For a school that promotes women's strength and diversity, I am appalled to see that racism for the current students is still rampant. For those women to feel afraid and not be able to come forward and speak against it, is abhorrent. Do better. How can you allow for advisor's and students alike to treat others like that? Do better, it's 2022. Also, as I toured, I went with a family member. It was assumed I was a single mother and between the families who toured my "daughter" and I were skipped over for some questions while the larger families with relatives were asked more. I find this to be extremely telling along with the racism that this would not be a school I'd want my daughter or anyone's daughter to attend until they can work on their biases. It's also a little alarming they don't talk about what grants or how much anything is until you've been "admitted." And even more so when you find reviews elsewhere that state that they mess with tuition, or charge more without letting people know. For a school that charges so much, the environment seemed lacking. Also the tour guide mentioned something about being able to help children with autism, in a way that makes me feel like it's meant for others to feel good and not benefit the children. The approach in which it was talked about could have been more tasteful. Also how can you give a tour and not know anything about any of the degrees offered there? Little disappointing. In short: send your daughters elsewhere. This school has many improvements to make.E C

I have an Odd and an Even daughter and we were absolutely thrilled with Meredith! I always felt my daughters were safe there and never felt uneasy about leaving them there. Everyone from the President to the Maintenance staff to all of the Professors made us feel they genuinely wanted our daughters as students and not just our checkbook. Both of my girls really enjoyed their time there and I would recommend it to any prospective student to at least visit, It isn't for everyone but both of my girls were very pleased with the education they received.Brian Smith

Grad from several years back. Extremely few adequate professors/ administrators, majority incorporate liberal indoctrination into curriculum. Way too expensive , and college caters mostly to those who live on campus. The job I am currently employed at pays more than the jobs my degree is for. Be smart and do the research to look for a much less expensive college , and consult multiple sources before getting a degree that allows you limited career opportunities. So here's my Wake Tech story. I secured financial aid and then enrolled into Wake Tech as a full-time student. And then the financial aide office attempted to cut my much-needed aid twice, the first time on the Friday before my classes were to begin and then the second time was the following Monday via email when I was literally 4/5 the way through the commute from Fayetteville to Raleigh to attend my first day of classes, causing me to turn around and head back home. And another thing: maybe it's just me — perhaps I missed something?–however it seems that Wake Tech expects new students to simply show up and know what to do? Nothing's explained, nearly none of the stuff that I needed to know to get started was covered during the online orientation that new students are required to complete nor were we given any booklet or the like to explain how stuff works . But let's rewind a bit. After securing financial aid, enrolling and completing online orientation….I remained clueless. So thereafter I spent about a week commuting back and forth between Fayetteville and South campus in an effort to complete registration and get everything else taken care of. I did so under the assumption that I'd get stuff figured out if only I'd drive up there and speak to Wake Tech face to face–but not so . During this process I asked advisors and other staff a variety of questions only to be told conflicting info and advice thereby increasing my confusion. And then I went to the bookstore where I learned that some of the books that I needed were out of stock and that notebooks cost $8. So I left without my books. I did however attempt to attend classes first day of semester, as mentioned above, but then received that email from the financial aid office– had that not happened I would have went to school and maybe things would have turned out differently. I did receive another email from someone else at Wake Tech telling me that the email from financial aid threatening to reduce my aid the 2nd time was a mistake and that I'm covered…but unfortunately I've already missed a week of school so I guess I'm out. Very depressing as Wake Tech is the closest college offering a full curriculum on substance abuse/addiction counseling and that's what I want to do. But, it is what it is .Frank A

You remember when the pandemic started, and everyone had to start learning how to use computers? Now imagine, a bunch of teachers, creating online courses from scratch with no help. ITS A DISASTER. Its like NO ONE set a criteria for how the classes should follow a general structure, so that students aren't spending the first 2 weeks of every new class trying to figure out what is what. Its like no one showed them, "this is the gold standard"… this is what a well put together black board class looks like. The online courses are archaic. (Dr. Frear, I complained about some things and I am sorry. After seeing what else is our there( summer 2022), HOLY MOLY. Your blackboard set up is the least confusing and was by far, the best thing I have seen yet) Instructors use blackboard, not as a classroom but as a file folder system. Instead of using the platform, they made it so that every thing is word documents and or files you have to download when they could have just simply used the actual platform. I should only be downloading PowerPoint slides, worksheets, homework, etc. Not opening a document to read something you could have made a video and "instructed" us or copy and pasted to the platform. Does anyone know the definition of a syllabus there? It should be all encompassing. I shouldn't have to read 5 documents to figure out how I will be graded, what I will be graded on, the rules, the expectations, which books I need to buy. If the department has a syllabus, I'm pretty sure you are supposed to take that document and incorporate it into your own, at the very least create an addendum/appendix. My Grades should clearly have due dates, weighted totals, and all of the grade-able items at the start of the class. There should be no, imagining what my grade is at any given moment.Buttercups

I’ve spent 29 years teaching at Wake Tech and have taken a number of classes here too. I know what it’s like at Wake and I am telling the unvarnished truth about it. I’m retiring soon so it’s not about getting a promotion! Generally speaking the facilities, faculty and quality of education are really very good – in addition the price is still reasonable. Don’t be conned by private educational facilities that promise you a “great job” after graduation and then put you in a low end, minimum wage job where you can’t even afford to pay off your pricey school loans (this happened to a friend of mine). Go to WT and get a better education for a fraction of the cost – you will leave with real skills and THAT’S how you get a job – with knowledge. Plus Wake has a solid reputation with employers. Yes, there are aspects of the school that are unfortunate – I hear complaints from my students, and there are a number of policies that drive the faculty crazy too – much of it is due to the typical bureaucracy that seems inevitable with very large institutions. Is it really better elsewhere? Maybe. Maybe not. Nonetheless, if you go with the sincere desire and motivation to learn, and you treat your teachers and fellow students with respect – you will be supported by all and do well. The ILC really is a remarkable facility and is intended to help struggling students succeed. When it comes to the financial aid office I hear the best approach is to fill out ALL the paperwork that is required COMPLETELY and ON TIME. I really hit the jackpot with this therapy location. They've been super healthy through any kinds of miscommunication I've had, or any troubles through scheduling or therapy. Which is honestly one of the first things that drew me into these therapy sessions. And once I started going, I was hooked. I got lucky with my therapist on my first real attempt, and really had a connection with her. This isn't my first time in therapy. Due to a series of unfortunate circumstances, I've had about 5 or 6 therapists throughout my years. We never quite… clicked? Either I felt like I was on a different wavelength than them, or I felt like we were speaking in two completely different languages. It was odd, and honestly pretty demoralizing. Like I wouldn't be able to find the hip that all of us reading and writing reviews so dearly deserve. I was slow to trust and slow to share with my therapist at first, but after a while and given proper room to open up and talk, I felt like I really connected with her and was able to communicate much more openly than I have been able to before. Shine Chauhan has been a fantastic therapist and really allows me to speak my mind and heart. I don't feel like I need to fit into some sort of box when I talk to her, and I'm not worried about being judged from an outside point of view. She's professional and patient, and knows when to give a little bit of distance in our talks, which admittedly I need every now and again. I can't say that every therapist is going to be the correct one for you. We're all such complex and amazing people, and we're bound to find some people we don't mesh well with before we find a proper solution. But I can say that Thriveworks definitely does seem to care, and while I haven't tried any of their other therapists, I know my therapist does. So why 4 stars? Why not 5? My experience with Thriveworks has been fantastic. From scheduling, to talking, to payment options and insurance coverage. It's been fantastic to me. Due to it being such a great experience, I recommended two loved ones to Thriveworks and therapy with them. While one had an overall positive experience, the other went through a mess of insurance and payment walls. I'll be honest, when they told me about that I couldn't believe it, everything had gone so smoothly for me. I guess I'll have to say your mileage MAY vary. This is my review though, so I try not to let it affect my score TOO much. I would still recommend them again in a heartbeat!Andy Ortiz

I am extremely upset with this clinic. I had 4 scheduled appointments to which I received written confirmation via email and the clinician's no called no showed all 4 appointments. I believe it has something to do with Thriveworks technology as this was between 2 different therapists and locations and I don't believe that's very likely that 2 therapists would no call no show a patient. After the first missed appointment which was virtual I was told the clinical director would be reaching out. No one ever reached out. Then I rescheduled for an in person session since they said the first one was missed because the clinician only does in person therapy (even though they scheduled me for a virtual appointment and even sent me a confirmation email with a link to the waiting room). The in person session was also no called no showed and I sat in the waiting room for 25 minutes before calling the Thriveworks number. They were shocked because they could see my confirmed appointment in their system. Once again I was told someone would reach out – no one ever did. I then decided to switch clinicians and accepted a virtual appointment with a clinician out of Charlotte. I received email confirmation with a link to the waiting room for this appointment. Again, no one ever showed up. I called and was told the same thing – that someone would reach out. Again, no one did. I gave it one last try and rescheduled with the coordinator over the phone, a virtual appointment. The same exact thing happened but when I called this time the coordinator told me basically nothing else could be done because all of the required messages had already been distributed to the appropriate people. I was shocked and furious. Keep in mind, I was also charged $100 for a missed appointment even though I am not the one who missed the appointment. I was also charged monthly membership fees even though I never even saw a therapist. No one has reached out to this day and it has been over two months. I've waited on hold for billing to address the incorrect charges but after 65 minutes hung up because I also have a job to do. Absolutely ridiculous for a place who is supposed to help people emotionally and mentally. Thank goodness I've been in therapy previously because if this was my first time seeking therapy I would've give up on it. Also, I can't imagine if I were someone in desperate need due to depression and had to deal with this. Shame on this company.Sherry Turner

It’s hard to even find the words at how skilled Dory Ragon is at her job. I suffered the extreme loss of my sister and son within the span of a few weeks. On top of that, I was dealing with turbulent family dynamics. She is an incredible professional, she’s always punctual, and gives reminders to ensure the appointment goes smoothly. I was an utter wreck, and hardly functional. Dory has incredible listening skills, and the ability to reflect back what I would say and help reframe comments to give me a better perspective. I know I wouldn’t have made it as well as I did without her guidance. She kept me functional enough to continue working and helped me engage as a husband and father. In fact, on my last visit with her, the entire family wanted her to know how grateful they were for how she supported me. From day 1 the entire staff has been super welcoming and helpful. Every staff member from the Principal to Ms. James has worked one on one with my family and my son to make sure he succeeds. They saw the potential of my son from day 1 and never let him leave school without letting him know they genuinely loved him. The teachers took the time to explain the strict curriculum and made sure to always answer my calls, texts, emails, etc. To be at work and to receive pictures of your child having an awesome day via text from his teachers, or even having your child's teacher text or call you one evening to remind you of a field trip or important meeting because they know you just had a new baby and could be forgetful is a great feeling. At PAVE they truly embody the saying of "It takes a village". Anyone with school aged children who have encountered me has heard me sing PAVE's praises over and over again. The work that my first grader is currently doing is more than the average first grader, but I want to send my child to a school where they are doing more than the average. Anytime I have had any concerns with my child with another child or his behavior and even his accomplishments, someone from the staff has always contacted me and we have come together quickly to resolve any issue. I don't go to school here. But I will say with all the money running through this school, the school is more worried about replacing perfectly good buildings with a different just as good building. Why? They have to spend their budget or the government doesn't give them as much next time. But they aren't building dorms to make sure all their students have housing. My friend had to live out of his car senior year. NC State prefers out of state and out of country students because they pay a higher rate than in-state tuition.V M

Everything from my degree to my sorority all created memorable experiences. My degree has served me well, and met people from diverse backgrounds with different interests. Loved every minute spent at the Thompson Theatre, and running on the indoor track at the gym. Lots of options for on-campus and off-campus dining options. My sister has been at the school since 1:30pm trying to move in but has been standing in line and is still in line at 6:17 pm for to get rapid testing! Very disorganized and inconsiderate of people’s time. How hard it is to have multiple testing centers when an abundance of students are moving in. I came here for a COVID-19 vaccine. The staff was welcoming and the event was very organized. I appreciated the signage and easy parking. Nursing students administered the vaccine. College can be one of the vehicle's for determining your success in life. It won't satisfy all of your needs but the experience of exchanging ideas with other students should be exciting. No college is perfect. Try and look at the positives that Shaw can offer like the ability to access school administrators and the opportunity to become a class officer & present innovative ideas. I've studied in large institutions where there were as many 300 students in a lecture hall and you're nothing more than a number. I would suggest that you stay at Shaw University and make something great out of yourself and your school.Al Welch

If I could give this school less than a star I would. Shaw is the worst school I have ever been to! The school itself is disgusting and not taken care of, they don't care at all about their students and make everyones life a living hell, the staff is incapable of doing their jobs in any timely matter and are not willing to help you with anything. I have had the honor to attend two HBCU's and two majority schools and my experience at Shaw was the best of a lifetime. I was fortunate enough to attend at a time where it was simply magical. We visited the UNC campus as tourists, and thoroughly enjoyed our visit. A supremely well manicured and well maintained campus with a number of buildings that are couple of hundred years old. You can just walk randomly and still take in a lot of the campus, but it is even better if you have someone who knows the campus and can tell you why to take a sip of water at the fountain or a bit of history of the Old West building. We recommend the Coker Arboretum, a calming oasis with some excellent fauna (tiger lilies!).Mini Rag

My sons service completely SUCKED! We got here at 3:30 and it’s 7:43 and we’re still waiting for a SIMPLE MRI and can’t get assistance and the people are RUDE!!!! Do NOT recommend this hospital! People puked in the restrooms they left it for HOURS! This place needs a major health inspection I bet they won’t get far!! Gross and by far the worst service ever for an ER! Durham Tech determined that I was an Out-of-State student because I have not been a resident of NC for 12 months at the time of application, rather than 12 months at the start of classes (which is what the State law states). And they refused to retroactively change my status, despite their mistake. So I was illegally charged triple the tuition for my 1st semester. I was charge In-State for my 2nd semester. However, my refund was due in February, like everyone else's. Direct deposit. But I never received it. Financial Aid was blaming the Business Office and vice versa. March rolled around. Same thing. No one was processing my refund. April came and went. It is now the end of May, going on June. June. My refund was due in February and it is June. The Business Office still has not sent out my refund. They refuse to. They outright stated that I must show up in person to receive paperwork to get notarized. The classes are not the problem. It is the support staff. They are swindling crooks. They have little integrity. Do NOT go to Durham Tech. Go to another school. Even if you have to do it online. These people should be investigated. Do not go here for continuing education courses such as the MSF. Staff does not talk to each other and take forever to get back to you for updates. I never received reimbursement for class time not attended. This college did nothing to make this problem right. All they care about is money. The staff is good and always try to answer questions as soon as they can, as well as giving you appointments to meet with the right person you need to talk to. This is the most complicated system I have ever seen in comparison to some of the other programs out there. They send you a thousand referrals at once. You have 3 different things that have to be completed and all sessions have to be done before you receive payment. AND, I just realized that I only have a 7 day window to submit all documents prior to receiving the lowest payment (per session) that I have ever been offered. 3 times the work for less pay? In my final year here. I have gotten a great education and feel very confident in passing the bar. But the communication at the school is pretty bad. The administration will wait until the day before to tell us about important meetings and expect us to drop everything and be there. Back in my first year, they told the students a class met at one time but told the teachers it met several hours later. So, we all got there and sat and left hen no one showed up. Hours later the dean was running around looking for us in the library telling us our class time had been moved. They didn’t tell us where our assigned parking was until the day before classes started. May not sound like a big deal, but parking in downtown is crazy so planning ahead is nice. My class had a teacher for an important class who was clueless and very unorganized. A dozen or so students complained to administration throughout the semester, but nothing was done. They ended up just passing everyone, but the reality is we don’t have a great grasp of that class’ material. The school never explained themselves for not doing anything to improve our class. When co fronted about it, they suggested we take our time to sit through the class again with a different teacher. They also suggested just rely on the bar review class we take to prepare us on that material. Overall, great school and I’ve been happy. But communication needs to improve and it would be nice to see them take responsibility for their mistakes once in awhile.Charlie Gray

Six figure debt load and no way to pay it back…to high a price for that cool little "Esq. " on the letter-head. Go to JDunderground, or Top Law Schools Forum and just search the name and you will see the truth.
