a class during any of the times they offer. Most schools will allow you to take the class at another credited college and transfer the credits…WPU does not, not even for general education classes like math! I asked about taking three different classes at another school because of their limited class times and I got the same exact answer EVERY time…it must be taken at WPU. Why does a basic level math course have to be taken at WPU when you accepted my math class transfers from another school when I initially transferred in?!Jessica Henry

The only reason ppl go here and are willing to grossly pay for an education is the location. I went to school here and will say it is far overpriced for the education you are given. Some staff are great and really care about the education they are providing. Others just read off a powerpoint and have no interest except for a paycheck. Pace is expensive, doesn't help the students getting internships and when the students get one on their own, Pace takes the credit. After graduating, the students don't get a job. One of their alumni just got a good job and due to she owes money, they don't give her transcripts and are retaining her title. Is not possible for Pace to help when the students really need help? This is a good school. However, the quality is almost identical to the CUNY school I attended before coming here that costed significantly less. Additionally, the lack of diversity (granted, because of how this is a private school) is also lacking. At one time, the tuition for a full-time evening student was less than that for daytime, which made sense since there was no access to many of the daytime nine-to-five services. For 4 years Rutgers was our home, and the center of our family life. Our eldest children grew up here and the youngest was born. It was a wonderful life experience as a family, as people and students. Life at Johnson apartments was happy, with difficult moments of adaptation but definitely a great challenge. Rutgers offers an excellent learning environment to its students. However, I found that the campus has some flaws. For instance, some parts of the campus are unkempt and could use some tidying up. From the moment I was accepted to a few months later, it’s been nothing but miscommunication, incorrect information, and confirming false details left and right. Name any kind of detail, and they’ve gotten it wrong. Name any kind of procedural, logistical, student experience piece, and there’s conflicting information. The “right hand doesn’t talk to the left” saying doesn’t even begin to describe how dysfunctional this place already is, and classes haven’t even started. When you’re about to go into $120,000+ debt for the rest of your life you’d at least expect the “student success advisor” not to demean you at every turn, or for at least one person to confirm details that are actually true. If you’re considering applying here, go absolutely anywhere else and spare yourself the unbelievably unnecessary headaches and stress. This college has pros and cons just like any other institution. I was a business major, so I cannot speak for other programs. Some of the pros: -The campus is beautiful and very well maintained. -The campus is more-or-less contained in one area. -Some professors (not all) are very helpful if you show that you care. -The gym is actually useful. -The campus is expanding. -Very nice cafeteria. -There is a Starbucks next to the library, perfect for white girls. (FYI this is the only Starbucks in the USA that is franchised.) -Best school in NJ if you want to become a teacher. -STEM building is awesome. Cons: -Tuition is rising at an exponential rate. -Not exactly the most illustrious school. -Parking spaces are diminishing because of all the new buildings, adding to the HUGE parking problem that already plagues KU. -Not too engaging on campus since most people commute and leave right after their classes are over. -The grade curving is absolutely ridiculous. I worked my tail off to receive the same grade as the slackers. It got so bad that I had a 160% in a class one time. Had multiple classes where I received a +100%. How does that work? -Administration is horrible (especially admissions). -Not exactly located on the best side of town. -Student store is expensive (especially books). Student deli is extremely expensive (I'm talking $5-for-a-Red-Bull expensive.) -Some professors will avoid you like the plague outside of class. -Like anywhere else, some students don't care at all and you will have to deal with that. My overall experience with Kean was a good one. I transferred from a community college and Kean definitely was a step up.Robstat

Tuition is definitely affordable, and the campus is definitely nice. Professors are very understanding, and definitely help you when you need it. The only thing I have an issue with is the Trolley System. Sometimes I'd get out of class at 10:45 and my next class would be at 11 in East campus. Even if I got out of class and got to the Trolley stop by Kean Hall, sometimes the Trolley wouldn't come for 30 minutes. Maybe if the Kean App had a gps tracker on the Trolley to show where it was located, it would help a lot because sometimes you have to just hope it will come. Other than that I love this University. Miron Student Center is amazing, the information desk gives you all the information you need. Sandra Collins will always help you when you need it! There are many places to study in peace whether it be the library in a study room, Green Lane, East Campus, the Stem building, there's always a place to study in peace. There's also a variety of places to eat such as the cafe, Jersey Mike's, Auntie Anne's, or Smash Burger. Also, there are many clubs to join, and if you're a commuter doing extra curricular activities help kill time when you're waiting for parkway traffic to die down.Joshua Cadavos

EXCELLENT university! This university has a lot to offer to its students. Professors are very helpful and always encourage to become more independent and further your education within both the classroom and the future. Commuting can tough for those who drive (parking is an issue), but if your able to take NJ Transit then definitely do it. (Name another school that has a train station across the street from the campus.) Half hour from NYC, store outlets within a few miles for shopping. Kean has helped me immensely from not only an academic stand point, but also as an individual. My program was great but am consistently unimpressed by the school's most senior leadership. Fully confirmed when IN CLASS, we were bombarded and demanded (not asked) to leave our room for a meeting… And I give ALL the credit to our instructor on pushing back. It was ten minutes before our class was scheduled to end AND the meeting was to start. The arrogance was proven right then there. Pure annoyance for having to wait while we finished. They were also compassionate and nonjudgmental, so I felt comfortable being honest, instead of ashamed as I have been in other treatment settings. As a result, I learned so much from these experiences. I had several of these slips in the beginning, but they helped me to get back on my feet, and I have been completely sober/abstinent for nearly 7 months now–and happier than I can ever remember! As a parent of a son participating in the program at Whole view, words cannot express my appreciation and sincere gratitude I have for this facility. My son Jake began attending their IOP program this summer after many difficult years of living with a substance-abuse problem and nearly dying last year from his addiction. Wholeview provided my son with the environment he terribly needed, including an amazing support system made up of a professional staff of MDs, who are experts in the care and guidance of individuals with addiction problems. It was at Wholeview, where my son was able to share his experiences and gain acceptance of his problems. Words cannot describe how thankful I am to have found Dr. Colley, as it was at a time when I most needed someone to come into my life and help show me the way forward when I couldn’t see it myself. There is so much I could say about Amy and how she’s helped me, but the thing that stands out most is just how much she genuinely cares about her patients well-being. That might sound obvious, but it’s not, as most professionals simply care and put in work while they’re on the clock, but Amy went so far above and beyond that it left me in awe on so many occasions. Even though we’re no longer working together, she still checks in on me, both directly and indirectly (via my doctor). While we were working together, she would often text me to make sure I was up and getting my day started. When she recommended I find an ADHD coach, I was not motivated to do so, even though I knew it would benefit me. A couple of weeks later when I told her I hadn’t pursued it, she told me that she found one that is highly recommended and actually called the woman to recommend me as a patient to her. A few of years back, I fell and had a torn meniscus on both knees. As time went by, arthritis took over and changed my life dramatically. I live in upstate New York were the cold weather can be an enemy for people with arthritis. During this time, I saw four (4) different specialists who could not do anything but give me cortisone and gel shots which only lasted a few months and provided “minimal” relief. I walked around holding on to the walls feeling as if my knees were going to crumble at any moment. The last specialist wanted to do a partial knee replacement for each knee, which I couldn’t understand as I am only in my mid-40’s! In search of different alternatives, I did a lot of research into the Stem Cell treatment and decided to meet with Dr. Borenstein. He answered my every question, phone call and email with amazing knowledge, professionalism, sympathy and understanding. I was very skeptical at first but felt I needed to exhaust every other avenue before going ahead with such a dramatic and permanent solution as partial knee replacement surgery. I scheduled and received the stem cell treatment November 2016 and the recuperation has been mind-blowing in an awesome and very positive way. Just six days after treatment, I was able to stretch my knees in bed! I cannot even tell you when was the last time I was able to do that without feeling that knees would crack. I am a 49 year old male who was diagnosed two years ago with osteoarthritis in both hips. The recommendation was that I get a hip replacement on both hips, but was also cautioned that due to my age, I would likely have to repeat the process in 10 years' time. That was not an option for me so I opted to manage the situation as best I could. In December 2016 my hips started hurting me more and I knew that I had to address my situation. After extensive searching, I found Dr Borenstein and contacted him via his website. I was pleasantly surprised to get a call from him that same evening, during which we discussed my treatment options and made arrangements for him to review my records. After reviewing my xrays and report, he advised me that stem cell therapy was a viable option for me, and invited me to make an appointment for treatment. When I arrived for my treatment I was greeted by Dr Borenstein, who seemed very affable. After completing my sign in forms we went through the consultation, during which I was advised of the potential risks and benefits of the procedure, what to expect of the treatment and my recovery phase, and discussed any other issues that might be affecting me as a result of my condition. I was quite surprised when, on hearing that I had back issues, he requested my MRI and indicated that he would treat that too! The procedure itself was quite straighforward. Liposuction from the right buttocks, an hour long stroll around Lincoln Centre while the stem cells were separated, the extraction of blood, plasma separation, locating the injection sites and the injection of the stem cells and plasma all took 3 1/2 hrs, including my back. Did it hurt? Yes! Probably a 5 on the childbirth scale and a solid 10 on the man flu scale. But after the lidocaine injection into the hip after the stem cells, the pain that I had lived with for years was gone! My range of motion was 100% better immediately after the procedure and has remiained that way for two weeks so far. Dr Borenstein has checked up on me at least every other day since the procedure and continues to be pleased with my progress. I have recommended him to at least 6 people so far and would encourage others to check with him before making a decision that you may regret for the rest of your life. With physiotherapy, my prognosis for getting back to running is looking good. I am exremely grateful to Dr Borenstein and his staff, Karen and Lisa, for giving me the chance to reclaim my quality of life. Talk to him before you make that final decision. I attended this clinic for a few months and had a great experience overall. I do agree that the focus is very much on neurofeedback treatment; I was not entirely sure that this was for me. The recommendation was for sessions 2-3 times a week, and at $350 and hour it would be an understatement to say that this is a challenge on a student budget. Let alone the time commitment. Be prepared for this. Whilst my therapists were young, I don't think it is doing them justice to write them off as "inexperienced". Alex and Pamela are very professional, highly qualified, intelligent, and caring. Group DBT therapy with Dr Scott Lloyd is relaxing and illuminating. The psychiatrist, Dr Speken, is outstanding. Something that bothered me was the policy of charging a penalty fee for missing a group therapy session with less than 48hrs advance warning. Seemed too stern and sort of insensitive. Nonetheless when I expressed my dismay the charge was lifted and an explaination was given. If you have the time and means and you are serious about self-improvement/ getting better I do recommend Dr. Reiner and his team. I hope to return at a less turbulent time in my life to reap the full benefits of treatment here.Emma Cunningham

I was having anxiety, panic attacks and insomnia last year and started seeking help from the experts at Behavioral Associates. Dr. Reiner performed an intake eval and then properly matched me with Anya who specializes in these types of conditions. I am now a much more balanced, mindful and calm person who feels empowered with an armada of useful strategies and techniques to manage and regulate stressful situations in my life. I will say that I believe my own personal investment in this process (I did homework, reading, exercises–I treated it like a course/education) has also contributed to my successful journey through a durk tunnel and into a more calm, inviting and optimistic world. The staff at Behavioral Associates is fantastic, and I definitely recommend Dr. Reiner and his team to anyone who is looking for support and help in whatever they may be going through. If you're reading this review and trying to decide if you should seek therapy or not, I would say do it. What's the worst that can happen? You'd go a few times and then decide it's not for you. I had a very bad experience with Dr Heather Davidson. They called me at 1:30 and i went there at 1:20 they made me fill the form and i was put into the docter, she hardly spoke to me for 7 minutes, she was in hurry to go to the meeting, she assured me that she will find a therapist for my daughter, she gave me her number. I told her about the condition of my daughter which was quite worse. But its been one month and 20 days i couldnt hear anything, i called her several time but didnt get any response. Another thing is that they made me paid there for the consultation telling me that i have deductable from insurance and again claimed from the insurance. I talked to the receptionist and explained her and she told me she will refund me. Such an irresponsible act, i am very annoyed and disgusted.Manju Rai

I have been seeing Dr. Inamdar for several years. It is difficult to express in words the difference he has made in my life. Initially, I must say that he is an excellent diagnostician. He quickly and accurately identified the nature and extent of my personal challenges and through a combination of talk therapy and medication has helped me achieve significant positive changes in my life. In this regard, it is important to note that unlike most psychiatrists, Dr. Inamdar does not just simply spend a few minutes each month writing prescriptions. He makes himself available for talk therapy, which has been a critical component of our professional and ultimately personal relationship. And I say personal relationship because he truly cares about you and your overall wellbeing as a person. It is also important to note that BECAUSE he cares, therapy is not simply empathy with Dr. Inamdar. In a gentle way, he helps you see the parts of your personality that often contribute to the life issues you experience. Too many therapists today will sympathize, but Dr. Inamdar has the skills to help you realize that often times the challenges we face in creating happy lives for ourselves are within our own power to change with self reflection and hard work. With Dr. Inamdar's assistance I believe that I have been able to grow in emotional intelligence and improve both my personal happiness and professional success. I would also like to report that I have had equal success with Dr. Jacob, a psychologist who works collaboratively with Dr. Inamdar. While each has their own approach to therapy, they collaborate with me and my therapy in a highly effective manner. Like Dr. Inamdar, Dr. Jacob is understanding, caring, and insightful. Dr. Jacob has likewise help me achieve greater insight into my inner personality and has helped me achieve a much greater level of personal happiness and professional success. Over time, I feel as though both Dr. Inamdar and Dr. Jacob have become integral members of my broader "psychological family", which to me is the greatest testament to the long term benefits of my relationship with them. Finally, I am a very busy professional with a hectic schedule. Therapy Center for New York has always been extremely helpful with the procedural aspects of our professional relationship, such as scheduling appointments, handling prescriptions and ensuring my continued healthcare coverage for my appointments. I adored this place until at my last appointment. Everything seemed so smooth and easy with them. My doctor told me he would be leaving this practice and that the Therapy Center of New York would get me a new doctor with no problem. He never mentioned this before, just that he was quitting within two weeks and wished me the best of luck. More than a month went by, and I never heard a thing from them. I called back, they told me my new doctors name and that I needed to just confirm my address. I thought, "really? this whole time you didn't bother to try and call me and say you thought you suddenly had a problem with my address?" I obliged, however, and stressed that I was soon to be without my medication. They lied and told me my new doctor would be in contact with me /in a few days/. I left messages for the next month, until they finally bothered to call me back. They suddenly told me that they couldn't match me up with a doctor, and wished me the best of luck. No explanation, no referrals. All they care about is getting money from you. Once your insurance doesn't match up with their available doctors (because apparently your provider can quit with two weeks notice like a mall retail store) you might as well not exist to them. I truly hope I am an anomaly with this center, because no person with a chronic mental health condition should have been treated with the disregard that I was. And to whoever reads this at the Therapy Center of New York, you should be ashamed for treating your patients like disposable income and not living, breathing people.Anna Hirata

I have been a patient of Therapy Center of New York for the last 8+ years and have had nothing but great things to share. When I first started, I was skeptical about seeing a therapist of any kind. This office made me feel comfortable as did Dr. Inamdar whom I would highly recommend. The office staff was always helpful in getting my appointments scheduled and was always proactive if they needed to change the appointment, or needed any kind of documentation for my benefit. When I first started, the Doctor did a great evaluation of me as a person and we established things I wanted to work on. As you can imagine things change as we all grow older. Dr. Inamdar was tremendously flexible with my life style and what I wanted to work on personally. He was able to accommodate my college schedule and fast forward to now. He is tremendously flexible with my current rigorous work schedule as well. Overall, I would recommend Dr. Inamdar and his practice to anyone looking for a therapist. Their practice is professional, understanding, and most importantly flexible. This industry is definitely hard to trust someone, especially with your feelings and opening up about your issues. I’ve worked with Dr. Weinraub since 2017 but most consistently as of lately. My experience has been extremely impactful to say the least. He creates a space in the work we do together; where I can truly begin to have a healthier relationship with myself. A much needed voice and a kind ear before and during this unique and challenging times. Dr. Weinraub is able to listen and to empathize with your current condition and gives the encouragement to determine for yourself what you need in your personal life. Another aspect that I find encouraging in Dr.Weinraub's practice is him following up on key issues that require additional attention. Therapy is not easy, it takes time and self patience, progress is difficult to measure. However, rest assure that through his guidance you can determine what you need and how you can reach it. I started Beacon program because after years of not having to worry about my weight, I found myself at a weight I had never seen before and I was also eating more sugar and flour and not being able to stop. The therapists are sensitive and nurturing but they’re also firm and knowledgeable. The program was simple and made sense, take out the things I couldn’t control portions of, the foods that I continuously overate, foods that contained flours and sugars. The program allowed almost everything else with lots of wiggle room. What was so unexpected was the result… lbs off but I was also an energized, focused. I have been on a diet my whole life trying to understand my body and what it needs. Having an addictive personality food is one thing that I can't cut out all together. Working with Laurel at The Beacon Program has helped me understand that sugar and flour are foods that my brain needs in large quantities.
