18 Best Paramedic Programs In Birmingham, AL (2022 Updated)

I've been going back and forth with the Cashier's Office today because they are in charge of distributing pell grant refund checks at the *beginning of the semester. It's now March and I have recieved anything because.no one told me until last week that if you have a second term split class that you won't see the check until AFTER that class starts. Even then no one ever answered.my questions until today when I had.to go see the Dean of Students. She wasn't in so they brought in the Financial aid person (should have been done since January). Long story short, that person told me to drop my class since it would be easier for them. I've had nothing but bad experiences at Shelton and it's no wonder that not many people after the CC dont continue their education. Literally the worst school ever. The advisors do absolutely nothing to help you. When you call they just tell you what you want to hear and don't help at all. I called last week to make sure everything was in order for me to sign up for classes and I was told yes. This morning I go to sign up and there is a hold on my account keeping from signing up. The admissions staff is inconsiderate and rude. No one really wanted to help me with any questions. This school doesn't accept outside loans but don't offer additional financial assistance to those who less fortunate or don't stay at home with mom and dad. This school is about money to graduate. I went to the Wadley Campus, and it was everything that it promised. Class sizes were reasonable, 15-25 people depending on the subject, no lecture halls of 200 here. The instructors cared that you understood the material and on multiple occasions I had instructors go out of their way to help me when I needed it. Instructors understand being an adult and having adult problems like kids and mandatory overtime getting in the way of classes occasionally. I needed to visit the Opelika campus a time or two, and they are bigger than Wadley, but I got the impression that they were more heavily trafficked, too. The original campus is in Wadley, my grandmother(!) got her teaching degree there when she still had to teach 3 grades in a one-room schoolhouse. However, the Wadley campus was rebuilt five or six years ago, and is -gorgeous-, with a friendly community that's sort of grown up around the college. They DO offer financial aid in the form of both Pell Grants and Stafford/Perkins loans, and the Wadley campus has dorms as well. To the other posters: You -should've- known only original transcripts records-office-to-records-office would be accepted, that's the way every college does it. Also, if you didn't feel part of the community in Opelika, it may be something about that campus which is in direct competition with Auburn and located along the highway. Wadley is idyllic and friendly in the middle of a rural county with very little else in town besides the college. I recommend it to anyone who asks, and intend to send my daughter here one day.Jonathan Gregg

This school is ridiculous. After mailing all transcripts and sending teas scores, I go for the mandatory info session for nursing. I get there and find out that my transcripts cannot be accepted because although they were official they were mailed to me first. So I asked for them back, only to find out they had been opened so are no longer official. But she said the envelope said issues to student. Also my high school transcripts could not be accepted because although they were office they did not come directly from the high school, nailed to student first. I graduated in 2008 and Fulton County has a records office, they wont come from the high school once the next school year starts. Here's the kicker, I submitted all documents 6 weeks ago and never got notice about an issue and the deadline for nursing admission is today, in an hour.. Annndddd I drove from Atlanta. Andddd the dean refused to talk to me. And the main campus told me I should know better being that I already have a degree. Sooo yes, with transcript fees, mailing cost and gas I've thrown away 102$. It's a community college. What can you really expect from a public funded college in the state of Alabama with a grand total of a few thousand students? What you pay for is what you get, teachers and administrators compensated at a social worker rate, most likely as just some extra work as a side job. On that note, the campus itself is aesthetically pleasing and classroom sizes are small for optimum learning. Some teachers are superb, some are not, let not the difficulty of the class be the decider of proffesor quality but with how much more knowledge and better understanding you walk away with.Howell Scott

It's a cheap college and a good start to a college career. The financial aid office and basically anything coming from the Bailey Center is a nightmare to deal with. 95% of the time, they had no idea what I was talking about. And I just about had a come apart on multiple occasions with them. Make sure to hound them when you ask for your transcripts, it took them months for them to give me my transcripts. The bookstore is pretty outrageous in its pricing. Also, coming from someone who went to a challenging school system, the work was usually not hard. In fact, I am terrible with math, but I breezed through 75% of my first math class within two weeks at Wallace. Most of the facilities are updated except the men's dorms, theatre, and the computer science center, which are not well taken care of. Missing floor and ceiling tiles, parking lots in need of repaving. Almost all of the professors are great and actually care about your progress.Voltaire Vinci

Great school, received my Associates and transferred afterwards to UAH. Really sweet people. If you live far away be prepared to only communicate in-person for Financial Aid and Admissions. It's very difficult to reach people by phone or email but once you walk in (unless it's right before the semester starts) there is usually no line and a short wait to talk to the right people. Also, this school is known for its nursing program and they take great pride in that. Be aware that the course load for this major is at university-level (minimum). Seriously, it is very aggressive but the job placement and license pass-rates are stellar. I enjoyed the faculty at this campus, especially in math. I took business classes too, and most of those instructors were super friendly and easy to follow. It was great! My son and I went there today to get him settled in, prior to classes starting on the 19th. The campus is small. The grounds and buildings are in good upkeep. His dorm room was nice and fairly clean and he seems to have been blessed with a friendly roommate. In fact, all of the people we met thus far on campus were very personable. Other than the three and a half hours drive there and back the overall experience was great! I pray that my son is surrounded by only the best people who wish him no harm and will only help him along this path he chose to pursue his goals. Thank God we made it safely there, especially back, considering the storm we are having. God's Blessings to all of you.L Erkins

I'm a new graduate of the CCMA program that Fortis offers . I also graduated from the Cosmetology school. I really enjoyed my experience both times . The instructors are awesome and are ready to teach you and get you ready for the field you are training for. The office staff is ready to answer any and all questions you have. The Career Services department is on point and stick with you all the way through from beginning to graduation and even after that to make sure you have placement in your new career. I hope everyone that thinks about going to Fortis of Mobile doesn't hesitate cause if so you will be missing out on a great opportunity. Hope you make the right choice like I did.Vitiated (Vitiated)

This school is SO unorganized! I went here for 1 year and the teachers were nice but i never fully LEARNED how to do anything until it was time for externs. My whole college experience was books that’s it! I was supposed too graduate early since I finished all my hours for externship but they kept making excuses “oh we aren’t in school this week”, “the dean is on pto right now so you’ll have to wait”, etc.! They say they will help with getting you an extern site and even make sure you learning this and that before they send you off but they don’t. Herzing university is a nonprofit college and this is not the route to go. State and Community college are the best route to go very affordable. This school is not ACEN ACCREDITED. They will lie just to get you in because the worker get paid through your loans. I visit Birmingham campus and the Campus was the nasty, disgusting and the advisor are very unprofessional. I never seen an adviser dress in pant and a tshirt. Stay away from Tobias Roberts and Mrs Jackson they are unprofessional advisers. It don't even look like a college. I went to Alabama, Fire college for a week long fire officer for class. The campus is immaculately, manicured, and very well-kept with zero trash and nothing out of place. The staff and instructors are very friendly and will make every effort to ensure that the student learns the materials that they need to know the better themselves and the fire service.Gray Young

There needs to be alternating pathways for the nursing admission program. Many technical colleges and community colleges are accepting TEAS, HESI A2, and Accuplacer scores as another option besides ACT score of 18 because many students are graduating with post-secondary degrees in another healthcare field and returning back to local community colleges and technical due to a very competitive job market. I am post- secondary graduate myself in another healthcare field with Associate of Applied Science Degrees in Medical Office Technology and Medical Billing & Coding Technology and Bachelor of Business Administration concentration in Healthcare Administration, but I have to complete additional training in Pharmacy Technician or Medical Assistant because I do not have any employment history. Yeah, many people said that online system is terrible. I partially agree with that, i was also someone who try ing to make an enrollment on online. And I was also suffered by SUSCC online system. My experience was TERRIBLE HERE. Getting them to send transcripts, setting up financial aid, or anything that requires work, takes them FOREVER. They do everything last minute. If You call and ask for assistance one person will tell you to do one thing and another person will tell you something different. I almost couldn’t even start school back to back years because of them. Unless you plan on having to call, email, and go up there and harass them, nothing will be done and you’ll be stuck having to go to school the next semester & they’ll have no sympathy about that happening to you either.Joshua Griffin

THIS COLLEGE PRESIDENT, THE DIRECTOR OF ALLIED HEALTH SCIENCES, AND THE DIRECTOR OF MLT (Medical Laboratory Technology) AND WERE ALL THE OTHER MLT TEACHERS WERE ALL, CROOKED, CRUEL, AND CORRUPT IN THERE DEALINGS WITH ME AS A STUDENT! THEY HAD TOTAL CONTEMPT FOR AND HAD ABSOLUTELY NO RESPECT FOR ME AS A STUDENT! I PASSED ALL BUT ONE REVIEW COURSE WHERE THE TEACHER WAS ALLOWING THE STUDENTS TO CHEAT WITH EACH OTHER. BECAUSE HE WAS LETTING THE OTHER STUDENTS CHEAT ON THE LAB REVIEW EXAMS, THEY ALL MADE GOOD GRADES SO HE (TEACHER) DIDN'T HAVE TO SCALE THE GRADES. THEY TOOK MY MONEY AND FLUNKED ME OUT OF THE MLT PROGRAM AND LAUGHED ABOUT IT! FOR THEM IT IS ALL ABOUT GETTING YOUR MONEY! THEY ALL STICK TOGETHER AGAINST THE STUDENTS! IT IS A GOOD OLD BOY CLUB! IF THE MLT DIRECTOR DECIDES SHE DOES NOT LIKE YOU, SHE WILL LET YOU GET ALL THE WAY TO THE END OF THE PROGRAM, LET YOU SPEND ALL OF YOUR MONEY AND THEN FAIL YOU AND BLOCK YOU FROM PASSING AND LAUGH ABOUT IT! I attended a CDL refresher course here. It was a great experience for me. The tarchers are excellent and extremely knowledgeable in their field. They use well maintained clean and safe equipment and are willing to do whatever it takes to get you where you need to be. The prices were beyond reasonable 1/5 of the price of their closest competitor and much better instruction. Could not have chose a better school to attend.chris cline

She was very rude and impatient, and that is NO way to treat a potential student! I was very polite and had a few questions, like every potential student does. I wish people wouldn't leave reviews about their ambulance experience on the SCHOOL'S PAGE. The school does not control the ambulance division. That's a completely different department. The Grady EMS academy is outstanding and if you know what's good for you then you would go here. The instructors are experienced Paramedics and the hands on experience is like no other. Please, if you are not having a high risk pregnancy, DO NOT HAVE YOUR BABY HERE! I feel like if I did not leave when I did, I would be dead. I was admitted with pre-eclampsia. Now, my nurses on the maternity unit were good and so were the nurses on the neonatal unit. My baby is biracial, and one of the neonatal nurses did not believe that my son was my son. She said are you sure you are here for that baby…. But that's another story. While on the maternity unit, a patient care tech charted my blood pressure as normal and did not actually check my blood pressure. SHE FALSIFIED MY BLOOD PRESSURE! DO YOU KNOW HOW DANGEROUS THAT IS ON A PRE-ECLAMPSIA PATIENT!!! I emailed Terri Poe, the chief nursing officer, and the nurse manager for that unit. No one EVER called me to follow up with me. The charge nurse offered me a parking pass, which is ridiculous. Bottom line DO NOT HAVE YOUR BABY HERE……Jennifer Dean

Went there for the first time ever on 1/25/21. I babysit 3 boys 5, 3 & 1yr old brothers. The youngest ones both have medical issues & I went with their mom to take them for a checkup. When I say that I've never seen a more caring staff, and I mean from the cafeteria workers to desk clerks to Dr's….I mean it! The nurses & physicians (sincerely) pay attention to *every word you say to them & every question you ask! It's extremely apparent how much they care about their patients and that's hard to find anywhere!!! I love these kids as if they were my own & I'm so happy that they are in such loving, capable hands❤Holli Sanders

The best hospital I've ever been to. The staff is awesome and the bedside manner is great. They make you comfortable knowing that you're probably going to be there for some time that it being a critical hospital. The love they give is an understatement. If I was rich I would tip the doctors, nurses, techs, etc. for my gratitude.If don't nobody else realize there job I do and I salute them to the fullest. They are definitely Heroes. Experience is good if you don't count the rude and ill-mannered administrators. You have to pretty much bend down and kiss their behinds to get a smile, or "you're welcomed" out of them. This is the absolute worst college I've ever seen. They have constantly lost my paperwork over the 2 semesters that I went there and now that I am transferring out of there to Wallace State Community College they have put a hold on my student account with them which is blocking them from sending a final transcript to Wallace State after I'd already requested that they send a transcript after spring grades were posted to it and they ignored the check mark on the send at the end of term and sent Wallace an incomplete transcript. I already know what the hold is for because they just sent me a college exit financial aid paperwork as if I'm not going to be going to college at all anymore even though their aware of me transferring out because of already sending Wallace State a transcript once. It seems their trying to block me from getting a complete education from another higher quality college.Allen Norris

I have been a student here for the past 3 years and am graduating next semester with an associate's in science. I love Jefferson State. Professors here are absolutely amazing all around. As educators, mentors, as guidance, and are impressively over qualified honestly. If going to grad school I suggest doing all prerequisites here before hand. You will be better prepared. A great place to start working towards a brighter future. Offers great scheduling and support from staff and professors. The nursing program is by far one of the best in the state. I major in pre-pharmacy and will be transferring next year to grad school. All of my prerequisites were available and are transferrable. Financial Aid and Advisor department is also great. If you aren't sure about starting college, just do it. Do it here. You won't regret it.Jackie Pinon

An excellent school. Clean, friendly, professional environment. My Only problem, along with MANY OTHERS, Ms. G. She taught chemistry & enjoyed "hearing herself talk ". Apparently she was so very "stacked"with degrees, she wanted to make everyone suffer by intentionally making the course harder than it needed to be. I saw her as a trickster more so than a teacher. I have never met a teacher who wanted students to fail as much as she did. A little control went WAY too far for her. Other than her, it was all knuckling down studying hard to be the best registered nurse I could be. Worst institution! I attended here recently and they were no help at all! The office is full of teenagers that don't know what they're doing. The girl at the front desk seems like she doesn't know a single thing. The adults in the office are just as bad. No help in making schedules. Lost my applications several times. I called Central Alabama Community College, to request information for enrolling my grandson into the GED classes. I was talked to like white trash!!! Never got not one straight answer. The lady wouldn't even give me an idea of how much the GED test would cost. If I was CACC, I believe I'd do a better job of hiring competent people to answer the phone.Mary Maxwell
