12 Best Psychology Grad Programs In Detroit, MI (2022 Updated)

I must say that although this school does have it's enormous upsides with being a therapist/psychologist; it lacks in communication directly to the students. During the application process I was rarely contacted by an advisor/counselor to set up a potential interview and move on with the admission process. The first interview that was scheduled was ultimately cancelled on their end for unknown reasons, then the second interview was given on one date, and moved to a later one. After months of back-and-forth, I finally had my interview in April (months before school starts). After a pointless 6 hour long interview I was told I'd know if I was being admitted within the next 3.5 weeks. After 3.5 weeks of waiting for an email, they haven't told anyone until the last possible day before class enrollment starts. So now it is May, only a few months before I must figure out a housing situation, a loan situation, and a transportation situation. This school doesn't care about it's students as long as they receive a check that's inflated due to their ego. Although I am excited to go into a master's program, I am not excited for the torture I must face just to talk to someone there. Bad experience for the beginning.Humphrey Flannigan

This school is run by psychologist. In being such it provides the perfect environment to learn the theories and practices of psychology and therapy with a humanistic lense, which makes for a strong foundation in a good therapist! The professors and faculty are incredibly understanding, kind, and empathetic (like I said, run by psychologist). Not only will you learn about therapy and working with clients, but you'll also learn a lot about yourself. There are constant seminars and learning opportunities provided outside of classes (which some even offer continuing education credits) all for free. These range from play therapy, to presentations on multicultural psychology and much more! It is such a good feeling to go to a school that is completely focused on your area of interest and passion. The focus of the school is, first and foremost, the students, and providing an education that will make you a high quality therapist. I can honestly say I am very happy with my experience at MSP and I plan to go back for the PsyD in the near future. I'm enrolled in a Master's program of Architecture at UDM. The curriculum exactly fits my needs and considers all my previous education. Staff and students here are more like a family, that creates friendly environment especially for new students. Studios here are mixed of theoretical and practical approaches, which expands my experiences in both ways. The school shop has all kind of machines that help in doing models. The school has good ranking and reputation in the area. The dean is such a great person, also he is AIA Michigan president of year 2017. Since I got here, I have learned a lot and my skills increase especially in design and using computer softwares. The professors here are really nice and so helpful, they always have their doors opened for any questions or if you're seeking advise. I have been in contact with U of M when I was applying for a Master's program, I found them careless, kinda lost and unorganized, unlike UDM School of Architecture, they know exactly what're they doing and care about each single student in the school. School here gives students good chance to meet with professionals and big companies to help get them a co-op or and intern position once the student graduate.George Morkos

I do not recommend their clinical psychology masters program. The feedback from professors to students about being too “cheeky”, or “share more opinions” has nothing to do with the ability to practice clinically. The suggestion to share more thoughts/opinions in class if you want a letter of recommendation would not have gotten me a letter of recommendation! Apparently it was relevant if the professors liked you and your sense of humor rather than ones ability to provide therapy and conduct assessment. Overpriced for the value. There are plenty of places to get a degree from. I’ve found little from this program to be useful in clinical practice. The training I received following graduation was much more relevant to my practice than theories, having the DSM read in class, and learning to administer projective assessments. The level of diversity was appalling. The most diverse individual I can recall was a middle aged white male pursuing a second career. I would of received a better education in a third world country then what I received going here :/ I mean what can I say I had a constantly drunk professor, who every single class would be drinking out of his “big gulp” mug you could smell the alcohol on him. I also took a advanced senior leadership class where we actually drew with crayons what we wanted to be when we grow up. long story short save your money don’t go here go to a trade school or get a apprenticeship somewhere. This place will only leave you miserable and in debt my track scholarship helped with some of financials thank god.Mike

Wayne State is often overshadowed by U of M and Michigan State. That goes for athletics, academic prowess, and the fact that it is in the very center of Detroit, a city that is really trying to be that much better. And it is. The same can be said about Wayne State. Architecturally, this place is incredible, (a literal sandbox of the famed architect Minoru Yamasaki and worth the visit literally for his buildings and reflecting pool alone). The professors are overall great and push their students for excellence. Unfortunately it is also a place where educational inequality prevails, with a lot of students transferring out, mainly due to systemic inequality in high schools. It is getting better but it is a long road. The "4 year degree" hasn't been achieved by everyone due to having students often "catching up" with core classes. That is the reality. However, if you do make it through, it is worth it. I want to one day see Wayne State placed in conjunction with the big 2 schools in Michigan.Theodore Hynes

It’s a great! Division II school. However, NCAA Division Sports is not the end or beginning to an education. Contrary, Detroit seems to be summed up as oversimplified. The city and the people who go to Universities in Detroit, people of color generally speaking. People of color maybe depicted in a way- propaganda. I am in the new JASS (Journalism and Screen Studies Major) at UM-Dearborn. The profs are very helpful. They let current students print up to 200 free computer pages a semester. The UMD campus has an international atmosphere. Don't expect a wide open campus like Ann Arbor's this campus is compact. All current students can use the fitness facility as part of your enrollment. There is an indoor track, aerobic equipment, weights, racket ball courts, and fitness classes. It is in the athletic building and there is ice skating and basketball. It is supposed to open at 6 a.m. (sometimes they arrive at 6ish but I'm not rating the gym staff) Get in a workout before your class, they have showers and hair dryers. Bring a lock. Arrive very early for class because the parking lot gets full very fast and I'v only seen a shuttle bus once. UMD has just built brand new dorms, so you can get the full college experience. They are located on the Fairlane Mall grounds across Evergreen. I hope they build a cross ramp, because Evergreen drivers go very fast.Tish Tansil

I believe that though UMD may lack the sophistication and professionalism of Ann Arbor campus, it does a good job at providing students with direct attention and assistance from their faculty. It does need to improve infrastructure, international student diversity and should establish stricter entry regulation so that the student quality may improve.However this will not happen because they will not want to compete with their mother campus and secondly thought they have the budget to make the campus better, they will not provide A star quality for a minority student campus. It also needs to improve the catering service- there is no organic food options neither any healthy options- students are forced to eat from the unhealthy options. I think UMD can improve its quality standard and can ensure that at an affordable cost. It needs to pull up its socks, and try to strive for higher standards. However I will give it a thumbs up for student faculty relationships and and quality of faculty.xena athena

It's okay so far. I am still new here. The campus is nice along with the new dorms/lofts. The scheduling for classes is really confusing. Also, this is suppose to be a NO SMOKING campus, people smoke everyday. I just seen someway today walk by puffing away and someone yesterday right by everyone as we are walking, they don't even have the decency to go to a secluded corner. So far it's fine here besides those unfortunate things. (Warning: beware of bee's, there are bee's all over this campus and they will get right by your face).Moe Chamas

The professors here are the best teachers I’ve ever had and they are some of the nicest people I’ve ever known! They are great educators, and they do their job, give them a raise! But they are not the reason for the low rating, the college administration, welcome center, and security here are terrible, for example the welcome center is very slow and unorganized, and they don’t do their job properly, not to mention that the college is overly expensive! All the administration cares about is making money, they don’t care about the students. Even the security here is honestly terrible random people can just walk into campus without anyone knowing who they are or what their business is at the college.Rushid Tahiri

Was in a 4 class CAD certificate program. After 2 classes a few people dropped. They canceled the rest of the classes because they then weren't going to make a profit. No refund & couldn't even reach the department head. So stupid! Business based decision that's bad business. Supposed to care about students AND be a business too. Was great 20 years ago when I got my Associates degree. But back then anyone could speak to department head.ray chavez

The counseling here is garbage. I have been told so many different things when it came to academic advising so I never knew what the truth was. I've been incorrectly advised about drop out dates and now I owe them money. Only had one good teacher here. Don't go here and don't waste your time.Marielle Cianfarani

I am a current student of this institution and I have been nothing but completely happy here. The professors and administration are student focused. The driving purpose of the faculty is to see the students understand the Law and become complete practitioners (and pass the bar of course). If you want to attend a place where you are so much more than a number, where not only your professors will know you by first name, but so will the Dean, then this is the place for you.Stephanie Moore

The program here empowers the children's sense of self-esteem. It also strengthens their dispute resolution, social, and basic reading, writing, critical thinking, science and math skills. It is ethnically diverse. Parent participation is greatly encouraged. All of the staff members are approachable, smart, respectful, and friendly. There are great local field trips in the surrounding urban environment of Midtown Detroit. My child loves attending school here. The only downside is the parking which can be somewhat scarce.Sharon J

I have been lucky enough to be part of an aging brain study/experiment for several years! The staff members are very kind there. I even get paid a stipend for my time!! I hope these experiments helps in research that will help all folk in our aging populations!
