8 Best Psychology Grad Programs In Houston, TX (2022 Updated)

I really enjoy the student life here and most of the staff here is friendly, but overall the lack of professors and class schedule availablity is very disturbing. Classes that are available during the day is very limited and a majority are only offered at night plus a good 3/4 of the classes are taught by the same professors. The STEM department is very underfunded, I feel that this college is missing out on a big opportunity since the general area around here is next up and coming medical center (League City, Webster, Clear Lake, etc.). These two have been a big issue that have come up a lot when talking to other students. Another drawback of this campus is that you cannot graduate on time due to the lack of open class availablity. Also, this university is not a friendly parent student, so if you are a student that has kids I would look elsewhere. Overall, I feel like this is a very underfunded univeristy that needs a lot of improvement and it is sad to say that the community colleges are better than this one.Ashley M

Went to help move my daughter into her dorm/room on Saturday 1/16/21 & evryone we saw were very helpful, questions were answered & its been just a couple of days but my daughter has had an amazing experience!!! Update: unfortunately after the freeze we had my daughter was asked to go to hotel or back home (which was fine with me) until they "fixed" the problems that occured due to weather, the unfortunate thing is that it's so expensive to live there & YES she had help with financial aid but they did NOT give any discount even though she wasn't there for a month, not fair but oh well it is what it is..just had to write down the experience as part of my review.Jessica Ramirez

This University is trash. They can't keep professors, but their tuition keeps going up. Don't expect any help from your advisor because they won't be in your field of work and have zero clue about your major. They are business people only. The STEM department has drama in it so they are a mess. Expect to be in a class of 50 in a tiny room using garbage computer programs that are always expensive or vague and then not be able to receive any help from anyone. Student Involvement and Leadership office is garbage. DO NOT COME HERE! I KNOW SOME PEOPLE MAY HAVE NO OTHER OPTION BUT YOU MUST FIND A WAY TO GET TO A GOOD UNIVESITY.Free Bird

Texas Southern University. *sigh* I visited this school countless number times because my boyfriend and I are long distance. The faculty and students became family. It got to the point where people thought I went there for graduate school. Everyone you meet at this school takes PRIDE in being a Tiger. Texas Southern University is a public Historical Black College University (HBCU). According to their website, "The university was established in 1927 as the Houston Colored Junior College. It developed through its private college phase as the four-year Houston Colored College. On March 3, 1947, the state declared this to be the first state university in Houston; it was renamed Texas State University for Negroes. In 1951, the name changed to Texas Southern University. " Let's just say, HISTORIC. Every time I would come visit, the school was always painted with the smiles of maroon and grey. Students have the opportunity to advance in their education with a bachelors, masters, and in Law. Texas Southern University is a championship school. When I say that, I actually mean it. Their sports teams are well known in their SWAC Division for great reasons. This charming HBCU school is home to a diverse amount of students that love to participate to make their school a better place. From their student council to Greek life (Black greek orgs, band, music, and multicultural), to specialized clubs, Texas Southern University has a lot to offer. Note and advise to current students and future students: Get involved. Do internships. Next work as much as possible and cherish what your school has to offer!Shameika Smith

I decided to do re-admissions for this upcoming semester. I applied early August( yes I know, it was last minute) so I was prepared for there to be delays. What I wasn’t prepared for miscommunication and wasting gas. I was told by one admissions counselor I needed a letter from the Dean of my major when I was there in 2014, cool, I drove all the way to TSU to get that letter. Days go by and I get an email saying my application was incomplete. I emailed the Director of admissions and she says I got the wrong letter and I needed to get a letter from the Biology Dean.. umm ok cool. So drove all the back to TSU to get that letter. That was Monday August 20th, school starts on the 27th so I’m cutting it close at the point. More days go by and I hear nothing. Today, August 24th I called because classes start in 3 days and I’ve heard nothing. I was left on hold for 24 mins just to be directed to the wrong departments VOICEMAIL. Now I’m on the phone being told I need to get another letter from the Dean of the major I got a letter from the FIRST time I went up there. During this entire day I’ve been put on hold 3 times, each time has been for more than 20 mins. My advice, if you want to attend this school DO NOT wait last minute. I graduated from TSU Spring 2015 and I can honestly say it is the best decision I have made. The classes are smaller and the professors actually know who you are, especially within the Jesse H. Jones School of Business. I was a 4 year student athlete and most of the professors were understanding of my schedule and able to work with me. Don't get me wrong, TSU still has a long way to go and will make improvements, but in all honesty the frustrations help students truly prepare for the real world… you will have to work hard for everything, double check/clarify information and confirmations, and make copies of every documents (especially with signatures **IF IT DOESN'T HOLD UP IN COURT, IT WON'T HOLD UP AS EVIDENCE HERE EITHER**). This experience will show you what reality is like and teach people to be accountable and organized. for better or worse, I will always love my HBCU. Like anywhere else it has its pros and cons but at the end of the day, the college experience is what you make of it.Steffanie Milan

Everyone here is so welcoming and extremely nice. I love the campus, it’s beautiful and I love everyone there. They are taking precautions by having only two days a week per person and the rest of the days are online, while there everyone wears a mask. Aaron Estrada is the academic advisor and helps you in any way he can. They had a drive through welcome to all the new students transfers and freshman. They give out free gifts all the time and it is just an amazing environment.Tristan Spencer

I wanted to love this institution, truly . However, my experiences have been the worst thus far . I am a graduate student here , 1st semester. I never felt so disregard before in my life . This is NOTHING BUT A BUSINESS. They do not care for the students . I moved out of state to be here . Thankful God’s Grace and Mercy covers me. I am done with the college. HBU is a great school. The staff here really cares for the students. They have great and ideal degree plans and they really focus in on what you plan to do in terms of what you ask for. It's really a small campus and has great Christian views. You'll love going to convocation here, it's always a great time. It's nice listening to not only the staff but what previous students had to say during convocation.Georje Barrera

(mostly robbery in the parking lots) financial assistance 4.5/5. job recruitment once you graduate 3/5. library safety 3/5 (lady going around selling $1 cookie, turn into $10 lol). security and police presence 2/5. (they're mainly just sitting in the library or in their office) I've never seen them patrol. Parking lot citations 4/5. (they'll give you a ticket in a blink of an eye lol) Overall, it was an okay experience for me when I attended here back in 2019. Most of my family went here and did pretty well once we graduated. Every time I return to the campus, I’m filled with such tremendous pride … I remember as an undergrad, a lifetime ago, when the “master plan” was created and seeing that vision realized is just awesome! My time at the University was transformative and I’m proud to give back as a lifetime member of the alumni association, an athletics season ticket holder and I serve on my fraternity’s alumni volunteer council. After all these years, the one thing that remains the same, parking can be a challenge at peak times in certain parts of campus.Rick Boeker

This school will change your life for the good. You will be stretched spiritually. You will be challenged biblically. However, you will have a greater appreciation for the word of God. You will be well able to teach it, explain it, share it with a better & clearer perspective & understanding. I love it here. The professors are wonderful they care about us as a person, we are not just a social #. Class sizes are small, we are all respectful of each other’s journey spiritually. Using a fake name because I can't have employers read this. UH NSM had the loveliest & most helpful professors. The friendships I made there will last a lifetime. However, I do not have the words to express my distaste in UH's NSM Undergraduate Advisors. I have several complaints I feel students (and prospective students should be aware of): 1. Some advisors are downright rude & condescending. ex) When it was time for me to apply for graduation, I asked my advisor where to go on UHSelfService to make sure I had taken all my required courses. She was a new advisor at the time (May 2017) & said to me in an extremely condescending voice "I don't know how you got this far without learning how to use a computer. You should know better." WHO TREATS STUDENTS THIS WAY? She certainly had no right to talk to me like this. If you don't like advising students, don't be an advisor. If a person on campus had been so rude to me, I would definitely have said something back. But hey- students can't be rude to advisors without repercussions can they? 2. I was part of UHin4 & met with an academic advisor EVERY SINGLE SEMESTER. They waited till my LAST SEMESTER to tell me 1 of my courses hadn't transferred from my previous college even though I had EXPLICITLY asked them multiple times. (and YES- I had done my own due diligence by looking over my transfer docs.) I assumed my ADVISOR would be honest with me. I had to graduate a semester late because I had to take the class and the lab. 3. Advisors are never friendly, or make you feel welcome when you come into their office. They are extremely dismissive. MY TIP: Make older friends that can guide you through your classes, because tbh, the advisors are completely unreliable. MY TIP FOR NSM ADVISORS: Teach yourselves to be kinder to students, you have no clue what kind of stress we are going through. Teach yourself how to help students pick their courses. Teach yourself not to screw students over in their last semester. And lastly, if you do not like students in general, GET A DIFFERENT JOB. HOWEVER, other than that, I am very happy with the quality of my education. The experiences I had at UH were life-changing & I got to meet people from all parts of the world. NSM ADVISORS are terrible though!jank daddy
