17 Best Psychology Grad Programs In Charlotte, NC (2022 Updated)

Let's be honest, there are good things and bad things to this school. While the department the major I have is very small and thus more personal with you, especially with advising, the bigger departments like business are very impersonal with you, and hold rather strict barrings on until you complete the, to be honest, useless general education the college forces on you, though that is the case anywhere in America. It is almost arrogant in how they dismiss the ideas and opinions of the students in favor of their own. They are also known for their excessive penny pinching. With the prices on campus being outrageous, they also hold strict rulings for housing and parking, giving you hefty bills if you mess up on even the slightest infraction. Overall, the grand and upcoming productions they are doing with the school, such as the football field and new dorms and buildings, do not help the general student population much. Now, with this said, there are good things to this place. For one, in smaller departments, you get a generally more personal and kinder attention to you and your college career. With my department at least, as long as you show the ability, they help you get the classes you want and need. Also, at least on campus, school spirit runs deep with the green and gold. There are more than enough events to bolster this said school patriotism, and can eventually come to rival other schools. Also, while some professors have a tendency to stuff beliefs down the student's throats, others can be thought inspiring, and can be interesting and even fun to go to classes sometimes. However, the lousy administration still lingers over these benefits, and hampers the overall quality of the school. If they fixed that problem, they would be a good school. However, with that said problem, I can only recommend it, as a current student, as a mediocre to slightly above average at best school to prospective students. To them, I would look at your options and see if you want to come here. I do not regret the choice of coming to this school, but I cannot ignore its blatant and crippling flaws.Drunk Farmer

If you have a lot of money, or you're a research student or engineer, you probably won't have a problem with this school. The school looks very nice on the outside, but as a student, I hated it. The dorms were god awful. Their elevators did not work on the first day of move in. At one point they did not have enough rooms in the highrises for the students, and had to house students in the commons rooms and blackout the windows. The Cafeteria food was always questionable. Cold and pretty unimaginative. Facilities and services always closed down early. There was hardly anything open on the weekends. Not to mention there is barely any means of going anywhere outside of campus if you don't have a car. Speaking of cars, parking services is ridiculous and incompetent. They wrote me up even when I had my parking tag right on the windshield, positioned properly where it was supposed to be, and another time I got a ticket after the semester had ended! This school just looks for ways to nickel and dime students. They're department chairs and coordinators are a bunch of fools who can't manage their jobs. And when they make mistakes, you are the one who will probably end up paying for it.Eric Williams

I went to UNCC back in the mid to late 90s. All I can say is if I had a time machine, I'd love to go back. I met several life-long friends that I continue to hang out with to this day. It's amazing how much the campus has changed over the years. The last time I was there (for the first football game) I almost got lost. I received a fine arts degree and have made a career out of digital printing and design. According to other reviews, people still like to go home on the weekends. That was also the case when I attended, but for the brave that stay around the school during the weekend, more power to you. That's where the fun is really at. Also, I'm hearing that students aren't attending the football games and the ones that are, tend to leave early. All I have to say to that is, just be glad you have a football team. We were so sports deprived back in the day, we would go to all the basketball and baseball games. Good times!Chad Milburn

*This review is in regards to their summer intern housing program* Queens must be the most incompetent organization I have ever dealt with. Of a group of five friends, they managed to "mistransfer" two of our contact information into their database – they messed up 40% of our applications! (Oh, and they they "misassigned" a third to the wrong room). While I wasn't too upset to learn that I lost my spot, even contacting them about my refund proved difficult since they don't answer their phone during business hours. If you're going to apply for summer intern housing at Queens, make sure to put in a few applications elsewhere.Alex Hoffman

The nursing program is bad. Less than half of the students that start at Queens for nursing end up graduating. Most people fail out of the program. You need at least a 77 to pass your classes and they will not help you if you’re 0.1 away from passing. If you fail a class, you can only retake it once and you will be delayed a semester because you can only take that one class. If you fail two classes, you’re out. It’s a very expensive school and not worth your time. They have a HESI exam that counts 10% of your grade and it’s really hard and you can’t study for it. MSN-CNL online degree program was an extraordinary graduate nursing program. The professors were top rate, requiring excellence at all times and were superb at instructing through an online platform supported by faculty specifically assigned to assist the full time working professional. This college has made a terrible impression. They got me admitted as a transfer student, and I have been preparing for the Fall session online, but to appear in person, and I just found out I missed the registration deadlines because student advising never got back to me. I took the new student orientation and the professor, just skimmed through all the info. There wasn't time for questions, and she cut it short by 30 minutes. It didn't even explain how to register online. I had been in communication and prepared for this session but didn't understand how to register so all the classes I had 'added to my schedule' weren't actually registered, and no one followed up with my questions. I thought I was registered, and even as I try to register now after the fact, it still says I need student advising which no one ever got back to be except for an email to say I already had everything set up. I am torn about this. Now I have to wait another session to get started?! NO! I will take my education somewhere where I can actually get assistance. This is such an emotional drag.Gabrielle Flores

I'm still currently a Johnson & Wales student. It is OKAY. The Chefs are geniuses and the culinary labs are AMAZING. BUT the academics are merely mediocre, making them not worth the price. Most of the textbooks are written by the school (understandably, since their degree programs are all very complex) and they crazy overcharge for them even by textbook standards. Since they are only available through the school, they take advantage of it. Most of the teachers however, do everything they can to keep you from having to pay for the books. Charlotte is a lovely place to go to school, but they did a terrible job placing the campus. It's MOSTLY a nice area, but after 4 o'clock it gets pretty sketchy. In the year and a half that I have been here, they have changed the curriculum four different times. Most of the changes are fine and don't really effect my everyday. The dorms, are horrifying. The dining hall gave everyone in my year food poisoning at least three times. The apartment style dorms are full of water damage that the school claims to have dealt with, but our carpet is still bubbled up a foot every few steps we take and all of our cabinets smell like mold. BUT they ARE currently getting money together to start building new apartment style dorms. Construction is supposed to start in 2018 (they're currently working on buying the building from the city). Unfortunately since this is technically a remote campus of the Providence school, everything has to go through them before coming to us. They are stuck in the dark ages. They use paper for all their files and also every test, essay, and request. Things get lost all the time and a lot gets lost over the communications between campuses, but that's not charlotte JWU's fault. SUMMARY: Dorms suck, food is poison. Culinary classes are great, academics probably aren't worth the money. They're fixing the dorm situation, but won't be done before I graduate. Providence Campus is the worst.Sage WolfeZogg

I am currently attending this school and it's pretty fun. Charlotte is a beautiful area, but the location of campus is placed strangely. There's always a lot of construction around, but I don't blame the school for that. I'm in baking and pastry and the chefs and students are mostly positive while in class though they seem like they expect so much more out of the students who don't know half the stuff we're being taught. Academics is okay, but some teachers treat the students poorly. When it comes to academics, the student DO know stuff and some teachers treat students like they are clueless five year-olds. I'd say the school is too expensive for what it gives us. I'll be spending years in student loan debt after maybe a bachelor's degree. The food in the cafeteria is horrible for a culinary school. They try to make things fancy and just end up making it more gross. The dorm halls always smell like weed. The RAs don't care and are students as well so if you have a problem with someone, they pick sides. CVT isn't too bad, which is where I'm living next year. I love this school and I was excited to come, but it feels like they're making no effort for any of their students that are paying so much to be here.Ashley Evans

The school is okay as a whole but I'm here to bring everyone's attention to the food. First off they have served raw chicken to us multiple times and then they pick through the meat to choose the ones who arent cooked leaving the rest of the now contaminated meat behind for us to eat. This food has made me and others sick on more than one occasion now. Not to mention the people working down there are rude, wearing earbuds so they cant hear us. How is this acceptable we pay good money to be here but yet they act like the world is crashing down if we ask them to put things out so we can get the food. I've been seeing Greg for nearly a year and he's a wonderful assistant on my road to understanding what's been going on in my life. He's attentive, does his research, and knows me in and out; rarely does he need to reference his notes to know exactly what I'm referring to when I'm describing my past. He's both warm and straight-forward at the same time. I can't imagine seeing anyone else. I honestly can't do him justice in this small review. He even allowed me to bring my wife in for her to give her feedback while maintaining strict professionalism in regards to my confidential information. I would highly recommend him to nearly anyone regardless of the issues you're dealing with. His approach is broad and seems to be able to be applied to nearly anything. He walks me through my own thought processes and allows me to find my own answers while providing guidance, reassurance, and greater insight into whatever we're talking through. I can't say enough about Greg. He is someone that is genuinely passionate about what he does and is someone that wants you to get the most out of your sessions. I would strongly recommend him to anyone in the Charlotte area of any age that might be seeking help or is still hesitant about seeking counseling. As a former client of almost two years I can say that I've benefitted greatly from meeting with Greg, not only because of the sessions themselves but how I've applied what I've learned in the sessions into everyday life. I found Greg after having a bad experience with another practice. Greg has helped me start thinking in a new positive way and has helped me though a few difficult times. Greg doesn't just tell you what to do, he really makes you think about it and guides you to discover things on your own. he is very friendly and down to earth and his method works really well. He is able to help guide you to where you want to be and strives to make you a better person. Greg doesnt hand you fish…he teaches you how to fish so you can learn how to better yourself. The following has been edited after receiving feedback and more information from both Matt and Kim from Matone Counseling. I personally have had good experiences with two separate counselors here, one of which I am still seeing. All processes are smooth for me, and I've had no issues. However, I would like to encourage any adults who are seeking an autism diagnosis to ask their psychologist if they have expertise on how autism presents from people who are actually autistic. Recently had an adult friend who has been dealing with disabling autistic burnout for a couple years be told that he is not autistic even though he exhibits all of the DSM criteria because autistic people can't be self-aware of their traits. There was also not an initial clarity about the pricing of the assessment even though this friend is unemployed and was having to pay out of pocket (I helped them). If you are seeking an assessment, ask about their sliding scale options. The client didn't know this was a possibility in the testing realm. I will note that Matone refunded a good portion of the fee after I posted on here, so I appreciate that generosity. This friend needs to be able to apply for disability income due to an inability to function in social and work environments. This is why they wanted to get an assessment. As a therapist in the Charlotte area, I have heard only good things about Matone, so I am the one who encouraged that he go to them for an assessment. But I was disheartened at what he was told by the psychologist, and he felt very discouraged as well. I mentioned before that I felt this service was rendered without competent experience, because a PhD doesn't make you automatically an expert on everything, and autistic masking should be taken heavily into consideration for any autistic adult. As a clinical social worker, my belief is that a client is the expert of their own experience, and I understand that testing is unable to consider this fully, so that's unfortunate. Matone is obviously competent at testing many things, using all the evidence-based procedures as noted in the comment below, or they wouldn't have such a good reputation. But going off of my friend's experience, I am not sure if they are as competent in the realm of adult autism. This was only one experience, but I think it's important to note because they are so lauded and have great reputations. I'm hopeful that they will work on improving their adult autism testing services and possibly adding obvious accommodations. Matt let me know that you can ask for a second opinion from the clinical director at no charge if you disagree with your testing results, so that's great. Apparently, they could have had me offer my input as well, but I had no idea this was an option, because the psychologist only talked to the client's mom. I would not have expected these things to be a possibility if he had not told me. I think it's important to note that my friend felt that once the psychologist gave their opinion on his results, there was no point in disputing it. Autistic adults often have difficulty expressing themselves or advocating for themselves when specific, direct accommodations aren't offered. If someone comes to you saying they believe they're autistic, and you're a professional, you need to understand how to better communicate with them and inform them of everything. My entire life I have always struggled with communicating to others , especially psychiatrists and psychologists. As a elementary school teacher, I work with a lot of psychologists and have never had such a good experience. My daughter is very shy and was very anxious about getting testing done. She met Dr. Long and warmed up quickly. Dr. Long put her at ease by making the testing seem like fun. My daughter didn’t even mind going back to finish. I was so thankful that we had this experience and Dr. Long helped us see all of my daughters strengths. Dr. Long was so supportive and helped us work with the school system.Kerry W

The only reason this establishment is getting 3 stars is because of Dr. Forbes being an outstanding and caring professional, otherwise I would give 1 star for my most recent experience. While Dr. Forbes is a one of a kind Psychologist that I had seen several times, I touched base with the office for a new patient appointment with Dr. Jennifer Fights to explore EMDR specifically which Dr. Forbes does not offer. I was then accepted and scheduled with Dr. Jennifer Fights and put on her very busy schedule with a new patient appointment a few months down the road. I did have to reschedule once due to a scheduling conflict on my end however I just received an email (not even a phone call) from the front office associate, Jade, stating that Dr. Jennifer Fights said she could no longer see me because I didn't fit Dr. Fights criteria. I'm truly not sure why I don't given that I specifically needed to see her regarding PTSD, which EMDR is used for, that I've been sadly dealing with and is something that Dr. Jennifer Fights specializes in. I'm also not sure why I was first accepted and then denied by this provider, while I've waited months to see her. Again, if it wasn't for Dr. Forbes Base Cognitive Behavioral would get one star for how I was treated and dealt with. This is supposed to be a place that cares for the mental health of others but apparently they just toss clients to the side at their convenience.Dom

My partner loves Dr. Forbes and for that reason she is great in my book. The women who answer the phone are not. Things are stressful and I understand you guys are busy but imagine how the people calling in feel. I know HIPAA laws, I asked a general question. LIsa helped set my son on a path to life long success. At age 6, my son was diagnosed with severe anxiety. He was afraid to on new people which would prevent him from participating in a wide range of actives – everything from meeting new people to something as mundane as going to the park. Lisa's practice focused on how to make him successful by teaching him coping strategies that were age appropriate instead of trying to figure out why he was that way. By doing that we side stepped all the long drudgery of analysis and moved into the corrective action phase. This took all of about 6 months to course correct. Over the years, if there is a particular issue, we return to Lisa and in short order my son overcomes or deals with the issue. He's now 14, about to go off to boarding school and while he'll never be the life of the party, he's no long afraid of everything and will be successful in life. My daughters enjoyed the guided tour with Daniel from Admissions. They learned a lot (and so did I)…Gaming & Gaming Management is a thing! By thing, I mean a minor. We loved the intimate size of the school, the friendly students who said hello along the way, and the family feel between staff. I appreciate a professor from New Sciences taking a few moments to offer some advice about taking courses that allow students to have options. The museum inside of the library was one of my favorite things! Love that new students get iPad and passports. This school seems to really be invested in the future of their students.Brianna Carter

Some of the staff is great with telling you what you want to hear. But they are not good with helping with nothing you literally have to call 40 times before you get help. The school is falling apart it smells like mildew. I cried when I had to leave my son.. The fact I was going home to a better place to sleep at night. The ceiling falling in in dorm room.. I felt very safe with dr. Swaney. He made a point to talk about himself & the practice which put my nerves at ease & allowed me to feel like I could talk about things that I don’t like bringing up. I feel like he understood my needs & main concerns & provided a plan of action with medication & continuing appointments with the possibility of referrals to a therapist to add to my care plan. I greatly appreciated the abundance of information. The ladies at the front were very kind, & even though they were running a bit behind I didn’t mind at all. Dr. Wallace charged my 20 year son $190 for a missed visit (first and only one). Apparently, it is up to each physician individually as to how much to charge for a missed visit–this is the full amount. Mind you, my son was in the middle of a mental health crisis (hence needing the services of a psychiatrist), so this seems egregious in my opinion. I definitely get the need to recover some money for missed visits, and I would guess that in this field, the need is even greater than in some specialties. However, $190 is beyond ridiculous. It doesn't feel as if this doctor is rooting for my kid with this one.Renn Carroll

Chandler Perry is easily the best, most caring and easy to talk to psychiatrist I've ever had. Everyone should be so lucky as to have her as their psychiatrist. If she left the practice I'd go with her is how good she is. No lie she rocks it like a super star ✨⭐✨ To me all these bad reviews sound like sour grapes. I came here with my significant other for couple's counseling and found the entire experience very bizarre. We met with Louise Biller who was pleasant and kind, but allowed her personal religious beliefs to invade our session and change how comfortable we felt with sharing the truth about our lives. During our initial evaluation, she took more interest in "diagnosing" (singling out) my significant other than working with the two of us as a couple. During our second visit, she sat in her chair and just stared at us the entire time, while he and I self-diagnosed ourselves because of the awkward silence she refused to fill. Overall, it was a complete waste of our time and money, and I cannot recommend this place for individuals who are looking for help. I came here a few times. The staff were kind. But the therapist I was seeing, Myriam Rabaste, was extremely distant for every session. Having distance from your patients is good, but having a full wall between you isn't helpful. It felt as if there were no genuine reactions, just blandness. I won't be coming back. EDIT 3 weeks later, 7/24 I debated putting this in my original review, but considering that people who are very vulnerable come here for help, I figure that I should warn about this. The office staff was horrible. I paid out of pocket for an ADHD evaluation for my daughter because they were recommended. The evaluation was done by the doctor in a timely manner. However, the office staff never informed me it was ready. I sent emails and left messages that were never returned. Each time I called, I was sent to voicemail. Finally, I offered to pick it up in person since they were incapable of forwarding it to my doctor. I was then lied to and told it was faxed that morning when it was not. It finally arrived hours later at my doctor after they called again and I threatened to send my husband.Paulette Seifert

We came to Southeast Psych with the hope of Dr. Gaskill helping our child who has struggled this past year with his Autism. After our 1st appointment our second was scheduled and we received a call that same day saying Dr. Gaskill had a scheduling conflict even though we already took time off from work. We rs the appointment to another day and guess what…again a call from his office saying he needed to cancel? I was understandably upset and requested to hear from Dr. Gaskill….over a week and finally an email that was not remorseful. When asked if our next 2 appointments could be compensated since he missed them he declined. Paying $250 to meet with him in the hopes of him helping a struggling child and then to be cancelled on and no courtesy of anything? $250 is obviously more important than helping.Orhan Sarabi

The therapists here are not only up to date on the most cutting edge psychology practices, it's also a very relaxed atmosphere so my clients feel at ease. Dr. Gaskill was a great blessing to my son with Asperger's! He totally understood what he was going through! He encouraged him to take one-day-at-a-time and did not judge him.
