17 Best Mfa Programs In Detroit, MI (2022 Updated)

The only program I can speak for @ this school is the Graphic design program. Coming here was one of the best choices I made. I felt unready and unprepared with only an associates and now that I am graduated with a BFA my portfolio and my body of work within it perfectly shows my design style and reflects my abilities. Many of the professors are willing to do anything to help you succeed, all you have to do is initiate that conversation and where you feel you need help. Like any school tho their are a few professors who are only their for a paycheck. However I gave the school 4 stars not because of my experience with the program but because of the admissions offices. The people who work on the 7th floor are some of the rudest people I have ever met in my life. Even many of the professors have admitted to not being impressed with the admissions office personal because of issues not being handled properly or unprofessionally. Likewise the school does not have a career center. Though a lot of kids don’t need a career center as KCAD offers many opportunities to network and work with local business’ in the graphic design department, many students in different programs could benifit from such a office where jobs might be tougher to find. Overall, the school offers a lot of great opportunities within the city of Grand Rapids and the GR community knows the work that comes out of the school is high quality. So you have a slight upper hand in the community because of the name on your degree when graduating. So take advantage of the schools connections when given the opportunity.Kelly Hart

A very unprofessional university with under qualified professors. Along with being under qualified, the professors are also rude. Professors often talk down to students and at one point called my classmate “stupid.” Grades are based on the professors’ own opinions rather than quality of work. When trying to fight a grade I didn’t deserve I was treated as though I wasn’t a priority and it took weeks for them to even respond. Dorms, parking, and a cafeteria aren’t provided at Kendall causing a major inconvenience for anyone who doesn’t live right in Grand Rapids. Diversity doesn’t exist and the student body consists of rude and judgemental students.Jared Folkert

When I went to Kendall their computer classes were state-of-the-art and better equipped than the college I attended in Los Angeles. They have a great career board and I was actually hired by Marvel Comics as a colorist before I got my certificate of completion. One of my friends was also hired at Steelcase prior to graduating. The computer fundamentals I learned gave me a competitive edge in the booming graphic design industry. If you are an artist or multimedia enthusiast and are trying to decide on a geat college to go to I can't recommend Kendall highly enough. The staff and facilities are astounding.Lars Canty

DSA is a great school for young scholars. The Principle (Dr. Reynolds) is great at accomadating your specific situation. Whatever that may be, she will do what it takes to assure your child has what they need to succeed here. They focus on majors (art, broadcasting, singing, etc.) You must complete an audition and hold a certain GPA to be excepted into the school; and the kids must maintain that GPA to stay. High expectations. If you have a young talented person, who earns good grades, this is the school for them. The staff is always helpful and the lunch room is beautiful. Our experience at DSA is great so far, my daughter could not have chosen a better school. She's in her last year and although she already has enough credits to graduate, DSA allows their students to stay and keep adding to those credits. Which is great. She'll graduate with 26.5 credits. Gotta love that. As long as you're willing to work for it, Success is easy to find at DSA.Monica Overton

WARNING! Beware of this school! This school is one of the worse High Schools in the Detroit area. Children at this school full on bully students and send a gang of students to one another up. Very unsafe environment. Second their assistant principle is a little racist. I highly reccommend sending your child to a better school especially if they are stating as a Freshmen. This school is also terrible with handling bully issues and students also sell drugs around the school. They act like its a great school when in reality its just another inner city school where children are around drugs, violence, racist assistant principle and terrible administration. Terrible and Unfortunate After my child's experience at this school i decided to make an online review. I give this school a rate of 1/5. This school is not what it seems to be. The staff is going to tell you that this is a great school for your child because they have a opportunity to learn their academics and perform their arts. Well it turns out that's the biggest lie in history. This school is DPS school which is one of the school with the LOWEST QUALITY LEARNING. My child started before at a straight A student and came out 9th grade year and a semester of 10th grade year as a failing student. This school is a JOKE. A JOKE. This place is gorgeous. We went for a photo shoot and I was just in awe of the beauty and flawlessness of the grounds here. Just outstanding. The first time I stepped onto the soundstage at MPI it felt like home. I came to the school with a writing background and left with a passion for directing and an appreciation for the entire filmmaking process. Learning the ins and outs of lighting, blocking, camera angles, composition, editing and so much more has aided me in becoming a better storyteller. Let this letter to Trio school you to avoid this place like the plague for GI Bill or Vocational Rehab: Please pray for my school experience, copy of what I sent Trio on Campus: Ms Ridley; Voc rehab does  NOT cover food or lodgjng you have been ill informed. Also since when does staff meetings take the place of your first customer the student. You informed me last minute via your surrogate which only makes me further doubt Trio's eternal and everlasting priorities and the humiliation and degradation I have suffered as a protected Veteran and Minister of the Gospel is nothing short of reprehensible  and divine childhood neglect. Fantastic music and theatre program that I aid with. It's also a pretty campus. Every time I go to the Take 5 Lounge, there's always a group or two of people who are making a ruckus. I know it's a difficult slope to tackle, I don't think it's appropriate hearing the n-word in normal dialogue while I'm trying to eat, and I say that as a black man. It's not just those groups though. Groups singing some musical or someone talking loudly on their phone is annoying to hear.Ramone W

I feel that I received an excellent education. The tuition is high, it's more than UofM Ann Arbor. However, you are getting excellent Professor's in smaller classrooms, which I really thought was beneficial for me. I like knowing nearly everyone in my cohort. Wayne State is often overshadowed by U of M and Michigan State. That goes for athletics, academic prowess, and the fact that it is in the very center of Detroit, a city that is really trying to be that much better. And it is. The same can be said about Wayne State. Architecturally, this place is incredible, (a literal sandbox of the famed architect Minoru Yamasaki and worth the visit literally for his buildings and reflecting pool alone). The professors are overall great and push their students for excellence. Unfortunately it is also a place where educational inequality prevails, with a lot of students transferring out, mainly due to systemic inequality in high schools. It is getting better but it is a long road. The "4 year degree" hasn't been achieved by everyone due to having students often "catching up" with core classes. That is the reality. However, if you do make it through, it is worth it. I want to one day see Wayne State placed in conjunction with the big 2 schools in Michigan.Theodore Hynes

It’s a great! Division II school. However, NCAA Division Sports is not the end or beginning to an education. Contrary, Detroit seems to be summed up as oversimplified. The city and the people who go to Universities in Detroit, people of color generally speaking. People of color maybe depicted in a way- propaganda. The worst administrative building ever. I sent over all of my transcripts to them and they received all but one, (which was sent to the same address) so they lost it, didn’t notify me of that I needed to do anything else or that there was something suspicious. Finally I called to see if I was accepted or not after waiting 2 weeks. They wouldn’t help me speed the process up at all so I had to resend the transcript and then wait another two weeks until I found out I was accepted. I had my financial aid in to them in the beginning of June for the fall semester and all the documents needed for them to process it. As I’m writing this it’s the second to last day to pay for college before I get cut out of my classes and I’m still waiting on my financial aid to go through. I’ve called them almost every day asking if it’s gone through or if there is anything else I can do to to help it get processed faster. I’ve been told numerous times there’s nothing else I can do and I just have to wait for them to process. I’m going to be cut from my classes because they haven’t processed my financial aid that’s been in for months. I’ve had everything done with more than enough time for them to DO THEIR JOBS. My whole future is going to be altered for their mistakes and incompetence. I’ve been on the phone with multiple customer service representatives and only ONE has been friendly to me. The rest do not care about the students going there. Everything that could go wrong at this college has, and I’ve never had any problems before at a college. I am an alumni of OU. I have applied for a job there several times and will not even get an interview! I am experienced for the jobs posted as they were the ones who trained me. Plus there were other female classmates that were hired and I did not even get a single interview. How can they turn away their own especially since I graduated with honors? As for the school program, be cautious and really examine all of the program requirements.They neglect to tell you everything and give a lot of false hope and promises. Had I known then what I know now, I would have selected an entirely different program and a different school. So glad i spent my undergrad years here. The campus is beautiful and improving. Dorms are dated but the student apartments are nice if you can get in. Student life is good. The athletics program continues to improve and had instilled alot of pride in students and alum. The food court has many options for all diets. The education is second to none. An excellent engineering and health science program in conjunction with Beaumont hospital. The business school is improving and an outstanding honors college.Soléil McCants

The entire application and registration process had me feeling like I would rather not attent this school. The application took months and had complications everytime I turned around with little to no assistance by their staff. When I would inquire for assistance the staff was rude and condescending. If they wanted a way to scare off new students, they are doing a great job. 👍🏻 Follow up: I continued to push through the horrible application process and start my first year, Now nearing the end of the semester. I have had a terrible experience. They don't set you up for success, at least in my experience. I didn't know about any resources to help me if I was struggling until a few weeks ago. When you try to reach out to profs they don't bother to respond to your emails, After my 4th email attempt i finally got a response hoping the prof would lead me in the right direction to help me in my classes–instead they told me they are unwilling to help me out. Since it's all online I find it common that allot of profs want little to nothing to do with their students or even care about their success.Not saying all professors are like this. I went to school here for 2 years during that time period the school made my life beyond awful. From the clicks of windsorites that all know eachother (I’m Canadian and they even kept to themselves and wouldn’t even acknowledge anyone that didn’t grow up with them). The education itself was a joke there was no decent help to be found for students. I made the mistake of going here so you don’t have to! Save your money and go to any other university!! The profs are useless and residence is far from safe. Be careful especially if your a woman! The meal plan is too much money for food that will make you physically ill (happened more than once and not only to me). They’ll put you in a program you don’t want to be in and take your money. I am a transfer first generation non traditional student with disabilities and everyone is on board with seeing me through graduation. Detroit School why haven't you guys fixed the 34 schools in your District which has "Lead " in the water unacceptable. If you guys are willing to spend bottled water and coolers you guys are doing it wrong . I just looked on Line and found water fountains for $379.00 ea . If you guys put let's say 4 per school the grand total only comes to $51,000 and change you still have a remainder about $149,000 .I am pretty sure you guys can probably get even a better deal knowing that the "Detroit School District " needs them ASAP!!!. If you guys want to know that it is better to purchase drinking fountains and you can keep for a very long time . Teachers work hard in what could otherwise be described as less ideal situations. Special education still needs an overhaul and children given the special education services they deserve. Nice facilities and fairly quiet. Steps are a little silly which can be disorienting but easy enough to figure out. Wheelchair accessibility was also a little odd with the difference between Floor 1 and 1R, but again, easy to figure out. Apparently they don't allow food or drink in the auditorium which is understandable but may be frustrating.Shawn Squire

Very high ceiling, you feel really good inside. The study room has floor window which cozy sunshine can penetrate the room in the afternoon. On the top floor it provides turkey meals every Thanksgiving for students.田伟
