20 Best Masters Programs In El Paso, TX (2022 Updated)

UTEP as university does not rank at all in either the QS, Times Higher Education or AWRU World University Rankings. Hence you do not go to this university to be competitive within academia nor expect career compensation on a commensurate monetary level as a Top Tier or even 100 ranked university. For those interested in careers in National Security or Intelligence, UTEP is one of the IC ACE (IC Centers for Academic Excellence) under the DIA. If you examine the current list of schools who classify, all with the exception of Penn State are sub-par in terms of academic ranking, reputation and overall competitiveness. As such, you should NOT expect to be recruited by premier alphabet federal agencies such as the CIA, ODI, FBI or DIA. The so-called meet and greet sessions with organizations such as the CIA are just for PR. Read A Curriculum of Fear by Nicole Nguyen. The IC ACE program is just an extension of the Milton High School program at a secondary level and subsequently proof of further militarization of academia. See Prof. David N. Gibbs research. UTEP NSSI program will not prepare you adequately for a position at an alphabet agency. I have direct experience in terms of the interview process and this includes two Five Eyes countries intelligence services. I would strongly advise having an established military background with an appropriate MOS, preferably working INT with high level clearance and exposure to analysis. Foreign language acquisition is mandatory. Being or becoming a polyglot is an enormous plus. Military is valuable for the vetting process and indoctrination. Finally I would also suggest majoring in fields of specialty as opposed to a generic umbrella like liberal arts program such as Intelligence studies. I would also suggest overseas exposure. Long term. Think Exchange student for extended periods. Total immersion including culturally and linguistically. Travel, gain first hand experience and real world knowledge. My final critique with UTEP is the faculty. None have applicable real world intelligence experience. Some have military background which is not the same as in the civilian world working for an agency. I can get more real world knowledge reading the articles written by ex-CIA McGovern or Philip Giraldi at Consortium News or watching Richard Steele on YouTube droning on about the need for total all source open intelligence as a reform for the CIA. This is a problem at UTEP and probably the entire IC ACE program. In fact, this was addressed in the Washington Post article, "Colleges Must Be Intelligent About Intelligence Studies" written by ex-CIA, professor of History, Nicholas Dujmovic. This was followed by a limited response from two UTEP professors entitled, "Can colleges teach intelligence? Three security studies professors argue they can, and should" I seriously suggest you READ BOTH. Pay special attention to the second follow up response comments. There are 14 comments including Dr. Dujmovic's timely response which adequately confirms my own beliefs and experience. as he correctly states, "professional academics, with little to no actual intelligence experience, who have an interest in perpetuating the degree programs they run." The additional comments are of equal merit as they brutally confront the apparent hypocrisy of the such academic programs from what genuinely appears to be INT insiders with both military and civilian intelligence experience. On a final personal note, I would like to express my disdain for the program's coordinator, Carmen B. Medellin whose has shown to be completely inconsiderate and rude to student needs and inquiries.Merauder

The school is good overall. They have enough classes so that people are not desperately trying to get registered for their class like they do in California. They have a wide range of degree programs you can choose. It is a commuter school, but still there is a lot of student life, activities and pride. University is what you make of it. You can go and leave each day without talking to anyone, or you can go and make lots of friends and join clubs making this the best years of your life. I read some of the comments that say that the professors don't answer questions and that they act like celebrities. I say talk to the dean, you are paying for your education they need to answer your questions. Of course don't be that person that tries to take over the class trying to feel smart asking question after question. Also there is a degree of learning that comes from in class teaching, but students also have to study on their own based on the guidance they get in class. How many hours do people really study? In regards to getting a degree, please don't get thousands of dollars into debt for a liberal arts degree unless you have some plan that will allow you to pay back your loans. It is no one but the students fault if they choose a useless degree. You guys should know what degrees will allow you to get a job after graduations and which ones are just going to look nice on your wall. At the end of the day, there are many Universities around the country, if you don't like it, go to another one or don't complain that you didn't get accepted anywhere else and you are stuck.Carlos Contreras

This University offers a beautiful campus. I enjoyed the scenery. On the other hand the University is awful. The structure and system of the University is poor. The staff within most departments lack knowledge. You are constantly being directed to different locations in order to resolve an issue. I wanted to change my major midway through the semester and I seriously had the worse time changing it. Let's just say, it is still the same major. I am unhappy at this University, the professors although some good, seem as if they just show in order to receive their check. My first two years, 70% of my professors were extremely anal and dealt with giving outrageous curves because the whole class was failing. The reason why everyone was failing was mostly because of the lack of teaching. Yes, it isn't always the professors but the students as well, I know, but when 95% of the class is below a 70, we have a problem. At this point I'd rather invest my money into a community college to rap up my basics. Give UTEP a try, but I am almost positive you won't be too happy.Austin Carson

I'm class of 2017 at Americas High school moved from El Dorado to avoid their drug problem and their multiple fights. Americas is calmer and a safer more relaxed enviorment but when it comes to academics Teachers nor' Administration care about their students. My teachers do nothing but sit on their computers all period while the students are just on their phones or messing around w. eachother. Out of 8 classes I actually learn from maybe 2 or 3. Ghetto or not, school spirit dead or somewhat alive, football team losses a lot or wins a few, it doesn't matter. The experience you gain from coming here is by my opinion the best. Experience through education is great with awesome teachers and programs that support you all the way. Hanging out with friends after practice or ditching some classes and pep-rallies to go out and forget school for a blast. My only regret is transferring from this school, and not having to graduate a highlander with my bros. This school is the best, I will miss you! X)Red

They hire teachers who are unsuitable to actually teach. For example, there's a speech teacher named Ms. Holguin who is just horrible. As a teacher & a person. She's rude & disrespectful towards each and every one of her student and for absolutely no reason. I wish I would have dealt with the staff at Ft Bliss from the start. Unfortunately I was directed to the facility on the east side based on my degree program. The adviser at this facility, Nancy Whitman, is like a crooked salesman. She will say whatever is necessary to get you in the door and by the time you've realized that she's led you astray, she will claim to have no recollection of what she said. She will use the system or paperwork as her scapegoat to evade being held accountable for her poor advising. The sad thing is that she is the only adviser there, so there's no avoiding her. The east facility doesn't care about the future of their students. They are more concerned with their numbers. I reached out to the staff at Ft Bliss for help and they were amazing, but it would have been difficult to come back from the damage that had already been done. Take my advice and do everything possible to avoid the east side location. Due to the horrendous experience with this adviser, I have chosen not to continue with Park at all. Thankfully I have found another university that is a better fit for me and where there are intelligent staff members that truly care.melissa collins

I’ve been going to Western Tech for the Diesel program for a little over a year now, almost heading out and honestly I would do it all again. This was by far the best life decision I made. The school isn’t perfect but like everyone and everything there’s always room for growth. Everything about this school is amazing ! Staff actually seem like they want to be there and don’t hate their jobs. They go above and beyond to make sure you have a good experience at their school. They would even text me to make sure i’m doing good which you can’t say all schools do 😀 Unfortunately i dropped from my classes which they give you a full refund within the first 14 days which is awesome. The process was smooth and easy and the lady who helped me cancel “ Leticia Moreno” was super nice and non judge mental and even gave me a soda & snack. I got my Associate's Degree back in December. No complaints. Decided to enroll in their Bachelors and finish up. I signed paperwork for an April start date on Tuesdays and Thursdays. I arrive on my start date only to be told oops, we forgot to tell you that you don't start until June and you'll be going on Mondays and Wednesdays. No professionalism. Lots of sorries, but no remorse. Now without adequate break times, we're no longer allowed to eat in class. This place has become a greedy money making institution with overpriced cafeteria food that they are forcing their students to have to eat if they want to get through their day.Amber Le Roy

My boyfriend comes to this college and I laugh at him all the time there basically stealing his money he was supposed to get 2000 back because the pell grant over paid so the college decided to add that money for the next semester which they have no right to touch it, but I called other great colleges and let the Pell grant know what is happening he will get his money back, military veterans stay away from here is this even a certified college?Sylvia W

What a wonderful school…advanced placement curriculum…Radford works the students's backsides off academically and physically…standard PE for two weeks and swimming for two weeks…junior Olympic pool. Highly competent reading specialist on staff – brought two grandchildren up three grade levels in 10 months – both had been in top rated public schools and could not read…Radford has saved these two by teaching them intellectual discipline coupled with honesty and personal integrity. Science is pushed. Radford puts the icing on the cake for parents who teach self control, self respect, and concern for others at home. Food at lunch in the dining room is served family style with teacher as table monitor…regular metal flatware and plates, no plastic, and is fresh and prepared in the kitchen…balanced and nutritious…better than many children get at home…notable, proper table manners are taught and practiced daily. In a nutshell, Radford is developing children into good citizens with the tools necessary to succeed and contribute, Radford's current Principal and Vice are superb and can't be surpassed…parents and students should be thankful for their leadership. We love Radford! Top notch education combined with many extracurricular activities keep my kids involved and interested. This is a small yet welcoming community where many parents participate and volunteer. The principal greets everyone by name–kids and parents alike–and often serves as the crossguard. Because of its size, students can be in sports, band, theater and clubs all at once. Lunch time is like no other – it is a dining experience. First off let me start off with that I did not go to school here. The reason I'm writing this review is because everyone that I've met that has gone to this school and somehow managed to graduate does not know how to spell. I mean how can you graduate high school and not know how to read? I asked them what kind of math they learned and they didn't even know what math was! I was astonished! I said "Jeez, you know, they really ought to be teaching kids how to read!" I guess they just hand out diplomas to anyone these days. My Abuelo went there and graduated however he passed away my best friend went there about 25 years ago and people report that a girl committed suicide by jumping off the fourth floor. He thought it was "BS" however he have seen blood on the bathroom walls before and they claim that it was just grease. Also when he was after school alone, people and him have heard and seen a girl that looked depressed. The school tries to cover it up. The education is great, but the history is bad!!Nicholas

I’m going to miss this place so much. I graduated the Esthetician program here at Milan on Friday and I’m saddened that it came as fast as it did. My instructor Brianda Rayas is absolutely phenomenal! Like there is literally nothing that I could say negatively about her. She’s VERY knowledgeable about this profession, answers all of the students questions in depth to where we completely understand it… and if we don’t, she gives us a lesson about it as a class in a demo for hands on information! She never misses a class unless it’s an absolute emergency, she’s always on time… making sure we have everything we need, VERY professional, and always keeps a smile on our face. It’s just a joy to be there every day, she makes it so fun and that’s what makes me miss it there already. She’s got such a love for her profession that it makes us motivated to be the absolute best we can be. I’ll miss you, Mrs. Brianda! I manage Nicholas Reyes Hair Salon, a high end hair salon, on the west side of El Paso and have been working with the staff at Milan for well over a year now after reaching out to build a relationship with the school and create a pipeline of talented graduates in to the salon. We hired our first graduate from Milan, recommended to me by Cortney Bruns, and he has been working with us for almost four months. He just graduated last month and passed his final exam yesterday and we could not be happier with his performance!! This is 2nd time I go to Milan Institute of Cosmetology for a hair color because my hair was very brassy & I needed to tone the yellow tone out of hair .On both occasions I spoke to student & their instructor of what I wanted done. I was very pleased with my hair color turnouts & cut & style. The students are so sweet & definitely listen to what you want done & the instructors are also hands on & very attentive. Bullying is taken to a whole new level. I fully understand safety. However, a child who does not like someone merely has to state that the child they don't like was overheard saying something about shooting (talking to someone about video games) and the police haul the child out of class, literally dump bookbag out, search them, and put them in ISS. IF they find out during school hours. If it is after school that it is reported, they come to your house and search his room and ask if you have any weapons. I am a recent graduate from Southwest University. I graduated in March of 2021 with my AAS MA. I was very nervous to enroll in school in my 40's. Southwest University is an AMAZING school that cares about the success of their students. After working in the Healthcare Field, I decided to re-enroll in Southwest University to get a Bachelor's of Science in Healthcare Administration. I was apprehensive about enrolling again in school. I had an appointment with Ruby Ramirez who is an Admissions Advisor on campus. She not only answered all my questions, but she welcomed me back to Southwest University and made me feel great for pursuing my education. I cannot wait to begin this new milestone in my life and I am super excited that many of my classes from my AAS MA program actually transferred and will be accepted for my new degree plan. I come to this barbershop almost every week and clarisa is one of the most consistent barbers in the shop. My hair can be difficult to line up and she is the only one there that can guarantee a clean line up for me. Also she does a phenomenal job with the fades that she gives my son and I. I took my nephew to get himself registered today, not a lot of students there so that was a plus. I wish they would post a banner or posters outside of Admissions and the Student Services Center, directing incoming freshman students to their "First-Year Experience Center", located in the "A" building, room A2430. We could saved ourselves a lot of time and wandering if there were clearer directions. I haven't been a brand new freshman since 2007 and the last time I stepped foot on campus was in 2018 so A LOT has changed! My nephew asked some receptionist lady in the Counseling center for the next step as a brand new freshman and all she told him was to go to A2430 in the other building across the way. Apparently, she mumbled over the room number and my nephew was more nervous than anything so he didn't ask to clarify. We found it, but being that a majority of incoming freshman are fresh out of high school, they don't have the knowledge or initiative to ask BC they are so accustomed to their parents handling the show. Maybe some "You are here" brochures readily available at the entrances of these buildings or the banners/posters I briefly mentioned may help ease these students into a self-reliant state of mind. Other than that, the campus is looking great with all the new additions and amenities.Bri Armendariz

School experience was great and I have fond memories from friends, acquaintances, and professors I've met and had the opportunity to work with, but given I graduated May 2020 it feels like they didn't even try to reimburse us for missing out on the whole year due to the pandemic. No in person ceremony planned for this year or any time later, no 2020 graduation merch or tassels, no nothing! Feels like a slap to the face after everyone's hard work to just be swept under the rug. Just called and they already have merch and ceremonies planned for 2021 so this is honestly a huge bummer. Also had to fight tooth and nail through phone and email just to get ANY information about what to expect in 2020 in terms of classes and virtual commencements (still didn't get any information about the damn Spring 2020 virtual commencement until I saw the YouTube video just this month.) I know this pandemic has been extremely hard on everyone, but it would be really helpful if more information was available to the students and even staff so no one is left in the dark or feeling forgotten, especially when our hard work and money is involved.Chao “CocoMint” Melody

I went to the college for one of my classes. Im happy to see that they have securely set up their own precautions towards the covid outbreak with the bare minumum amount of staff and very few students numbering in ones hands. While i would say it's not exactly abandoned, i personally just feel a bit of lacking with the vending machines and i find it that new students who dont know the college like the back of their hand will find themselves easily lost without a map or a guide.Esgon 401
