20 Best G.E.D Programs In Detroit, MI (2022 Updated)

I attended a meeting at Marygrove College and learned all about their revitalization of the campus. The buildings were constructed in the 1920’s.  They had fallen into disuse over the past decade. At this time they are being remodeled and repaired.  A college will begin operation in the main building shortly and in some cases is already in operation. Over the next two years an elementary school with attached high school will start to operate in one of the buildings.  At this time of year the grounds look sparse and bare.  I am looking forward to the spring and will return to look at it at that time. The woodwork in the building is still intact.  There are many religious artifacts and statues of great beauty.  The classrooms are large and have plenty of natural lighting. The telecommunications system is due to be updated. The people that work here are professional, interested, intelligent and kind.  I was especially happy to tour their beautiful library.  I will need to return when the sun is out and the windows are all open.  It is going to be a beautiful teaching college.Alfred Brock

The conservancy is doing a great job of revamping the buildings and in creating an environment which allows children to advance in their educational journey. Family fun day was amazing!!! Everything was free from manicures, massages, hearing vision and health checks. Music, games, arts, bounce house, kiddie train 🚂 and crafts .Food, cotton candy 🍬🍭. All that glitters is not gold. I went through the program for graphic design, tuition paid for by Michigan Works. And for the cost of tuition (about 4 to 5 thousand dollars) this program is not long enough and the curriculum is not laid out for you to follow thru on paper. everything is mainly visual and verbal. To much to take in for a beginner in such short time (4weeks). I am a novice and i do not know anymore about graphic designing than i did when i started the program. I am self taught Photoshop and i guess ill be self taught on everything else as well. SMH. The certificate I feel is useless with out an client to use it for. I feel like i wasted my grant on the wrong program. I went into this thinking i would have employment in the field i loved by the end of the program. And sadly that is not the case. Staff are winging it and ill prepared in some cases. School has no leads for students after course completion.Tasha Marchbank

This is the best school for film , photography and audio in my opinion. I came in here not knowing a thing about my camera and I graduated making music videos , getting booked for photoshoots , special events etc.. Everyone in here makes me feel so great about myself . They make me feel like I can do something great with my work & that's something I've always needed in my life. My self confidence has been boosted. I can say I work doing something I've loved and have gotten hired by one of the greatest directors in Detroit . I got my certificate in only a couple months and I still come to school on my free time to talk to students , help with projects and work with my teacher Brandon. Attending this school has made me into a more self confident , independent woman & I'm so excited for what my talent and career has in store for me in the future.Marisol Sanchez

This school is phenomenal I was a student and then became an employee during Covid and I can say that this was the best school and job I ever had, and I know I will always have a spot there if I ever wanted to teach again. I sit on the board of Esthetics on the back end and the school is flourishing and I’m soooo happy, I seen the school before it was a school when it just was a dream, and What I can say about Marlene Brooks is that she is a women of her word!! Went here on 7/9/2022 for the morning and afternoon residential electrical class , and was hoping to learn how to wire new outlets into a home . The teacher arrived and didn't know it was two sessions, the first session he taught all about safety, at 12:40 pm the teacher brings the models in for us to work on….keep in mind the next session wasn't suppose to start till 1:30pm! Some of these models were already hookedup with outlets from a previous class, but I was lucky enough to get a blank one. For the next 10 minutes the teacher is having conversation with certain students and the rest of us were waiting for him to teach us how to hook the models up. He then comes to my desk (saw the blank model) and says '"This guy must need some help, let's help him" he then proceeds to start putting a wire in and drifts off into another side conversation. He comes back to me and asked a student behind me to come help me because his model was set up! The student gets to my desk and the teacher asked to use his model since it was hooked up….the student tells the teacher that he doesn't know what he's doing either, his model was already hooked up when he received it (SMH) ! At this point I realized the teacher was actually expecting us to teach ourself , or he forget he didn't teach us this part yet! So I just got up and left, I was irritated that I wasted my time! The staff was very nice though, but this class was a horrible experience..I wasnt the only one who left either. …… Updated to 4 stars because although I had a bad experience during my first visit , The owners did reach out to me to correct the situation. I will take another class and hopefully all goes well!Jeff Holmes

I truly enjoyed myself. The instructors were very knowledgeable, very patient, and was helpful to everyone in the class. The only problem that I had about this entire visit was the pathway to the door. The entrance is in the back of the building. In order to get there you have to walk through a long alley and around to the back. The alley is between an abandoned building and the school.There are no cameras along the side of the building and once you get into the back it's just one open space kinda looks like a construction site. No one will hear you if you a scream for help. and I don't recall if there is a gate or not but it is very unsafe to walk this entrance. So on safety reasons alone 3 stars. But the actual class was amazing and I would rate them a 5+. I did email them about this safety problem. Hopefully they do something, especially when the majority of the people I saw in the class were ladies.Eve Taylor

Matrix Human Services with the cooperation of Forgotten harvest gives away free food every Tuesday, EXCEPT the first Tuesday of the month. Be there around 10am and get signed in to receive your number that determines your place in line. They also provide other types of assistance but I'm not sure about the specifics because haven't inquired further than the food.Jason Younk

They are a community outreach organization but to benefit you must know someone. If you are no related or associated with someone who works here, they are rude and condescending. The organization is good in theory but the people who work there are very rude if you are not associated with someone they know.Joanne Miller

After calling for months my children got in and finished. One staff member was the inly one that did anything, Ms Stephanie. After my daughter got her GED they told me they couldn’t help her with SATS or anything else but would not stop calling. They fired the construction teacher who was really great. Go get your GED but if you expect anything or than to be bugged to death so they can try and boost their stats good luck. Somehow I was able to get her SATS done her FAFSA and get he in school then they have an attitude when you dont need their services anymore. Three stars only because of Ms Stephanie who was an angel and went far above the call of her job for children.Nicole

Terrible summer job and totally unprofessional. They never answer the phone, and I still have not got paid and it's going on three weeks. I took the Esthetician course and let me just say I don’t recommend it to anyone save your money and fine a better school that will care about your education as well and your student needs. The instructor Nbraas was probably the best part Dorsey had to offer she did her best to ensure we learned our material and will go above and beyond to ensure you get what she’s teaching and give you more tips to succeed in your career. As far as the school though it was very dirty, unorganized and the office staff there does not care for your concerns. My kit came incomplete and it’s been over 6 months yet I haven’t gotten any of my missing i teams replaced. When we graduated not one of the superintendent or lead esthetics director come and congratulate us on succeeding our program. That right there shows lack of support for their students I would say they care more about the money. You have better chances elsewhere to get better education and kit. Also they will take forever to get you into state boards.. anyway yeah I definitely don’t recommend!!Stephanie Davila Manzo

I remember having services done by these students during Art Van's Ladies Night Out last year December, 2017.. so, I visited the school in Taylor, MI for the first time in April, 2018…upon coming into the school the lobby was bright and clean… the front desk was organized to receive incoming clients. The students began coming in as we waited patiently for them to set up to give services. Everyone was very cordial and happily greeted each other for the day. The students and instructors were professional and kind. I was so impressed with each person's manner of sanitation and orderliness…I forgot to inquire about my first time visitor/senior client discount…the hallway had a monster shine on it…and the ladies room was very CLEAN and well stocked. I told them I could no longer go to school because my dad died and they called me twice after that asking if I'm still going to school. They didn't even say sorry for your loss. I was in a bad mentally ill state at the time, so bad that I didn't even remember signing up for this school. They really know how to manipulate young girls into thinking they are going to a good school. The teachers don't even text you with feedback so you can improve your skills. Saddened to be leaving this review. I feel like this community college does the bare minimum to get my money and give me a piece of paper. Can we get some career resource support? If there is a career resources department, they do a terrible job assisting students and graduates. Just tried to call the counseling and academic advising department at 3:05 p.m., but was told "we don't have any counselors or advisors here right now, call back on Monday when they stay on the phones til 5:30." I guess being open until 4:30 on Friday is just a suggestion. I would try to complain, but if the advisors left at three, then the management was gone at noon. Maybe I should just expect less from my school, or maybe someone else should run the place more effectively. Two stars for giving you the piece of paper or the transfer credits. Instead of spending money on renovating buildings/parking lots they should be spending money on hiring new people. I don't know if the workers are rude because they are underpaid or if they simply lack people skills…either way…the staff members(minus teachers) who works at South Campus are terrible. They are not only NOT KNOWLEDGABLE…they lack many interpersonal skills. The teachers seem to care more than the administration…but I feel like it is like that everywhere. I was granted an extension to complete an online class for Fall 2020. My access to Canvas, which is the program used to facilitate online learning, was turned off the day after the end of the semester and I have yet to receive access to finish my class. As it stands, the automated system has assigned me a failing grade for this class. It is the last class I need to complete my Associate's degree, and the last class I need to complete my Michigan Transfer Agreement before I apply to university. My extension was granted on December 21, and I am supposed to have until January 17 to finish my work, but I am at a loss for what I can do now to fix this, because the school and the Canvas support team are both telling me the teacher needs to fix this, but the teacher is, as far as I can tell based on the information from Canvas support, being less than truthful and far from helpful to get me going in the right direction. I'll provide a better review if my situation gets resolved. If this helps, the teacher is an adjunct instructor. I would recommend taking classes from non-contractual, non-part time instructors.Vicki R

As a graduate of this school in the 2010's, I must say that any body that attends here will never regret it. Everything from the atmosphere on campus to the actual instructors, it is a really wonderful place to attend. I ended up meeting a lot of cool people here, a lot that I talk to a lot. My favorite instructors were Donna Parkhurst, Rob Richardson, William Pilkey, and last but certainly not least Michelle German. I could easily write a 10 page paper on this place, so I'll just leave it at this: one of my favorite life experiences sprouted from this place. For the most part, SC4 is a decent school. However, I have not even finished my first semester here, and I have ran into many problems with the Michigan Transfer Agreement courses. My English course that I am taking is required for the transfer, and the teacher does not do anything. She does not teach anything, she does not grade anything, and it seems that she is a habitual liar. I am wasting my money on a school that does not do anything for their students. If you end up going here, do not go for the Michigan Transfer Agreement, because it is a waste of time and money.Caleb Redman

Since my past review they have gotten back to me, I've called and gotten to know some of the staff. They are the nicest and most down to level people I've delt with. Answered every question I had and then some more I hadn't even thought of, they even offered to personally grade my portfolio and tell me how strong it is and what I should add or fix. I can't put into words how badly I want to go here! I certainly hope they accept me. Thanks again to Rene, Eric, and everyone I've talked to! My past review: I really really want to go here for a degree in transportation design (hoping to pursue automotive design), but they haven't gotten back to me with any information (requested 3 weeks ago). Not worth the money or effort. Wasted too much time for a sub par experience. But hey, I got the degree and debt to show for it, right?
