Kenneth D. Mandl, MD, MPH is a pediatrician and biomedical informatician who conducts research at Boston Children’s Hospital. He serves as the Director of the Computational Health Informatics Program (CHIP) at Boston Children’s, where he leads a team that develops and applies computational methods to improve child health.

Dr. Mandl received his MD from Harvard Medical School and his MPH from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. After completing his residency in pediatrics at Children’s Hospital Boston, he went on to do a fellowship in health informatics at Boston Children’s.

His research focuses on developing interoperable health data systems and applying machine learning to improve diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease in children. Some of his key projects include developing standards and technologies for integrating electronic health records across institutions, creating predictive models to identify pediatric sepsis earlier, and using natural language processing to extract social determinants of health from clinical notes.

Dr. Mandl is passionate about increasing access to child health data and promoting open science. He led the development of the Kids First Data Resource Center, which provides researchers with secure access to genomic and clinical data on childhood cancer and structural birth defects. His team also created OpenTrialsFDA to enable analysis of clinical trials data from the FDA.

In addition to his position at Boston Children’s Hospital, Dr. Mandl is a Professor at Harvard Medical School. He has authored over 300 peer-reviewed publications and received numerous awards, including being elected to the National Academy of Medicine in 2013. Dr. Mandl continues to find new ways to harness data science and AI to improve pediatric care and research.
