Wingate has a very personable and helpful staff many of whom have been there a long time it seems . Admissions staff was first rate. But once your student is enrolled, as a parent, you will need to be persistent to stay informed so you can help your student succeed. Wingate's technology is antiquated. Difficult to do any business online as a parent. The school is paper intensive and sometimes the paper seems to fall through cracks. Wingate only recently came up with a way for tuition to be paid online. There is no parent portal yet that allows you to stay up to date with what is due when. Bills are mailed and the expectation is you mail checks or pay on site. If they have a payment plan, they do not advertise it. Most pertinent information goes through the student portal that the parent has no access to. This creates opportunities for miscommunication and missed deadlines. The school is under-staffed. If you have to phone someone to ask for help or clarification, expect to get voicemail that states you will hear back in a couple of days at least. Email is a better option but don't expect a same-day reply. Communication is not a strength here. During this last and very widespread flu season, the campus had a very big outbreak but no classes were cancelled and parents never received any communication regarding making certain your student had a flu shot. Overall, I would say the school has its heart in the right place and most professors are engaged and want to see the students succeed. Still, the school has a ways to go in developing the kind of infrastructure that justifies its tuition costs. Wingate rightly has a reputation as a collegiate Sparta, roughly one in every four students is some sort of athlete. Not necessarily a bad thing but if your student is not going to be playing a sport or chooses to leave a sport once there, be aware of what other options they have on campus to stay engaged. The student transfer rate accelerates at year two. If campus surroundings are a consideration, know that Wingate is an exceedingly small town so that the campus is basically all there is. The neighboring town of Monroe is slightly bigger with more ammenities: small mall, Walmart and fast food options. Charlotte is a short drive beyond that. Uber is not allowed on campus, we were told. So your student needs a car or friends with wheels if he or she is going to leave campus or fly out of Douglas International. Overall, Wingate has been a good experience for our student despite a bit of heavy lifting for the parents. Having proper expectations is important when choosing a college. Been here for three years and all Wingate has done is raise the price of tuition while subsequently taking away things on campus. For one, they have limited our meal exchanges for Chick-Fil-A and Freshens to only two and three exchanges per week. The caf is unlimited, but they close at 8 p.m. and have limited food options. Wingate is also planning on charging us to keep our cars on campus while raising tuition at the same time. My question is why? No one asked for the DPC to be upgraded (and it was supposed to be done in January…) so why should we have to pay for it? The freshman dorms are in serious need of upgrading and the upperclassmen apartments are manageable but not worth the money, in my opinion. Honestly, the only reason I still attend Wingate is for the music department, and that’s why I gave this review 2 stars instead of 1. There is absolutely no reason that our tuition should be raised each year, that’s ridiculous and it actually causes many athletes and other students who attend Wingate on full scholarships to have to drop out. Private colleges are supposed to be essentially all-inclusive since that’s what the high tuition prices are for, but Wingate is definitely not all-inclusive and constantly cheats us out of our money.Lauren Whitley

Wingate University holds a special place in my heart as this is where I started my college education. I ended up transferring to complete my Nursing degree (at the time Wingate did not offer Nursing degrees) Even so, my faculty advisors and mentors steered me towards my strengths, leading me to a rewarding career in Nursing. Let's be honest, there are good things and bad things to this school. While the department the major I have is very small and thus more personal with you, especially with advising, the bigger departments like business are very impersonal with you, and hold rather strict barrings on until you complete the, to be honest, useless general education the college forces on you, though that is the case anywhere in America. It is almost arrogant in how they dismiss the ideas and opinions of the students in favor of their own. They are also known for their excessive penny pinching. With the prices on campus being outrageous, they also hold strict rulings for housing and parking, giving you hefty bills if you mess up on even the slightest infraction. Overall, the grand and upcoming productions they are doing with the school, such as the football field and new dorms and buildings, do not help the general student population much. Now, with this said, there are good things to this place. For one, in smaller departments, you get a generally more personal and kinder attention to you and your college career. With my department at least, as long as you show the ability, they help you get the classes you want and need. Also, at least on campus, school spirit runs deep with the green and gold. There are more than enough events to bolster this said school patriotism, and can eventually come to rival other schools. Also, while some professors have a tendency to stuff beliefs down the student's throats, others can be thought inspiring, and can be interesting and even fun to go to classes sometimes. However, the lousy administration still lingers over these benefits, and hampers the overall quality of the school. If they fixed that problem, they would be a good school. However, with that said problem, I can only recommend it, as a current student, as a mediocre to slightly above average at best school to prospective students. To them, I would look at your options and see if you want to come here. I do not regret the choice of coming to this school, but I cannot ignore its blatant and crippling flaws.Drunk Farmer

If you have a lot of money, or you're a research student or engineer, you probably won't have a problem with this school. The school looks very nice on the outside, but as a student, I hated it. The dorms were god awful. Their elevators did not work on the first day of move in. At one point they did not have enough rooms in the highrises for the students, and had to house students in the commons rooms and blackout the windows. The Cafeteria food was always questionable. Cold and pretty unimaginative. Facilities and services always closed down early. There was hardly anything open on the weekends. Not to mention there is barely any means of going anywhere outside of campus if you don't have a car. Speaking of cars, parking services is ridiculous and incompetent. They wrote me up even when I had my parking tag right on the windshield, positioned properly where it was supposed to be, and another time I got a ticket after the semester had ended! This school just looks for ways to nickel and dime students. They're department chairs and coordinators are a bunch of fools who can't manage their jobs. And when they make mistakes, you are the one who will probably end up paying for it.Eric Williams

I went to UNCC back in the mid to late 90s. All I can say is if I had a time machine, I'd love to go back. I met several life-long friends that I continue to hang out with to this day. It's amazing how much the campus has changed over the years. The last time I was there (for the first football game) I almost got lost. I received a fine arts degree and have made a career out of digital printing and design. According to other reviews, people still like to go home on the weekends. That was also the case when I attended, but for the brave that stay around the school during the weekend, more power to you. That's where the fun is really at. Also, I'm hearing that students aren't attending the football games and the ones that are, tend to leave early. All I have to say to that is, just be glad you have a football team. *This review is in regards to their summer intern housing program* Queens must be the most incompetent organization I have ever dealt with. Of a group of five friends, they managed to "mistransfer" two of our contact information into their database – they messed up 40% of our applications! (Oh, and they they "misassigned" a third to the wrong room). While I wasn't too upset to learn that I lost my spot, even contacting them about my refund proved difficult since they don't answer their phone during business hours. If you're going to apply for summer intern housing at Queens, make sure to put in a few applications elsewhere.Alex Hoffman

The nursing program is bad. Less than half of the students that start at Queens for nursing end up graduating. Most people fail out of the program. You need at least a 77 to pass your classes and they will not help you if you’re 0.1 away from passing. If you fail a class, you can only retake it once and you will be delayed a semester because you can only take that one class. If you fail two classes, you’re out. It’s a very expensive school and not worth your time. They have a HESI exam that counts 10% of your grade and it’s really hard and you can’t study for it. This college has made a terrible impression. They got me admitted as a transfer student, and I have been preparing for the Fall session online, but to appear in person, and I just found out I missed the registration deadlines because student advising never got back to me. I took the new student orientation and the professor, just skimmed through all the info. There wasn't time for questions, and she cut it short by 30 minutes. It didn't even explain how to register online. I had been in communication and prepared for this session but didn't understand how to register so all the classes I had 'added to my schedule' weren't actually registered, and no one followed up with my questions. I thought I was registered, and even as I try to register now after the fact, it still says I need student advising which no one ever got back to be except for an email to say I already had everything set up. I am torn about this. Now I have to wait another session to get started?! NO! I will take my education somewhere where I can actually get assistance. This is such an emotional drag.Gabrielle Flores

The Financial Social Work certification program is very intensive model for exploring our own relationships with money as a way of helping clients understand their own. This program helps social workers go beyond the psychosocial assessment of their client to helping empower their clients in identifying and changing behaviors adversely affecting their financial wellbeing. I’m rating this program with 4 stars because I do think better organization of content areas, more detailed index pages (for exam questions I needed to look-up, it was nearly impossible to locate some subjects in over the 800 pages divided into five different manuals), and a reduction in repetitive ideas and forms would help with learning and retaining the information. Amazing teacher parent communication. Staff and teachers acknowledge kids everyday and seem to honestly care for them. Love the emphasis in working with the community and nutrition. We like the focus on movement breaks. My kid’s feedback is the most important to me and so far she has flourished here since she has transferred from her other school. She talks about her school everyday. Parents who get involved in school and asked questions usually get answers. No all work can be done by the school or teachers. No school is perfect and there is always room for improvement. Facilities for elementary school could be bigger and Spanish lessons could be given more often. Volunteering, being involved and enticing dialogue works wonders for the common good. No all parents, teachers, and human beings are perfect but learning to work through differences is an important skill, at least for us, that we are trying to teach our kid as well as respect those differences. Complaining and doing nothing about it doesn’t generate positive change. School is diverse enough another plus since the fabric of our society is changing so rapidly learning to work with all people from different racial, ethnic, financial backgrounds, learning disabilities, etc. is going to be very important for our kiddos’ generation.CH MA

This school has been an incredible experience for my Kindergarten son and our family. The parent-teacher communication goes way beyond expectations. I truly feel my son is valued and the students are taught to be good citizens. I love their emphasis on movement and healthy living, and the thematic units are great ways to get young children excited about school and engaged with the learning process in a hands on way. I've also been impressed with the engagement of the parents, and the warmth we all show to one another. I've yet to meet anyone who wasn't kind and welcoming. If you like the Basic teaching concept, and are looking for a community that is engaged and active participants in their children's education, with a focus on the whole child, then this school is a wonderful option!Jessica Culpepper

what ever you do,dont go to this school even if its your last option. most of the teachers are bad and dont teach and if your child's grade is down then the teachers will not help them bring it up. the people running the school make dumb choices in there school like spending a ton of money from parents pockets to make/get stuff for the kids to use and then not let them use it (or at least at high school its that way). at the middle school there are mostly bad teachers and (high school too) they are just setting them up for failureAnthony_pitt _69

I've been trying to get in touch with this place for weeks and have repeatedly been emailing the lady dealing with my sliding scale application, and never heard back. Very unprofessional especially when dealing with people in need of mental healthcare. I could have been spending my energy finding a therapist office that actually emails me back, but instead I wasted my time here. **Edit: I responded with my information as soon as I could obtain it, and it would have been perfectly understandable if my application was rejected because I submitted my documents late. However, I was completely ghosted and left in the dark about this. No response after multiple emails attempting to follow up on the info I submitted. I was told my emails went directly into the spam folder, so I imagine even if I had submitted my info on time, it would never have reached anyone and by the time it was seen it would have been too late anyway. My daughters enjoyed the guided tour with Daniel from Admissions. They learned a lot (and so did I)…Gaming & Gaming Management is a thing! By thing, I mean a minor. We loved the intimate size of the school, the friendly students who said hello along the way, and the family feel between staff. I appreciate a professor from New Sciences taking a few moments to offer some advice about taking courses that allow students to have options. Great welcoming but when it came time for our campus tour that's when the laziness kicked in. Yes it was drizzling but if you walked in with an umbrella you can walk back out with one. My child has been there since kindergarten and was doing great. His grades were A’s and B’s. This school year 2017-2018 2nd grade has been terrible for my child. He went from being a top student to barely making it. He’s always been a great kid and never gets in trouble. He’s actually had two yellows this school year so far. My sone told me one was for talking during breakfast and the next time he received one he told me it was for just looking around. Unbelievable!! So I contacted the school and asked to speak with his teacher (Ms. Phifer) she told me the yellow was because he was just sitting there not doing his class work and had been doing this a lot in class so she said gave him a yellow “to hopefully light a fire under his butt and get him moving”. I didn’t know how my child was doing performance wise until that day. She had never written a note home nor attempted to contact me in any way. She never asked him if there was a a reason why or if he needed help. I thought maybe he had ADHD but then remembered how well he had been doing the other years. So I asked my child if he needed extra help in which he replied yes. I contacted the school in hopes of getting him the extra help he needed and was told that they would try to set up an intervention plan to assist him but no one has contacted me about a plan since that conversation. A week later I had to question his teacher about why she had given all of the other students with less than 4 yellows for good behavior, who had earned the right to attend the “Green Team Party “ their ticket but had not given one to my son. That was on a Monday and the party was coming up that Friday. My son was very sad and knew he earned the right to attend also. So I told him to ask his teacher ( Ms.Phifer ) about his pass because maybe she just forgot. He said he told her she had forgotten to give him his ticket. I waited until that Wednesday morning to speak to her. When I asked her about it her response was that "Oh it was just a joke I was playing on him”. Excuse me.. but this is not the kind of thing a teacher should be doing to any child especially a 7 year old! So I contacted the office to inform them of what the teacher told me that morning. The assistant principal stated that she would look into it and give me a call back. She called back hours later to inform me that his teacher Ms. Phifer, told her she did it because she felt it would be better for him to stay in class and do work. So the assistant principal bought her story of course but did say that my child had earned the right to attend so he would. She also stated that she knew my son was a good kid and usually does exceptionally well in school so she would look into getting him the extra help he needed. It’s been a month and still no plan of assistance. This school used to be great but it has gone down.. teachers have left and are still leaving because they fill like they can’t provide the adequate amount of help the children need due to over populated classrooms (26-30 kids per teacher) and the lack to concern shown by administration. My granddaughter is a 4th grade who has been at this school since K. This has been her year ever in any learning environment she's been in. My had a teacher (Ms.Poe) where they kept bumping heads. My daughter followed all protocols and procedure in handling the matter. Send my granddaughter an Honor Roll Student since K. came home with a 55 N reading the 1st quarter I was pisted and wanted her out then, my granddaughter reads all the time. My granddaughter reads so much that when the teacher makes her mad she reads to ignore her, if that tells you anything . My granddaughter was kicked out the class everyday for the least little thing for the 3 qtrs, til she looked forward to bring kicked out to get away from the teacher. When they finally moved her to another class, the new teacher (Ms. Anderson) didn't know she was in her class, and my daughter had to pick her up early the teacher didn't realize who she saw based on her behavior. The old teacher dog my baby out so bad the new teacher didn't even realize she was the same child. No problem since the move, until they put her back in the old teacher class for EOGs. My baby normally scores 4s and 5s, but because they put back in the old teacher room, she couldn't concentrate and score 3s and 4s. Mom and I we're pisted again and is pushing for a retake. Mine you she was able to take the practice with the new teacher and score 4s and 5s. No at this point I would not recommend this school. The way kids are retaliating on schools, time like this I see why even though it's wrong. Listen to children, they are little people with feeling too. Thank GOD she want be there next yr. This school is OK…. My daughter came from a charter school in NYC to this one and as expected, she was not developmentally challenged as much as I preferred, but a little more dedication at home can easily fix that. Staff has been respectful and helpful in my opinion although there hasn't been a complicated situation with my child as of yet lol. The only negative things I can say about this school are a horrible bus schedule and the chaotic beginning of the school year. There's very little organization at this school. Attending open house is necessary to get your child on the bus from day 1, problem is Open House only caters to unemployed parents, parents that work 1st shift, or single child homes. I say that to say it's only offered 1 day at 5 or 5:30pm….. God forbid a parent works 2nd shift or have other children to pick up during rush hour. And if you don't attend open house, your child will wait a minimum of 5 days to get a bus schedule. Now what working parent can afford to take off a week of work or leave work everyday early to pick up your child? My suggestion to this school would be to hold multiple open houses… at least 2 or 3 and let them all have different times so it can be accessible by all parents from all walks of life. The bus commotion going on this year is because of a new protocol…. it was much easier and better last year.Tasha Does it Better

Love Sugar Creek very much my son has attended this school since 2nd grade now a 9th grader he loves it as well. I would have graded them 5 stars but their transportation staff doesn't do such a great job at assiging bus routes in a timely manner nor contacting parents when parents change routes. Also Sugar Creek you guys can use more buses and more routes(Hello your growing). And to add the website needs upgrading and more information added. ThanksMs Parks
