20 Best Psyd Programs In Houston, TX (2022 Updated)

I really enjoy the student life here and most of the staff here is friendly, but overall the lack of professors and class schedule availablity is very disturbing. Classes that are available during the day is very limited and a majority are only offered at night plus a good 3/4 of the classes are taught by the same professors. The STEM department is very underfunded, I feel that this college is missing out on a big opportunity since the general area around here is next up and coming medical center (League City, Webster, Clear Lake, etc.). These two have been a big issue that have come up a lot when talking to other students. Another drawback of this campus is that you cannot graduate on time due to the lack of open class availablity. Also, this university is not a friendly parent student, so if you are a student that has kids I would look elsewhere. Overall, I feel like this is a very underfunded univeristy that needs a lot of improvement and it is sad to say that the community colleges are better than this one.Ashley M

Went to help move my daughter into her dorm/room on Saturday 1/16/21 & evryone we saw were very helpful, questions were answered & its been just a couple of days but my daughter has had an amazing experience!!! Update: unfortunately after the freeze we had my daughter was asked to go to hotel or back home (which was fine with me) until they "fixed" the problems that occured due to weather, the unfortunate thing is that it's so expensive to live there & YES she had help with financial aid but they did NOT give any discount even though she wasn't there for a month, not fair but oh well it is what it is..just had to write down the experience as part of my review.Jessica Ramirez

This University is trash. They can't keep professors, but their tuition keeps going up. Don't expect any help from your advisor because they won't be in your field of work and have zero clue about your major. They are business people only. The STEM department has drama in it so they are a mess. Expect to be in a class of 50 in a tiny room using garbage computer programs that are always expensive or vague and then not be able to receive any help from anyone. We have delivered two babies at Houston Methodist, and we could not imagine going anywhere else to have a child. The professionalism, expertise, and overall great attitudes demonstrated by the staff here is second to none. Our L&D nurses and techs were all amazing and every single one of them went that extra mile for us to make us feel more at ease and comfortable throughout our time here. They paid attention to the details and treated us like we were part of their family. The NICU nurses showed their dedication and compassion for my son and all of their patients. I never felt worried when I would have to leave my son solely in their care because I knew they had everything under control. Every single doctor my family had shined and really showed their level of dedication they have to their craft. They never spoke down to us or hid anything from us, and they were honest, personable, and compassionate in every interaction we had with them. Even the staff we encountered in the cafeteria, health and nutrition, housekeeping, and administration all treated us we the greatest attitude. You could tell that throughout the hospital the staff had great relationships with their patients, visitors, and with each other. I don’t think you could ask for much more than that from a hospital staff. I will always be grateful for this experience they helped provide and will forever feel comfortable bringing my family here, if needed. Thank you to the staff of Houston Methodist.Macon Fife

This place is horrible. Dr. Boom needs to bring in a new staff. The people he has working under him start from the environmental director. The people from H.R. This place loves cover-up things. My Patient Right, we're violated by a Psycho staff member. I called to report it back in August. I was told by the assistant director from environmental service that she will be getting back to me about this issue. It's 9/28/22. I'm still waiting. What really got me? I explained to her what happened; she tells me well, "What do you want me to do about it?" I even emailed her boss; he never replied back. I've called H.R. Many times, left messages . I spoke to the head person of H.R. it was a waste of time as well. This place is sick. I'm sure I will get a reply back after they see this review. I think I need to contact the news people 🤔 l need to let them know about this hospital who really don't have ICARE Value.tara gordon

This Hospital required me to leave the room at 8:00 pm where my daughter has been in induced labor since last night. They allowed her husband to stay with her but I am sitting in a cold waiting room at 11:00 pm instead of being with my only daughter while she is in labor with her fifth child. I don't want to leave her here as anything could happen with her and the baby. In the room was a nice comfortable recliner and a sofa where I could have rested after driving more than 200 miles to be here with her. I don't call this hospitality or family friendly. On the other hand I thought the staff was very professional and courteous and helpful in every way.Kathy Reneau Gomez

Can't even get my son in for an appointment. He has to see a psychotherapist, the gentleman on the phone said they only have social workers available. I then went on their website, where they had available appointments for many of the providers. I made one with the psychotherapist. Their website states "some in network with BCBS", but doesn't state which. So of course, our psychotherapist was out of network. I just looked on their system AGAIN and one of the psychotherapists have appointments available. Would love to try them out but they either need to further someone's training, or update their system, and update their website with provider's insurance acceptance. 3 days I've wasted now because there wasn't info listed that should have been.Courtney Dearman

0/10 Would not recommend. I chose this place because it was on a referral list from my son's neurologist office for a neuropsych eval. I have an order. Dr. Pasqua said several times I don't know what you need from me, or what do you want me to do, or something along those lines. Ummm, I want you to do the neuropsych eval that I have an order for. She also made me feel very bad about my parenting and parenting choices, both in her words and body language and facial expressions. She was very judgmental. So if you aren't a perfect parent, I suggest you look elsewhere.Megan Prihoda

Canceled on me literally the morning of my son’s very first appointment – even though she has a 48 hour cancellation policy for patients – on my only day off to do it. My husband and I told her the very first appointment that it would be hard to schedule appointments because of our work schedule and she still showed absolutely no consideration. She didn’t even call me herself to apologize. She had her assistant call me. I realize kids get sick, but in this field – or any field where you are meeting clients – you should have contingency plans for stuff like this.Sarah Wiggins

I have had good and bad moments at Legacy Montrose, in turn it took a year after moving here to get services, went to Harris Clinic also which wasn't much better, I am not sure even who my case manager is, it was a long grueling process of being seen 2 to 3 hours so bring your media chargers. No one seems to talk to each other from different floors and look to you for answers. There are only certain days to get tested or see the eye doctor. Their are to many presidents and a staff proving to be quite embarrassing at some point as everyone is the president. My nurse and care team are quite awesome I must say, the lab staff are quite rude and not understanding almost immediately if ur not on time, so it was the same at Harris Health also(considering covid reg., small area to wait and waiting on different floor or your vehicle). The on site pharmacy is great, again too many workers, I have seen literally 13 people and only 3 lines(what exactly are they doing in there if not assisting the clients waiting?). Good luck finding parking its just not enough area and people get frustrated. They have a on sight gym which I mean is a good idea but, no one is using because of covid and people dealing with real body issues, here's an idea there's your new parking lot money if not being of use or another labs space. Also this is not just services for HIV/AIDS, its a clinic for those needing labs(blood), obgyn, sti's, medical case management. I choose to be seen here medically because of convience, distance and at Harris Health if you miss your Dr. Appointment 2x's you will be reassigned another doctor (how degrading), and this from clients and other staffing on site while I was waiting there. Also to not be late (really?), well thats embarrassing and quite sad, as you already know doctors/staff that adherence is key so being medically seen and then discouraged for living life on life's terms (ex.-we don't predict the future car troubles, metro, traffic, kids, weather), is key to a successful life living with HIV/AIDS. I waited 6hrs to have labs drawn there I never went back.. Luckily I live 2 minutes from Legacy and they text you letting you know to come back in if you have time from work or life, so you don't have to wait in the building or on the property but don't go to far. On the good side of seeing the silver lining there is a McDonald's and Vodoo Donuts just around the corner, if you have to wait a extremely long time which happens quite frequently. Zoom is how I have communicated with my Doctor, its kind of weird still, but all part of this new age of medicine and medical management. I know people who have left Legacy/Harris with a sour taste in their mouth from both services, due to the inconsistent cohesiveness that the two medically funded facilities say they have, I have yet to see this also. On many occasions not just based on one experience, the reception/information area along with Labratory is at 90% RUDE/impatient and quick to dismiss. If you ask questions to further your understanding they easily demonstrate their frustration by facial expressions and tone of voice. This also falls on management/supervisors/directors of their dept as to their inability to properly train staff. Many patients dealing with preexisting health conditions or not, certainly DO NOT need to experience mistreatment from staff at legacy with little to no empathy/morals/compassion towards others. This mistreatment and lack of respect is demonstrated towards patients when a language barrier arises. I have seen it and heard it. Management !! DENTAL- The new Dentist at the Montrose clinic is so much better. He looked in my mouth before looking at x-rays and just calling to the tech which teeth had problems. He answered my questions where the last Dentist acted like she didn’t have the time and has a dental assistant tell me which of my teeth had cavities. She looked in my mouth for maybe 5 or 10 seconds. He spent time answering questions and even helped look for an earbud I lost. A nice guy who cares. And they have advanced technology that dentists I’ve paid for don’t even have, such as panoramic x-ray.James Lancaster

The receptionist Juanita interrogates you & questions you as if your lying, just to make an appointment, this place asked my husband to call before we can setup a appointment, when he did , he mistakenly said the wrong type of therapy, so when I called back she did not want to help us with a marriage counseling appointment cause my husband mistakenly said individual, I had to give her a piece of my mind, an got so offended said she would have to see if the Dr. would see me and she did not want to talk to me anymore wow , Juanita , there is many other help available, where they don't make people feel the way you do! You would think the type of business they would treat people looking for help differently, no wonder there is so many ugly fights like you told my husband. My husband and I were only given an option to see a student therapist (not licensed), we had two sessions which amounted to nothing. After the second session we were told the student was leaving, she explained her internship ended and the office would contact us to reschedule with another therapist, however we never heard from this office again. I was saddened by something that happened today. I engaged a therapist to help with my marriage problems. I told her my wife also needed counseling if she knew of someone that could help. She said I can counsel you each independently but I cannot counsel you together as a couple. We finished our session and scheduled the next session. Then my wife scheduled a session with the therapist for the following week. After engaging with my wife on her session, she also scheduled a follow up session with the same therapist. At this point I got a call from the office that there was a conflict of interest and that she could no longer work with me because she was now working with my wife. I made the comment that’s not what was supposed to happen we need to clean this up. They then turned around and canceled the appointment via email with my wife and told her they would not be able to work with her. So at this point we’re both very upset. My wife canceled her appointment and I canceled my appointment and never once did we get a call from the therapist.. I don’t understand why the therapist did not make an effort to call and clean up the misunderstanding on the phone rather than just leaving two lost people more lost than when we went to look for help and with less money. They billed me $200 after telling me I was covered. Had to call my insurance company to sort it out since it said it had been paid to them. Real Talk told me the insurance “just wouldn’t pay” and made me have to do their job of getting their money for them. This is so disrespectful and distressing to someone who is chronically ill/dying on disability. It added to my stress. The therapist also had the emotional range of a Easter Island statue when I told him I needed help dealing with the fact I’m dying from a nuerodegenerative disease. Screw off Real Talk. You may try to rob me but I’m not dead yet I won’t let you. *Edit* the insurance paid for it was covered by and paid for but they still charged me. Taking my money after insurance says they paid is a robbery. But likely it’s just incompetence. Do not blame it on convention. Your a healthcare service. I have observed Tasneem exercise both efficiency and patience when faced with difficult challenges. In both her research and clinical work, Tasneem pays special attention to matters of social justice, multiculturalism, and gender equality. My adult son attended McLean OCD institute. His experience was far less positive. We had high hopes for the Harvard affiliation our expectations were extremely high. Navigating insurance thru SJH health advocates was a traumatizing experience. No communication between them and our insurance company which delayed his in-take. This should be a smooth transition. After 17 days of waiting he finally arrived. He was in a bedroom sandwiched between the LCSW & staff office and the kitchen. He heard conversations on both sides morning and evening. He left the home and no one knew he was gone for over 2 hours. Then, unfortunately, the schedule I was so impressed with turned out to be less impressive. 4 hours of ERP, was maybe 1 to 1.5 hrs. at the cost of sounding soo negative I am so disappointed. After, leaving, not one single follow- up. It is costly, so before deciding on this facility, check out others. I had to call the CEO of SJH to have him find out why claims were not being processed. Again, when you are under stress for an individual struggling with OCD, depression & anxiety, you would think this organization would take some if the burden off of you and make it as easy as possible with dignity instead of the hair raising experience it was. Do your homework. It may work for some, but it did NOT work for him.Michael Bos

I was a patient at the Houston OCD program for 3 weeks. I do not live in the area, so it was a huge leap of faith to travel quite a distance and give this program a try. It is hard work but it sure beats the alternative of staying sick. Prior to attending this program, I had exhausted all my options with little to no change in my mental health status. The experience was was incredible and really life changing, to say the least. Everyone was so compassionate and knowledgeable. I learned so much about how to better manage my condition and they gave me a concrete plan on how to continue treatment after my discharge. My individual therapist was Jennifer Sy and she was fabulous! You really can see the difference going there vs your everyday run of the mill therapist. These people are really dedicated to your treatment and are on the cutting edge of OCD treatment. Everywhere else I went, I just felt like another patient. At the Houston OCD program, I felt as though I really mattered and that everyone really cared about my recovery. If you’re suffering from this awful disorder, I highly suggest giving them a call. It could change your life!!Mila K

There were positives and negatives about this program that I found while I was there. Ultimately, the staff is there to help you learn, progress and succeed but it is up to you as an individual to put in the work to make the change. There's no magical cure all to OCD and if you go there thinking they can just erase the problem, you'll be disappointed. Yes, I could certainly find things to critique about the time that I was there and I let the staff know about the few things that I disagreed with. However, I ultimately left the program in a much better position than I was in when I started. That's the most important part to consider. Did they provide an environment to learn and get better if you put in the work. YES!! I will say that SJ Health was a waste of money and they did absolutely nothing to help get the cost reimbursed through insurance but that's a completely different company and has nothing to do with the quality of the program at this facility. Poor communication, staff never reaches out about group therapy when spaces become available. Even though I was constantly sending emails for updates. Now they said that I have been added on their list and that they reached out via phone the first week of May and there was no call or voicemail recorded on my phone nor email saying that “ a space was available the following week in may”. I used Conative Group for grief and guidance counseling for a young family member. The staff was wonderfully courteous, calming, and encouraging to my youngster. I was there in the 70s. I graduated with a Bachelor's of Science in Social Rehabilitation and Social Services…. I was told when I first tried to enter that I should go and do hair since I could probably make more money anyway, by one of the Deans of the school… I graduated 4th in my high school, in Houston Texas, out of 100, with a Cosmetology License, also. Long story short, I tried to get a part-time job, on the work study program, in the beauty shop there on campus. I was not hired, even though there were no Black beauticians in the shop. On the other hand it was the Greatest four years of my life… I am an evangelist now and a published Author of "All of the Words Spoken by the Women of the Bible" published in 2017, with approximately 20 to 30 first cousins who have graduated since from SHSU along with the a great- niece. I loved SHSU while I was there. I never truly once had a “bad” professor. All of them were caring and helpful towards me and wanted to see students succeed. Great faculty. There are ample amounts of free resources that the school has to offer students, but unfortunately many students don’t utilize them or are unaware of the resources they have access to as a student. I’m glad I chose SHSU. I enjoyed it while I was there, but I’m glad I got out of there when I did only because the town started growing like crazy and the streets have no room to expand. I personally like the small town/historical feel SHSU and Huntsville had when I was a freshman (before all the construction). My favorite part of campus will always be the Austin Hall area. Not a fan of the new, “modern” buildings going up everywhere, but hey, it’s great the university is becoming so successful like it is.Daphne Swiateck

Wow! Sam Houston State University really is a classic small-town University. Huntsville has done amazing things to insure a great college atmosphere has been preserved. Definitely a great place to visit when you visit Houston. When you enter the school with its front gate, you are greeted with a. Long hall of old trees covering the passage of both car and sidewalk. Then after the long passage, you can see an arch right in the middle of it, leading the the main school faculty. I got to have a sneak peak within the buildings and discovered they are delicately placed together and every classroom is pretty neat. On the side note, aviation enthusiasts can visit here since it’s at the start of Houston airport runway and you can see planes taking off or landingIan Chen

What a wonderful experience! The campus is the ideal place to take a stroll along the trees and appreciate the architecture. The arches were among my favorite! The university has a lot of places to explore like the Chapel, the library, the gardens and the many sitting areas to just enjoy the view! Beautiful campus close to downtown Houston and Houston Medical Center. Lots of oak tree lined walking and jogging paths for students, visitors, and neighbors to use. Parking on campus can be a challenge and is expensive if not staying a while, caps out at $12 for a day but roughly $5 an hour others. The rec center is a very nice facility with a great out door pool.Richard Smith

Dr. Ott is WONDERFUL and her Clinic Coordinator, Carey is AMAZING. From the first moment I spoke with Carey, she listened, comforted, and is top notch when it comes to customer care. And when I first met Dr. Ott, I knew that we were in good hands. She has a Great bedside manner, she answered every question (I had many ;), provided detailed instructions, and eased my fears. Texas Southern University. *sigh* I visited this school countless number times because my boyfriend and I are long distance. The faculty and students became family. It got to the point where people thought I went there for graduate school. Everyone you meet at this school takes PRIDE in being a Tiger. Texas Southern University is a public Historical Black College University (HBCU). According to their website, "The university was established in 1927 as the Houston Colored Junior College. It developed through its private college phase as the four-year Houston Colored College. On March 3, 1947, the state declared this to be the first state university in Houston; it was renamed Texas State University for Negroes. In 1951, the name changed to Texas Southern University. " Let's just say, HISTORIC. Every time I would come visit, the school was always painted with the smiles of maroon and grey. Students have the opportunity to advance in their education with a bachelors, masters, and in Law. Texas Southern University is a championship school. When I say that, I actually mean it. Their sports teams are well known in their SWAC Division for great reasons. This charming HBCU school is home to a diverse amount of students that love to participate to make their school a better place. From their student council to Greek life (Black greek orgs, band, music, and multicultural), to specialized clubs, Texas Southern University has a lot to offer. Note and advise to current students and future students: Get involved. Do internships. Next work as much as possible and cherish what your school has to offer!Shameika Smith

I decided to do re-admissions for this upcoming semester. I applied early August( yes I know, it was last minute) so I was prepared for there to be delays. What I wasn’t prepared for miscommunication and wasting gas. I was told by one admissions counselor I needed a letter from the Dean of my major when I was there in 2014, cool, I drove all the way to TSU to get that letter. Days go by and I get an email saying my application was incomplete. I emailed the Director of admissions and she says I got the wrong letter and I needed to get a letter from the Biology Dean.. umm ok cool. So drove all the back to TSU to get that letter. That was Monday August 20th, school starts on the 27th so I’m cutting it close at the point. More days go by and I hear nothing. Today, August 24th I called because classes start in 3 days and I’ve heard nothing. I was left on hold for 24 mins just to be directed to the wrong departments VOICEMAIL. Now I’m on the phone being told I need to get another letter from the Dean of the major I got a letter from the FIRST time I went up there. During this entire day I’ve been put on hold 3 times, each time has been for more than 20 mins. My advice, if you want to attend this school DO NOT wait last minute. I graduated from TSU Spring 2015 and I can honestly say it is the best decision I have made. The classes are smaller and the professors actually know who you are, especially within the Jesse H. Jones School of Business. I was a 4 year student athlete and most of the professors were understanding of my schedule and able to work with me. Don't get me wrong, TSU still has a long way to go and will make improvements, but in all honesty the frustrations help students truly prepare for the real world… you will have to work hard for everything, double check/clarify information and confirmations, and make copies of every documents (especially with signatures **IF IT DOESN'T HOLD UP IN COURT, IT WON'T HOLD UP AS EVIDENCE HERE EITHER**). This experience will show you what reality is like and teach people to be accountable and organized. for better or worse, I will always love my HBCU. Like anywhere else it has its pros and cons but at the end of the day, the college experience is what you make of it.Steffanie Milan

Everyone here is so welcoming and extremely nice. I love the campus, it’s beautiful and I love everyone there. They are taking precautions by having only two days a week per person and the rest of the days are online, while there everyone wears a mask. Aaron Estrada is the academic advisor and helps you in any way he can. They had a drive through welcome to all the new students transfers and freshman. HBU is a great school. The staff here really cares for the students. They have great and ideal degree plans and they really focus in on what you plan to do in terms of what you ask for. It's really a small campus and has great Christian views. You'll love going to convocation here, it's always a great time. Every time I return to the campus, I’m filled with such tremendous pride … I remember as an undergrad, a lifetime ago, when the “master plan” was created and seeing that vision realized is just awesome! My time at the University was transformative and I’m proud to give back as a lifetime member of the alumni association, an athletics season ticket holder and I serve on my fraternity’s alumni volunteer council. I have been a Baylor patient since 2019. Dr Othman (gastroenterology), Dr Denktas (cardiology) and Dr Tosur (internal medicine) have been great with caring me, answering my questions, showing concern, taking my symptoms seriously, and digging deeper into them. They have been excellent in their specialty, and behaving me with perfect manners. I have always felt so valued. Finally I have been diagnosed with a chronic pancreatic disease in 2020. So why 3 stars for Baylor? The reason why I am giving 3 stars to Baylor is because of my experience with the two endocrinologists Dr. Trofimovsky and Dr. Desai. I visited Dr Trofimovsky 5 times and Dr Desai 3 times. My main concerns were having fasting blood sugar levels 110+ every morning for a long time and severe symptoms after eating. Though I have a history of severe reactive hypoglycemia and on acarbose for 5 years, Dr Trofimovosky did not care me enough, didn't answer my questions but got rude, even advised me to accept my symptoms, and live with them- she even uttered words that can never be used while communicating a patient. So, I decided to change my provider- still trusting Baylor- to Dr. Desai. I requested Dr. Desai not to collaborate with Dr. Trofimovsky but she did the opposite, not respecting my patient rights. From the very first visit, she left me alone with a resident, left the room for the most part of the visit, and listened to my story from the resident instead of me coming back to the room for the last 10 minutes. Dr Desai wanted me to wear a continuous blood sugar monitor (DEXOM), but then she said she cannot trust its results when it showed lows and highs. In my 2nd or 3rd visit, I was already diagnosed with a pancreatic disease in Baylor , but she even didn't have a look at the results of the biopsy and screenings, and said it is not her focus as if pancreas has nothing to do with hormones and insulin levels- !!!!pancreas is the organ of endocrine system and digestive system and all my symptoms were related to these two. Having no hope even after changing the provider and my bad experience of Dr. Desai not respecting my patient rights and preferences, I had to leave Baylor endocrinology. Currently, I am seeing another endocrinologist from another big hospital in Houston where I am getting good treatment and care. My story in Baylor endocrinology with these two doctors has many other weird details but they cannot shadow my good experiences with other excellently professional Baylor doctors of course. To cut to the chase, what I would say is that Baylor is a great hospital, but unfortunately may be working with some "not caring, not respecting" doctors as in my experience, so carefully pick your doctors! I hope Baylor will consider this because I do appreciate Baylor no matter what!El Bu

It's always a wonderful day when you can visit your doctor and the concerns that prompted the appointment are addressed FIRST, (first is the key word) before getting into recommendations for things you did not make an appointment for. I am appreciative that I was able to find an experienced professional, capable of listening to me first explain the reason for my visit, taking care of that concern and then moving into exploring options for care along with suggestions about what I need or should consider to do going forward. Experiencing extreme anxiety has come with a mammoth challenge of navigating through these appointments alone at times, often feeling judged as well as handled brutally; However, knowing that I am under the care of a physician who is compassionate and understands the degree of the attacks and is able to help me process through has come with great rewards. I felt comfortable during my visit and most importantly, she did not shun me away or ignore future visits and appointments due to my anxiety.Niedria Kenny

My mom was scheduled for Cardiologist visit in BCH by here PCP, but by the time we had an appointment (3 month later) We where dined access to our doctor because recommendation from our doctor was not processed yet. This only opened up when my wheelchair mother visited for confirmed appointment. They simple sent us home. They also asked us to switch PCP to one form there Baylor's account if we want to avoid problems in the future. 1. Absolutely unprofessional treatment. 2. Bureaucracy that defeats purpose of hospital. 3. One deportment knows nothing about other departments action . 4. No one in administration cares about anybody. Personal success doesn't depend on quality of service for this people. 6. Fictional facilities for complains and quality issue reporting . Phone number listed just dropping calls. This school will change your life for the good. You will be stretched spiritually. You will be challenged biblically. However, you will have a greater appreciation for the word of God. You will be well able to teach it, explain it, share it with a better & clearer perspective & understanding. I love it here. The professors are wonderful they care about us as a person, we are not just a social #. Class sizes are small, we are all respectful of each other’s journey spiritually.
