20 Best G.E.D Programs In Des Moines, IA (2022 Updated)

Nice buildings, TERRIBLE instructors, especially in their medical-focused science programs. Instructors changing assignments, deleting submitted work, and failing entire sections of classes.. Instructors that play the "gotcha" game, attempting to fail and trick you on material and assignments, as opposed to trying to teach. Have professors ripping material directly from other programs and having you do it for assignments (other universities) that still has other universities logos all over it. Also, you're on your own, admin will not respond / is not on your side. I would spend my money and time elsewhere if AT ALL possible. Had an instructor claim they have the "best program in the state" and then fail to respond by email for about 3 months, and had to get Dean involved. Feels like I'm interacting with high school students for professors. I am from out of state and it turns out Iowa has basically no resources regarding escalating issues with professors – what they say goes and that's it, regardless of how inappropriate or unproductive. DO NOT trust your education to this program and these instructors.Rone Parent

Kirkwood is a fantastic school with high level talent. The college seems to view itself as a service to paying customers (a bafflingly rare delight), and offers courses that inspire good work and deep thinking. Kirkwood *far* exceeds any other educational institution I've attended. The admission process is transparent, the courses you're paying for are clearly outlined, the requirements of the course are made plain at the start of the term… man. I can't say enough nice things. And you know what? I never once had anyone correct me to say "Call me 'Doctor' ". That may not mean much to you, but it meant a hell of a lot to me. Do yourself a favor and go here for your first two years with an eye to transfer on, should that be your aim. You're not just getting more for your money. You're flat out getting more.Claiming Light

Least understanding faculty. Called 6 hours after my deadline to cancel a test that I paid $95 dollars to take. The program director for CE was rude and condescending stating that she would not refund my exam because I was simply 6 hours past the 24 hour deadline. This school is clearly just out to rob people of their money and it’s sickening. I’ve had nothing but a bad experience and it’s crazy to me because at one point I was so excited to attend. Horrible experience. I communicated with Elle 2 months prior to booking services through Aveda. I was specific with wanting to lighten my hair closer to my natural color of a light ash brown along with a haircut. I have proof in our messages that I wanted this done. I had a consultation before the appointment to get a hair strand test to determine if my hair would lighten. On the day of my appointment the teacher decided my hair needed to be fully bleached in order to lighten my hair. The students were very sloppy with the bleach. I got it on my face, Sandals and feet. There was lots of whispering going on. I overheard after the teacher told them to use 6 and 7 levels in my hair that it was still going to be dark but they continued the process anyway. After Elle let it sit for 20 min, she rinsed and dried it. Low and behold it was still dark. She told me this would be a 2 step process since lightening hair would need to happen gradually. This I understand, but my hair looked the exact same tone after all the bleaching they did. It wasn't a horrible color but it wasn't exactly lighter and worth the $117 estimate and damage my hair underwent by bleaching it only for it to still be too dark and not lifted even a level lighter. On top of that she started to proceed with asking if I wanted a couple curls in my hair before she was done. I mentioned to her that I thought I was still getting my haircut and she told me that she didn't know I wanted that and the other student told her to go check with the teacher since it wasn't in the books. The teacher told me I wouldn't be able to get my haircut since the ladies were leaving soon although it was only 5pm and they didn't close till 8pm. Elle lied right to my face that I didn't mention this during the consultation which I did. Instead of an apology and offering to make it right they still refused to cut my hair that day. I mentioned at the front desk about my dissatisfaction with the service and not getting my haircut and she said it wasn't in the books. My husband called later demanding they make it right and they came up with another excuse that since the students are not getting paid for services they can't legally keep them after a certain time which is not something they discussed with me and shouldn't matter because another student could've cut my hair. Needless to say I left very upset on my birthday with an incomplete and dissatisfied with the service. Do not come here expecting top notch service with students who practice on hair and teachers who do not have clients best interests in mind.Kaylee Marie

i emailed the institute over a week ago, no reply from them. email sent: I debated on whether to send this, that it would just be another dissatisfied customer. What swayed me to, wasn't the fact a student did this, after all they are learning, but that an instructor actually did the cut and you should be aware of how terrible it was. I was in on Monday 19th and was placed with Lauren. I didnt like the coloring that was done, didnt even have a clue the top layer was dyed chocolate brown while the whole underside was left blonde. A color correction badly executed. What disturbs me, is that when it came time for the cut the instructor came over and did it. I watched as a lot of my hair was cut off and thinning shears wear used all over my head roughly 2” from the scalp down. Given I have baby fine hair I knew that would make me fuzzy. Fuzzy I might have lived with, but my hair was ruined by the cut she, the instructor, gave. I have photos attached. The blonde photo was the morning of the 19th and the trainwreck was the after photo (would you ever see something like that and make excuses like your trying to in you head as you are reading this?) And the last photos is after putting 3 full rows of hair extensions in, lightening the dark brown and blending it into the blonde that was left underneath. It cost me a fortune and will take years to grow out. Im not asking for an excuse or an apology, don't need it. I am making you aware of the incompetence of someone you hired to train others to cut hair.xoxo girlie

Beyond upset. I called Friday 10/28 to set up a appointment with Grace I. I was going to book it online but then decided to call so nothing would get misunderstood. I asked the lady when her next availability was she told me it was 10/31 at 2:30. I asked her to repeat it to me so I could write it down. Monday 10/31 comes around, I walk in to check in and the gal up front told me that my appointment was with a woman named Riley. I told her that wasn’t correct she told me that’s what her system said. I asked her nicely and said ok, can we please reschedule for this week since there was a computer Mistake. She told me no and said the earliest was 2 weeks away. It’s frustrating that I took the time to call/confirm and still somehow they twist it up and make me feel like I’m the crazy one. Never again.Senija Mujic

Went here to get my cdl class b only and they did a great job teaching in classroom and in trucks. The instructor take their time to teach you. They give both positive feedback and suggestions for improving on. They also give you leads to employers who hire recently graduates. Would recommend for anyone looking to get their cdlKevin leach

Thank goodness, I went to this campus over Iowa State University because I wasn't too sure which was better for doing my automotive classes, this or at Ames. But now, here I am doing my auto classes and experience in ease, it's convenient in terms of price and the majors I have, now that I did the smart thing, and kept the money in my pockets, I will lean forward towards the next 2 years, and ensure I get the education I need. Being a DMACC Commercial Horticulture grad in the mid80's changed my life. Work-study w/Jim Mason in the early years of Country Landscapes also put me in a position to be a Iowa Certified Nurseryman @I.S.U. for 25+ years. I'm sure their 2-1-1 people mean well, but those folks are awful. The information they give out is so outdated. Also, they state they will get back with some information, but then they don't. They still have organizations and phone numbers in their data base that haven't been in existence for years. Just another fraudulent non-profit that accepts money from other non-profits then all the non-profits pass the money back and forth. In the banking world that's called kiting or funneling money. Anyway they do the bare minimum to help anyone, but they sure have some great photos to make believe they are helping somebody besides themselves and their partnerships! United Way of central Iowa does an awesome job add helping lotu middle-income families get Services they need. The location itself is nice and well kempt, and the people who clean it doing awesome job. But their parking lot can sometimes be a real mess. We go to the Dental Clinic here, and the people who work at the dental clinic are always very nice, and do a great job.J fmdevil

My husband and I went to this place a couple weeks ago. Our first time at this location. Well we were shopping around and we overheard an employee who was trying to request time off. Well ends up the managers or whoever they were came over to discuss her time off really loud in front of customers. And basically were telling her she couldn't have the day off she requested and it was just unprofessional. There is a place to do that. And in front of customers is not the place. Arranged for couch pick up to donate and the man who arranged it told me pull out couches are acceptable. Then on day of pick up I got two very rude calls from the truck driver shouting at me that he 1. Couldn’t find the couches and then 2. Once he found them he told me he wasn’t taking the pull out couch and hung up when I began to ask questions why. This happened again when I called him back. As a faith based organization, that gentleman acted totally unprofessional and insulting. Do not use them for your pick ups, plenty of other organizations like disabled vets.Brett

I enrolled myself with ICCC since May of 2012 for AA program online. Even though student adviser has changed 3 or 4 times, they have always called me to see if I needed anything which I never did. Initially, the adviser walked me through the entire admission process on the phone with me. They waived a admission fee for writing and submitting a short essay to explain why I wanted to pursue college education. They have great tech support to assist you with online classes for all your technical issues. Instructors of the classes are so engaged in discussion forums and well structured. Only cons I can think of are that because it is online courses I have been taking, you really have to be resourceful yourself to seek what you need to get through each class you are assigned to every 8 week. My experiences with this college have been nothing but positive. Some classes are more challenging than the others but if you are full time working adult and seeking to obtain degree, Iowa Central Community College is a great place to start your new academic courses. Instructors with this college do care about how you progress in each class and you have to stay connected with them through your own effort. I highly recommend this school.Tammy SK

There online classes are not the best. Alot of the online teachers don't really help. Most of them are there just to collect a paycheck. The staff who is running it not really helpful when needing help with classes. For the amount you pay for online classes, I would just physically attend the classes. I intensely regret attending this college. The Game Design program I was drawn by turned out to be a swindle, cobbled together from unrelated, pre-existing courses. And those courses were little more than shallow explorations of ideas that anyone with an Iowan high school degree will have consumed and spat out long before being asked for thousands of dollars. In those instances where I did learn something new, it would (with alarming regularity) come in the form of a link to a YouTube video I could have readily found on my own. Many professors are regularly unprofessional, rude, menacing and/or flatly combative (though my experience with this sort of behavior was limited to the faculty in the English department). And the courses you pay for may not be the ones you end up with. In one instance, I was given an A for a class and told not to continue to come, when the professor decided that some of us should simply be moved to a different, internet based, turn-key course. In another instance, the class was informed that the course's name and subject matter were due for a change in the coming year, and that the course we were attending would instead teach to that new (and unrelated) material. The library is stocked with ancient, irrelevant books. The staff aren't required to use the school's provided grading and assignment system. I advise anyone reading this to turn away. Consider the near 100% acceptance rate as the warning I should have heeded- and that you still have time to do. If my experience is any indication, Grand View should only be mentioned in the same breath as Trump University, and in no other instance.Claiming Light

Completely my home away from home. Grand View is outstanding for adults who desire to go back to school. The professors are personable, understanding, and more than accommodating. I’ve had to bring my toddler to class with me on several occasions without so much as a second glance from instructors! My advisor is amazingly helpful and wants all of his advisees to succeed. I love the small class sizes and the professor to student ratio is spot on! Even in classes where I have struggled, I was given the extra help I needed because I feel the priority of the staff is having their students do well! I am a veteran and processing my education benefits has always been effortless. There are so many clubs, organizations, and extracurricular activities, students should have no problem finding their niche and becoming comfortable. Reading the few negative reviews sounds more like a reflection of the type of student attending the institution; not the school itself!Heather Jackson

There is a reason the acceptance rate is at 98%. Facilities are outdated. Freshman dorms are absolutely terrible and always had the smell of weed. They have a weight room area, but the weights are trashed and the space is extremely small. The cafetaria is okay the first week and then becomes the same stuff everyday, it is practically non existent on the weekend, the food also has no quality, basically tasted as if it was microwaved or drowned in grease. If you are looking to play a sport the lower level coaches are usually a joke and don't have any business coaching as discussed frequently within the teams. The class sizes are small and the professors are pretty good though. Not a very good atmosphere to be around.Luke Rincker

At the moment, DMACC is not operating as should be. I live just so close. Security is functioning regularly, but offices are closed to the general public as far as I am concerned. I have very mixed feelings about this school. I am currently attending and have had made several changes to my academic program attempting to find what i like. With that being said; about 50% of the teachers are only part time teachers which ended up with 50% of my classes being cancelled, 75% of the time the teachers were late, unprepared, and uneducated on the online portion of the class (which was REQUIRED). I frequently taught myself the content and received little help when i did need to ask for it. Every time i was interested in changing my major, i would talk to the main adviser in the student center to make sure classes would help me and not hurt and make sure i was set up WEEKS in advance. Towards the end of the FALL 2018 semester i was made aware that a class i recently took would no longer help me and i would need to take the higher level of it. So i signed up for the winter classes to get it over with. Then received an email two days AFTER the deadline to get tuition back that i really don't need that class at all. It took my professor and new adviser 7 days to return two separate emails and a voice mail to only be told i was told to contact the wrong person and now must wait until winter break is over to even try and get in contact with someone who MIGHT help me. There are some great teachers there who deserve an award but you can tell the school is most focused on you graduating with a degree from there. Most people are attending here to transfer to a university so here is my advice for those : CONTACT YOUR UNIVERSITY BEFORE YOU ATTEND HERE MOST OF THE CLASSES YOU NEED TO GRADUATE FROM IWCC WILL END UP MEANING NOTHING WHEN YOU TRANSFER TO A LARGER COLLEGE!Tiffany Norton

Wouldn't say it's great but it's not awful either, the majority of the professors really do care and are willing to take time out of their day to help students out and make sure you understand the content as long as they see that you are making an honest effort towards learning the material. On the other hand i'd have to say registration is complete hell as I had to submit my papers for enrollment four times and even then had major issues a few weeks before my first semester started. After three years of an ongoing issue with my now nine year old son, we were able to have hope again after working with Kari Smith in the physical therapy department at DMU. After seeing doctors, neurologists, and another physical therapist things weren't getting better. Now that we have found Kari, there is relief in sight! The Physical Therapy Clinic and Osteopathic Medicine Clinic are both amazing. I have experienced numerous other PT clinics and none use the thorough advanced methods that DMU uses. When the practioiner knows what they are doing (like they do at DMU) dry needling is a game changer in relieving pain and getting your body functioning better and optimally.Jean McCroskey

First of all, the instructors are hit and miss. I took six classes here and three were great while three were absolute jokes. Very obvious they took an online job as a side gig and had no interest in putting forth any effort in helping students or even answering basic questions. That's not a 1-star experience in itself, but one of the instructors took it upon herself to ensure I either failed or dropped her class by locking my assignments and ignoring my emails and calls for two weeks. She didn't like that I addressed her by the wrong name, which was the name she asked us to address her as in the intro discussion board, but she hadn't changed the template designed by another professor so she got smart with me. I took a screen shot of where she asked us to address her by that name and sent it back, she didn't like that. Vindictive and petty, not to mention completely unprofessional. I took this to the administrators and my advisor, only to be ignored and passed around to various departments until finally I escalated to two Deans. After hours worth of back and forth over the course of three weeks and falling behind in the coursework due to inability to access study materials and tests, the issue was resolved – I assume because administrators told the instructor "Hey, you can't be doing this…" but I asked for an extension and was basically told to shut up by one Dean, who said to "put the issue behind you and give yourself enough time to catch up". Keep in mind this is all over email exchange after multiple pleas for someone to pick up the phone and call me. Only after I threatened to transfer to another college did the head honcho Dean call me, and he basically wrote me off as a nuisance and asked me about whether or not I was an A-student and how I performed in other classes – trying to insinuate I was the problem, not his staff. I told him I was looking into other options after my inexcusable experience, and he pretty much said "good luck!" making no attempt to retain me as a student. At that point, I asked for a refund on the class that I had been sabotaged in and he came back three days later and said he would be able to make an exception and issue a ONE TIME 50% refund, but made sure to remind me how special this "favor" was. I transferred to a real college with real educators and staff that actually care about higher education and left this joke of a college behind. Complete waste of time and money. Do yourself a favor and pick another college because interacting with these jokers will likely lower your IQ.Josh Ledbetter

Speaking as a recent graduate (attended from 2018 to 2020), let me just say that your experience here depends on many factors (what you're majoring in, how dedicated you are, what your goals are, etc). Most of the courses here aren't difficult, but if you don't keep up and communicate with instructors then you will fall behind. Luckily there's multiple resources available such as group and private tutoring, disability services, etc designed to help and cater to your specific career needs. It's also very easy to switch your degree program too if you decide something isn't for you. As far as instructors go, some are naturally better than others. Some will be easy to contact and resolve issues with, while others will be more difficult to speak to and distant. I personally only recall one instructor here that made me drop a course due to a lack of communication. All the others were either average or good. You can check reviews for professors on ratemyprofessor.com and get a good idea of what you're getting into beforehand. Aside from academics, you'll find this place doesn't really offer much else. There's a dozen or so clubs, but only a few of these have more than 2 active members that meet regularly (most notably the drama club, which I would definitely recommend as they have a lot of really cool people there). Most people here aren't interested in socializing, and after about 2PM the entire campus becomes pretty desolate and empty. Campus food is limited to a little Subway and attached cafeteria, so get used to eating Subway every day. There's also a bookstore that has food but it's insanely overpriced so I definitely wouldn't recommend it. If you're interested in exercising they also have an attached gym on the lowest level near the cafeteria. All in all, I think Scott Community College is a good investment if you're unsure of what you want to do after high school. It provides a cost-effective means of networking with professionals in your field of interestMinespidur

I got my nursing degree at this school. The staff were helpful and provided me direction. The expectation was that I asked for guidance and the staff and my amazing counselor gave it to me. Especially since I came from another school that offered me none. This school has been a wealth of support for me and provided me the tools to succeed. Financial aid office is sometimes a little bit or miss but that isn't their fault most of the time since the process is often long and non ending but thats why I checked mostly every day I went to school and as soon as info was available they provided it to me and they gave me documents to fill out when it was necessary. I was held responsible for my learning as any student should and the teachers gave me guidance on what to focus on, on my studies. I would go to office hours every day for each of my classes when I did not understand something and depdning on the professor would offer me the thier time to clarify and miscommunication. The library staff were amazing and I often would study till the library would close which was usually at 8pm. Sometimes I wish it would stay open later since at the time I did not have a conclusive learning environment at home but I understand they need to take a census of students that utilize the facility resources at times. Just a word of advice the line for the book store does get long within the beginning of each semester so I would suggest setting aside payments 30mins to and hour to get your books. That or just buy on Amazon which is what I did. Like any student this was my expierence other students will have thier own opinions as well. But this school has helped me in more ways than one and I am forever grateful to this facility .Victor Cruz

Counselors are very informative, can help you on your resume or other job prolifics, and can even set you up with some donated professional attire (Men On the Move, and Dress For Success). Nice buildings, TERRIBLE instructors, especially in their medical-focused science programs. Instructors changing assignments, deleting submitted work, and failing entire sections of classes.. Instructors that play the "gotcha" game, attempting to fail and trick you on material and assignments, as opposed to trying to teach. Have professors ripping material directly from other programs and having you do it for assignments (other universities) that still has other universities logos all over it. Also, you're on your own, admin will not respond / is not on your side. I would spend my money and time elsewhere if AT ALL possible. Had an instructor claim they have the "best program in the state" and then fail to respond by email for about 3 months, and had to get Dean involved. Feels like I'm interacting with high school students for professors. I am from out of state and it turns out Iowa has basically no resources regarding escalating issues with professors – what they say goes and that's it, regardless of how inappropriate or unproductive. DO NOT trust your education to this program and these instructors.Rone Parent

Due to Covid-19, all classes are moved to an online format, I understand this is not their fault and is a perfectly normal thing to do. However, I am still being charged full physical class price for science classes that now consist of 1/2 instructor-made youtube videos (Explaining a power point presentation) and 1/2 of youtube videos just found around. And labs? Its ok, I don't need to learn and practice how to use equipment when there is a 7 year old youtube video posted by a different university doing a different experiment. I could literally could get the same quality education for free using khan acadamy and some online practice problems. All I want is a discount, in return for a product that is not as advertised, but that is too much for them to handle.aksdjljka asjdlkj

Took a class and was required to buy the book. We never used it once for the class but we’re told we might be able to use it for the final so I kept it till the end of the semester. We weren’t able to use it for the final so a few days after the class ends I go to return the book brand new still in the plastic and was told because the semester ended they would take it back but would buy my $150 book back for $20. This college robbed me and doesn’t care about their students of ethics. Years later the only thing that book does is collect dust in a box still unopened.Michael Schwab

The Boone extension of the DMACC network was a very positive experience for me. There are many high quality professors here that are able to spend much more time with the individual student. I was attending ISU at the same time I took classes at DMACC Boone – the campus offered courses that ISU simply didn't. I learned a lot through the courses I took here – I'm glad I discovered DMACC in Boone.J. Mac Jordan
