20 Best G.E.D Programs In Mesa, AZ (2022 Updated)

I've had a wonderful experience here, and I've been to 2 other universities. The faculty & professors all actually care about you as an individual. Your life outside of class and your goals matter to them. Class size is small! I've never been in one bigger than about 13. You'll start to recognize faces, and it's easy to make friends & find friendly mentors. There are so many helpful outlets to apply for scholarships and other aid. Tutoring is free and convenient hours for it. Also, very helpful transfer experts who assist you in going to ASU, if that's a goal of yours. My only complaint is that sometimes a class doesn't fill up enough, while it's taking enrollment, so then they have to cancel the class if not enough interest. But I would definitely recommend coming here — I'd say it's the ideal community college.McKenzie Wilkins

South Mountain has the greatest and most diverse students and it is a joy to teach them. I always look forward to the start of the semester when my classroom fills with great gifts, ready to learn. Its seems as though the entire community is represented, young, old, every color, faith, culture, awesome vets. I teach CIS105, Survey of Computer Information Systems, and have never used a textbook, nor do my students have to purchase any software.. As a futurist, I enjoy preparing my students for their future. My students end their semester with me with a professional portfolio of their work from throughout the semester which is their own to keep.Laurita Moore

As a student and student worker this college exceeds every expectation I could have ever had for Community College and my first Community College. Advisors are Hands-On and want you to succeed. They will work with you and all types of ways to see succeed and do well. And they look into all possible resources to help you through your college experience in any way possible. They also have free counseling services, tutoring, disability resources, scholarships and grants, student life and so much more it's amazing. Not too bad of a school overall — class and professor wise. However, the enrollment and financial aid staff are horrible. Terrible and irritating process to get you set up with everything. This was back when I first started going there in 2012. Not sure if anything has improved or not. They were also VERY understaffed at the time. It took me so long to graduate as well because I would get mixed instructions from different counselors. You never get the same counselor twice. Granted I made it in 2 years but I did have to do summer classes because of the 'changes' that kept happening with my degree. The counselors are not very well trained with each degree program. It's best to literally ask your professors about it or you can get a better understanding from counselors at the University you want to attend later. The teachers I had were phenomenal! When we got there we weren't sure if we were going to have a really long wait in line but no what we found was the nicest people posted at the cones that they had set up for the direction you were supposed to go in. They gave excellent information and instruction and we had absolutely no problem getting through our checkpoints which they did check that you had an appointment and verified some information and then we went right straight on through and there was one car in front of us getting an injection and it just took a minute and they drove off and we pulled up and they gave us our vaccines. There were two of us in the car we both had appointments and again everyone was just really super nice very knowledgeable about what was going on. They knew their job and they did it very well. This campus is amazing and not nearly as sprawled as any of the other community colleges/universities. The engineering, mathematics, computer science, and physical science (chem/bio/physics) classes are top notch. The smaller classes sizes means you're getting more personal attention and education than ANY of the universities for any of your classes. I really mean that. Also, there is always decent parking, since the buildings are all in the center (for now). I would have finished my degree here, but it was way too far when I lived in central PhoenixLloyd Allen

Mesa has a lot of great classes and opportunities but there are major issues. The sign up process for classes is confusing, many of the pathways online that are supposed to show you the courses you need for degrees are incorrect. Of course you should contact advisors to figure out which classes you need, but it is nearly impossible. There are so few advisors and very little availability. As of right now it asks you to make in person appointments with them and yet there are never any slots open. You can email advising which takes 2-3 days to get a response. You can try and call their office and wait on hold for an hour just to eventually get hung up on. It is in no way the advisors faults, anyone I have actually been able to contact has been as helpful as possible, but it is so hard to get a response or any help. I signed up for courses that the online pathway said I needed only to find out that they weren't actually necessary for my degree and others were. When I went to drop the courses and add the new ones it wouldn't let me because I owe money for the courses I am still enrolled in that haven't even started yet. So, I cannot sign up for the correct courses, have no clue which classes I actually need and cannot find advisors to help. I understand during the pandemic it is difficult for universities to find staff and help, but even before COVID Mesa was still just as inefficient. Mesa just needs to improve their communication and assistance with students, it would solve so many issues.Taylor Pouncey

MCC has a fantastic non-credit program for older adults: NFLL, or New Frontiers for Lifelong Learners. For an extremely reasonable fee, I sign up for as many of the program's classes as I please. They're online, in-person, or a mix of the two. There are also some field trips; we've just gone to a free day at the Desert Botanical Gardens, and next week there will be a trip to the new one in Queen Creek for a fee. A class on WW2 planes had a trip to Falcon Field, etc. Over the last few years I've taken classes in history, tech, health, music, and much more! There are also groups for discussion, playing games, hiking for 3 different levels, etc., as well as social and service activities. In-person classes are at MCC Mesa and Red Mtn campuses usually. Some classes have been through Great Courses, and many lecturers are former teachers/professors or experts in their field. Check it out–great program at low price! Update: on-campus classes are so easy to get to: it's a small campus (either Dobson or Red Mountain), and the free parking is ample and easily accessible.Natalie Satterthwaite

So I just signed up today.. I think which is the problem. There’s like 5 people sitting at a desk “helping” people get set up but they did absolutely nothing to help me get signed up they didn’t tell me I couldn’t sign up for my class the same day as I walked in and told them exactly what class I wanted and that I never attended college before. They don’t tell me it’s some weird 24 hour wait for the account to start working and they also did not at all clarify to make sure to take the student photo because now that I chose to skip that because NOBODY helped me I’m unable to finish my application lol hice apparently if I don’t finish in 48 hours will be deleted? They also didn’t tell me that. So this has been an absolutely awful experience thus far and I haven’t even been able to join a class yet.Ryan Jorgensen

I don't know where to begin. Being frustrated and feeling as though I am giving the runaround, trying to get my diploma and trying to get my official transcript from a school that never answers a phone call during business hours. I never had to rely on a voicemail message to get back in contact with me due to miss understanding of phones calls. I have set up a payment arrangement back in May 2021, and I was told that if I miss a payment out of six months I will have to start all over again. I have been making payments and unfortunately was told that I missed three payments but look at my account and I see they're taking money out of my account. But still won’t give me my diploma. The staff is very rude and have not sympathy or compassion about the students other are trying to make something out of themselves in life. Talking to the staff is like hopping and excepting. Staff that not willing to work with you to try to help me. I've been only help by Miss Sherry, which I was told no longer works there. She's been the only person helping me getting my diploma and trying to get everything situated. I feel frustrated disappointed disgusted and hurt that I can't even depend on the school that I thought would help me succeed in life. This is hurtful and I would not wishes upon no one else. I work so hard live alone have no family here and you're telling me that I can't get any of my transcripts or I can't get my diploma because you guys messed up on your end and you're making me suffer which is not right and unacceptable. As much as I talk about you guys school and the staff that helps me and for someone to sit there and make me feel as though it's my fault is unacceptable. Question would you want to recommend a school to someone? For me at this point I will say no because I see that they're not even trying to help at all but take my money and won't give me my diploma or my transcripts I need to speak to someone and the corporate office as a CEO or CFO that can help meMoquatin Washington

If I could give 0 stars, I would. Every campus that I have spoken to someone on the phone has been rude and dismissive and not willing to help… I attended the nursing program in 2016…completed one semester…and had to withdraw from the second (before it started) because My son was having health issues. They told me to come back whenever I wanted that they would gladly accept me back into the program where I left off… which was absolutely not true! When I tried to go back….i was told I could be accepted into the current semester…Which would have been fine except….they were changing the curriculum the following semester…Which if I would have gone back would have forced me to start all over again…. Also, When I asked If I would be able to have a financial credit for the first semester that I completed because they changed the curriculum, I was told to speak with the head of the nursing dept and then she told me that was a question for financial aid who then referred me back to the nursing dept head…and they both said that they couldn’t help me. Don’t waste your time nor effort here. $24,000 down the drain for absolutely nothing! And not only that, But when you try to have your transcripts sent, it takes forever to actually get a hold of someone…and with the rude staff on the phone at every single campus it’s ridiculous!Melissa Kloess

I’m so happy I came across the Arizona College of Allied Health on google. I requested to receive more information about the college and not even a few days later I get a text from Justin. Justin was very nice and gave me so much information that helped me decide this was the college for me. Before I came here I was at Community Colleges for the last 5 years completing only prerequisites not even in a program yet. When Justin told me I would graduate next year in July getting my DA diploma I was beyond excited. I can’t thank Justin enough for all his help. I just got done with my first track passing all my classes. I could have not done it without Ms. Vosteen. She is the best teacher I’ve ever had at all the schools I’ve been to. I am going to miss being in her classes but I am so excited to continue my journey. Thank you Arizona College of Allied Health for everyone there that I’ve seen have all been so nice and some teachers actually joke around with students instead of being so serious and rude it’s so refreshing being able to be in a environment with teachers like that.Ashley Brandon

Went in for a haircut and a manicure today. The student that worked with me was Sydney. She was a very sweet young lady and did an okay job on my haircut but the manicure that I paid $20 for was a joke. All she did was shape my nails and applied polish. And the polish job was terrible. On my left thumb nail there are several spots that the polish doesn't cover the nail and on all my nails the polish doesn't even come close to covering my entire nail. I should not have been charged $20 for something that doesn't even resemble a manicure. Who charges $20 just to paint your nails? I know it is a beauty school but you would think that before you left the "teacher" would check the student's work but nope. Not on the hair or the nails. I don't blame the student for this, I blame the instructors. I want my $20 back. I will pay them $5 for the poor polish job and will never go back for a manicure or pedicure. I am seriously upset about this awful excuse for a manicure! UPDATE: Wednesday, June 1, 2022 Received a call from Courtney ask me how my visit went. (this is after I left a call earlier in the day for someone to call me back.) Was told a MaryAnn would call me back to discuss my poor manicure job. Well this Courtney said that since they are students, they cannot use any instruments that may cause harm to the client! If these students aren't reliable enough to use the equipment they will be using in their chosen profession, perhaps they aren't ready to work with the public OR they could explain on their website that the manicure does not include anything but slightly shaping the nail and polish. Courtney stated that the student should have pushed the cuticle back. Advised her again that all she did was a little shaping and polish and the polish job was the worst job ever. I told her I would accept $15 refund and I will pay the $5 for the polish. Nope. No refunds. Said she will turn in a client concern form to Autumn, the director, but that I would receive a call from MaryAnn, the assistant director. She said they could offer me a redo on the manicure. I asked why would I want to have the same thing done again if they don't do anything? I stated if no refund then I would like another service done. Said Nope. Only the same thing can be done again. Advised her will be expecting MaryAnn's call. I am not finished with this. I thing the minimum they could do is post on their website that a manicure only includes shaping and polish. But who in their right mind pays $20 to have someone polish their nails. And if I'm being honest, the haircut is not that great. Again, I get it, they are students. The instructor should be checking all work before the client leaves. This is not over!! I do not recommend this school for any services, especially a manicure or pedicure.Suzy Berens

I am happy to support students because I've been a student many times in my life and every previous time I've been to Avalon the services have been fine but recently it's gone way down hill. My last visit was such a disappointment with the cut turning out so bad I've made an appointment to get extensions. But it's whatever, I didn't say anything because that's the point of school right, to learn. Also a teacher never checked my haircut which I thought was weird. Then today my husband takes our 2 boys for back to school cuts and honestly one looks like they cut his hair blindfolded. My younger son has straight blonde hair so the cut wasn't blended well but otherwise passable as decent. My oldest however has coarse, curly red hair. Not an easy texture to work with but again where are the teachers?? The back looked hacked at, no blend at all and there was a ridiculously long piece at the front that the clippers should have got but was missed. Again, this is a learning environment, I get that, but the fact that the student and teacher( if they even did) looked at this hack job and said, yup that's good to go, is just disappointing for the whole group of cosmetologists coming from the school.Jesse Coulter

I saw Emberleigh and I am absolutely obsessed with how it turned out. I was looking to brighten my hair but wasn’t sure how bright I wanted it. Emberleigh took it into her own hands and I couldn’t be happier. I got a full head of highlights and a small trim for an extremely reasonable price. She took her time and was very patient and helpful. Marissa (another student who was shadowing) actually stepped in and helped with the highlights as well and did such an amazing job. I have been looking for assistance since August it's not two months past due for rent and sadly I have tried every recourse they provide and even called starting at 150 pm to ensure I would be in line to talk to someone however I got to a live person and she just said the line didn't open tell two and hung up at like 1:55 I called back and it was already saying no one. Available to answer plz call back. I called 150 times that day and never reached another person yesterday I went to office because I don't got phone because I couldn't pay it and I was directed to the lobby phone and when I called I didn't here their office phones ring at all and the two people in front where not even on phones for the phone line to be busy.. I even emailed them seeing if I can get help that way and no reply to my email for those of you that donate to this organization I wouldn't give them any money cause they don't even use it to help people and it's people like me that have kids that end up losing their home. I want to start off by saying once I was able to communicate with the actual case manager, my experience was much better. Now for the bad. The receptionist is very negative and condescending. From the start I was made to feel extremely unwelcome in the facility. Secondly, after asking about rental assistance, I was told that was only available for families and not single individuals. To prove her point she gave me a paper that specifically stated individuals and families. Disregarding her erroneous information I applied for rental on line. My concern is who else she has deterred from receiving assistance. I don't know what the underlying problem is but I did ask her about her negative attitude. It also makes me wonder if she has an agenda based on her feelings on who SHE believes should receive assistance.Dennis T. Johnson

I applied for rental assistance 3 weeks ago. I have yet to receive a response if I am approved or not but I will say this. The staff and case managers have been amazing. I have severe anxiety so I tend to constantly worry and the current situation of course gives me major need to worry due to this I have followed up a million times by email and phone but each time they have been super kind and patient in their response. I still don't know if I will be approved. I truly hope we are so me and my young daughter don't end up on the streets but I will say that they deserve a million stars and the highest reviews for their compassion and kindness! Literally have been trying to enroll in this total joke of a school since Spring of 2014. It is now Fall of 2015, attempted to register for the Spring 2016 semester — my now 4th time trying to register for classes here.They have NO assigned academic advisors, which means every time you want guidance you get someone who knows nothing about you. Which also means you get NO help in anything whatsoever. What's funny about that is that my advisor from my former college, 2,600 miles away, is still contacting me on a monthly basis and trying to get me enrolled in another school and they won't even work with her to get me in. She helps me out and I don't even send money to that school anymore, so what's that say about MCC? They have working students in the enrollment and financial aid departments who have absolutely no idea on what they are doing and will pretend they do, and just hand off random paperwork for you to do to and tell you to bring it back and give you a pile of more paperwork to bring in, just because they honestly have no idea. Then you come back, and it turns out they didn't any of that and give you a new pile of **** that they don't actually need from you and turn it down, THEN later tell you that "oh well we did need that, so". ENDLESS cycle of this for a year now. They will not look at my transferred credits from an out of state college unless I register for classes, when the system finally decided to allow me to register for whatever reason, they tried to say I'm an out-of-state student and I need to pay that rate even though I've lived in Arizona, with valid everything to prove it, for well over a year and yet again they tell me the endless paperwork game of all the things I have already brought into them before that they declined me because they "didn't need it". Parking is bad, too. The one lot that you are allowed to park on if you aren't registered and haven't received a parking pass is constantly full with no available spaces, so I always end up having to park in student pass parking anyway and worry about being towed/receiving a ticket the entire time I'm inside trying to register and enroll. (I don't even know if they do towing/tickets, since no one told even went over that me). I'm paying out of pocket for school, no aid, no scholarships, no loans, just cash, and this is how I get treated? I find it hard to believe this facility has been open for 50 years. I don't even know how people get into go to school, and everyone I've met here in AZ whose actually gotten into this school rants about how much they hated it and never went back after their first semester. I continued to pursue it thinking I just might have a positive experience, but obviously I'm not going to and I've now realized that. I don't know why anyone would even want to go to school here, and I certainly don't want to anymore and will take my money elsewhere since I can see MCC cares so little about future students I cannot even begin to imagine how they treat current students. So thanks, MCC, for wasting an entire year for me on lost time to work on my education. So if you're a student coming from a college in a different state, DO NOT ATTEMPT TO GO TO THIS SCHOOL. After waiting at SCC for two hours to see and advisor and being informed that they couldn't help me I drove to this location AFTER calling. When I arrived I was informed that they closed the academic advising due to short staffing. Is this hell or what? I have been driving all over Arizona just so I can get my MAPP program changed. I want to thank Crystal in the communications office in Desert Willow building today. She saw me walking, limping slowly with a cane trying to find my class. Even though it was her lunch hour, she not only took the time to get me to the class, showed up with campus personnel at the end of the class to drive me to my car. ACYR is a well established organization with friendly staff and interns who greet everyone with open arms. The opportunities available to Youth are extraordinary with efficient results. The foundation of the Center's High School, several youth programs involving young people with awesome assets like health, education and workforce provided valuable skills and knowledge about the real world and how a young person can thrive. I was real exicted to be given the opportunity to work for this organzation as my first real job the experience was more worth the time investment. Options given to youth are felixable according to their schedule. The postion I chose for the Summer Rise Internship program provided me with hands on training valued work experience, and after learning from them I was able to help them on the job professionally and effectively. Also with the help of other staff members involving the interns with activities it was an absolute pleasure to show up bright and early every single morning to go to work.Rodrick McCray

I did not know what to expect with this internship but I was pleasantly surprised with the experience. All the staff is very knowledgeable and are ready to help you with anything. I was able to learn a lot of new skills like customer service, resume building, and how to improve your self talk. We were able to go on numerous field trips as well to get real world experience such as going to a job fair and various colleges in Arizona. 21 years ago I took an EMT re-certification course at Phoenix College. Last week (July/2013) my former land lady forwarded a letter from the Community College district. I have not lived at this home in over 20 years and they addressed it to my maiden name. The letter said I owed $57 and I over 180 days late in paying them. The letter did not even say specifically what the charge was for. It gave numerous examples as to what it might be, but not specifically what I may have done or did not do to warrant the fee. I only ever took one class at any Phoenix area college and this was it. I went away for college in California. I do not recall any parking ticket, I never used their library. I paid my fees before the class started. So, I had no idea what it could be. I thought there had to be a mistake. I called them and they first had to go to an old computer system because it had been so long since I went there. Sure enough the lady on the phone said it was me. I asked to speak to someone higher up and she passed me alone to someone else. When I spoke to the supervisor. She was incredibly rude. I said there has to be a statue of limitations on this and she claimed no. I told her I would not pay it and she said "the taxpayers of Arizona deserve to have their $57." How about the taxpayers of Arizona getting their money 21 years ago? How about the taxpayers of Arizona being upset that the cost in time and effort spent on such a ridiculously small amount is greater than the $57 they may ever get from me. She still could not even tell me what I did or did not do. She said it was so old it was on microfiche and wanted me to hold on for 15 minutes or so for her to dig it out. I told her no I would not wait and good luck tracking me down as you have my maiden name, an old old address and I don't even live in Arizona. So, I hung up. This is by far the most shameful display of government waste I have personally ever experienced.Dodger Man

Maricopa Community College is one of the worst institutions I've ever dealt with! 1. They have the lack of administrative support for students trying to enroll. If you're new to their system they do not provide any technical support whatsoever. And I mean a real person working with you face to face. Instead we have these overly worked employees who treat new students like they are such an inconvenience. 2. I have been dropped from my classes due to not paying my tuition within 3 days of enrolling into these classes!!!! Well let's see, I applied on Thursday evening "after school hours." Then Friday the campus was closed when I tried to call to inquire about my financial aid. SO, now it's Sunday and some how I'm magically dropped from these classes! WHAT THE HELL! I have financial aid, and instead of calling or trying to reach out before doing so, they just send you an email letting you know "oh, you're no longer enrolled in this class." But then giving me a heads up that I may still have to pay if they dropped me close to the start of the classes. MARICOPA COMMUNITY COLLEGES, HOW THE HELL AM I SUPPOSED TO PAY WHEN YOU'RE CLOSED??? THEN YOU HAVE THE ODASITY TO THREATEN TO STILL CHARGE ME AFTER NOT EVEN COMMUNICATING THERE WAS A PROBLEM IN THE FIRST PLACE!!! It's amazing, we shove down everyone's throat that education is important. YET, there is such a lack in support and communication within this industry. There is no longer a care for people to actually learn, we are all just $$$ to institutions such as this. How do you expect people to better themselves, their community or even their country when you cannot even provide them with the necessary steps to do so?Aaron Backus

I came by the office to pick up an item but no one opened the door. I peeked through the door and saw a female security guard sitting at the desk on her phone. I gently knocked but she did not open the door. I had to wait outside for 20 minutes until the receptionist came back and let me in. The package was on the the security guard's desk. It was so rude and unprofessional for her to just be sitting there on her phone and I wasn't even greeted when I went in or left. This experience has ruined how I view this company and I am disappointed that they employ people that cannot do the bare minimum such as opening a door.Linda Johnson

any people think that we're a bad school and all… but that never brings us down. We keep on trying and will be the best high school in Arizona. The teachers there do whatever they can to help you graduate and will be there whenever you need someone to talk to or to just be with. The students there are also fun to be with and you make friends easily there. I've only been here for not even a year and the tradion and the school's spirit makes me want to be here for the rest of my high school years. Its an amazing school and i hope it gets better each and every single year when i'm here and after i graduate.albert johnson

I went to Mesa High School, graduated in 1984. When I was there the teachers I had cared for me and helped me. I was supposed to graduate in 1985 but got credit enough to graduate in 1984. Thanks to their helping me out in my classes.Susan Brinkley

It's a high school they have teachers snot-nosed kids and good kids and rebellious kids and athletic kids and band nerd kids they might even have a few drop out every year but all in all it's a high school just like all the other onesDevon Mortensen

I only attended here my Sophomore year, gratefully. The students are very segregated, very judgmental, and very subject to their clicks. I went through my sophomore here alone. No one came to talk to me except a few people out of pity who did not care at all. If your kid has trouble with people who are as I described I would suggest sending them to another school. Not only that but, the teachers are impatient and have anger management issues. I was trying so hard to do my best at this school I was doing all I could. I just could not handle the pace and the teachers did not understand why. The office staff, the teachers, the students all were horrible for me I was grateful I was able to transfer schools for my junior and senior years.Sean Fitzgerald

I remember attending this school when I was a Freshmen. Due to my traditional style of dressing and my Islamic background, the students would always yell "Watch out for the terrorist" as if it was the joke of the century. Some of them would yell Allah Akbar in the room. I tried reporting it to the staff, but it seems as though they enjoy seeing me treated like this. My parents saw my discontent, so they moved me to Dobson. Here at Dobson, the students are actually treated equally. The students are also kind, which is influenced by the staff. So if you want to send your child to a school, send them to DobsonJuan Toledo Lopez

One of my children attended here for one semester. The facility looks like a juvenile detention center and they are so defunded they were only having school 4 days per week. As far as I could tell, any student who wanted to could do their classes from home via computer. Arizona has some of the most lax schooling laws I have ever encountered as a parent. And I have lived in Utah, too. While that can be a good thing for homeschooling families, I can’t help but worry about what happens to all the kids who are shuffled through this district.J M

Literacy Volunteers of Maricopa County is a life saver! I am SO glad they advertised or I would have never found them! They are a government-funded organization that teaches English to non-native speakers and GED services FOR FREE!!! I give them 5 stars obviously for their free services, but also for their flexible hours to study (7:30AM – 8:00PM), their friendly helpful staff, and the option to study at home online.Devanney Manoz
