19 Best G.E.D Programs In Columbus, OH (2022 Updated)

I love Columbus State and this is why: Before Columbus State: Growing up, I was never interested in the information taught in school, because I did not feel like it was applicable to the real world. After a year at a private college, I was originally apprehensive to restart college at any college. I was also scared of a community college. I grew up in Michigan, and I felt like our local community colleges had negative stigmas attached to them. Luckily, my older brother took me into the application office in Delaware, OH to take the entrance exam. I believe I tested out of an english and/or a math class. While at Columbus State: I would like to note that I always attended C-State as I held a part time job (10-20 hours a week). I originally attended an EMT-B class at Columbus State. The class was more challenging than I had anticipated and was pretty time consuming. I received a B in this course, but found employment immediately in the field and felt confident in my skills. A year later, I returned to C-State with the desires to go to nursing school. Thanks to ample meetings with advisors in Health and Human Services, I decided to take some prerequisite nursing classes as there was a waiting list to apply for their nursing program (while I worked part time as an EMT-B). During this year, I found more confidence in my work and studies, feelings of support and encouragement from staff, and rewards from hard work. I was also able to sign up easily for academic accommodations for the first time in my life! I loved my time at Columbus State within this year! I never thought I would love school or receive my first 4.0 GPA in the spring and summer semesters. For the first time, school finally felt fulfilling for me. After Attending Columbus State: I decided to leave C-State after a full academic year, and I pursued a BSN degree through another local school. I often look back at my time at C-State and regret that I did not take more classes here while saving a decent amount of money! I would suggest night classes if you are willing and able. I found that students were more likely to be hard working, more mature, disciplined, and also employed. I also found professors who taught night classes were often from OSU and more understanding. Generally my teachers were all very competent, funny, and held experience in the world. The only negative experience that I found was dealing with C-Stat's Police department staff and accessing their gym/locker room. Students must sign up manually for the gym locker rooms every semester at C-State's Police department and then wait for several days for your card to be accepted from security/police. This system seems dated and non-productive. I feel like this process should be easily automated. This issue led to a negative experience I had with a police officer that identified as Sergeant Diamond. I felt like this officer escalated my personal situation while being disrespectful and patronizing. Another time I was eating a meal in my car between classes when a police car pulled up to me and asked why I was parked between two spots in an empty parking lot and then asked me to pick a spot. I'm sure the police department deals with things they don't want to. I could have been lucky and experienced two poor attitudes on hard days, but I do not feel like the police department is fulfilling their mission that states they want to provide "exceptional customer service" for their students based on my only two experiences with them. I would take a look at how the police staff is trained at C-State.Connor Hill

I have enjoyed Columbus State and majority of the people I’ve met here while on track to my BA but this college needs some serious restructuring. The biggest thing I wish Cstate would look into is their faculty. When I go to ratemyprofessor.com and see many of them at a 1 to 2 star rating, that concerns me. I have personally had good and bad professors here and majority of the good ones were adjunct professors, the bad ended up being tenured faculty. I wish the college would look into the gripes students have and start to question whether or not they should be hiring adjunct professors to replace them. The only other major issue I’ve had is from advisors. The point of the advisor is to advise the student on their education path, but when I have a genuine question or concern, interrupting/having a snarky attitude doesn’t come off as professional to me. One last thing, please talk with the finance department about putting a budget together for another parking garage. I don’t go during peak hours anymore but when I did parking was atrocious. It will be 6 weeks this semester (Spring 2019) before CSCC releases financial aid refunds. I cannot believe they get away with this! OSU is 9 days after the start of the semester! Some people rely on these excess funds to survive another semester of school! This should be illegal and I’m pretty sure it is because according to federal financial aid funds are to be released up to a max of 14 days after the start of a semester! Insane to make people wait 6 weeks+ to receive their refund. Also, parking is obnoxious here any time of day. It also seems to me that each department does not have a good linear structure of teaching so each professor is just kind of doing their own thing whichever way they feel like doing it. Some classes are too long some are too short. It really feels like no one is in control here it’s just a free for all I guess. Employees are not friendly in any way shape or form. Honestly the only good thing about this school is how cheap it is. “You get what you pay for.” 🤷‍♂️614 Realness

This place has a wonderful staff that has accepted me like family. I dearly love them. Our friendships have grown for almost 3 years now. Chef Jason, runs a tight ship, the food is 5 star quality. They pay attention to detail. All the food that comes out of their kitchen has to be perfect or it won't come out. Plan events here, you will be surprised, food is healthy & delicious. The technology program is why I went there and the teacher Mr. Pasie knows his stuff for the electronical computer technology class. He can be funny at times to keep your attention and liven up the atmosphere. The college classes you go there for are the real deal college level and I got certifications. You can get internships if available. The core classes are where a star was reduced (mostly for math calc 2). A lot easier then Granville's and Granville brings good work ethic. Quick note, the English was good both college and regular, chemistry was good, history had a good teacher. First algerbra 2 was a lot of algerbra 1 and always use of calculators. I got stuff done before classes ended, everything and maybe day after. The problem is some students from less fortunate schools don't put an effort and can turn things in later etc. The math class pre calc with subs was a joke(more on that later). I scored 80 percent knowledge on history pre test (highest). English class was good. Good teachers but during pre calc for my last year a teacher that was old and apparently sick got subs who did not know how to teach math. It wasn't till later we got some that did. Overall college classes great and there are good core classes but Granville would probably be more vigourous in a good way comparison.Nick Maag

Terrible staff. Not everyone, but more than normal. I was made to feel singled out all the time, and no I wasn’t “the bad kid” because everyone else in my class was also confused as to why this was happening. I had all a’s and b’s, maybe a c or two, but somehow my instructor and the higher ups felt the need to pick me apart all the time. Not to mention the program that I spent all that money on? I never even got my certification! The school police officer also once threatened to send me to “juvey” because I wasn’t in class one day- I was crying in the bathroom because I had an abscessed tooth which soon after required intense surgery. And yes, I told him why I was in the bathroom. He sent a plethora of female staff to come inside and yell at me instead of trying to help me in any way. And my mom was already on the way to pick me up! I went to the bathroom because the office person thought I was exaggerating and therefore wouldn’t let me sit in the office for 15 minutes. The school is the perfect example of great taste horrible execution. Lab teachers are great, general ed teachers are a mixed bag, and the school administration is the closest thing to rolling a flaming tire down a hill into a gasoline soaked orphanage you can have, without getting a felony charge. I'm happy with my education from lab, and from 1/4th of the general ed teachers, but the rest of the time there is pure trash. I got a life threatening illness, and had to put off going to the doctor to not miss school, and to boot, they doxx you as a graduation present.Jediotty

I got accepted in the 31st class at the Columbus, Ohio Per Scholas. They are a nonprofit organization that take people who are unemployed, or underemployed, and put them through a 15 week training course. The course teaches you about IT to get you ready to take the CompTIA Exams. Depending on the class you pick you will have the opportunity to get either a certificate in A+, or certificates in A+ and Network+. The staff at Per Scholas are great. They all have made me feel welcome, and they all have been very professional. Right now Per Scholas is not all that busy. My class started then a few weeks later another class started, from what I hear by 2020 they are going to step up the number of classes because Columbus and the surrounding areas are needing IT professionals. I can say this has been a great opportunity, and I am seeing that it is going to be life changing as well. If everything goes my way I will finally be living a life where I am comfortable. If that sounds like something you would like then start looking into how to become a student at Per Scholas. The way you get accepted into Per Scholas is pretty much like it is when you are trying to get a job. They have you take some test's, and there are certain requirements to be accepted. They do a background check, and they have you come in for some interview's. I only had one, so I am not sure if they have more than one like some companies do. P.S. If you do plan on joining Per Scholas I would like to give you some advice. 1. The day you start you need to take your class work and studying as serious as you can. 2. Do not take this opportunity for granted. Think of it as your one and only chance to better your life and actually have a career that you love, and not one where you are breaking your back. 3. Do not miss, or think that missing a day or hour is not serious because every second matters. 4. Study! Study! Study! You want to be sure that when you go to take your exams you feel comfortable and not nervous. 5. Make sure you commit. Do not work while in Per Scholas. You are there from 9am to 4pm, so you have to look at it as your job. 6. Make sure you have your finances planned out for at least a month after graduating Per Scholas. Going down this path will be real hard because you have to give Per Scholas your full attention for 15 weeks straight. No one in my class is working. The one's who was working in the beginning quit because they could not keep going because your work does not end after leaving class. You have to study at home a lot. I would like to tell everyone at Per Scholas just how grateful I am for the opportunity they gave me, and I am going to do my best to not let them down and show them that they did not make a mistake letting me in here. My life has not gone right since I was 21, and I could not catch a break. I am 35 now, and finally things are looking up for me.Jim Turner Jr

Per Scholas is not only totally real, but there is also NO CATCH–just show up and work hard and you will learn everything you need to know to get started in an IT career. Attempted to enroll in this school, but it was nothing but a fight and a waste of energy! They constantly gave false information which lead to nothing but confusion, distrust and conflict. Complete waste of time and a drop in my credit score for nothing. I Do not recommend signing up. ***** Response to Owner It’s very displeasing to express dissatisfaction with an owner about their establishment, and without any investigation, or review they jump in to defend their employees. Making claims and stating what their many employees would or wouldn’t do. Stating his employees are without fault or error apparently ever. It’s saddening…. I will admit, it is a sketchy start. Try as you might, you won't find prices online. I'll keep to that and say that this course(s) are worth every cent. The Instructors are knowledgeable and always available via call, text or email outside of class hours, as well as a multitude of mentors throughout the week in a "flex" classroom. There is a LOT of material. If you are not motivated and dedicated to exploring the Information Technology field, this course(s) can be very fast paced. I have not gone to this school, but several of my friends have. For each and every one of them, it was a terrible experience. They all started thinking they could get two-year degrees, and six years later not one of them has one. Here is a smattering of the things they have experienced: – A professor who canceled a class in order to watch a football game, and for any other reason he wanted – in the end the every-other-week class met only three times during the entire semester – Tests that cover things never discussed either in class or in textbooks – Bureaucratic nightmares regarding transcripts, unclear requirements for graduation, being told a class was required and then later finding out it wasn't – Online classes where the professor logs on once a week and responds to no emails – The school literally does not provide all of the classes needed to finish the degrees they 'offer', only preliminary classes – the degree must be finished elsewhere, assuming the credits even transfer (good luck) – Terrible communication both with professors and administrators, and a clear sense that no one there cares about any of the students at all – Classes that teach basically nothing, for instance an HTML 'class' for which all of the material could have been learned during an hour using google. – Unclear syllabuses, missing graded items in the final grade, midterms going ungraded and never returned, expensive books that are never used This is by no means a comprehensive list. I'm putting up this review to hopefully spare other young, desperate people from what this farce of an institution has done to the people I care about. Yes, the campus looks nice and the tuition rates are low, but you will not get an education here, and no one in the building will care how badly their lies and neglect will screw up your life.Irena

Academic advisors are very difficult to get ahold of and when you one gets ahold of them they are disrespectful. They tell you to just email them your problem which are then returned with an automatic email about where to find things. You'll get this email even if it has the things you didnt ask for. The advisors also tell you if you do meet them that you are wasting their time with questions about the direction of your academic career.Michael (Zello88)

I received email correspondence and many phone calls of reminders to renew my file and all of the steps and things to complete for online trainings but I turn in an application to renew and the application just sits for weeks after getting a confirmation that it was turned in without anything being done to complete renewals. It makes it hard to feel appreciated and valued for our work we do with students and schools especially when we keep signing up to serve in this role every year and it makes us not able to look for and get jobs on our calendars and worry that we can not get work which is scary when it is our livelihood and makes us feel discouraged.J Mac

DACC truthfully changed my life!! All of the staff at DACC has so much care for their students & their success! It's such a great place to find yourself and meet amazing people who are just like you. I never felt like I fit in at a regular high school, but joining DACC was like joining a giant, supportive family! I've always struggled to feel like school was more than just test scores that define your path, but after completing my academics at DACC, I finally understood that it was so much more than that! I discovered what I am passionate about, my love for learning, how to make life-changing connections, and what I want to do for the rest of my life! People around you may say stuff like "it's way too good to be true" (believe me, I heard that one too), but DACC went beyond my expectations! From the parent point of view, I highly recommend DACC. Two of our daughters attended and completed their technical programs. One is now a successful stylist in an upscale salon and the other is putting her skills to use at a college offering web design and other media arts. Both loved their labs and excelled academically. DACC also provides leadership opportunities through SkillsUSA and Business Professionals of America (BPA). Get your student involved in these organizations! Teachers are caring, responsive, and skilled. Counselors, administrators, and all personnel are also very professional, responsive, and helpful. The buildings are clean and well-maintained. The Delaware Area Career Center was the place of some of my most enjoyable experiences as a high school student. As a student of DACC, I had countless memorable experiences and opportunities that I will be able to take with me throughout my life. The friends I made at DACC were some of my best high school friends. Spending 2.5 hours of them every week day certainly make you close. Columbus City Schools Adult@Community Education has a great LPN nursing program. The Faculty/Staff work hard and work one on one with the students. The school may not have all the fancy "bells and whistles" but it has the best MEAT and POTATOES around. Students must work hard and prioritize,and its not easy. Rest assured,that the staff will work with you and they really do care about their students. It's also one of the cheapest around. Trust me,I am 52 and looked around at other schools prior. Great program! Before coming here I had been in and out of a couple RN programs. But the experience i had here was like no other. The staff here truly cares about you becoming a competent nurse and they care about your success. You give every tool you need to gain the knowledge, skills and confidence to be an amazing Nurse. There are also resources if you need other assistance. Once in the program you become a family with your class mates and even the staff. THIS SCHOOL IS AND 100% ONE TO STEER CLEAR FROM. THE MAJORITY OF THE STUDENTS THAT ATTEND ARE TROUBLE MAKERS. THE TEACHERS DO NOTHING DISCIPLINE WISE FOR FOWL LANGUAGE. I graduated in the class of 2018. Sure there were some bad eggs that attended Tolles, but there are bad eggs at every high school regardless. Going through Tolles spring boarded me into my career field of interest. I went from the Computer Networking and Support Technology program to working as a part time field technician while attending college for a degree in computer science. If you want a chance to jumpstart your career in highschool definitely check out Tolles!Brendan Swartz

Exceptionally poor communication on every level from this school! I get updates & emails multiple times a day from my child's home school but only get maybe one a month from Tolles. Hands on instruction is good, but academic instruction is sub par with lack luster teachers & leadership. The people here are wonderful and genuinely want to help students succeed. There are many students here with very different needs, and all are accommodated for as individuals. Tutors are free, although all students are required to buy a book. This office is a wonderful resource for adults with low literacy trying to read, as well as ESL adults who either struggle using the language or just need some practice. I only give it three stars because there are still many ways that the CLC can improve by adding more resources and techniques to their teaching, but they are honestly a great place to start for the average working adult in Columbus.Joe Lines
