20 Best Mfa Programs In Manhattan, NY (2022 Updated)

My overall education received I will give a 5 star. But as for respect for alumni and help available to them I give 1 star. I completed my b.s in 3 and a half years, I got a scholarship for 8,000. I decided to attend because my best friend was attending and enjoyed the school. I also did not want to attend a CUNY, I wanted to try a private college, but not too expensive. My education received was great, the professors were friendly and well educated as well as had expierence in their related field. BUT I have to take a required course for a masters degree program, I would prefer to take it as SFC, so I ask if the terrier come home program applies and they say NO because I am not pursuing another degree. Well, I’m sorry you don’t provide my graduate program. CUNY wants to charge me 2,200 for one class, I asked if SFC could lower the rate since I graduate there and they made about 20,000 off of my degree? They flat out said no, unless I’m pursuing another degree and would not discount the rate of 860 per credit which is about 400 more than CUNY. They wouldn’t discount me anything AT ALL lol. I would never even consider taking a masters degree program, certification or any other course at this school again. It was very uncooth and disrespectful to not offer any discount especially seeing as they made an immense amount of money off of me. I graduate cum laude and would have attended their graduate school but they offer 3 limited programs with a crazy tuition. Save your money and go to a CUNY for your masters. It’s okay for a undergraduate program but masters programs are limited and the amount they charge for the quality for care and respect for students is minimal. When I went the lobby and cafeteria area had classroom chairs and it looked awful, now it’s all done up and amazing looking lol is that what the extra charge is for ? I would have considered paying a bit extra but the way the man replied via email was kind of snark and annoying. You think they would treat alumni better. Oh well, whatever. They raised the tuition at lease 5,000 bucks in the 3 years I was there and if I’d known that previously I would have saved myself the student debt and went to a CUNY 😂🤷🏼‍♀️ Professors get 5 stars. I am going to be a Sophomore this year and I couldn't be happier with the school. All the faculty and staff made the transition from high school to college very smooth. The faculty and staff care about how your are doing both academically and personally. From the minute I stepped through the door at my open house, I was automatically welcomed with open arms to the St. Francis College family. Everyone from the students to the faculty members are friendly as well, it is really easy to find a solid group of people who will be by your side for a long time. Its also the perfect school for students who want to be highly involved on campus. There are lots of opportunities from department jobs, to research assistants, to clubs and sports teams. I myself am a member of two of their 21 NCAA Division 1 teams, as well as a handful of other clubs and organizations on campus, from Student Government to the Latin American Society. This is the perfect school for someone who wants to be an individual and find themselves, rather than just be one of a few thousand. By spending a day at St. Francis College, I immediately felt a strong connection with the school and everybody in it. I have never felt such an amazing vibe like this ever before. The only reason ppl go here and are willing to grossly pay for an education is the location. I went to school here and will say it is far overpriced for the education you are given. Some staff are great and really care about the education they are providing. Others just read off a powerpoint and have no interest except for a paycheck. Pace is expensive, doesn't help the students getting internships and when the students get one on their own, Pace takes the credit. After graduating, the students don't get a job. One of their alumni just got a good job and due to she owes money, they don't give her transcripts and are retaining her title. Is not possible for Pace to help when the students really need help? This is a good school. However, the quality is almost identical to the CUNY school I attended before coming here that costed significantly less. Additionally, the lack of diversity (granted, because of how this is a private school) is also lacking. PLEASE READ IF YOU ARE APPLYING TO THIS SCHOOL I attended the biology program as a transfer student and it was the worst mistake of my life. Marymount Manhattan puts up this facade that their small class size sets them apart from any other college in the city. Let me be clear: this school has more downfalls than advantages. This school requires their students to take general education courses as a freshman and then again at junior and senior levels. I was a biology major taking dance, film and painting during my junior year. Just another ploy to make more money. I was told by an advisor that I would have to graduate a year late to take one single class in spring semester that was only offered every other year. If a class is mandatory for graduation, it should be offered every year. The shortage of staff to teach classes sets an automatic disadvantage for students. How can they expect a student to return to one of the most expensive cities in the world to take one single class? The adjunct faculty is laughable. I took a painting class and had to buy everything out of pocket. I do not come from money as most students at this school and was told by my professor that my brushes were "too cheap". The courses from this college are impossible to transfer as they are considered a joke at even community colleges. As a freshman my friend failed her first biology exam. Normal, not everyone is able to adjust to a college style exam right away. She immediately went to see her professor about improving her grade and she was told to change her major and her aspirations to go into medicine over her first ever college exam. Is that pushing your students to be successful? Maybe the BFA programs are better, but I have only heard negative aspects about them as well. The majority of my anatomy class was failing and nothing was done by the staff to improve lessons regardless of the countless complaints by students. The graduation rate is laughable. The advisor and bursar offices are laughable. They are quick to take your money for a transcript but never send it out. There is so much more to say about this college but it cannot be done in a single review. Please do your due diligence before committing to this school. I transferred here from a big state school and after taking a gap year. As a marketing major in a primarily performing arts focused school, I sometimes feel like not enough attention is given to the business department, but the small class sizes and very focused attention given to each student in the school makes Marymount, in my eyes, a very great institution. This school has been very good to me and I have met a lot of awesome people and am currently working with the career offices to secure an awesome internship for the summer. The individualized attention that each student gets here is only awarded to this who strive for it, and unfortunately there students at Marymount who don't really try and attempt to get over on the faculty because its a private school. I received three evening robo-fundraising calls within a week that began with the robo-caller saying not to worry, they were just calling to see how my child is enjoying the school. After that, it became a fundraising pitch. If they want to see how my child is doing, they can ask my child. Three calls, all in the evening, within one week, and with a deceptive script. I really can’t explain what I went through with the staff, so unprofessional and the attitude is horrible I always try to be as nice as possible but the way they treat people is awful. They literally screamed at my mom who does not speak any English for not having her vaccine card with her although she had picture of the vaccine but her phone was dead they yelled at her and did not try to help her enter the building at all. Once I came and approach them they was talking to me with awful attitude and yelling at me!!!!! although I respect the policy but they always could help in situation like this making everything 10X harder and unprofessional behaviour. One of its kinda school Historic place as it is more than 100 year old school CUNY’S most iconic campus so far As building is quite old, construction is going on still it’s worth taking a walk here Lush green gardens and beautiful library plus awesome walkways and old concert hall and other buildings. Library staff is too friendly and easy going and so is the library too They have open tables with solar panels which is awesome Lots of environmental hazards are there which can be dangerous. From the moment I was accepted to a few months later, it’s been nothing but miscommunication, incorrect information, and confirming false details left and right. Name any kind of detail, and they’ve gotten it wrong. Name any kind of procedural, logistical, student experience piece, and there’s conflicting information. The “right hand doesn’t talk to the left” saying doesn’t even begin to describe how dysfunctional this place already is, and classes haven’t even started. When you’re about to go into $120,000+ debt for the rest of your life you’d at least expect the “student success advisor” not to demean you at every turn, or for at least one person to confirm details that are actually true. If you’re considering applying here, go absolutely anywhere else and spare yourself the unbelievably unnecessary headaches and stress. I took the 1-year online screenwriting course. In theory it sounded perfect for me, since I wasn't in a position to go to school full-time. I had high hopes. On the positive side, I did learn the basic principles of screenwriting. Also, I finished a first draft of a film script, which was pretty cool. The discipline of meeting weekly to report on my progress helped me achieve my goal. I wish my review could end there, on a positive note. But on the negative side, I found the instructor extremely rude to anyone who didn't agree with their opinions 100%. The person often ridiculed students and dismissed their contributions. The surly attitude shut down conversation more than once. I have a Masters degree, and have been a student in several schools as an adult – and I have encountered only a few instructors as abrasive as this person. (That's saying a lot, considering how arrogant many professors are!) Also, the instructor was late to class more than once. To be fair, the person did make it up, by extending the classroom time. Still, when you've arranged for child-care, it's a drag to sit and wait in front of your computer, while your instructor fumbles around, making half-baked excuses why they were late. I have kids at home who play the same tricks in an attempt to evade their responsibilities, I don't need my screenwriting instructor doing the same! Worse yet, the instructor once shared personal information about their family of origin that was unnecessary to the classroom context. (We paid a hefty tuition fee to learn screenwriting skills, not to hear sad facts about this person's childhood. Hey, we all have a few sad memories about childhood! Get over it! An online classroom is not the place for a paid instructor to share personal memories). I would have been more sympathetic to their plight if they had been a nice human being from the beginning. They weren't nice, so I'm not sympathetic. Finally, the instructor went back on a promise they had made to me during a classroom session. Another student hadn't come to the online class, and we were scheduled to read their script. So I volunteered to submit my rough draft – with the understanding that I could re-submit my script once it was finished, for another classroom review. The instructor agreed to those terms – but went back on their agreement a few weeks later. When I questioned the instructor about it, my concern was dismissed. So, I copied the transcribed conversation in which the instructor made the promise. They replied that they were way too busy to give each student individual attention! (Then why make the promise in the first place?). My poor rating is entirely based on the habitually unprofessional conduct of the instructor. The actual course content was very, very good. Had someone else – with a good work ethic, a sense of punctuality, and a commitment to personal and professional integrity – taught the course, then I would have given NYFA a perfect score. So, although I'm indebted to NYFA for helping me acquire basic screenwriting skills, and giving me the opportunity to complete a rough draft, I found the personal conduct of the instructor a very serious obstacle to the learning experience. My suggestion to anyone who wants to enroll in an online screenwriting course: – Make sure the educational institution has a professional code of conduct – Make sure the school holds their instructors to that code If you can't afford the cost of tuition: – Buy a good book on screenwriting. It will give you the exact same info about skills that this course provided, at a fraction of the cost – Enroll in a writing class at your local community center, where you can find like-minded people who will hold you accountable as you write your next project -Keep writing! Don't give up. After a number of years, I continue to uphold my opinion of the school.Robert Widdowson

The (limited) number of students that actually care is the only reason this school gets 2 stars. I attended the Masters Cinematography program in Los Angeles, and I am here to tell you that for that program- I can't speak to the others with as much in depth knowledge- the school is a joke, and serves to print money for itself. I was to attend for two accelerated semesters, and during the first, I found work doing what I was going to school to study and basically checked out mentally. When time came for my second semester, I had done very little for my classes, and went to our instructor to tell him I was leaving. The part that confused me was when he said that I was one of the best students in class, which made me laugh, as I had been working on set for the proceeding two months, hadn't attended class, or screened any projects for the class. I pointed out these facts to him, went to the bursers office with my story, and within 5 minutes I was holding a check for 40 thousand dollars: a complete refund of my tuition for both the previous semester, and the upcoming semester. My question is this: if they don't know they are scamming all their pupils, why were they so eager to hand over so much money and bid me farewell? Seems like an admission of guilt, and an effort (which admittedly worked) to prevent me from commenting on my experience. All you need to do is look at the top 5 most common jobs for degree holders from NYFA. The most common is elementary school teacher. The rate of alumni body working in thier field of study is a jawdropping .008%. Yea. Not worth it. Do yourself a favor, and watch all the films on AFI 100 greatest films list, then learn how blender and composition work, buy yourself a camera, and make a film.Nick Frazier

Did a filmmaking workshop. Loved some teachers and learned a lot, but the administration its just been awful. Since my first day. When I arrived due to a ridiculous covid protocol that I haven't been informed, I couldn't attend my first day of classes. I lost many hours and they just left me outside the door even though I crossed the world to get to nyc. And now, I finished the workshop four months ago and still haven't get my diploma. I keep writing to them but nothing gets done and it just keeps wasting my time. I love everything about the Art Students League. I started taking life drawing classes there after not having taken an art class in 40 years. I found that within a particular class, there is a range of talent among the students but that many are very experienced. I learned a lot just from talking to other students and observing the way they work. I loved that you can sign up for one month at a time to accommodate your personal schedule and try out different classes and teachers. If you're interested in top notch instruction in life drawing, take Sherry Camhy's class. She is a superior teacher, really taking time with students who want attention and encouraging of individual growth. Except for breaks, you can hear a pin drop in her class. I love the concentration. Great instructors and classes! I had one teacher who was a famous cartoonist. I had another one who was a portrait painter for heads of state. If you want to be taught by the best at a very affordable rate, this is the place for you. All the famous artists have come through the League, since it's been open since 1875. The facilities are acceptable and in fully functional condition. This place is the epitome of creativity. Children's classes are great too. It's a wealth of information delivered. The course curriculum is massive from the history of photography to the technical stuff. I haven't had trouble getting in touch with the school. When I email them I receive a quick response. My only issue it's a lot of material to read and not very interactive. I split up reading the printed material in small assignments, taking notes going over them a few times , and then do the exam. It's impossible to complete one unit quickly because they deliver a massive amount of information. it's hard to study for long periods. If you can master the professional photographer Course as I plan on doing then you will have a pretty sound education in photography to get you started. Self-paced and affordable for a working professional like me. I completed a course through Cornell and paid a lot more money for a lot less information. I am currently working on landscapes class. I've been into photography since 1981. I took this class more or less as a refresher course. Plus I have very little experience in the digital format. There not very good at getting back to you. Also they are in New York so the time change is hard to get a hold of anyone. I am neutral about this class. I am considering taking the photojournalist class. But at $1,000 a class i could buy a brand new lens. In my opinion if you don't know anything or a novice take the classes. I am not a novice to photography and I'm not sure if ill continue the classes. Update: I had the entire amount off and win in weeks was dropped from the program because I didn't have the money to buy an extention due to my illness.James W. Harms

After posting a thoroughly negative review of this school, I want contacted by the President of the School, who resolved my problems to my satisfaction. I am pleased with the outcome. I am presently taking the classes and I find them very helpful in learning professional photography. Based on the receptive way they dealt with the former problems, I will recommend them as a cost effective way to study. The lessons are very thorough and cover a lot of information you don't get in other classes on photography I have taken. It is still a bit difficult to get someone in the office to answer questions, and you can't ask questions of the "instructor" you are assigned to evaluate your work, so that is why I only give it 4 stars.C Loff

I lost respect for this place when they addmitted a certain student whom I will not name. He was not worthy because of his attitude and his actions in the community. He is black and was admitted because of his skin color. At that time in 1979, affirmative-action and quotas were in effect. Like the USMC, the smaller your ranks, the more efficient you are. The place and the people are sweet, but standards must be maintained with subjectivity. Also, Hunter College closed out its concert band in 1974. It languished on the books until a good effort was made to revive it in recent decade. It failed. The band library was shipped to the High School, where the Principal discarded it to the DSNY for refuse collection.Keith Charles Edwards

I worked there in the '90's in the security department. It's a school for gifted kids. One of the things that stand out, frommy many memories of that great learning institution, was that I remember seeing kids in third grade doing algebra !! ALGEBRA IN THiRD GRADE !!?? Unheard of in my book! Anyway, other than that I remember how laid back the atmosphere was. Kids sitting on the floors throughout the building. We weren't allowed to say anything to them about that. This was my first serious acting class that I took and it met my every expectations and beyond. Is it easy? No. Is it challenging? Yes. But I believe we learn & grow the most when situations are difficult or challenging. I wanted a glimpse of what it meant to be a true artist as an actor and the summer intensive at MFS certainly delivered that. I am going to say that Charlie is not a teacher for everyone. He makes that very clear and it's up to the individual to know for themselves whether they want to learn from a person like Charlie. Personally for me I need an instructor like Charlie. I need someone to push me to places where I am afraid to go as an actor. And while sometimes it was frustrating & scary, those small breakthroughs that happens makes it worth it. The summer intensive allowed me to certainly learn more about myself as a person. The Maggie Flanigan Studio reintroduced acting as an art form for me. During my time here I learned the meaning of truly being. Doing the hard work while attending this studio was the artistic challenge I have been seeking. And having had time to digest some of the teachings I’ve never felt so confident as an artist. I will also say that the close connections I made with my classmates also contributed to the learning experience, everyone was serious and ready to learn, ready to play, and ready to act. Charlie is the type of instructor that will tell you what acting is when he sees it; conversely, he will also tell you what acting is not when he sees it. Charlie, Karen, and Cherry are the absolute best. I've taken many classes in NY, since moving here three years ago. Nothing has been quite like the six week summer intensive at Maggie Flanigan studio. There is an energy the that the instructors bring to the place that is professional, safe, and filled with lots of heart and dedication. Each class brings you closer to taking yourself seriously as actor. The words, "home for the serious actor," fully encompass what it means to learn at the Maggie Flanigan studio. I feel changed as an artist, more confident, and inspired to dig deeper into the training. This is not a fun class to take in your free time. I just got my offer into my dream school Cooper Union yesterday with the help of the art studio! The school is extremely selective, accepting only 65 art students per school year. I couldn't have done it without the help of all the staff and teachers. In the summer of my junior year, I finally decided that I want to pursue the art field at the last minute. It was a late start, but I enrolled in many sessions of the intensive summer portfolio prep and managed to get my portfolios done before the deadlines. My skills in drawing were great but I lack creativity and experience in painting. The courses helped me improve my paintings skills and explore my creativity. The teachers were all very nice and helped me a lot. Soo, the principal was very nice and professional. She cared for me like I was her own child. After finishing my portfolio, I signed up for 1v1 private lessons to prepare for my home test. Delia and Eun-Sun helped me explore ideas and gave me a lot of inspiration for my works. With their help, my home test was a success, leading me to get my offer in the end. It was a wonderful experience at the art studio and everyone was very nice. I took the one-on-one college art portfolio prep lessons and it really helped. I'm really grateful that I came across this studio. It was pretty late when I decided to apply for art colleges and I was really worrying because I felt my portfolio was weak and didn't know how to fix it. Taking lessons here really gave me confidence in applying to college, knowing that I'll have some strong pieces. Though I took my classes online(bc I'm in another state), I was still able to improve my portfolio significantly. I liked that I was able to request instructors and see their past experiences. I worked with instructor Eun-Sun the longest and she was nice and really experienced. They guided me and reviewed through every step of all the projects to insure that it's a strong piece. I was also able to learn knew skills- new ways to make creative art works. I ended up being able to get accepted into MICA, SAIC, Parsons, Pratt, and received scholarship at Pratt and Parsons (88k) and SAIC(72k). I don't think I could have gotten in, especially with scholarship without the help of the studio and my instructor.Lily Wang

I took a graduate portfolio prep course for 6 months to apply interaction design(UI,UX design) major graduate schools. Previously, I graduated FIT, Accessories Design, and worked as a handbag designer for about 2 years. Since I don't have any experience related to interaction design, I was pretty anxious about working on my portfolio. Eunsun, Kyeom, and Eugina were so passionate and talented in terms of leading me to develop my portfolio with keeping my own perspective. They carefully listened my idea and then, gave advice and detail instruction to develop my idea to visual result. I made 9 artworks (using coding HTML, CSS, 3D mapping, soldering to make lighting, After Effect, Adobe Animate CC, Photoshop, Illustrator) and got accepted to RISD, Parsons, Pratt, Art Center, MICA, SAIC and got offered scholarship from RISD, Parsons, Art Center, MICA. Studying a dual bachelor's (and my first master's degree) in good part at the City College of New York's Division of Interdisciplinary Studies, at the Center for Worker Education, was one of the most fulfilling experiences that I have ever had. But it was only a confluence of unique factors at the CWE that made this possible for me so shortly after I arrived in the U.S. They have a compact yet superb interdisciplinary team of scholars that promotes the kind of close interaction that one gets these days with luck in postgraduate studies. And the Center for Worker Education's gorgeous and exceptional location in Manhattan's Financial District made it both an oasis of easy access from anywhere in the city (and from New Jersey, where I used to work then) and inviting for relaxing walks after classes. Besides, their four Semester Credit Hours–rather than the usual three SCH that is standard in most universities–allowed me to complete my dual B.A. in just three years, studying a good 25% less courses than it would have taken anywhere else. On top of that, I studied at a pace of just two evenings per week, and Saturdays only a few semesters. Add CUNY's exceptional affordability, some truly fantastic professors, and the CWE's unique diversity and you will get a combination of pluses hard to beat! This is City College's downtown, worker program, and it was an excellent fit for me. The facilities were clean and new, the registration was seamless and efficient (one of the best reasons to come here, and definitely one of mine), the area is great (not too busy like where some other CUNY schools are located), and all of the students are of a more "mature" age bracket (some people preferred this). Some of the professors were eccentric, lol, but good overall. Caution, like most new Liberal Arts programs like the one available here (Nyack one block over, College of New Rochelle in Harlem & South Bronx, etc.) these BA degrees are typically for people who are already working and who just need a general bachelors degree to move up at their job. This program in particular was established for those who worked in the public sector (mostly for the city, like in the building that Nyack is in) with courses in public admin, unions & negotiations, etc. (There's a master's program in the same field with CUNY School of Professional Studies in midtown). For some, if you need a bachelors to earn a little more money getting office jobs that require a BA, this is a great route too. It's also great if you want to attend graduate school. Some professors, particularly one in social work, will get you recommendations to get you into Hunter's MSW program. For all these reasons stated above, I recommend this program.Sha Ro

As a full-time employee and single mother the course syllabus enabled me to complete the credits I needed to obtain my undergraduate degree. Several years later I wanted to obtain a Masters Degree in a topic that interested me. I enrolled in the MA Study of the Americas program and I must say I was not disappointed. Everything I remembered about the CWE experience remained true. The professors are knowledgeable, passionate about their course of study and committed to each student that enrolls in the program. I have been and will always be an advocate of CWE. I never expected coming into a studio where the staff is just as invested as you are about the craft. Day one James Price gave me goosebumps throughout the ENTIRE class. He encompasses what an incredible storyteller can be. I’m captivated from beginning to end of class. The amount of value I have received (from day one!!!) will serve me throughout my entire career. It’s really hard for creatives to find a community especially one that makes you better! The Acting Studio is one you can trust. I recommend some classes such as Painting and Drawing class, Introduction to Architectural Design, acrylic and oil painting and Beginner Illustrator classes at Pi Art center. The teacher allow students to fully develop and elaborate what they want to deliver onto the paper. And then fairly evaluate and comment at each hard work. Everyone over there are respectfully and friendly. The classes are easy to catch and learn from. The work tasks are clear to approach and study from. The study environment is relaxing and enjoyable:)Yang Bai

I’ll be starting my second semester in P.I art center and all I can say is that all of the classes are amazing. I’ve been taking Contemporary Photography, Portrait of the city, Drawing and Premier Pro classes so far. I’m satisfied with all of them. Teachers and the education level are great. There are a lot of options like art, film, digital media and more, that’s why I decided to study here. The NY campus is beautiful, clean and comfortable. They also have a lot of computers for the classes that need them. The location is nice, perfect to explore Manhattan. I’ve been in the design industry my entire life and to be offered the opportunity to learn how to make bobbin lace was super cool. My husband and I have 2 children ages 8 and 10 in their 6th year at Studio. We could not be happier with the education they are receiving there. My 10 year old daughter is filled with enthusiasm about Reading and Writing. The children are writing their own stories, and learning grammar, punctuation, vocabulary, spelling, and story telling in the process. She is excited about all of her assignments and classwork, and comes home from school ready to dive in to her homework. My son is excited about math. The teachers give the children a lot of individual attention which allows the kids to work at a pace that suits them. My son is working on decimals and fractions, and can't wait every night to show me where he is in his math workbook and what new skill he is working on. Studio's homework philosophy is also invaluable. Staff will tell you right away that homework is between the teacher and the student and you should not be involved in ensuring that your child does his/her homework or checking the homework. I was skeptical at first, but my kids do their homework without any reminders or pressure from me at all. They tell me that they have to get home early enough to have time for homework, or they ask me to wake them early so they can finish an assignment. They are learning academically, they are becoming responsible for themselves and their work, and they love going to school. We can't recommend Studio School highly enough.Lauren Wenegrat

My decision to enroll my daughters into The Studio School was definitely a back patting moment for me as a parent. I knew the moment I visited for a tour that an education from here would equate to a tremendous amount of personal growth along with a challenging academic curriculum. You know you’re a happy parent when even you have a favorite class! For me there were two. Logical Reasoning and Kitchen Science are by far a few of some of the most innovative approaches to encouraging hands on critical thinking skills.
