20 Best G.E.D Programs In Baltimore, MD (2022 Updated)

I had a good experience here in getting my associates. However, my sister who just started attending here has had multiple incidents of faculty (advisors and front office) being incompetent or unable to answer questions that they should know the answers to. I personally didn't have these experiences because I didn't engage much with faculty but this has severely hampered her experience here. She even had a replacement teacher for one going on maternity leave who would say rude remarks to students, and even when multiple students complained, the department head and the dean of student affairs refused to rectify the situation, aka reprimand the teacher at the very least. I hope WorWic figures some things out for the sake of current and future students because, other than what I mentioned, it is a good environment and most teachers encourage you to work hard and succeed.Leah B

School is ok. Some teachers are good others are bad. You pay other people for you to teach yourself. Do not take A & P here Lab sucks you sit there and you don't even get to dissect anything. I re took the class because they said my lab wasn't good enough from my previous school. Yet this lab you don't do anything and the reason is because the college can't afford it because ppl aren't enrolling. And if you need to get a hold of a professor that you have online classes with good luck it wouldn't happen. I have heard great praise about the nursing program. I wanted to thank Academic Advisor Lindsay Johnson for being kind, compassionate and extremely helpful with me over the phone last week. I had signed up for the summer session of EMS classes and I had to cancel them as a result of my father passing. I called thinking it was too late to register for the fall and not only was Lindsay compassionate and kind-she took care of everything right then and there. I realize that my opinion can't stand for the whole school (chemical engineering​ 2017), but having held a student job that allowed me to see a lot of the behind the scenes stuff and was part of a department that was in the midst of a lot of changes, I do think I can offer some insight. First, unless you're a proactive genius who wants to do research their entire life, don't bother coming here. This school doesn't care about industry or the jobs it offers. This school talks a lot, but doesn't follow through very well. For instance, the higher ups tend to be good, but the people below them are horrible. The career center is a joke, the admin people are flakes who pretend to know what they're doing, and the professors are very hit or miss. How this school got "best undergrad teaching" is a mystery to me. The only good majors are comp sci and bio. The rest of the departments, especially mine, are either full of hot air, stupid in their decision making, or just plain lost. This university attracts a lot of insanely bright students to their undergraduate program and the stem majors would suck without them. God knows the STEM majors don't get genuine help from their professors. I had to go an extra year because of the negligence of my department and two of the many professors that left during my time were upset and thought I should have graduated a year earlier. I almost transferred twice. My department, similar to many others, don't have any connections to companies in industry. This school also hates transfer students despite having a lot of them. Don't expect to finish any degree in 4 years if you're transferring in. There's no social life here because the school is filled with pasty nerds. This is the worst school in the state of Maryland (and possibly in the US). Several buildings on campus are run down (the Sondheim building has even had asbestos in it). The quality of the food is poor and it's overpriced. The social life sucks. It's not a well-known school outside of Maryland. And most importantly, classes are insanely difficult (especially for STEM majors). The classes aren't designed to weed out the slackers. They're designed to weed out the people who try their absolute hardest (and sacrifice things such as sleep and a decent social life) but can't keep up with the immense workload thrown at the students and/or approach assignments with the same exact mindset as the professors. Exams are geared less toward understanding important subject material and more toward deciphering what the professors are actually asking. This school is nothing but a weed out school. I know students who are very intellectually gifted yet still struggle with courses only because of the professors. Almost every professor, by the way, couldn't care less about students and (one would think) they take pride in handing out bad grades – maybe because it inflates their ego of "how brilliant they are compared to others". One more note on the courses – for many courses there is one week between the final exam and the last normal exam of the semester. The biggest mistake I've ever made was attending this "school". I can honestly say that attending UMBC feels like a form of imprisonment. I can't overstate how much I truly despise this school. Please don't make the same mistake I did – go to UMD, Towson, or really anywhere but UMBC.Bucky C

There are a lot of great things about UMBC, the career center is great and there are some top-notch professors. There are some problems though. One annoying thing is they nickel and dime you for everything. Parts of the campus are run down looking and they wont go there during the tour. Most of my professors have been good but my girlfriend who is an art major has had more than one professor that just had students watch online videos instead of teaching them animation topics. -Library carpet is worn out -Chairs in library are so gross your arms stick to them -ITE building has chairs with foam falling out -You must pay to play ping pong or any game in the "game room" -The billing dept gives you very little time to pay the bill and is quick to issue an expensive late fee -Social life isn't great on campus Another thing worth noting that has unfortunately been getting worse is UMBC's leadership imposing their political motives on students through 'updates' on current events. Updates are fine but the vocabulary used in some of the 'updates' is disrespectful to some students who don't agree with the same viewpoints as 'UMBC leadership'. Let's stay professional UMBC cut out the political BS or we will end up like Berkeley…John Park

Word of advice: try and transfer out of this ghetto school as soon as possible. It'll save you the headache. TAKE ONLINE CLASSES! That way, you will not have to deal with their crap. The only good thing you'll find about this school is the cheap tuition, some good professors if you can find the right ones. So far, I managed to have good ones. And a few nice students along the way. But the unprofessional, unorganized with the admins, staff, etc is a nightmare. I'm speaking from experience with the financial aid and trying to sign up for classes. They act like they don't know what they're doing. Not to mention, you try to be friendly and they give you attitude like you did something wrong. Plus, the staff and admins are incredibly immature and straight up bullies. When you ask for help, they will act irritated, rude or expect you to it yourself. You know that you are going to be around students all day long, and if that is something you cannot handle or deliver civil professionalism, then why are you working here to begin with? Oh yeah, because they just hire anybody, and just hungry for a paycheck. Oh and also, people just tell you different answers or just straight up lie to you. If I had the choice, I would not spend another semester here for another minute. They really need to do something about this ghetto, unprofessional, unorganized, low class school and hire better admins, staff, etc too. I'll be so glad when I'm able to leave this school because I will not miss it. I'm sticking to my statement that Virginia schools are better. Also, another thing to add is that the advisers do not know how to do their jobs! They are just there for the title, so know what YOU want and YOUR plan, because these advisers will just tell you anything. In addition, they will act so conceited to make you look stupid. That's why I'm going with my own plan, and I can't wait to leave this school in the spring of 2018. It has been nothing but very poor. They just want your money. This school is nothing but a joke. I hated this college including all staffs, administration and president of this college I had many issues with back when I was attending this college. Yes, I graduated in 2004, made very high grades and achieve my goals, but the President of this college did nothing about my situation. She failed to do her job claiming that she will not bar a student for harassing me. She is very lucky I did not sue her before I graduated. Other people has complained about allowing non-visitors attending to this school for no reason. This brings a major concern about safety. I would advise no one attend to this school. It sure has very poor administration. I do not care what that president said, she is a very poor administrator. I am glad I am moving out of this state and I will be a excellent administrator this president of this college. I wonder why there are so many bad reviews about this school. It's not as bad as I thought or as I read. Yes, I did have a bad impression at first because I was supposed to take four courses, now I'm taking three because of their carelessness. But that's the only problem I've encountered here. My professors are good. I read bad reviews about the financial aid also but there was no problem with my financial aid and everything went smoothly. Overall, this school is not so bad. In the beginning I was letting alot of things and thoughts hold me back from pursuing what I really wanted but once I took this class I felt more confident that I can do anything I put my mind to if I put the work into it. Mrs lisa taught me that it isnt what someone else want for you , its about what you want and how far you able to go get it. No matter the barrier being thrown at you , You can overcome it. Sometimes selfcare is needed. You can not be the BEST for someone else if you arent the BEST within your self. You have to love yourself first. If you truley want it anything is possible. Never give up ! Failure isnt an option. I signed up for Lisa’s Masterclass training for business. I am not new to coaching, however I am new to business. This school wasted so much of my time. I was using a veteran's program that ends this year, and I spoke with their admissions, the VA rep, and academic advising and they put me thru the whole process of enrolling, having transcript sent, etc. Then I was told by the VA rep to enroll right away, but I was not allowed to until I spoke with Advising. At that time I was told I was good to go and could enroll on Oct 24th. I called the school to enroll on that day and was told I was too late. The classes I would be enrolling for start the following January. I was given contradictory information at every step, and now with such a time crunch on my hands I have to start at square one talking with a bunch of other schools to see who can fit me in. Meanwhile I've wasted a whole week waiting for this school's "first day to register" and paying to send my transcript. I am not at all a happy camper, and will never do business with this school again. Very disorganized and not very professional in their dealings and customer service.Christopher Hinton

My daughter took a class with Professor Yvonne Chaney. There was poor communication, minimal instruction, and unfair grading. My daughter has been a straight A student her whole life. Taking APs and honors classes. Never below a 4.0 and she currency has a 5.3. She has been doing very good in English, which is why she chose to take this class. This school treats me like trash. A lot of things they have done since going here is sneaky and weird and if it continues I’d have to report them to the real government. The Baltimore Beauty and Barber School is fantastic!! The school is conveniently located in the Golden Ring Plaza, right across the street from the Aldi's food market and from the outside in the place and people are wonderful. Pulling up you see a huge building with a big "BALTIMORE BEAUTY & BARBER SCHOOL" sign and the parking lot has plenty of parking. Walking in I was greeted by a young lady, Aniah who has a personality that can light up the entire building. She was knowledgable, respectful, accommodating, and was very patient considering how busy she was and how many questions my daughter and I had for her. She had a line building up behind us, she had other people and staff asking things of her but she found a way to juggle it all and still make everybody happy. I truly admire her professionalism and as for first impressions go, she was off the charts amazing! We got there around 11:30AM and the place was already pretty busy but they were moving costumers along surprisingly quick for how many people were in the lobby. We waited about 5 mins and were able to be seen. The best part about the place is the atmosphere. The students and staff are so welcoming and professional, they made me feel like the center of attention the entire time I was there. Its one of those places that even when your done your service, you still want to hang out and enjoy the fun. You can tell the students genuinely enjoy being there and the staff genuinely enjoy teaching their students. When you have quality staff that enjoys their job, it rubs off on the students because the entire building is radiating with positive energy and makes for such a welcoming and fun environment. Lastly and probably the most important is the cleanliness of the building. The entire time I was there, they had a maintenance man cleaning the building. He was wiping the mirrors, cleaning the windows, cleaning the bathrooms, etc. The cleanliness of the building went above and beyond and that also shows the owners and staff actually care about their place of work. The only minor problem I have with the school is that we are not allowed to make appointments and that they operate on a walk-in only basis. They explained perfectly well why they operate like this and its solely for the benefit of the students (I love that they actually care about the students) but it would still be nice to be able to set appointments. My daughter and I have been to this school 3 times now and each time has been as pleasant as the last. The school left such a lasting impression on my daughter, she is seriously considering signing up with no previous interest in becoming a hair stylist. Thank you Baltimore Beauty & Barber School, we will definitely be back! P.S. I don't like to say anything bad about people because I am all for people trying to better themselves. I was thinking about enrolling my daughter in this school but immediately turned off when I stopped by to check it out. The place was grossly unorganized. From the parking lot to inside the school, the neighborhood and school gives a creepy vibe. It just felt intensely out of control and lacking structure.The staff does not come across as polished or professional just a bad untamed environment not conducive for learning.The admission and enrollment guy comes across as somewhat aggressive and pushy trying to pressure me to make a decision. It felt more like a car salesman interaction and they should give people a chance to really feel the place out instead of aggressively overselling themselves. I did not have the heart to tell them this is not a good match for my daughter but I believe it needs to be said to hopefully save others from getting their hopes up. I really had anticipated the reviews were accurate but after visiting this place, I believe they either write their own reviews or standards are questionable. Going back to the neighborhood, I forgot to mention I noticed there was a good bit of what appeared to be recovery clients from the nearby addiction center hanging way too close to the school. It was heartbreaking to see one really frail man in a wheelchair looking lost a few other shady people wandering asking for money. The school is a great concept but needs a lot of work, new community and at least a professional greeter, more control over students and this school also seemed to lack diversity which might help I guess. I understand the need to cater to everyone but this was just really untamed in every sense. Baltimore finally has a legit barber school!! I've been looking for years and have checked out other barber schools in the area and I have always been disappointed. I can say with certainty I found a legit school and they offer Financial Aid which is the only school in baltimore I could find that offers financial aid for barbers. The guy who enrolled me was awesome, he answered every question I had and best of all he walked me through the Financial Aid step by step and made the process unbelievably easy. What really caught my eye was the teachers and the genuine excitement the students were having. I talked with some of the students and they all had nothing but good things to say. The school is huge and set up perfectly and it was very clean. You can tell the people here know what they're doing and they actually care.Alex Anderson

I started here at CCBC as Dundalk being my home campus in 2016. I was 27 at the time, admissions process was easy enough. Getting used to the login and whatnot and becoming accustomed to Blackboard was also pretty simple. I joined the Honors Society, even got on the committee for a while. Probably took classes every semester besides one ( including summer and winter). I had a 4.0 GPA all the way up until the end of the Fall 2018 semester where my GPA went down a few points. So here is it Spring 2019 and I had some major life stuff show up so I had to drop out of my classes for the semester, mind you I was suppose to graduate in June. So the school sends me a bill for $4,000 (money that was taken back cause I dropped the courses) and tells me it’s past due and it needs to be paid immediately. Not once did I receive a phone call from anyone telling me this was gonna happen. Not once did I receive a concerning phone call as to why a student with 10 credits left to graduate and 4.0 GPA decides to drop out completely. I called the school myself and guess what, the payment plan option has expired, although the notice I got was sent after the expiration date. I was basically told that’s not their problem. So for me and my 50 credits, we will be going somewhere else. Thanks CCBC for showing me it’s not about the student, it’s about the money. CCBC Dundalk GED program really does not support the mentally ill. Even those who try . They do not support those with ptsd or ODD especially those who are really trying to get ahead .It's really sad who and what we as human-beings had become ,cruel evil and rude also hurtful! I have 4 daughters. Three of which attended and graduated from universities, which I never experienced any problems with. My 18 year old is currently a student at CCBC-Essex, and I would NEVER recommend any parent who cares about their child's education to enroll them here. I am not very familiar with how smaller community colleges operate but I can say that I am experiencing the absolute worse service ever. After a long frustrating experience with Financial Assistance, I called thinking everything was finally in place. The woman I spoke with initially thought she was speaking with my daughter. As I asked questions she spoke in a very short and rude manner as if I was unintelligent. After being talked down to and hearing her say, "Well, we are not automatic mind readers" I asked her to calm down because she was actually speaking with the parent. As I attempted to get her name, she rudely hung up on me. I have never experience such behavior. Therefore, I will be filing a complaint.Andrea Freeman

Edit (08/30/2022): I am so sorry for the immaturity in my original review; I will be extra careful when posting reviews from now on. I was unaware my parents were the ones in charge of the schedule and had given me 3 hours. Also I realize that the Huntington program *did* help me with my first class of Trigonometry today! My classmates forgot about the Pythagorean Theorem and trig functions – so I helped them solve the problems! I’ve also realized that Huntington helped me improve in other aspects, besides Mathematics. For example, my handwriting significantly improved since I had to present everything nicely to my teachers. I also learned how to work with others and collaborate! While the three hours is admittedly drooling, it is certainly better than sitting at home and scrolling by mindless through Instagram! One more thing – now that I am studying and planning to retake my SAT this October – I am no longer upset over my past SAT scores. Test scores and grades should not be the sole determinant of one’s self-worth! TL;DR: Huntington is great, despite my initial complaints. I have changed my mind wholeheartedly. 10/10 Original comment: Teachers are nice, that’s for sure! My name is Candyce Jackson and I am a seventh grade student at GSA. This is my first year at GSA and I already am in love with it!! The teachers want to help you and they want you to succeed, they actually care about you and how your grades affect you. The best part about going to GSA is the merit and demerit system. This system is used when a child does good and when they do bad, for example, if you continue to talk after the teacher has asked you to stop, you will get a demerit and if you do something good you get a merit. I love how the staff handles every situation. I also LOVE our principal Ms. Lindsy, she takes care of you right away and she helps when it is needed. The new building is so beautiful I adore it! During class you are expected to complete certain skills related to being a CNA/GNA & the school sends you a couple supplies to use for your skills but they also expect you to go out and spend your own money to complete the skills. (Keep in mind they prefer you to be unemployed so what unemployed person wants to spend unnecessary money just for a mock test) then not to mention at the start of the program they don’t inform you how drawn out the wait is to take your exam to become a GNA due to the board of nursing being backed up. So your only expected to make about $13-$15 as A CNA until your testing date which is months away at the minimum . I found out that part from my instructor once I was already enrolled which who was not very pleasant of working with , she talks to students like we are her children & the administration at the program will defend this kind of behavior. I wanted to switch my classes because of it & they made that process even harder . I informed them on multiple occasions that I accepted employment again with a government agency & would not be able to complete morning classes & they still insisted on putting me in an morning classes after being informed multiple times that I could not attend .. the program is free if your going through a grant funder that’s the only good thing . If your paying out of pocket I personally suggest you go else where!Destiny Thomas

I “graduated” in April. I have yet to take my state test with the board of Nursing. Since I haven’t took my test, the job IT Works makes you go work for pays you terribly because they paid for your training, to do the same amount of work or MORE than those who get paid way more than you that are actually GNA’s. I also have yet to receive my certificate from the school stating i’m a CNA or valedictorian of my class. When you call IT Works for information of any sort they tell you you have to speak to this person and that person and it never gets anywhere. No one knows when you’ll take your test. They threaten you all during the programs introduction that they will withhold your license and call the board of nursing if you do X Y and Z but they do so many things wrong to us “students” which is why we are all quitting these jobs and why nursing homes are so poorly staffed. If I could give zero stars I would! Almost all of the staff is disrespectful. The teacher I had talks to you like you are her children, better yet I wouldn’t even talk to my children like that and the staff allows it and makes excuses for their behavior as if it is acceptable.They prefer you not to work and expect you to comply with their schedule and do not care about yours at all. I completed everything I needed to do for them to tell me I need to complete another week of clinicals because I passed but it was not to their satisfaction. They look for reasons to fail you or hold you back and it’s sad. I would not recommend this program to anyone because all you will have is problems. I believe they do it to try to get you to quit so you have to pay the money for the grant back.Jasmine Davis

It doesn't matter who you are, where you live, how old you are, where you work…or don't …there's a Continuing Education class that you can slip into your world. Whether you want to learn to drive a truck or drive a golf ball…there's a class for that!Mary Pless

Empty store front, no furniture or signage. I'm not a student there yet, but my school took us on a tour and I absolutely loved it. It also gave me the first opportunity to play on an actual grand piano, which was really awesome. I've been playing since last August, and I go to HCC now at least twice a week to practice there. And even if the recital rooms are locked, theres up to 6-8 practice rooms to the left of them (all 88 key weighted uprights w pedals). Would highly recommend 10/10. For Bel Air pianists who are looking for a grand to practice on this is a great place. They're open every day and no one will bother you when you're there playing unless you're in the recital room lol. The recitals are usually closed during weekends, so weekdays anytime before 7pm is best, since that's when students start their classes.Adrian Shavuo

I had a great time learning while attending this diverse Community College. The professors / teachers and College care that you grasp the concept of what you are being taught. HCC even has a free tutoring Center. They can even arrange for a personal tutor that they pay for if you need help! the only thing I didn't like was that the books were heavy 😝Paula Campbell

This review Is specific to the non-credit courses. HCC needs to improve their process for notifying students/registered persons when canceling a seminar or class. The school has your contact information. There is no reason an email could not be sent out for cancelation. I drive 30 minutes to find a note on the door.Patrick Rogers

Honestly, I enjoyed my time. My biggest grievance was that the Disability Support Services didn't specifically target any particular disability. They offered "support" that was not particularly useful for my mathematical disability. Besides that, I met so many great professors who were inspirations for me. The events available to participate in were fun too. I liked Visiting Rep Stage up until that Joseph Ritsch said something offensive to me. Besides that, I felt that Howard Community College provided me with an opportunity to meet new people, enjoy great food, and I guess expand my horizons. Despite the many personal struggles I faced at this community college, I am glad that some professors were understanding and actually took the time to explain things thoroughly to me so that I would not fail. Overall, HCC is a good place to begin ones journey towards a higher education!Nigel Young

Not your average community college, it feels like it could be a private university if they added some dorms and I love the architecture, its very modern. I love it here all of my professors have been great. Just beware of the math department, my experience with math at this school has been a little rocky, I've only had a couple of good professors out of all the classes that I've taken.James Williams

This is an excellent college, in which professors really know how to teach and to relate to students. Most students will transfer to four-year colleges and so will save a lot of money. I have talked with university professors. They have a great deal of respect for Howard CC. One especially noted the excellence in advising students.Mike ODonnell
