20 Best G.E.D Programs In San Francisco, CA (2022 Updated)

Laney college culinary program is wonderful, while back, I was looking for a culinary schools around and close by city of Oakland, I found, San Francisco cooking school, CIA and Laney College. CIA’s Tuition on full time basis was about $47,000 for all students, San Francisco cooking school tuition is about $25,000, , then, Laney’s tuition: $46.00 per semester unit…next, I started comparing each school’s culinary programs, they all were very similar with a very little insignificant differences. I visited each school as well, honestly, CIA school, has a much fancier buildings but, not for $47,000 tuition, same as San Francisco cooking school, therefore, for my budget and goal, Laney College was evidently and unmistakably was my first and only choice. I signed up in their Culinary baking program, instructors are fantastic, school’s facilities are moderate, reasonable and very much adequate for this program, equipment are the same as other mentioned schools that I visited, and much better than “acceptable” that I thought it would be, most importantly, instructors are one better than the others, not to mention, I finished the baking program while back, now, I am just finishing up 3rd semester of their cooking program. I've been doing the baking and pastry program for three semesters now and it has exceeded my expectations. First of all, the core classes are 90% hands-on work. The other 10% are mainly lectures about the history of the product you are about to recreate. The chef instructors are extremely knowledgeable in the industry and will help you guide your way into a successful career. Many people coming into the program are trying to get their foot in because they don't have any experience. My first semester I was able to get a job in catering with help from my instructors. Even if you're not looking for a career, this program can help improve your skills in the kitchen. However, they will still prepare you as if you are going to work at a kitchen. They also offer a course in the savory side if baking and pastries isn't what you're looking for.Nathan Ung

I have just completed the baking curriculum of the Laney College Culinary Arts program. It was one of the most enjoyable and rewarding educational experience I have ever had. The program will prepare you for a successful career in the baking and services industry. The program is tailored to train anyone with absolutely no experience to become a professional baker. The classes provide real world hands-on experience in the preparation of baked goods. The instructors are professionals with many years of experience in the industry. They will make every effort to make your experience enjoyable and rewarding. Lastly you cannot beat the cost of the program. This is my Story: Being an International Student at Santa Fe College is the worst thing that can happen to you. Besides that your tuition is 3 times more just for being an immigrant, they don't offer scholarships. Why we are not allow to get help? because we are just seem as a profit. Also, we do not get the benefit to choose how many classes we want to take because we are "required" to be full-time. We can only take one class online for semester. This post is about my tuition and what they did to me at Santa Fe. I apply for a student loan because I couldn't pay the ridiculous amount of money, but what happened is that the "amazing people" at financial aid didn't processed my loan, so my classes got drop. I talked with everyone at Santa Fe for help, even trying a payment plan but the last day to add/drop classes just passed. I brought all my papers signed of my loan to financial aid, and they told me that nothing can be done to help me. They just play with me sending me to person to person making lose my time and nobody helped me. Whenever I went to cashier's office and told what my situation was this lady after treating me horrible told me "we don't care about your situation, we just need the $6,000 today or you can start saying "goodbye" to your visa. I feel really glad about the help that they didn't give me, by the end of this semester I am going to be back in Venezuela because they did nothing to help me keep my visa status. SF College is nice and affordable for local kids; however, they are not at all equipped to handle international students' concerns. Staff that students interact on a day to day basis are made up of mostly underpaid student workers, and their answer to every question is a default "No". It is really frustrating. You can immediately see and feel the difference between this small state college and your typical large, internationally experienced university. Nonetheless, in-house faculty do a decent job teaching courses. I can't say the same about Santa Fe's adjunct instructors. Some are truly clueless (though it is not their fault; poor adjunct instructors are so underpaid that it made my jaw drop when I heard how much they make per semester). As a student who wants to actually learn the material, your best bet would be to register early for courses based on the instructors offering them. Overall, Santa Fe College is an affordable stepping stone to a larger University, such as their next door neighbor UF. I suppose it would also be a nice option for regional kids from lower to middle-income families. But that's about all the credit I can give to Santa Fe College. Culturally, it is lacking diversity. Went there in 2012 right after HS from Orlando. I went there to hopefully transfer to UF. The system failed me. The guidance counselors did nothing to guide me, I got depressed there and failed. I was a very good student in high school(top 5% with both IB and AP-full coursework) until 12th grade a personal event happened and I stopped attending and starting failing but still graduated. This is why I had to go to SF college as my gpa dropped to be able to to to UF. I had a 2030 on the SAT in HS as well. I was highly able to do well at SF but they failed me by not giving proper guidance or support and it ruined my whole college career as they didn’t accept my appeals for late withdrawal and I was stuck with a horrible GPA that ruined my life.Anonymous Someone

Overall, an okay community college experience so far from 2019 to 2022 (I took some summers off). The registration process for me was a nightmare. OpenCC upon some of the other processes were buggy, nonfunctional, or unclear. Despite this, I have to give them slack as when I was applying they were revamping their websites significantly. There's a mixed bag of good and bad staff. Some professors will be insanely rude, not understanding, and sometimes not even lecture properly on the topic at hand. Other professors will be really kind, understanding, and actively willing to work with you. Always look up the professor on Rate My Professor!!! Eservices, Canvas, and Counseling are atrocious. Eservices has been buggy at times or down for multiple hours. Canvas is usually a decent online learning tool, but sometimes it can get buggy and is not always accessibility friendly (as seen by not having a dark mode for example). I recall a time when Canvas was down due to the host servers, which are owned by Amazon, were completely offline. Counseling is not always helpful in guiding you to where to go next, will sometimes not even answer calls nor emails, and can get really busy (even with the switch from the old building to the Welcome and Support Center). I suggest looking up some information yourself on ARCs website first before talking to counselors, such as course catalogs or what classes you might take for a specific associates degree. I wish that counseling would still give out PHYSICAL course catalogs, but it is what it is. Finance is usually okay for parking passes, but other services is like pulling teeth. Communication on what is going on campus varies from good to poor. An example of this is when the pandemic began around midterms and there was the report of two people being exposed to Covid on campus, which caused mass panic and multiple people just walking out of class. Parking can sometimes be an issue, so be prepared to walk a little bit. Also, you will need a parking pass from a kiosk or buy a parking pass permit for the semester. Bathrooms could use some work. I recall a time where after flushing the bathroom started to flood. Food choices were fairly solid. If you were going to Starbucks or Subway during lunch, lines would get long. Only food offered on campus now is either from the student store, the cafeteria, the Oak Cafe, or the few vending machines on campus. Off campus, there's quite a few food places around, such as Lis Mongolian BBQ, Chik Fil A, and In-N-Out. The bookstore has been unorganized in the past, but is relatively chilled back and clean nowadays. Be warned that some things will be overpriced, but that's normal for college. Also, don't be shocked if there's a hassle with ordered books or book returns for refunds.Emily “Emma Anne” Branecki

It's almost like 90% of the people who work here will be rude over the phone and tell you to do everything online. They have messed up most of my paperwork, resulting in me having to resubmit residency forms, application forms, proof of ID. Somehow they put me as out-of-state which includes a 900% markup per credit. I went from expecting a $150 bill for a single class and ended up with a $1200 bill. No one wants to help sort it out. No one wants to answer the phone. The website is difficult to navigate. Honestly, I have had a single positive experience with one person in Admissions, and everyone else has been pushy, rude, dismissive, and argumentative. I am considering switching to literally any other school in the district. My partner attends SCC and it's laughable how smoothly they handled his transition back to school, compared to mine. Edit: it should also be noted that I had applied to ARC 4 times since 2013 and never received a welcome letter. I had emailed asking why I applied and was not told anything, or emailed, called – nothing. I got no response. Called last month because I was at my wits end and I am told "I can't give you a student ID number because your application was DENIED." I asked why and she told me she couldnt tell me. I asked for a supervisor who immediately told me "we have the wrong SSN for you, so none of your applications were accepted because it didn't watch our records." My CORRECT SSN, was being rejected. In 8 YEARS NO ONE EVER TOLD ME THIS. Just like they didn't tell me I was listed as out of state, despite submitting residency information multiple times. This school is a JOKEI Illyria

The college is great..,.. the bookstore however is 1 star at best. The school district sub-contracted it out and the new facilitators understand that they have a built in market from people having to use their financial aid or other assorted vouchers from various Govt entities and as a result they practice poor customer service utilizing people that are quite adept at rapid fire litanies telling you why none of the delays or shortages are their concern or problem. In fact in my opinion 90% of their employees that deal with the public are nothing more than thugs and bully's. They take no responsibility for faulty instructions in how to use the new book site with vouchers and tell you that they are "saaaawrrrrry" when they tell you they can't locate your books and give you a date when they will be in. Once again, in my opinion, they are nothing more than petty tyrants and bullies that should have their contract terminated for lack of accountability on their part. The administration is not interested in offering equal access to education for parents who are looking to get one. The college is not interested in reestablishing the on-campus child care center. Also the administration knew the science building chemistry hoods were not functioning properly for years and never let students know. The professors are incredible but if you are a mother good luck because the college doesn't care that in order to access education, women with children (those who require an education for a chance to improve their children's future!) need some equitable student services. Don't take my word for it scroll through the reviews. Most reviewers are male even though majority of students who attend the college are women. Read into it what you will but the facts remain that the college has a child care center on campus but refuse to renovate it even though property taxpayers agreed to pay for it (measure g 2004).Melissa Martinez

The college incorrectly listed me as a non-California resident. When I attempted to fix this, I found that I could not get in touch with ANYONE from the business offices. Eventually, they started having a debt collector call me because I wanted to sort out the residency issue so that I would not be charged nearly $1000 for my classes. This has been going on for months now, I attempt to call their offices almost every week and no one answers me. I'm beginning to suspect that they are just trying to force me to pay the non-resident fee so that they can get some extra cash. All in all, I have had a horrible experience with the administrative services, and if I could get on the line with anyone, I would have been happy to have paid the appropriate tuition months ago.Laura Israel

Overall, the colleges is good. However, other colleges are doing much better. $ stars for the efforts in trying to become better. Recently they have started to work on the new Gymnasium building. Teachers and professors are good but they are very diverse. The teaching style of all the teachers differ and they might not be ok with everyone. So choose your class wisely. Overall the crowd is good but sometimes you might find some not so friendly people. I am not sure about the safety. The teachers are great and the campus is nice but trying to get financial aid during COVID is impossible. The financial aid advisors are rude and don’t seem like they want to help you at all. Just because of this reason I will not be recommending MHCC to any of my friends and would suggest to go to Clackamas Community College where they are much, MUCH more helpful.Dima Poperechnyy

You have to take the bad with the good. There are some great people who work for this school, then there are people who could care less bout you and your education. They make you jump through hoops and pass you around with little to no help. The department dealing with transcripts is very unprofessional and rude. I have been trying for four months to get three copies of my transcript. They sent one although I put 3 where it asked how many. I mailed in another request for two more. I never received them. I emailed the admissions department to see what happened. They responded back asking where to send it and I responded. However, I never received them. I then called and was told to do another request. I did another request in September. I just spoke with them only to tell me that they sent only one again on October 3rd. Her reason was because I only had one place listed to send and she didn't see why they would need two copies. So I then had to explain that it was going to the same place. Once received, the department would see to it that all three committee members got a copy. I shouldn't have had to explain that since on the request I asked for two. Furthermore more it's not for her to know why! What's the purpose of putting the number needed on the form if they only send the number they feel should be sent. No where on the transcript request does it ask why you need them. It just ask how many. I now have to send off another request for the third one. By the time I request another one and wait for it in the mail, it will be past the deadline at my job. I will have to wait until next year. This has been four months of nonsense.Khai Shade

I have tried to reach someone by phone in Human Resources for several days. No messages returned. The automatic greeting message tell you to press the # key to speak with an operator. You never speak to an operator which I am sure is by design. It just keeps reporting the options which no one answers! You call any other professional business you are at least able to speak with an operator. This gives a harbinger of the type of administration you will have to deal with if they answer the phone or you show up in person. Had awful experiences in past attempting to get transcripts. I love the friendly atmosphere in this college! Staff are nice and kind, everyone is eager to help. Tarted at the door during the orientation every staff member was smiling and welcoming, I felt the passion of the speakers, they didn't want the new students to go wondering about what they should do. I attending this college to complete some prerequisites for the graduate school, so I am not the regular type of students. But I can tell with confidence this college is an important pillar in the community! and they want to succeed, take the chance and enjoy the experience!Khalid AlOgbi

I'd like to think that because of Covid, there is a lack of help from this college. I have been trying my very best for the last month to do everything myself without the help from any employees at this college. I have not been contacted regarding how to get enrolled, registered, what classes I need, financial aid, etc. I have been struggling since I have submitted my application to this college. You basically have to figure out everything on your own which isn't hard for me to do because I was walked through the steps from my previous college who actually took the time to help me out. While I understand quite a few things, there are some things that I don't understand and that I have questions about but getting into contact with anyone at this college is very difficult. Even through emails, no one responds. This college lacks the skill for helping their future students. I believe that I have done everything necessary in order to be a student but getting in touch with a counselor is the biggest problem. Making an appointment with a counselor via zoom, is quite a struggle and I have messaged quite a few employees at the college but yet, I still haven't received any responses. I am about to give up and just try somewhere else although this college is very convient for me, it's not worth the struggle and hassle at this point. 😔Mary McDonald

Great atmosphere. Their financial aid office needs help though. I started my fasfa around May and I'm trying to get in for the fall. I sat down with the students that help you with the fasfa form online so I don't do it wrong. I had to wait for them to approve it. They told me to bring my parents IRS info, even though I used the retrieval tool. I had to do a dependent verification form. Turned in copies of those. Then asked for my W-2. Then they asked for another verification form. Just constantly asking me for things I turned in. It sometimes takes them weeks to let you know what's next. So I learned the hard way the previous year that they ask for these forms every semester. They didn't tell me until I was applying for another semester. First year student trying to figure them out. I lived in El Cajon when they were asking for forms making this process extra annoying. Apparently they had to restart the process for the new semester. Don't ask me why but this is the most annoying part of school. I advise making multiple copies of whatever they ask for IRS FORMS, W-2, AND TAX INFO. They'll ask for it next semester and start it months before to avoid lines. I'm grateful there is a financial office though or school would be ROUGH! Thank you. EDIT: THEY MOVED TO A 270PERSONAL

City College is represented by the San Diego transit people, MTS, as City College Trolley Station, a cave, possibly Plato's, remarkable for grime and an expansive range of social behaviors not common in the quiet halls of ivy and higher education. The City College Trolley Station, is, of course, the gateway of San Diego's always expanding skidrow that could be seen as starting here and continuing to 25th and Commercial. San Diego and the real estate community promotes skidrow as being the East Village, but it's not really so much a village as it is a refugee camp. And it is getting bigger every day and will one day engulf all of downtown and possibly as far into the neighborhoods as Hillcrest and North Park. I live near this college and me and my wife and kids love to take walks threw it. It's so beautiful and peaceful. Also you have campus police always around so you feel safe at all times. I'm a male, late 20's student at USF, and this has been my experience: 1) Rigorous – Having had a decent amount of life experience before coming here, I expected it to be easy. I was wrong. As someone who has always been good at math, the math classes were all challenging and required a lot of time and effort to do well in. The same goes for their science classes. I had attended another, easier university before coming here, and the difference was huge. 2) Political/Religious – Being a catholic university in the middle of a very liberal city, there is a good chance that someone will at some point try to shove religion or liberal politics down your throat, with a higher probability of the latter. As someone who doesn't care for politics, I'd prefer if they were left out of the classroom. 3) Small class sizes – All but one of my classes have been under 30 people, with many being less than 20. There are personal, 1-on-1 classes for music lessons in guitar, piano, vocals, etc. There are ample staff to handle any problem and any and all issues I've had were solved quickly. Compare this to a state school with class sizes in the 100's and there is really no comparison. 4) Expensive – With an annual price tag of about 50k, plus the astronomically high San Francisco cost of living, it is incredibly expensive to go to school here. I came here largely because I had a full-ride scholarship, and would have seriously considered other options if I didn't. 5) Amenities – There are several large libraries, excellent quiet study areas, private music rooms with instruments, and the campus itself is quite beautiful. With the tuition comes a free public transit card and gym access, at a very nice gym. 6) Overall quality – The quality of the school overall is very high. I can't say how it compares to the likes of top schools like Stanford, but many of USF's professors have come from those big name schools. The combination of talented, intelligent professors and personal 1-on-1 attention make it a great place to learn and study.Tyler D

I transferred out of the University of San Francisco real quick. The school is expensive, the education is ok but the material is too easy, and the social life is garbage unless you're undoubtedly liberal. The professors were very nice and helpful, but anyone from the administration building is out to get you, ultimately this place is just a big money pit. Beautiful campus in the heart of the city but otherwise, a school filled with professors that don’t really care, poor accommodations for students with disabilities, extremely expensive, campus police focuses more on giving you parking tickets and people’s conduct rather than ensuring vehicles are not broken into. Graduated here in 2018. Yes the school is not perfect. but it is affordable and offers all sorts of academic programs for students & for those who are interested in learning a new skill. A few issues with the homeless people who easily make their way in the school's restroom and leave all their mess inside. A bit more security is also needed because of the area surrounding the school, but overall it's a good community college. Looking back now, I miss every moment I got to spend here. I’ve been doing Penn Foster online schooling for almost a whole year now. I’ve found this online experience a great one. They are very helpful in all ways possible. I’ve called a few time and their stuff is helpful and kind. They help so much with the questions you ask and reassurance you need. You go at your own past, fast, or as slow as you want. I’ve struggled so much in the past with schools , I’ve been to over 6+ schools and I started at the point have an IEP/ taking classes for it. Penn Foster online High School, has helped me understand so much and I love how I can learn at my own past. The price is also reasonable. I can stay up till 3AM and do my work. I’ve finished a class in a whole week at times. I’d stay really hard. Not only that Penn Foster always keeps you up to date on thing that are happening with your account. I am the mother of two students at Penn Foster who just graduated. They are 15 and 17 years of age. They were placed in Penn Foster due to being bullied by teachers at their local school. My oldest enrolled with 0 credits in Oct of 2019 and my youngest enrolled with 7 credits in June of 2020. My oldest graduated Dec 07, 2020 and my youngest graduated Dec 23. 2020. They loved that they could go as slow or as fast as the wanted. They loved not having a schedule or having to have any interactions with teachers. Their overall experience was great. I have one more student, my 16 year old step-daughter working on it now. She's 41% done. We also have a 14 year old who will be enrolling once done with 8th grade. I don't know about the teachers but the staff is extremely rude(especially the two ladies at the main office). I went there to take the ESL placement test. I think we can all agree that people who are taking the test are there because they know little to no English, but they treated us as if we were stupid! Instead of using different, simpler words for those who didn't understand, they were raising their voices and almost shouting at them. I even saw one them (a male worker who also speaks Spanish) snapping his fingers to one of the employees, telling him he needed to work faster.. I'm not even kidding. After finishing with the test, this same man gave me my orientation date and hour. I told him I had class at that hour and he told me "that's it, I already gave it to you, there's no more negotiation". (?????!!!) He didn't asked me beforehand if those hours were ok with me (It's not the same hours I would be taking the ESL class) and I'm sure there could be another time I could go.. There's just no interest from them for people to learn. And, by the way, the process of taking the placement test takes more than two hours and with this arrogant staff it feels even longer.. Hi I’ve been going here for the past two months I came to this school because I was looking for a trade that could work well with my disability and I can not express enough how the barbering program here has helped me especially with the work of Ms.Antunez she is an amazing instructor really teaches everything hands on she goes the extra mile to cover things step by step and to also take personal time to teach each one of her students one on one in subjects they aren’t prevailing in I would recommend anyone looking for a great school and atmosphere to join to come here especially if you want to give barbering a tryUnique B

As of Oct 2022, the services are open for cosmetology, barbering, and esthetician!! For over 10 years I've been involved with the programs here and everyone is really great. In addition to being a very good person, Dave Casuto is an exceptional teacher whose patient and creative style of instruction has helped remedy this reviewer's computer-phobia a great deal. Sadly, I must confess that I am a bit slow on the uptake when it comes to working with computers. Dave has been extremely patient with me and he is extremely perceptive in intuiting the way I learn. Dave's rates are more than reasonable, especially given the excellent quality of his personalized service. It is always easy to communicate with Dave about scheduling or any questions I have related to computer learning. I really appreciate that Dave is always accountable and punctual. David is this Senior Surfer's dream come true. I've worked with him on a wide variety of projects from the artistry of designing and building a web site to the nuts and bolts of learning basic computer skills. He takes a personal interest in every task and thinks through and discusses all the possibilities that might be be helpful to me. He is focused, highly proficient as well as personable, pleasant, and easy to work with. After every session with David I feel more technically empowered and excited about coming to my computer because he's dedicated to teaching his clients. Dave was referred by a friend at a time when I was in great need of tech help with my computer "skills". He helped me download software and clean up my computer as well as master Picasa. I am not good at learning from the written instructions provided by the software folks, having Dave sit beside me and explain the steps and recommend the correct clicks has been so helpful. Amazing free classes! Great campuses with updated equipment. Why did I pay for my undergrad degree again? The only downfall is that some of the people in the classes may be a little slower to grasp concepts than others. Patience is a virtue when receiving free education.Joniene Swick

This is truly an amazing institution. If I could go to high school again, I'd choose Urban. The community is awesome, and everyone truly cares about the development of all of the students, celebrates their unique gifts and encourages them to measure themselves, not against each other, but against their own potential. What a concept! Learning through service is not a check-off, but a gift to each young person to find his or her own way to contribute to solving problems in our community. It was our privilege to have two sons at Urban at the same time. For one glorious year, they were 40% of the starting basketball squad, and that interest has lasted. But they also found the passions that drove them through college and beyond–our oldest son is the dean of students and teaches special education at a middle school in Brooklyn and his brother is a resident in surgery at UCSF. I wish we could take a dose of the Urban magic and spread it to every high school — public and private — in San Francisco. Imagine what our city could become….Alma Robinson
