The entire art department is a joke. Calhoun has crippled its own photography program by getting rid of the best studio photography teacher it has probably ever had just because he didn't have a degree yet he's been a professional working photographer for about 30 years. Calhoun has a bad history of hiring people to teach that don't do their job. The dean and the underlings don't care if you have a problem if it affects their staff. Calhoun is famous for minimizing the parking spaces despite the rising number of students attending each year. The financial aid department is worthless too. What I love about Calhoun is that they want to make sure you know how to do. Hands down Calhoun is one of the be places to study IT in the state. The classes are small enough that you are able to get hands on training and your taught by instructors who work in the field. Not someone who is good at taking test and decided to teach. The only complaint I have is that Calhoun should try to improve the student experience more. It's hard to accomplish considering most students are only there 1-2 years but there should be more university sponsored events live movie nights, dances, etc.Christoper J

I've been going back and forth with the Cashier's Office today because they are in charge of distributing pell grant refund checks at the *beginning of the semester. It's now March and I have recieved anything because.no one told me until last week that if you have a second term split class that you won't see the check until AFTER that class starts. Even then no one ever answered.my questions until today when I had.to go see the Dean of Students. She wasn't in so they brought in the Financial aid person (should have been done since January). Long story short, that person told me to drop my class since it would be easier for them. I've had nothing but bad experiences at Shelton and it's no wonder that not many people after the CC dont continue their education. Literally the worst school ever. The advisors do absolutely nothing to help you. When you call they just tell you what you want to hear and don't help at all. I called last week to make sure everything was in order for me to sign up for classes and I was told yes. This morning I go to sign up and there is a hold on my account keeping from signing up. This school doesn't accept outside loans but don't offer additional financial assistance to those who less fortunate or don't stay at home with mom and dad. This school is about money to graduate. I am a current employee who graduated from Wallace Community College. As a student it was the best move for me to make immediately following high school as I was not socially ready to attend a major university. At Wallace Community College I learned how to study for collegiate level classes and manage my time in such a way that differed from high school. All of the courses I took transferred seamlessly to Auburn University which saved me money. Now as an employee I see all that goes on behind the scenes. They need to offer more degrees like RV repair, Cooking school, Fashion Design, Sewing, Interior Design, Private investigation, Restaurant management, etc. They keep turning out the same degrees that over saturates the work force and brings down the pay so bad that a high percentage of graduates go into something else or use their degree as a side hustle. The department dealing with transcripts is very unprofessional and rude. I have been trying for four months to get three copies of my transcript. They sent one although I put 3 where it asked how many. I mailed in another request for two more. I never received them. I emailed the admissions department to see what happened. They responded back asking where to send it and I responded. However, I never received them. I then called and was told to do another request. I did another request in September. I just spoke with them only to tell me that they sent only one again on October 3rd. Her reason was because I only had one place listed to send and she didn't see why they would need two copies. So I then had to explain that it was going to the same place. Once received, the department would see to it that all three committee members got a copy. I shouldn't have had to explain that since on the request I asked for two. Furthermore more it's not for her to know why! What's the purpose of putting the number needed on the form if they only send the number they feel should be sent. No where on the transcript request does it ask why you need them. It just ask how many. I now have to send off another request for the third one. By the time I request another one and wait for it in the mail, it will be past the deadline at my job. I have tried to reach someone by phone in Human Resources for several days. No messages returned. The automatic greeting message tell you to press the # key to speak with an operator. You never speak to an operator which I am sure is by design. It just keeps reporting the options which no one answers! You call any other professional business you are at least able to speak with an operator. This gives a harbinger of the type of administration you will have to deal with if they answer the phone or you show up in person. Had awful experiences in past attempting to get transcripts. Tarted at the door during the orientation every staff member was smiling and welcoming, I felt the passion of the speakers, they didn't want the new students to go wondering about what they should do. It's a cheap college and a good start to a college career. The financial aid office and basically anything coming from the Bailey Center is a nightmare to deal with. 95% of the time, they had no idea what I was talking about. And I just about had a come apart on multiple occasions with them. Make sure to hound them when you ask for your transcripts, it took them months for them to give me my transcripts. The bookstore is pretty outrageous in its pricing. Also, coming from someone who went to a challenging school system, the work was usually not hard. In fact, I am terrible with math, but I breezed through 75% of my first math class within two weeks at Wallace. Most of the facilities are updated except the men's dorms, theatre, and the computer science center, which are not well taken care of. Great school, received my Associates and transferred afterwards to UAH. Really sweet people. If you live far away be prepared to only communicate in-person for Financial Aid and Admissions. It's very difficult to reach people by phone or email but once you walk in (unless it's right before the semester starts) there is usually no line and a short wait to talk to the right people. Also, this school is known for its nursing program and they take great pride in that. Be aware that the course load for this major is at university-level (minimum). Seriously, it is very aggressive but the job placement and license pass-rates are stellar. I enjoyed the faculty at this campus, especially in math. I took business classes too, and most of those instructors were super friendly and easy to follow. It was great! My son and I went there today to get him settled in, prior to classes starting on the 19th. The campus is small. The grounds and buildings are in good upkeep. His dorm room was nice and fairly clean and he seems to have been blessed with a friendly roommate. In fact, all of the people we met thus far on campus were very personable. Other than the three and a half hours drive there and back the overall experience was great! I pray that my son is surrounded by only the best people who wish him no harm and will only help him along this path he chose to pursue his goals. He was placed in a new job within one week of graduation and is now earning over $30 per hour. He had tried another program right out of high school, but Weld South proved a more beneficial investment for his career. This company has been very dishonest and unfair to myself and my family. We were excited to get my son some help as he had become unmotivated and uninterested in school. The first problem began at the initial sign up process. We were expecting for him to be tutored in Chelsea since it is the center closes to us. AFTER I ran my credit and got approved with Comenity Bank they told me that my son would not be able to go to that center because it was closing. Since I had already ran my credit right after bankruptcy might I add, I decided to take the further drive to get my son some help. The one in Hoover turned out to be too far away. Much further than we were told and we were unable to attend the tutoring. Sylvan has continued to bill us for services not rendered. FINALLY gave us a 1275 credit and left us with a balance of over $600 for services we did not receive. I had just got my credit score back over 700s and was in the process of purchasing a new home. This company has completely ruined it for me and my family and has continued to not respond after numerous calls texts and voicemails. I would not recommend Sylvan to ANYONE! I do urge others who have had nightmares with this company to share. After mo the of no response this is the only other option I had is to post a review. My son has been struggling with reading for a long time. He has a late birthday, so I always thought that I should have held him back. I signed him up for extra tutoring at the school, which was great but it wasn’t enough. My friend introduced us to Jason and his staff about mid school year. It was the best decision we made to follow through with the sessions. My son was making D’s and F’s on his reading assignments prior to him attending the learning center. He was nervous to read aloud in class and his confidence level was non-existent. Fast forward 4 months later…he ended the quarter with all A’s, even in reading. My son started going to Sylvan at the beginning of 5th grade and was 2 1/2 grade levels behind in reading. He is about to finish the 2nd nine weeks of 6th grade on the A/B honor roll! I personally was not happy with my experience at Body Logic. I enrolled November 2019. I was given a tour by Renee and she had stated that every Wednesday would be a theory day and made it seem like she would be there to teach. However, I believe I only had 3-5 theory days where a sweet instructor (I believe she is no longer at body logic) “lectured” the entire time I attended (I was attending full time for 6-7 months) Everything I learned I taught myself. I didn’t mind at the time since I am hard working and able to learn on my own through the textbook and research but I regret paying $10,000 cash to teach myself. Some people are also not able to teach themselves. Renee mostly worked on her clients and my classmates and I rarely saw her teach us. The times that she came in we mostly heard her talk about her financial situation with the school. Due to the financial situation she fired the sweet lady who was the state board prep instructor. Therefore, I had NO state board prep at all- I had to do it all on my own and figure it out with my classmates at the time. All of my classmates and I were unhappy but were not able to say anything since we were afraid she would not allow us to graduate if we did. Now that I have graduated and gotten my Esthetician license I’m not afraid to speak up about my experience. I understand esthetics school only teaches you the basics and how to pass state board – You must advance your education through other classes and resources. I just graduated from esthetics and I was blessed with the best teachers ever that taught me everything I needed to know and more to be able to pass my state board practical and written exams. The treatment rooms and office are extremely professional- it’s easy to forget it’s a school. I made so many friends with students as well as staff. Review Summary

The end of last school year and this 2020-2021 school year to say it’s been a lot would be an understatement, but a lot of what depends on perspective. This school year the kids came home and some parents found new careers( homeschool teachers…). Sylvan has provided my family reinforcements for learning. My then kindergartner left school for spring break and didn’t go back until September of his first grade year…yes the struggle was real. Sylvan has not only brought us back up to speed as far as reading levels but also gives a sense of normalcy with student teacher interaction that has become unfortunately not so normal. We love Sylvan and we appreciate everything they have to offer especially in times such as these. Well worth it and I highly recommend!Lauren Bradford

My son had his first visit to Sylvan this week for help with Calculus homework. It is difficult to find a Calculus tutor and we were happy they had someone capable of tutoring at this level. The first experience was positive in that my son walked away saying he now understood a few more things he had not understood previously. He was then able to accomplish some of his homework on his own. The appointment was easy to make, good communication, and appointment started on time. Sylvan got us in right away as they knew we needed help ASAP. We will be returning next week and if things continue to be positive we will use throughout the school year. My oldest son struggled in Reading and tested below grade level when he was in elementary school. We sent him to Sylvan during summer break and by the beginning of the next school year he was testing at grade level. Then again when he struggled with English & writing in high school, we sent him back to Sylvan & he showed great improvement. He went on to graduate high school & college. The Lovelady Center is amazing!!! I'm in phase 5! I graduate next month. I'm clean and sober but most importantly I have a personal relationship with God. Something I've never had before. So for the ones bashing this place UR WRONG! This place doesn't steal our food stamps they feed us with them and very well and not every client here has food stamps so there also feeding them everyday 3 times a day FREE! We don't work for free we get stipend checks twice a month. We pay 1 free of 500.00 and THATS ALL!! They let us go to the thrift store and get FREE clothes if we need them. EVERY WEEK they give us toilet paper, pads,tampons,shampoo, tooth brush etc and also anything we need for our kids for FREE!! The ones on here bashing are most likely hearing negative stuff from a friend or family member that left the program bc they wasn't ready to get sober! I have never met 2 women that have hearts as big and genuine as Mrs. Brenda and Mrs. Malinda… The Lovelady Center changed my life and gave me all the tools to utilize out in the world to remain sober and drug free. My relationship with my kids has been restored and I now have a handsome grandson that I am able to spend lots of time with. Had I not went to The Lovelady Center there is no telling if I would even still be alive. Thank you so much for all that you have done for me Mrs. Brenda and Mrs. Malinda. Man, this place is so amazing!! Everyone is just so nice here, and they love u so much… This place has taught me how to live life without drugs. I learned how to love myself ❤️ I wouldn't wanna be anywhere else. We're one big family, here at the lovelady center it doesn't matter where you come from, They take you in and treat you like family, they even let you have your sweet babies here . This is probably the worst place when it comes to allocating funds for families in need of help, especially during this pandemic. I applied last year, 2020. Did not receive any updates until February 2021. After being told my application was the 2nd on the list and they will be starting the assistance at the beginning of March, after several phone conversations of being told the had not received direction from the government as to how to allocate fund that they will start assistance in April. As of today, I received a phone call that said they would not be helping at all and to try another agency. This is the most horrible process to have experience from beginning to the end, starting with the receptionist down to the assistance that no one has received. Where did the money go?elizabeth allen

This program offered me the opportunity to learn skills that I’m going to use for the rest of my life, and I feel that I got more than I signed up for. Mr. Scott goes above the call of duty to make sure that every student is taken care of, questions answered, plenty of demonstration, and he goes outside of his way to teach more that the curriculum has to offer. He gave insights about the “real world” of this field, and gave us extra teaching on subjects that he felt we needed on top of everything else, which was awesome. I was hired before I graduated, I have an amazing job, and I love what I do. All thanks to Mr. Scott and Jeff State. I can say, a lot of the time, you don’t feel like you’re in “school”, it’s a very fun and rich atmosphere for learning, with very little stress. All of us students helped one another as well.
