20 Best Medical Assistant Programs In Des Moines, IA (2022 Updated)

Writing a review for UNMC is an emotional task for me because they have been there for my mom and family through life, sickness, recovery, health, and even death. In all they've been there for they did right, without judgement or bias, and with care, hope, and support. I live in Kansas, but I know this hospital and all the towers better than some streets near my home. I've interacted with many specialty doctors, nurses, techs, housekeeping staff, ER, security team members, and so many others. We've experienced teams in Kidney Transplant, Wound Care, Cardiovascular, Cardiology, Ophthalmology, ENT, Derm, Cancer Center, and the Comfort Care Team. I can tell you that these teams are here because they love what they do. If you're considering UNMC as a new place to care for your needs I would do so without hesitation. When my mom moved they were so helpful in her transition to Kansas. Without them we'd be lost. We will miss each of her teams, their knowledge, and their care. It was so hard to leave.Tam E

Very disappointed in care provided. Nursing seems sorely under staffed. Although they frequently have cell phone in hand. Communication between staff (doctors and nursing staff)is lacking. Communication of providers and patients is insufficient. Facility is dirty dusty and run down. And should we talk about HIPPA….nothing to talk about….it doesn't exist there. Hep locks do not get flushed even after several days….negligent much? Showers/bed baths not offered to patient even after 3 days in-house. Are they trying for some nosocomial infections?S B

Today I went to Nebraska medical center and the eye clinic. The people that are very friendly and nice it's clean has three levels. The doctor I seen seem very knowledgeable and was very concerned with my eye condition it was funny when we first pulled up and parked in the first row there was a broom next to the handicap sign made me laugh remind me of handicap which parking. Someone probably had clean snow off their car with the broom and left it there.Karen Beautiful

Nice buildings, TERRIBLE instructors, especially in their medical-focused science programs. Instructors changing assignments, deleting submitted work, and failing entire sections of classes.. Instructors that play the "gotcha" game, attempting to fail and trick you on material and assignments, as opposed to trying to teach. Have professors ripping material directly from other programs and having you do it for assignments (other universities) that still has other universities logos all over it. Also, you're on your own, admin will not respond / is not on your side. I would spend my money and time elsewhere if AT ALL possible. Had an instructor claim they have the "best program in the state" and then fail to respond by email for about 3 months, and had to get Dean involved. Feels like I'm interacting with high school students for professors. I am from out of state and it turns out Iowa has basically no resources regarding escalating issues with professors – what they say goes and that's it, regardless of how inappropriate or unproductive. DO NOT trust your education to this program and these instructors.Rone Parent

Kirkwood is a fantastic school with high level talent. The college seems to view itself as a service to paying customers (a bafflingly rare delight), and offers courses that inspire good work and deep thinking. Kirkwood *far* exceeds any other educational institution I've attended. The admission process is transparent, the courses you're paying for are clearly outlined, the requirements of the course are made plain at the start of the term… man. I can't say enough nice things. And you know what? I never once had anyone correct me to say "Call me 'Doctor' ". That may not mean much to you, but it meant a hell of a lot to me. Do yourself a favor and go here for your first two years with an eye to transfer on, should that be your aim. You're not just getting more for your money. You're flat out getting more.Claiming Light

Least understanding faculty. Called 6 hours after my deadline to cancel a test that I paid $95 dollars to take. The program director for CE was rude and condescending stating that she would not refund my exam because I was simply 6 hours past the 24 hour deadline. This school is clearly just out to rob people of their money and it’s sickening. I’ve had nothing but a bad experience and it’s crazy to me because at one point I was so excited to attend. I was charged 600 dollars because they weren't able to post the required material for for a class, until the day before the class was suppose to start. When talking to them on the phone, it was like I was talking to a incoherent baboon, one second they say I'm talking to the wrong office. Asked to get transferred to the right office, then hear them say this is the right office. If you have a stereotype of an illiterate Iowans, then this place fits it like a glove. Don't waste your time, go to a real community college, not some redheaded step child who's parents are inbred framers. Can't emphasis how bad the administration is.Steven Bell

I was in a head on car accident in September 2020. I have injuries with my back, neck, shoulders and basically my entire body still hurts and I have chronic pain. I started coming to Capital Chiropractic in December 2021. After just a few visits with Corrine my back and neck are starting to feel better. My headaches are no longer every single day but once or twice a week. When I do my excersices it does help relieve the pain. To tell you the truth, I was a bit skeptical about the initial simple exercises Sarah prescribed for my neck, shoulder and back pain. But after 3 weeks of intense pain that wouldn't subside, I was willing to give anything a shot. Within a few days of doing these exercises (I can't even call them exercises, they're so easy and not time consuming!), the pain was almost completely gone. Best of all, she listens and adjusts based on what my body is telling us. She treats me as an intelligent adult, explaining what she's doing and what she recommends and why. Thee best chiropractic care I've received in years! I was referred by a coworker d/t back, arm and chest pain. Went through so many tests to find out it was in fact, a musculoskeletal issue, so I went and seen Dr. LoRang and he has been so knowledgeable, helpful and most of all kind. Professional, confident, informational, intelligent, good listener, comfortable and friendly! (This guy actually knows what he is doing) I am usually very nervous at chiropractors. Jake is awesome, he treats you as friend and family and makes you feel at home. His staff is also very polite and friendly. Every person's body is different and Jake knows exactly how to find and work on what needs to be done–without hurting you!! He makes sure to get as much information about what you need worked on, before he just jumps right in blind. Jake asks and listens and he is really good at explaining things. I have learned a lot from him. My issues have noticeably improved and continue to improve! I was in so much pain before seeing him and no other chiropractors have come even close to how much he has helped me so far. Jake is also stellar at working with your schedule. The only thing I am nervous about now is, when I move, if I can locate a chiropractic doctor even half as good as him. I have had a great experience at 21st Century Rehab in Carlisle! I’m rehabbing from a total knee replacement 2 weeks ago. Matt Wanderscheid has coached me through the process of strengthening my quads and has helped me to greatly increase range of motion in my knee. I have made really good progress and have recently been able to ride a stationary bike. I went to Northpark Dental for a checkup and in need of restoration work. My checkup went fine and we scheduled an extraction for only a few days later, which I was very grateful for. Dr. Trung and the staff were kind, patient and made sure I was comfortable every step of the way. The extraction went well and I have had no unexpected complications. However, I was in a great deal of pain for the first 36 hours after the procedure. I have had gastric bypass surgery and because of this, I can’t take NSAIDS as pain relievers. I let the staff know this at both appointments. I was advised to take Tylenol for the pain. Today when Dr. Trung followed up with me to see how I was, he advised that he was unable to prescribe opiates, but offered to prescribe something to help with the swelling, which would in turn likely help with the pain. I’ll keep this in mind for next time I’m in for work so I can ask for them. I plan on taking my kids here for checkups – the care I’ve received has been great. Today was the first time I had a dentist check on me personally. That alone is worth 5 stars.Jodee Wedgeworth

I hadn't been to the dentist in a few years so I was rather nervous about the work I may need done. Dr. Trung and his staff made me feel so comfortable and identified with clear explanations on the plan to get my teeth back to good health. I've had a couple of cavities filled and even had a tooth that need some emergency attention and they were able to get me right in. Most importantly I didn't feel a thing when given shots (Dr. Trung is truly amazing at what he does!) and my smile has never looked better! I have had the pleasure of seeing both Dr. Babor and Dr. Phan. This office has to be the most personable office I have ever been to, starting with the front desk when you walk in the door. It is clear they truly care about their patients and they show genuine care and concern for everyone that walks in their front door. I was unable schedule an appointment for several years with Advanced Family Dentistry, but upon my return it seemed like it was a very short time as the staff was welcoming and anxious to reestablish the concern for my dental mouth health. The wait time was minimal from the time I arrived and when the hygienist escorted me to her work area. She was truly concerned and was anxious to up date and improve my dental care and insure my were healthy or required additional attention. When doctor entered the room she reviewed what the hygienist had found and discussed with me any concerns I had. I’ve suffered from dry eyes since Lasik surgery 10+ years ago. Have been to numerous doctors all over the US with the same outcome. They try every drop and act like they don’t believe it when I tell them my eyes get worse and all goopy. I had pretty much just given up when I found Premier Vision Clinic on a dry eye Facebook group. Dr. Denhartog actually ran a bunch of tests no other doctors have done and for the first time I feel like we have a plan of treatments instead of just more drops and hoping they work. I feel like she really educated me on what is causing my issues too. In the first couple months now after I started my new regimen including IPL my symptoms are so much better. For the first time in a long time I’m hopeful. I also am using their skin care products as I found out my beauty counter brand was actually bad for dry eyes and my skin has definitely improved. It’s expensive but really not much more than the department store brand I was using and a little goes a long way. If you are desperate for relief of your dry eyes, this is definitely the place. I have suffered for years from dry eye disease (Sjogrens) for years. After seeing several Drs. And a referral to Iowa city I saw a colleague of Dr. DenHartog at iowa city who referred me to her clinic in Clive. The two talked about all the issues I had and all the treatments and procedures I had there. Dr. Jennifer DenHartog’s staff is so pleasant very helpful Dr. DenHartog turned my life around she has all the new treatments out there for dry eye and she’s always explains things so well. She always goes the extra mile and keeps herself so informed on all the new treatments/procedures. Dr DenHartog suffers from dry eye too so she understands what her patients go through and is compassionate about helping her patients. 02.22.22-the Optimal Health Chiropractic staff are very helpful, kind and knowledgeable. Had another great visit yesterday!!! I am continuing to live pain free!! I have been so appreciative and pleased with the care I have received over the past year. I have gone from barely being able to move at the beginning of my care to moving freely including up and down stairs!!! This is the best place i have received care!!! I have had knee pain for several months, so I jumped on the chance to lessen my pain for just $49 when I saw the Optimal Health special advertised on Facebook. I was skeptical when I went there, but I thought it couldn't hurt for that price. They did 2 different types of treatment, the first of which afterwards I felt no difference. After the 2nd one, I felt very little pain when I stood up. A week later, I'm still not having much pain in my knee. I have one more different type of treatment left to do, which I will have done in another week. This is also included in the special price. I'm very optimistic this time. The staff was super friendly and helpful. They explained in detail everything that was going on, and made sure I was comfortable. The folks at optimal health chiropractic are the best! I’ve been extremely busy and have not been able to be seen there in quite some time. When I returned today they remembered me by my name, and treated me like family. On top of that I was able to get the proper adjustments to put me back on track. I felt they handled me as if I am stupid and cannot make a decision for my child when I tried to decline x-ray. Pro Kinetix is unmatched in its quality of care and individuated attention to patients. I have been working with Dr. Jon in recovering from a torn meniscus. Initially I came in with so much pain that I was having difficulty completing range of motion in my movements and in doing day-to-day activities ( especially with working out). Following the program that he gave to me, I have not only been able to recover, but I've also been able to thrive in my day-to-day activities and in my workouts. I had the pleasure of receiving fantastic PT from Dr. Jon for my hip, knee and toe pain. I had asked for help at the small gym I went to, with just oh I'll send you an email of some stretches to do, which I never received and was never asked how I was doing. So, I sucked it up and called upon Pro+Kinetix and was paired with Jon. Which was a perfect fit, he listened, did a physical evaluation and made sure I understood why this domino effect was happening. He did great at demonstrating the stretches and workouts he wanted me to do. I worked out almost daily along with running. I had a mileage goal set in place for the year and with his help I was able to finish PAST my goal pain free. Key is to keep up with the program he gives you, even if you have graduated out, so you don't go back to square one. This was the second time I have went to athletico and worked with paul. First time was for my back. Second time was for my shoulder. Going in meeting Paul and working with him has been the best experience with any physical therapy place I have ever had. The whole staff was very kind and courteous at every visit. I went in after surgery this time and was in a lot of pain with my shoulder. Working with Paul was very pleasant. At my last visit I walked out of that clinic with no pain in my shoulder. Nicole Nelson is the best physical therapist I have ever seen. I have gone to her for several issues, and each time she assesses the situation and digs in and fixes thing. I have self referral, so I do not even go to the Dr when something is wrong with a muscle or tightness. She figures out what needs to be tweeked, and gives me daily exerises to do and we get the problem resolved. Each time I have seen her she has been topnotch. As soon as I arrived at Des Moines River Dental Care in Carlisle I was greeted by an amazing staff. When I entered the room I had a great experience with the Dental Hygienist who assured me that I would be in good hands and would have a great plan in place for me by the time I left. I would like to recommend this dental practice for its outstanding service on all levels. Dr. Villiard and his staff are absolutely wonderful. The environment is relaxing yet still professional. After suffering progressively worsening pain in my left hip, I scheduled an appointment with my doctor fully expecting to be told I needed a hip replacement. Fortunately, my doctor suggested that I schedule an appointment at Breathe. Although I couldn’t imagine what I could gain from this (I’d already diagnosed and attempted to treat myself via Google), I scheduled an appointment. I was absolutely blown away after my first visit with Lily M. She was able to determine that, although the pain was in my left hip, the lack of engagement of muscles on right side was the culprit. I’d spent months (maybe years) compensating for this issue and my left hip/leg was suffering the consequences. Lily taught me how to correct my posture (sitting, standing, walking, etc) and prescribed simple exercises that got my long-neglected muscle firing. This, combined with soft tissue work and some dry needling, resulted in a drastic reduction of my hip pain. After a few appointments, the pain I’d been living with for months was gone. I could walk, sit and, most importantly, sleep without pain. We continued to work on exercises that will help my body stay balanced and strong so I won’t go back to my old, bad habits. I’m now walking 20 miles/week and sleeping great. It’s amazing what you can accomplish when you’re not in pain. 🙂 I’m so grateful to have worked with Lily – in addition to being an exceptional physical therapist, she’s also very kind and down to earth. She did a fantastic job explaining things in a way that was easy for me to understand and also let me decide how I wanted to address some of my issues. Some of the best healthcare I’ve ever received. I leave feeling better not only physically but mentally and emotionally. A lovely environment. I wish they were a bit more inclusive in their care such as being openly queer and trans accepting and showing signs of being welcoming of BIPOC, but I think they lack the education on the issues and perhaps lack motivation to do so. That being said, Kelly, Kristen, and Lily have provided amazing care for me and my loved ones that extends beyond the clinic and into how we live our lives and care for our bodies. They are educated about how mental health affects the body, and talk me through their recommendations and celebrate my growth.Margaret Canero

I have seen several therapists over the past handful of years for different needs, but most recently I have been seeing Libby. Libby is extremely knowledgeable, and can always pinpoint the root of my concerns and how to address them within minutes. Libby is also approachable. I’m always happy with my visit at Dental Associates! I have been coming to Dental Associates for over 10 years and am always treated well by everyone! If you’re looking for the best, ask for Nikki!! She listens to my concerns, explains anything I don’t understand and always takes good care of me. Nikki makes the overall dental experience enjoyable! Dr. Biegert is great too! Dental Associates is a very professional, high quality business that uses the latest technology and equipment in their services. Very surprising to go from decent vision to very poor vision. I was warned about pending dimness of vision due to cataracts. Age related they say. Never gave it much thought. So, choosing Wolfe Eye Clinic was by chance. Big advertising. Still chocked and surprised by the busy waiting room and all the action going from one tech to another. Very thorough. Very efficient. Very surprised by the Wet Macular Degeneration diagnosis that aneeds monthly eye injections!James Stordahl

I so appreciate all the care, compassion and expertise that I have received at the hands of Dr Alleman and his staff. The BEST group of young professionals I’ve ever had the pleasure to have in my life. I’ve Always been TERRIFIED of Dentists all my life because of an awful experience when I was a child, and through the years things haven’t been much better, that is until I walked through the doors of the Bondurant Family Dentistry. From the jump they are they couldn’t have been nicer or made made me more at ease. Then in that chair that we all dread and scares the bee jeeses out of me, but No I sat down and right away they talked to me about anything and everything but my teeth and got me so relaxed that by the time they got to working on my teeth we were old friends. Absolutely love it here! I have had some pretty bad experiences as past dental facilities and the team as Bondurant Family Dentistry made everything quick, easy, efficient and comfortable. One thing I really loved was they put a camera in your mouth and take pictures of your teeth before and after cleaning, and then show you them to compare. By doing this is really helps me know where I need to focus more on when brushing. Shelby and Dr. Whipple made everything extremely comfortable, and didn’t lecture me for 5 minutes on the importance of flossing like most other will (yes, we all know flossing is important but if I’m not already flossing twice daily the odds I will start is not likely when I get yelled at for it). I’m actually looking forward to my next appointment!Carson Wilkins
