We heard about Chaminade University from a friend and when our daughter was accepted to Manoa and Chaminade, we flew out to tour both colleges. Both were beautiful but we were sold at the sheer “like home” feeling Chaminade offered. Everyone was so friendly and the dorms felt like a smaller scale apartment building. Don’t get me wrong Manoa was GORGEOUS and great, but the common bathrooms shared by each floor was a big concern for us. Chaminade is small enough where the teachers and staff actually know your name and there’s a wonderful support system for their students. Our daughter came from a small private school in LA and we felt leaving the mainland and coming to HI was culture shock enough; so coming to a smaller school offered some familiarity and comfort. She is now in her second semester of her second year and absolutely LOVES it! The island, the school, her 4 Roomate’s, and her new island Ohana have made this her second home, and we feel very safe with her there. I can not say enough wonderful things about this school. From the way they handled the pandemic, to their small classrooms & fun activities- it’s just amazing all around!Jorge Santiago

I loved my time at Chaminade …this was when there was still an off-campus coed dormitory called Hale Pua on King Street and we would ride our bikes to school everyday.. lots of friends.. didn't have a car at the time so we would drive w kimo Ryan and his Jeep Ryan Foo my roommate also had a car …there was Mike from New Jersey who had a motorcycle shipped out , and Jay from Alaska also had his BMW …bodysurfing at Sandy Beach..& surfing north shore …we had lots of fun back in the day this was in the 80s …I'm an old man now but I know Chaminade is still a great place… lots of fun good learning …study hard, play hard ,pray hard keep on surfing, Surf's Up, Hang Ten Aloha! Went for a meeting on Kalaepohaku Rocks, due to covid and everything were headed towards November/December 2022, St. Louis staff are friendly and personable, like because alumni association makes it possible for any boys to attend Saints. I’m grateful for being able to study here in BYUH, one great thing about this school is that it truly provide an environment that’s safe and encouraging student to learn not only from the lecture but also with its diversity in its students. Another great thing about this school is that there are many professors who are passionate about what they are teaching and are very supportive and understanding to their students. The location of campus is one of the most beautiful locations for a college campus. It is accepting of so many people and cultures which allows for such a unique learning environment. Located near the north shore, you have a good opportunity to learn more about the rural area you are in as opposed to a busier place like Waikiki. It is unfortunate to see the merit scholarship go away for domestic students. It was such a good incentive for students to do well in their classes.brayden peterson

Very good school. The class sizes are small, which allows for more interaction with the professors. The student body id from all over the world, which allows for diversity. The school also does a good job of building respect for the community. That being said, there definitely needs to be an improvement in communication from faculty to students. They tend to not notify students of changes and do not provide good channels for real feedback or suggestions.Jeremy Brown

I've only been going here for a few months, but so far I don't have any complaints. I suck at math, so was very happy to see they have free math tutors in the main library, in a study area! You can sit at a table and work alone (fast and free wifi for students), or ask the math (or english) tutor for help, which is the only thing that enabled me to pass. Beautiful campus, with large jungle trees, birds. I love the library, although they close too early during summer sessions, and are not open on weekends! One thing I don't like, however, is that in many classes, you sign up for the class and pay the tuition, and then the instructor directs you to buy a book (with an authorization code inside) ($190!) which you use to go online (Pearson MathLab), which is where you watch the videos, do the homework, quizzes and exams! If I am paying Pearson to use their website to learn all this, why am I paying the school so much tuition?We're literally paying two different institutions for one math class. Yes, I DO go to math class, but the instructor just goes over the chapter in the book and works out the examples on the board, and is available for questions. I feel this Pearson website should be included in the tuition, because..really now….the instructor isn't really doing anything after class, is she? Like grading homework? It's all online. Finally, this school advertises heavily/recruits in Asian countries, and many non-English speaking students attend the school. I don't have a problem with this, but now, in some of my classes, we have students who speak very, very poor English and can't follow along, (Excel Spreadsheet Class) and are always raising their hands to stop the teacher and have him come over and show them what to do! I don't have a problem with the occasional question regarding a formula, but most of these interruptions are for very simple things, like "How do I open a document?" Me and the rest of the class sit there and twiddle our thumbs, surf facebook or sleep while the whole class comes to a halt to allow the instructor to go to that one station and bring the non-english speaking student up to speed, while the rest of the paying class is sitting there, wasting time. One last thing; avoid the bookstore if you can, and buy or rent them online. Very expensive store, even for simple items! They sell a very cheap Texas Instruments calculator in there (recommended by the math teachers, coincidentally enough), and without even thinking, went over and bought it. They sell it for $20, but used it for about a week, and hated it. I found it very crappy, the buttons wouldn't register when pressed, etc. I was at Target later that week, and noticed they had calculators, and was shocked to see mine hanging there for $7.50! I paid $20 for a calculator Target sells for $7.50? Target had $20 calculators that were amazingly superior to mine, with larger screens, and better functions! What a joke! The other scam they do, is sell "branded" textbooks "specially printed" for Kapiolani College. Which means, they add their own little advertisements to the book! I have a "branded" textbook I bought from them, and every chapter or so there will be an advertisement in there for other classes at the college. Oh, and by the way, because they insert their own pages, guess what? The table of contents is now thrown off. By Chapter 10, when you look up "ROM" for example, the Table of Contents says Page 249. So you go to page 249, and it isn't there. So you start looking back and forth, lo and behold, it is way up on page 260. Thanks, KCC, for making me waste 5 minutes of valuable study time looking for something in a book that I paid $180 for, and in which the table of contents is now useless, because you "branded" the book with advertising inserts! Oh, and good luck selling the book online or to any other school; it says on the cover "Specially printed for KCC!". They do this, basically, to make it harder for you to sell it to a new student.James Dylan

I am a Senior citizen with several Masters Degrees and a world of experience. I can audit classes at KCC, and have taken several undergrad courses in the past two years with various instructors, all highly recommended. You get out of it what you put in, but I never failed to learn a lot in each class I took. The facilities are very good, and the cafeteria is quite good. The Ka'ikena Restaurant has a great view and a learning atmosphere, so we try to get reservations there at least once each semester. A plus is that we don't have to pay for parking and several city buses stop right at the college The teachers are student-centered which must make them crazy sometimes, because a lot of students don't have time to do any studying, or don't buy or read the course resources. This semester I am trying a service learning project. It's a lot of work but I look forward to the experience it provides to learn more about our own community.Frances Chaine

Classes are 24 hours a day so they coincide with the casinos. Victoria's Secret training camp is located right next door. Pablo Escobar's nephew teaches a business class hi. Bela Lugosi is giving a lecture this October 31st. Those six Jamaicans from Cool Running can be seen periodically walking around the facility. If three McDonald's on the compound one of them serves exclusively milkshakes. You have to go upstairs to get into the basement. Campus is a disgrace. Oh Hi, you paid $2,000+ for classes? Well welcome! Now you just need to give us 20$ so that you are allowed to head to your class without us kicking your ass for coming here in your personal mode of transportation to get what you paid for. We also- as a reminder on your permit receipt, don't care if your car gets broken into, or stolen as it's not our responsibility. Oh but don't worry, enjoy parking your vehicle in our paved lot or our cool dirt, graveled dusty lot. We also have nice guys driving and sitting around to be sure no students forget to pay for their car. Be careful though, we have no white lines indicating parking stalls! Now before you think of heading toward your classroom, Don't forget! it will cost at least $1,000 more in order to fully participate in your class. Once you give all your money, welcome to your classrooms located in these tall apartment buildings. Oh one more thing, watch out on the way, as vehicles need to drive in the path you need to take to get to your class. Of course, if you want to kill yourself it will gladly make it easier for you! plus, we have many students present on both sides of the single path to your classroom, and situated all around campus that love to puff smoke and/or vapor in your face so that your lungs burn, eyes get irritated, and you get asthma and possibly an allergic reaction. Oh and perfect for your kids too because they have a pre-school program. The caretakers also take them out around campus for a nice stroll. The teacher who teaches ESL23-24 is very rude. She like using threatening words to respond the student , if you want to ask or figure out any further issues of your homework or tests. Graduated here, since then they have stuffed up numerous transcript orders and diploma replacements. They sent me someone else's diploma and refuse to refund or send me a new one, they say I need to pay for a new one!! This is after not being able to order one for 3 months because they were "looking for a new vendor". My transcripts have been sent to random people in other states who were kind enough to forward them to me, but what the heck?! What a joke of an institution.dean cobler

Very nice campus. However, most of the uh help, wearing the pink shirts are constantly driving at excessive speeds, ilegaly parking while blocking narrow sketchy exits (ie. Music ctr.). While waiting to pick up my children, I've noticed at least 7 different cars, on various occasions, driven by the very same uh helpers(pink tshirts), speeding in the parking lot, disregarding all rules, in a disrespectful and ignorant manner.D S

If you like having your financial aid cancelled the week before classes start, having acadamic advisors who have no clue what they're talking about, and being stranded in student housing with no adequate meal plan, this is probably the school for you. If you like weekly mental breakdowns, constantly asking yourself whether or not HPU is really an accredited university, and being lied to about the status of the accreditation, this is definitely the place for you. HPU is having issues with accreditation, but rather than being honest with students, they sent out an email saying that they are a "bachelor's general" and "master's general school." What does that even mean? I read their accreditation report and WASC didn't say anything about this. Also, the staff has messed up my transcript so many times. I was a day into my last semester when I received an email, well after I was told I could definitely graduate, saying that I was two credits short. Okay, fair enough, but then I expect to use my loans to pay for the $2300 class. Nope. HPU wouldn't let me. They also cut financial aid for textbooks before classes even start. And let's not forget about the time my on-campus loft flooded and the student life staff told me to clean up what was basically a swamp with towels. No one I know likes this school. My advice? Run. As fast as you can. And don't look back. Don't even apply. You're signing up for the most stressful time of your life. The only good part of this school is the English department (I was an English major). The instructors in that department actually care about students and their success, but outside of those few people? No one wants to help. I like to think the nightmare is finally over, but my diploma hasn't arrived yet, so who knows.Marian Gentile

My experience was better at HPU in comparison to the 2 other universities I have attended– one of which is on Oahu and the other in California. HPU is also ranked fairly good in the regional "Best Western Universities" in the US. Some students may have had bad experience(s) at the school but I think it happens to every school. The university loves to cancel financial aid the day classes start without warning to students. They have talked mentally injured students (like a concussion from surfing) into staying in classes when they should have been sent home to recover & removed from classes. I was scheduled to meet with the Director of Admissions , Elizabeth Steele Hutchison, via Zoom to review my law school application. I waited on Zoom for several minutes without ever meeting with her. I sent her an email, and she replied saying she had to cancel last minute. So we rescheduled for the following week. The day of our rescheduled meeting, I received a phone call/email from the Admissions Office saying they would need to push back the meeting time by an hour. This worked with my schedule, so I confirmed the second rescheduled time. When I logged on at the new time, I again waited for several minutes and was never accepted into the meeting. I eventually logged off and emailed the Admissions Office noting that this meeting fell through again. Apparently, Ms. Hutchison had logged in to another session for the meeting. Regardless, we never ended up discussing my application after rescheduling twice. Although everyone in the Admissions Office with whom I spoke was very polite, I ultimately never met with the Admissions Director which I feel is due to the law school's continuous rescheduling and lack of communication.Misa Morreall

My thing is, if you are going to pursue a career in social work, you have to have some type of heart for the less fortunate people out here. There are people who work and work but because Hawaii is so damn expensive, they CANT make it. There are also people who have disabilities. What I'm saying is that everyone is going through something of some sort So, You need to have empathy and sympathy for everyone. Especially if you are getting paid for it. You have to treat everyone the same. Don't FAVOR CERTAIN FAMILIES OVER OTHER FAMILIES .That's not right. Everyone is and should be treated equally. If you can't do that then CHOOSE ANOTHER CAREER!!! Oh my god….words can’t describe how much I am feeling blessed by this organization right now. They were the only financial help I got throughout the whole pandemic. They helped me be able to save for school last year and then are helping me again while I’m in school. If it weren’t for them I would never have been able to get my career path going. Forever grateful for what they have done. If you do your part and put in the effort with the paperwork and stay patient they will work with you. I read some of the other reviews and seems like some people were denied. Be patient and have the right documents. I just got my confirmation email. Two stars for being a place to go to for assistance, but they don't respond to messages or emails and when they do, it's a one liner that does not answer the question. It's odd that they require all these vendor forms to pay our landlords and Council for Native hawaii does not require it to be that rigorous. If the application is approved, why wait for the landlord to send over the vendor verification. All the processes of approval is complete and has been for 2 weeks now. Late fees are going to be charged and I'm having to try to make payment again for this month.lei lani

Do not trust this place if you are a parent who is sent there for an evaluation by child protective services. The director of clinical psychology, Dr.Cheryl Anadya is a malicious, racist, cold-hearted individual who has violated the code of ethics and conduct for psychologists. She with purpose and goal in mind lies on clients and the children who are sent to her for evaluation. Writing in documents sent to social workers and judges, untrue statements, and diagnoses. Her demeanor is nothing short of evil. She should be shunned by the community of psychology, investigated by the board, and stripped of her titles. She is harmful to the community of psychology and a threat to the parents and children in our society. I suggest that any parent who sees her name quickly requests a different evaluator because seeing her places you in danger.Garry Fishborn

They offer some really good non credit classes in Social Media but their customer service (website, phone, & in person) has a lot to be desired after the headache I had last time trying to register for a class.
