I work here as staff and find the working environment pretty good. My bosses have been good, my coworkers are dependable, and the students seem well behaved and conscientious (most of the time). The new buildings are nice, and the harbor walk is kind of amazing, and the beach is very chill. Good luck finding a place as tranquil anywhere else near the city. There is however one small con and one big con.. the small con is that there aren't that many places to eat and Sodexo runs all the food on campus, and their attempts at ethnic foods are sad. And the aforementioned big con is that there is no less than 3 buildings being built on this tight peninsula right now, and one huge building that was taken down over the year I've been here.. the construction is a mess. Though the new, finished buildings, like the science complex, are great. But if you can take the T somehow, as I do, this place is fantastic.Mikhail M. Nitko

UMASS Boston has a Beautiful campus on the waterfront! It is building two Brand new buildings as student housing with a dinning hall on the first floor, overlooking the Boston harbor with a million dollar view. UMASS Boston has a collaborative research program with Dana Farber Cancer Institute that students can be a part of. I love the new Integrated science center, incubating many New exciting NIH sponsored science research studies. It is an exciting time for UMASS Boston which has a new chancellor with generous scholarship. Chancellor merit scholarship will allow students to get world class education for free.Khuong Nguyen

I am a student here at UMB, the professors are great. The administration is bureaucratic and inefficient and lacks transparency on any basic level. Parking here is dependent upon arrival time. If you get here at 10:20 good luck finding a space in bayside, probably will have to park at the globe. Clinical placement sites for Nursing are good, labs are good, the school is constantly under construction and areas are always being blocked off. Parking will soon cost between 9-15 dollars a day according to emails from the uni. So it’s alright but the university is slowly draining the life of its commuters.Bill Whitney

I attended the reunion this weekend as a husband. It was an overall pleasurable experience. The campus itself is very nice and meticulously maintained. Bathroom facilities adequate but nothing extraordinary. The BBQ on Saturday afternoon was nice because it was on campus in a very nice area. Music a bit loud for mid afternoon. Food, not great. I really liked the coozie they gave out. The class party Saturday night for the 10 year peeps was fascinating. It was inside a recreation center which seemed like an odd choice given the plethora of really nice areas on campus. The food selection there I thought was good but many in the group strongly disagreed with that sentiment. The tortellini was on point even tho it seemed to light a bit of a fire under my seat if you catch my drift. I was a little disappointed at all events that I had to pay 7$ for a bud light after already purchasing tickets. I will say we popped over to the 5 year reunion and wow, what a treat that event was. Overall it was a nice weekend, BC seemed to do my wife well as she is very smart. Her friends are also very cool. So I would recommend the college. We may send our kids there if my plan to hit the lottery multiple times comes to fruition. Mods for life.Joseph Moran

This review is just the physical campus and has nothing to do with the school's curriculum or getting accepted into the University. That said, this is the most beautiful campus I have ever seen in my life. It was a complete surprise and got me completely off guard. All of the buildings have the same gothic, sandstone color vibe. Beautiful campus, positive energy from students, close to scenic Chestnut Hill reservoir for jogging and walking ,top notch academics, great experience. My son had truly outstanding professors who helped pave the way for success after college. Formed meaningful friendships that will last a lifetime. My son was unhappy in the dormitory and moved back home, had to pay in full ($7000) for the 2nd semester even though he had moved out with 3 months notice, even paid for the food he didn't eat. Lesley Office of Residence Life said they would refund if they could fill the bed but I do not believe they made any effort as they charge a nonrefundable late fee if you do not apply for a dorm 4 months in advance. Lesley University takes advantage of 18 year olds signing likely their first contract clearly cares about money more than the welfare of their students! ***Do NOT be fooled by the new building at the "art" school*** A facility is only as good as the people using it. Most of the professors don't have the necessary art skills or communication ability to teach any artistic fundamentals. I transferred to MassArt with no regrets. Here is my experience as an undergrad CS major: If you work hard, and legitimately give it 100% of your effort, you will do well. For the most part, teachers want to help their students and will try their best to make you prepared for the industry. Words of wisdom: If possible, try and find a nearby space off-campus living to save $ Always do your research on rate-my-professor before picking classes All nighters may happen… Go to office hours if you need to and use all resources available Going to this school has been one of the most rewarding experiences I've ever had. I originally transferred from a public college in NYC and I can tell you the difference is NIGHT and DAY. I've seen some real unqualified staff that don't care about their students; but that's not the case at BU. In addition, there are so many clubs and activities. Because there is such a diverse student body, there is something for everyone here. Just put yourself out there and I promise you'll meet some really cool people.Helen Zhang

I am a current student here. Beware if you are looking to go to this school. The name is good… But let's be honest here, it's not Ivy League. Despite that fact, they make you work like a dog for your mediocre grades. I'm talking 150 page papers… 2hr midterms that end at 9pm and then you start another 2hr midterm the next morning at 9am. It's unnecessarily relentless. They push too hard. Also a lot of professors here are terrible. Use ratemyprofessor or a website like it. If you don't you will truly suffer. Plenty are good… But you have to make sure you get the good ones. That's totally up to you. I'm just surprised that for about $75,000 a year they can't manage better. And yes, that's how much it will cost to attend every year if you don't have financial aid or scholarships…. Now that the rant is over I have to add the campus is unbelievably beautiful and it's an awesome location in Boston.Will Kenly

First off, people who rate this place and have not gone here, discredit the ratings. Don't rate until you have gone here. Its as ridiculous as saying you don't like something you have never tried. Professors are far more concerned with themselves and about complaining how much better they are than BU. 1. BU makes a business of pulling scholarships. (and changing scholarship requirements mid semester) 2. One of the smallest endowments for a school of its size. (school less than 1/4th the size blow it out of the water. 3. Terrible alumni relations. Alumni largely want nothing to do with this place after leaving. 4. I have been on interviews with alumni where I am told "I don't hire BU students"Sean Taylor

Simmons is an absolutely terrible school. Not only are the staff and faculty completely disorganized and incompetent, the school has zero name recognition…even in Boston. I went to Simmons because I received an academic scholarship and thought I was making a wise financial decision by enrolling in their nursing program. Huge mistake. I knew after orientation weekend that I had made a horrible life decision. A majority of the girls in my class were flat-out weird. The professors were awful. In my organic chemistry class, I went to visit the professor for help understanding a particular topic. During our meeting, the only advice he provided me with was to "make flashcards." Gee, thanks, idiot. Thankfully, I transferred to a real school after my freshman year and never looked back. Don't let their faux "women empowerment" mantra sway you into thinking this is a good option for higher education. It's not. The student body, faculty, brand is all below average. There are many excellent schools in Boston and the greater Boston area: Boston College, Boston University, Harvard, MIT…heck, even Northeastern blows Simmons out of the water. Please don't settle for attending this no-name school, even if it's free.Jo Lane

I did the online Social Work Master's for only one term. The entire program is very poorly organized. I did not receive a financial aid check until 11 or 12 weeks into the term. The format of the online classes was terrible, class sessions would oftentimes crash or I would lose audio connection. Attempting to speak with financial aid, or advisors was nearly impossible. Even if I had something urgent, the earliest I would receive a reply was a week, sometime I never even received a reply back. If you value your education and an efficient academic process, please do not waste your time, effort, or money on this school. The only positive things I have to say about this school were my interactions with professors, who were very nice and knowledgable and my academic support specialist. Aside from that, everything is mismanaged, poorly organized, and caused more stress and effort than necessary.G.Q. Sage Brown
