This place is a disgrace. The many of the professors refuse to meet outside of their office hours, even when their office hours are during another class. As of now I can count no less than 10 broken vending machines on campus, some that haven't been fixed in 4 months! I've called both CMU and the vendors, and neither one wants to fix the machines. I guess they don't want to make money. The parking meters aren't maintained. I found one of the only available parking spaces near the Univerity Center. It was filled with quarters so much that it couldn't accept any more, so I was unable to pay my meter. You supposedly can pay with an app, but it's only available for iPhone, and I have an android, so i want able to pay that way either. I came out to find I had been ticketed for not paying for a space (I didn't have a student pass at the time). This is an absurd business practice. The bathrooms smell like urine all the time, especially in Pearce Hall and Engineering Technology buildings. I have found the same filth left on the toilets in the bathrooms several days in a row. Considering the volume of traffic, those bathrooms should be cleaned twice a day, but at least once a day. The engineering building is the most frustrating sight on campus. When it rains heavily multiple buckets are used to catch the leaks inside the building. There are almost no places to plug in your phone or laptop because there aren't enough electrical outlets in the common areas, and of the ones that are present, many aren't working or are broken. The only reprieve is an extension cord that someone plugged into the cooling of the first floor to access from the common area on the second floor. Otherwise, in order to charge your phone or computer, you have to sit on the floor like a child playing with his toys because the only outlets available are in the middle of a hallway and are meant for maintenance for cleaning rather than students. Basically, you will not find working electrical outlets in the same place as seating areas on campus. All of the sectional furniture in engineering should have been replaced 5 or more years ago, it's all stained and broken down or torn to the point that goodwill probably wouldn't accept it. There are no study rooms in the entire building, making it hard to find places to work on group projects without leaving to make room for a class. The printers in this building are a joke. Most of the ones in the classrooms are blinking because they are out of toner, paper, or just gave up on life. When they are working they often aren't accessible to student accounts and I have to go to the front office to print, except that I have to convert whatever I need to print into a pdf because that's all it accepts. I guess it's too much to expect when they don't even know how to install the door stops in the correct place to…eh…stop a door. I will amend this review when I see that my tuition dollars are being used effectively demonstrate basic maintenance and upkeep on campus. Since no one is interested in fixing the problem, hopefully posting here will make this more of a priority for Central Michigan University.christopher chism

I had a great experience attending this School. There is so much diversity here and different ethnic groups. When I was there I lived in Calkins Hall. It was an all girls Hall back then. I learned so much and made so many lifelong friends. It changed me forever as a person. This is a really good School to go to in a small town. There are lots to do. Incredible faculty and staff. I have never had a teacher or Professor take as much interest in students as Dr. Force at Walsh. The academic and career advising staff are incredible as well; always available for questions and on the fly meetings for me. Courses are coordinated in a manor where previously learned concepts are applied to different courses; a great sense of cohesion from one class to the next. Amazing faculty and staff! Being a smaller college students are not treated like a number but part of the AQ family. It is a great place to work with a strong sense of community. The grounds are always kept up by the amazing grounds team. AQ prides themselves on sustainability and it shows! A beautiful campus with many alumni around all the time for good reason. They have a great coffee shop on campus and amazing sports games, if your into that. Let's just do this in bullet points for simplicity. – My best friend was assaulted by his upstairs neighbor in Knol. After they decided not to press charges, Campus Safety told him and his wife to stay away from their own apartment building until the offender had moved out. That's victim blaming. They should have posted a campus safety officer outside the building at all times until the offender left. The victims shouldn't have to leave their own home. – Campus Services is 100% incompetent. Our stovetop fan broke, so they unhooked it, now every time we cook it steams up our whole apartment. My friend's A/C broke last year, so they literally just cut the cord. Two years ago my door frame broke entirely off because the apartment building was in such disrepair, so they just nail gunned it like 30 times. 95% of all the repairs they do are wrong or not done at all. – Chapels are TERRIBLE. I can't tell you how many times I've gone to chapel and not even heard a single verse read. And you can get out of chapels by paying a ten dollar fine per one you miss, so basically they're saying "If you're rich, you don't need to do this mandatory thing". It's like buying indulgences. – They are putting $1.2 million dollar stained glass windows in the new chapel, but the new media facilities we were promised were scrapped almost entirely. This isn't hearsay; they have stated the cost of the new windows repeatedly, including in chapels. As a consolation prize, they gave the audio and video departments a little bit of money to improve the already existing facilities, AKA the recording studio that isn't soundproof and the film department without a proper soundstage. The science department facilities are also deplorable, though I can't speak to specifics as I am not in that department. – The "student contract" is hilariously misguided. Telling students over the age of 21 they can't have a single beer off campus is insane. Do you know how ridiculous it feels to turn down a drink when your PASTOR offers you one? It's not a university's place to punish their students. If the quality of the spiritual content at the university improved, it would naturally attract students with morals the school agrees with. I've given Cornerstone every benefit of the doubt. I was a leader in their "Terra Firma" program, I was an RA, and I've met with the school leaders about the issues I see on several occasions. They consistently have let me down and done inane, nonsensical things to distance me from the school. When people ask where I go to school, I CRINGE when they ask whether they should send their kid there, because I have to be the one to say "No, don't waste your money, if I could do it again I absolutely would not have gone to CU." This is not an indictment of the church. I love the Body of Christ, I love my local church, I love God, and I think Cornerstone is doing a terrible job of representing Christ to the world. Cornerstone gets two stars instead of one because of a handful of the professors. To name a couple, I was educated exceptionally by Randy Miller and Pete Muir of the Media department, and Doug Mohrmann and Andy Smith of the Bible department.Tanner Ward

I've had a great experience at Cornerstone. I believe the professors truly care about our success and they challenge us to think critically about the world we live in. CU does a great job with incoming freshmen and making sure they feel welcome, but there's also campus activities that take place to entertain everyone else. There isn't much of a "party" scene, but I personally like that. We still manage to have a good time on the weekends; we just think of other things to do other than drink away stress. Student Activities hosts events: dances (sometimes downtown, which is really nice), game nights, etc. Dorms also have their own events, like powderpuff, craft nights, Capture the Flag, etc. Also, there's extracurricular clubs and intramurals that keep people busy. Not to mention how there's usually some kind of sporting event that can people can go to. I also really like how we have the option of going to chapel three times a week. There are so many people around the world that would LOVE to have the chapel that CU has and the option of publicly worshipping as a community. They sing songs that are biblically sound (and even popular hymns) and they read scripture occasionally during the worship. The worship teams are ran by students, so it kind of depends on the day. I also have really enjoyed the speakers; we once had a guy come in that works in the prison ministry and his story was really neat. Overall, college is going to be what you make it. If you don't like making new friends and just expect them to fall into your lap, you may struggle. Mostly everyone is friendly and I love the community, but if you isolate yourself from people and only depend on your roommate being your go-to friend and that doesn't happen (luckily my roommates were great my freshmen year)..you really can't blame the school for that. They have great teachers and they try to create a welcoming environment for everyone, no matter what denomination or background you come from. There is less clubs and majors offered (although I think they have a decent variety) than state schools, obviously, but for a private school I think they do their best.Danielle Nelson

Cornerstone has a very good program for adult learners (PGS -Professional and Graduate Studies). Being married with three children, having two jobs, and now being full-time in school, the online accelerated cohort program has been great. It has allowed me to continue to purse my educational goals while not being too overwhelming. Some of the instructors are better than others, but the coursework appears to be set-up similar in all of the courses. This means that all of the courses have a similar feel and there isn't a lot of adjusting from course to course. Grading seems to be mostly left up to the instructors, so that is the only part of the program that takes some adjusting every class. Most classes are five weeks long and incorporate weekly discussion boards, a lot of typed papers, and a group element (normally a project). Each course tries to incorporate a Christian element, normally in the form of discussions, the readings, and in your writing. I also attended GRCC and I have seen some other reviews that said Cornerstone's coursework was easy. Having taken similar classes at both GRCC and Cornerstone (for example, accounting) and I would say the content is similar. For somebody entering into the PGS program like I am, I would suggest being good at writing, because you will be doing a lot of it. I have had a good experience so far at Cornerstone and I recommend it to others on a routine basis.MC

I plan on transferring here to finish my MBA and so far the institute has been awesome, very helpful and informative. One of a few schools if you meet undergrad GPA requirements (3.4+) for their program you can skip the GMAT and gain entry into their program. Extremely fair cost of attendance @ roughly $570 per credit hour. Look forward to continuing this relationship! The professors are amazing. You really have a feeling that they want you to succeed. Once you graduate they really just drop you. I tried working with career services and they only met once then dropped you. Really disappointed in the behavior of no longer a check coming in we no longer care. I have an amazing work history with several degrees but this new degree is transferring over to something new. So I really wanted help in the job search and advice in moving into something different. I wonder what their actual job placement percentage is. I am just so disappointed because it really could be a great school and the professors really have a passion for teaching.Natalie Roe

I attended night classes to try and finish my degree as an adult. I am told that classes during the day are very different. My experience was incredibly frustrating. The professor of my computer class struggled to log in to her computer and often asked me to help answer questions for the class. I took a speech class and the professor did not grade students on an even scale. The highest grade in the class was the student that wrote her entire speech and then read it without ever looking up. You're going to overpay MASSIVELY for an education CC can give. The only thing I credit this school for is the friends I still have from there. They will compromise on Christian values to be more politically correct. And avoid having firm stances on issues to appease all. Constantly changing what the Bible says and church doctrine for PC culture. For classes, 90% you'll never need or use and the professors use it as their time to spread their extremely radical political beliefs. Adding, 90% of professors are hired based on their work in the field and not for teaching ability. Making you buy their expensive textbook for a class and never using it once. You must have their opinions or risk being failed for no reason. By trying to please everyone they make everyone mad and they wonder why enrollment has gone down drastically. Which is also due to the fact of them taking away classes and value while hiking up tuition rates. Lastly, they say they do everything they can to help their graduates succeed. Laughable. Almost no support at all and don't prepare anyone for the real world. For the support after college. That's just them trying to get you to send them more money after you wasted 100k there. Charged me 50.00 dollars for not obtaining a new parking pass (220.00) in my second year. I was not aware I needed to renew it as they do not send out any correspondence to advise students of this. Being a low income student, I sent a vulnerable genuine appeal to the safety department. They denied my appeal and when I asked to talk with someone in person about my situation they simply forwarded me the handbook over and over… for an institution that preaches grace, and compassion, they certainly don’t practice it when it comes to money. My husband was on the nursing wait list for ten years. He is a veteran and a hard worker. He was told the RN wait list was 2-3 years by Sue Helmer. The professors goals are to make students repeat classes for monetary gain. This is what happened to my husband and several of his classmates. Failure is encouraged at this school. Students teach themshelves. My husband have retaken most of his classes because some of his teachers could not find proof of his final grades. Also the office lost his important paper work. He was marked down for failing the classes, and had to retake them over. Cora Beute, and Michelle Richter refused to look into their system, and marked him absent for classes when he was present. The financial aid department charged him twice for many of his classes.The administration took advantage of him having auto pay for classes. He was overcharged several of times. One thing after the next. My husband is now attending Grand Valley University. He had to retake more than seven classes over because some of GRCC classes are not transferable. A bunch of time wasted. My husband regret going to GRCC. I will recommend anyone to run from this scum of a place.护士Diane

Admission staff isn't very helpful. I'm being told on the FAFSA and by others if you live alone you do not have to fill out the parent information field just to call up here and have them tell me that's not the case. I'm in my twenties with my own place. Not seventeen just getting out of HS. I graduated five years ago so why do I need parent info? This is the latest addition though to a list of complaints. Just finally annoyed enough to leave a review. I've been considering for the last few years going to school and I have not committed yet due to personal circumstances. But every time I do seriously set my sights on it I find myself frustrated with the people I end up speaking with. My short experience has been good here. Although parking can be a mess, and often times people's card will not allow them to leave (it lets them in though) and the person on the telecom won't let them out, they want them to back up (when there's 20 cars bumper to bumper in line waiting to leave) and come inside. Or they can pay 4x the regular amount via credit card and then they'll be able to leave right then and there. Unnecessary hassle, a joke considering they're getting thousands of dollars every DAY simply from parking fees alone. Should attend common sensical decency meeting once a year.Patrcia Clemons

Great downtown location along the river. Near bus stops. Look of the building isn't all that modern. The bathrooms are kind of small and hard to find. The elevators/waiting area for elevators are small and cramped with how many people use them during peak times. Study space is right where lots of people wait for elevators. I was here for a conference and they did a great job with everything from catering to the helpful staff. The Eberhard Center is on the river and there is a wonderful outside as you take breaks. There is even easy access to the river walk and walking bridge to catch a breath of fresh air and enjoy life a little. It is a good, modern structure and I recommend it highly.JEFF PETERS

I worked the WGVU PBS phone in pledges on the evening they ran North Ametican Trains. I volunteer on the Coopersville Marne railroad during our event run train rides. The event center is right on the downtown campus for grand valley in grand rapids. It is a very spacious and modern event center in a great location.Lora Boone

I have the interesting challenge of reviewing the college now that I can look back at it a few years after graduation. After taking much of your basic required classes in the much larger, far more happening main campus, you'll begin to take your business courses in a small offshoot location. It is fairly small, only composed of 2 building that you'll call home for a good 2.5 years or so of your bachelors degree. I've heard explanations of why the business students were quarantined away from the far more fun main campus but it still is the same result, you're segregated away from the cool place which really blows. Perhaps they changed it since my time but there's a few demons guarding the gates of admittance to business school. It was universally agreed upon among us students that those demons were, of course, statistics and project management. I've been made aware that they broke statistics into multiple classes since my time, and I don't know if that helped it. I'm not exaggerating when I say statistics single-handedly failed the largest proportion of aspiring business students and I observed a drop-out rate in my stats class of around 1/3 of the entire class. Project Management only had one professor, a man I came to respect through the class, but my god that class was unforgiving. Both Stats and Project Management were requirements to get into business school, you better have a healthy fear of god before you approach them and prepare to give them your all if you don't want to join the many students who fail or drop. So I've covered the demons of business school and that it's a small, cramped location that's pretty boring. That leaves us with you pursuing the rest of your degree, where your classes may vary from mine. I attended pre-covid so perhaps they've fixed this but when I went, a lot of professors would just assign you generic busy work through an online portal. These were entirely busy work, they'd often pull all their questions from online test banks that students would google for easy A's. Just lazy, pointless busywork. I like to imagine covid made them get their act together with that though; their online test bank method to teaching effectively gave the students a degree in googling 101. Overall their professors were typically decent enough, a few duds to be honest but overall a good assortment. For the most part, if you were legitimately trying your best to work hard, the staff would be willing to work with you. That's about it really. You have to dig down, work hard and surprise surprise, you'll make it through business school. What an adventure. I wind up deducting a star because they made this very fun main campus and single out the business students to cram into a couple boring buildings away from the fun. Also, they were very lazy at times with using online test banks as a substitute for real teaching (and they're foolish for thinking their students didn't know how to google test bank answers). All of that knocks off a star in my rating. But I have a lot of love for this school still, and this is a place you can seriously pursue your education. Graduating was a surreal experience, but the best part was seeing colleagues you've studied with and realizing that oh wow, they made it too.Kiff The Kiffing Kiffle

Good place to attend for a 4-year degree. I graduated with a Bachelor of Science from the Arts and Sciences College in June 1994. I majored in chemistry and double-minored in physics and mathematics. At that time, the chemistry department was horrible, but I hear it has improved since the bad professors retired. The physics and mathematics departments were excellent. The area around the university is very nice. I didn't want to go to a 2-year school first and then some credits wouldn't transfer nor did I want to spend an arm and a leg for my education. I got a lot of bang for my buck at this university and still return for occasional walks on their beautiful campus. Definitely recommend.Мат Маркъл

Transportation works well and there is also a career center to assist you during your college time. Yes there is that party reputation, but at the end of the day your academics matter more because that's what will get you a job. I did my undergraduate degree for Marketing here. Attended this school from 1999-2001. Was basically asked not to come back for dropping too many classes. I graduated from a better school. You are on your own here. They don’t care about you, just your money. You are just a number and a number of the staff are quite prejudiced. The black people who attended when I was there were quite immature. My 4 years here have been just traveling from one dumpster fire to the next. From having a business college advisor promise to send an override request form for a class, and when I go in to see her about it she sends out her secretary to tell me that minors don't matter and they aren't required to graduate, to having the vultures at the parking office keep raising their permit prices and then raise ticket prices. Or maybe it was when the financial aid office tried cancelling my loans twice, or perhaps when the Student Senate tried killing off a club I co-founded by denying a budget (even though we checked all the right boxes, we survived). Perhaps it was the professor I had for macroeconomics who the University called up from retirement to fill a vacancy who did nothing but complain about his ex-wife and try to force his political views on us. My experience with the University has been mostly horrible. But, there are a few redeeming qualities and people. My professors in the International Relations, Political Science, and History departments have been outstanding. They're all wonderful and knowledgeable people. My career advisor and counselor has been amazing and she genuinely cares about my success. I can't speak for many other departments, my gen ed professors were all fine, but Seidman doesn't care and the University doesn't care. Also, the University is beautiful and the study abroad experience is simple. So if you come to GV, find a way to study abroad all four years. I work at a place filled with university students from GV, Calvin, Aquinas, and Cornerstone.Time and time again us GV students get to sharing horror stories about our experiences and they all are shocked by the stuff we have to deal with. Sure, they pay lots more, but perhaps that's worth it. I have heard stories about credits not being transferred (even though she triple checked with her program before paying for it), not finding parking even though you spent the $400 for a pass, getting charged $275 in late fees for books that they renewed online, getting robbed (that's not on the University, but come on). Overall, I've enjoyed my time here at GV, but with no thanks to the University. I've made lots of friends, enjoyed almost all my professors, and made great memories. Would give no stars. Professors absolutely do not care about students. They do not even make an effort to get to know you. Essentially, you are a social security number in a lecture hall. Administration seems more concerned with the ways they can take your money than providing the best education for their students. NURSING STUDENTS BEWARE: Unless you achieve a 4.0 GPA I can guarantee you will not make it into the program. The nursing program here only cares about those who are at the top of their academics and seem to forget that bedside manner is just as important as being able to successfully complete the coursework. This school's total lack of diversity and the cliques make it nearly impossible to make friends and form study groups. Furthermore, the school seems more concerned with the statistics of their D2 sports teams than they are with how they prepare students for their careers. If you are a top notch athlete, I think you will fit in quite well. If you are an ordinary joe like myself, I would suggest you go elsewhere because nobody here will think of you any farther as a social security number providing funding.Nick99

Terrible school with even worse administration. They do nothing to help students. During registration I was told that I should quit my job (b/c it's 3rd shift) so that I could take more courses in the afternoon and go full time. They made no offer to pay my bills, except that I should take out a larger loan for that. I overheard another "adviser" telling a student that she too should quit working because she had to focus on school. They feed you this script to just get you to spend more money at the school but offer no way to help you pay, except for you to take on more debt. After a few years here (its the closes univ to where I live so didn't have much of a choice) my adviser went on leave. I was NEVER notified so I had to go digging. Come to find out, I now have to wait to graduate. This school is a waste of time and money.Amber W

As a current Ferris State student, I would highly recommend to NOT come here. Don’t waste your time and money here. It is extremely overpriced for the quality of the college. The advisors are terrible, and don’t help you stay on track with your classes and requirements. This is tough for an incoming freshman who needs that guidance to succeed and achieve their goals. I actually still don’t know who my advisor is to this day. A high majority of students in my classes don’t know who their advisors are either. The wifi is also terrible here. Half of my classes are online, and the only place where the wifi works is at your dorm. And half of them time the wifi at the dorm doesn’t work either. This is very inconvenient for online classes, especially when there are weekly quizzes and exams online. If the wifi doesn’t work and it kicks you out of your exam or quiz, some professors don’t even want you to tell them. They’ll give you a zero. One of my professors was actually pretty rude about it online, my FIRST week of college. She told us if that happens, that we need to go to IT. She made it very clear that she doesn’t want to hear about it either. Another thing is that all incoming student are REQUIRED to take a freshman class here. Whether your a freshman or a transfer student. That class is the most useless class ever. All we talk about is Ferris resources and study tips. It’s pathetic that we have to PAY MONEY for it. If I knew about this I definitely wouldn’t have attended Ferris state. Please listen to me when I tell you to NOT come here. I wish I would have been told about this information beforehand. ALSO — my suite mate just moved out last week, and the hall staff told me that I’d have a 24 hour notice if someone else were to move in. I JUST found out someone was moving in by seeing them in the hallway. I have NO email, NO communication at all about this, like they had promised. Take this as a prime example of how HORRIBLE THIS COLLEGE IS!!!Kaylee Cavis

My daughter will be a new freshman this fall and we just attended her orientation. The students who ran the orientation (yes students ran most of it) were great. They were all very positive friendly and helpful. The Arts and Sciences staff were also extremely helpful. She was able to get the classes she wanted. Also, she disagreed with one suggestion and they took the time to listen to her and ended up agreeing with her.Marnee Grossbauer
