7 Best Msw Programs In Austin, TX (2022 Updated)

This is a great university! The psychology undergrad program prepared me for success in my current counseling psychology master’s program quite well. The faculty are fantastic and the campus is gorgeous. I appreciated Spanish tutoring with Dr. Escamilla provided by the school as well as numerous career development, grad school application, recreational, and internship placement opportunities! I only wish it was a bit more affordable as even with scholarships it’s quite pricey. But, I am glad they pay their faculty, and I do think they spend the money well on resources that directly positively impact students. They have a career resource center that’ll help alumni with resumes, searching for jobs and more! The gym and yoga studio are great. One of my psychology professors had us meditate as part of class and we did things like go outside to paint together and go to yoga! It was a positive psych class so it fit. This isn’t to say the university was easy or without academic rigor because it was challenging and involved plenty of difficult academic work including research! I do feel it was social justice oriented as I appreciated the Mexican American cultural class in Spanish I took told from an indigenous professor and perspective, though to be even more socially just, reduce the price of tuition! I enjoyed that I knew at least half of the faculty and they knew me and remembered me and would say hi years after I took their class; so much better than just being a number in a big lecture hall! It may not have the rankings or prestige of some larger universities and how can it being so small, but the quality of education and experience is high. Only 1 student was mean to me 1 time my entire undergrad career. Really recommended! I would not have been prepared for my current grad program without SEU…don’t think I would have even gotten in otherwise because I was taught at SEU how to write an ideal essay, APA publication format, interview and interpersonal skills, and was able to achieve high grades because the learning experience is so high; I got my disabilities accommodated for instance. Literally the only reason I cannot give 5 stars is the exorbitant cost that limits many people so they can’t attend or will have a lot of debt. Otherwise, fantastic!Alysia Duemler

I completely agree with a post below about how much I loved this school, yet upon graduation I felt lost and unprepared for the “real world”. I think the staff and curriculum is amazing, I wouldn’t choose differently, but St Eds was like a dream state of mind. That being said , I have obtained a different bachelors degree since graduation and changed my field of study. More real world practicality from the programs perhaps would help prepare future graduates to succeed ! Thank you st Ed’s for an amazing undergrad experience nonetheless, that I will cherish forever. I wanted to make a shitpost review but I can't think of anything funny and I also honestly really like St Eds. It's a good school. If you're ambitious, passionate, and hard working, the teachers will do everything in their power to help you succeed, even if you have mental illness or other problems most people might look down on you for. I really think I'm going to have a good shot at grad school with the support I've gotten at St. Eds and that's not something I'd be able to say about many other schools.Christina

Loved my time there. The campus is very big (but not overwhelmingly so), and one can walk to most classes in 10-15 minutes. Many choices of places to eat, either on the Drag or on the several dining rooms across campus. Only complaint about the campus itself is parking (which is either difficult to find or far away but always expensive, nonetheless), and the never-ending construction on campus, which can be quite an annoyance sometimes due to the route disruption or noise. Over the years, the University of Texas at Austin has developed and built the campus into an increasingly beautiful place. There are innumerable study spots and incredible views to be found all over campus. Further, they've been working on street infrastructure to make campus walk-areas safer and more accessible to pedestrians or bikers. Overall, great university.Paul Lewis

I would advise NOONE to attend this "institution". I did one semester here, Spring 19' and it was the worst experience ever. I thought, hey, let me give my people at chance, its a HBCU. PFHHHH, never again. For starters, I had seen on their website that if you worked for certain govt agencies you could get a discount on your tuition with the criminal justice program. I inquired about this on registration day and another day during the semester. The staff acted like they had no idea what I was talking about and even took my info and never got back to me. I was never told about the adult program. Luckily my employer tweeked my hours and I was able to attend class and return back to work with no issues. My professors were the only positive thing. Secondly, my current online school sent a request in April for my transcript to be sent once grades were posted after the semester ended…nothing was sent. I called HT and spoke to whomever is in that dept and she stated they would send it even though they didn't see a request. Then, I asked my current school had they received anything in early June, still nothing. I called AGAIN and left a vm, no return call. I called two days later snd spoke with the, I'm assuming assistant to the transcript lady because by that time I had gone on HTU website and PAID for my transcript and EMAILED my confirmation of payment and the completed request form to the email address listed on the school's website and on the bottom of the request form. Guess what she says? She didn't see a request but she "promises" the transcript was going out that day (fri, June 14) with the other transcripts. I called HT again the following Friday and left a message. I still havent received a phone call, email, nothing. They cost so much money and do the LEAST to meet your needs. I had a 1,000% better experience at Austin Community College and I didnt have to pay for a transcript, no matter how many I needed. I am HIGHLY disappointed in HT and am so glad I don't attended classes there anymore.Chandra Walker

The adult degree program is a joke . The recruiters never give you all the information . I did not find out every class requires a group project until after I started . The first class they made me take was an introduction to college class and I am a senior in college . That class cost me 1400 and the professor was constantly talking about history and not the course work . Also encouraging students to use Wikipedia as an academic resource amongst other things . The second class I took the students were all on their phones and their attitudes and behaviors despite most being over 30 were equivalent to middle schoolers . The professor Mr.Mosley did not teach the topic in the class health psychology he just talked about himself and his time in Colorado and he would go on tangents about his secretary he used to have . Mr. Mosley and the first teacher Trina both made fun of people with mental illness and called them crazy . I had to ask them both to be professional this is a college environment and people who are in the psychology field are hearing you dismiss mental health . This program does not teach you anything . So if you are going to be going for a masters degree you will be ill prepared in writing skills and general knowledge . I guess If you just want to spend 30,000 or more on a degree and be forced to work in groups with people that don't have work ethic or communication skills this is the place for you . I would not give this school or program one star but I think yelp makes you give at least one .emie s

The staff in EVERY office is extremely unorganized, slow and somewhat unprofessional. There is no reason for a university of this size to have so many issues with financial aid, answering questions, or graduation prep. After getting approved for graduation I was told I needed to come back to take another class because they "missed it somehow". Now i have to scramble to get into a class and make a payment in 3-4 days because of their oversight and lack of responsibility. How my transcript goes from 124 hours to 117 hours is mind blowing and the fact that no one can offer an explanation is ridiculous. I have had so many issues in my 4 years of dealing with this university from financial aid, being over charged for classes, not receiving my employee discount, etc. Stay as far away from this university as you possibly can. Enroll anywhere else but here. Taking classes here will cause you to stress abundantly behind things you wouldn't even need to worry about with a more organized school. Once I am done with this university in May I wont even drive past this place.Aneesah Rashid

Pros: Really excellent public policy school offering Master of Public Affairs, Master of Global Policy Studies, Executive Master in Public Leadership, and Ph.D. in Public Policy. Super active and social student body. Active alumni network. Frequently hosts events with public figures and policy experts in government and non-profit sectors. Impressive array of dual-degree programs with other schools at the University of Texas, including the law school and business school. The building interior was remodeled in 2010 and looks terrific. Cons: A liberal school in a very conservative state. Can feel isolated from the rest of the University due to its location. The school's Washington, DC presence is small, but growing. The school should dedicate more resources to professional development and career resources. Overall, highly recommended.Jonas Miller

Most of my classes are located in this building. It's a bit far from the rest of the campus and the building itself is old. They should probably remodel it or something to make it more accessible for wheelchairs.Anna Wong

Having experience directly with a number of nearby districts (AISD, DSISD, Hays CISD), I can say Austin Achieve Public Schools is by far on a different level in terms of the higher level of student support and academic rigor they provide to their students. Children who have previously slipped through the cracks in other districts have flourished academically as well as emotionally, as well as gifted students reaching new heights, with their whole child approach making all the difference. I highly recommend Austin Achieve to any parent looking for a school that will comprehensively prepare their child for the top universities in the US.Ashcon Habibi

I attended a football game last weekend where this team participated. I was shocked at the disrespect, language and behavior of the players and the coach. One of the players even attacked one of ours because he was embarrassed at getting blocked out. Absolutely amazed that they would behave the way they did and with the coach's support. As a parent, I am so glad we don't play them again.Jim Lansing
