14 Best Emt Programs In New Haven, CT (2022 Updated)

This place is a perfect example of “you get what you pay for”. I attended September 2009 – May 2018 (with a 3 year gap from 2012-2015). The hospitality teachers and department head were wonderful, and a lot of my general Ed teachers were amazing too and I have nothing but great things to say about the teachers. However, the registrar office and academic advisors were a nightmare to deal with. No one ever smiles, my message NEVER got relayed to the right person, and it was such a headache to deal with offices equivalent to dealing with the DMV. They also claimed that when you graduate you can transfer your credits to a state college which is false. Some of the credits transferred, but classes like Math don’t transfer and I have to take a placement test to get into the same exact math class I took at Gateway and passed the class with an A. The bookstore staff was the most incapable, rude, useless group of people. Graduation was a completely unorganized joke – they told graduates to arrive 2 hours early to stand in a parking lot with no instruction and 1 porta potty for about 300 people. They also only announce 1 of your degrees – so if you have 3 degrees they won’t even take the extra 5 seconds to announce all 3 (I thought graduation was supposed to recognize your achievements?) I would have never wasted my time going to graduation if I knew how pathetic it would be. Parking on campus in New Haven was crazy and the lot constantly overflows into the Temple Street lot so you get to walk in stairways that smell like urine with bums roaming the lot and drunk people stumbling to their car after your class at 9:30 at night with no security guards to get to your car. Literally no security whatsoever like your completely on your own in a public lot in the heart of New Haven. Like most schools, they don’t allow weapons inside the building so you don’t even have a way to defend yourself if you get approached in the lot which will happen at some point. There were also hospitality classes that I had to buy things out of pocket and was promised reimbursement that never happened.Nina Tiso

I loved working with the children in the Early Learning Center, but the adults in the classroom didn't really treat me that well. They didn't really accommodating me that well when it came to tasks such as setting the table for breakfast,lunch, and snack. A coworker got nasty because I wasnt moving fast enough for her. I'm visually impaired and I have to take my time because of my vision. I had to complain about this coworker 2 times. Another thing that didnt make sense was I had to walk to the other side of campus to eat lunch for my 30 minute break. The teacher of the classroom would get mad at me for being late because I am a slow eater and I cant move fast again because of my bad vision. student teachers aren't allowed to eat in the teachers lounge. I shouldn't have had to complain to my boss about eating in the teacher lounge. This place needs to be more accommodating to student teachers with disabilities and staff needs to be more compassionate. I am very glad that I don't work at this place anymore! Beautiful atmosphere. I was in their old building on Long wharf years ago, and seeing how they've grown and progressed into what I consider a university now, is life changing for the people attending this college. For a community college, they offer so much for the students with assistance as well as their educational endeavors. Their cafe offers delicious varieties which includes a wide range of healthy choices. Very inviting environment for the students to learn in. I went here for my first two years of college. Here's what I've noticed. – The people here are great, for the most part. – UNH emphasizes on a welcoming environment – There's always new development like the Bergami center which is a very nice looking building. – I lived in Westside and Winchester halls. Both are good! – I was in Engineering which I struggled in, but when I changed my major to accounting I had no struggle. – I just really wish UNH was more helpful with finance and mental health. – They were WAY too strict with Covid. Yes, I understand the dangers, but we're adults you have to remember. They threatened to suspend if you violate rules, even accidentally. They also quarantined my entire hall in 2020 just because one student got covid. I really didn't believe they had to be that harsh. – They were also TERRIBLE with communication when moving in for my 2nd year (because of covid), and I had to spend a month trying to figure out when to move in. – The Accessibility resources center is a good place, but once they forbid me from using a calculator on a chemistry exam in March of 2020. Everybody but the ARC staff thought that was terrible. – Their math department was terrible. The professors meant well, but it was not taught in an interesting way. – On a positive note, they are fantastic at safety. In January of 2021 I got cyberbullied by someone in the school who made threats including a death threat. The ResLife dept. handled it very well and the police took it very seriously and found the guy doing it, someone who I thought was a friend. He was suspended. Overall, UNH is not perfect, but their heart is in the right place. I didn't leave for any of these reasons listed, that's another story entirely. I attended UNH between spring 2019 and January 2021 (two years) as a transfer, and earned a Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice (Investigative Services Concentration). I am giving this school 3 stars because excluding a very good academic experience, there were too many low moments I experienced at UNH for me to give this review more stars. These low moments range from lack of opportunities for commuter students (which is what I was for 3/4 semesters), existing social circles that prevent prospective students from feeling any sense of belonging, the school's fostering and promotion of the word "LatinX", and other things. (Mainly because I am a Latino/Hispanic male originally from South America, and don't see how the word is applicable to the Central/South American community). The pandemic did affect the college experience in spring 2020, but my experience was already going downhill well before this. For these reasons, I feel as though this was an era of my life that never happened. Above all, I find it difficult to talk about this era and school in more positive (than negative) ways. I do recommend this school for my degree. My professors did an excellent job of teaching me. But it all does come at a cost because setbacks or letdowns (described above) can quickly affect a student's experience. Likewise, I am considering graduate school here because my professional job search opened my eyes to how graduate degrees are becoming the new standard for the U.S workforce. The beauty of this school is not just about the academic excellence and great facilities, but the diversity; it’s almost as if every nationality is represented here. Everyone is friendly from the students to the academic staffers, non-academic staffers, to the school security operatives. When I visited this school I observed wheelchair accessibility is greatly adhered to in this institution. I also noticed there’s a 24/7 Wells Fargo Bank ATM point on this campus. Consequently, you will always have access to cash. When you school here you also get to enjoy the magnificence of New Haven, West Haven and most of all New York City, since it’s just less than an hour ride with your car or via the Metro-North Train. I did my BLS skills session with them and I must say, the way they planned out the session while maintaining COVID precautions was great! How it goes: -You call ahead and they provide you with a code to enter their facility and you're the only person there. The call is a little echoey, fyi! -Once you walk in, there's just a TV screen facing you with your instructor on a video call. -The CPR mannequins are on a cart in front of you, connected to a computer program. Your instructor controls the computer for you and the system they use is very intuitive and efficient! It tells you if you're pushing too hard, too deep or administering air too quickly or forcefully. Once you finish each skill, it gives you an immediate score which to me is very helpful. If you don't do a skill well enough, your score will be low, but your instructor will walk you through what you should do better and you will be able to do the skill again. -Once you are finished, you clean all of the equipment then leave. The entire process is very calming and much less intimidating than a classroom setting.Lívia Quaglia

I love the set up, you walk in and have a room to yourself to go over skills with an instructor who is on video conferencing. The screen is big so you can see the instructor well. The mannequins are connected to a computer so they provide real time feedback on your compressions and breaths. My instructor was extremely knowledgeable, took time to go over areas I was less confident in, and helped me to feel confident and comfortable with the skills required of the certification. Let me start by saying that I was INCREDIBLY nervous entering the BLS skills session, as I have no prior experience in healthcare. I needed the BLS certification for my upcoming school year. My instructor, Sean, made me feel at ease immediately. The skills course offers excellent feedback as you work your way through the program. It was quick and very informative. Excellent experience every time! This is my second time re-certifying with Code One and it's always a very smooth experience. The online portion is great, and most of all the instructors are very knowledgeable. I had Dr. Santina as my skills instructor this time around for both BLS and ACLS. She was very articulate, encouraging, and knowledgeable about everything she was teaching me, and even taught me something I didn't know about the cons of using atropine for bradycardia! This is a great program with phenomenal instructors. If you’re thinking of taking an EMT class I would definitely recommend. My main instructor was Brian who had interesting, but also very informative classes, and would make sure that everyone knew what we were learning. The setup is very convenient and it’s done well especially with COVID precautions. The process of certification was very straight forward with the practice dummies and the virtual call. I had Jonathan as the person certifying me, and he was fantastic! He answered any questions that came up and gave good advice for real-world scenarios. Mediocre staff, but the course was exhausting and very boring. When you start the program you get to meet the owner for the first day, and pretty much after that he is gone or in his office for an hour or two. That will most likely be the only time you'll ever see him. The instructor was also dull, with a slight dark humor. Sitting in one place for 8 hours long hearing someone talk with a monotone voice and with no fun explanations or examples was not gratifying. During the program two fellow classmates dropped the course. I am not sure for what exact reasons but that must mean something. Overall wasn't the best experience and I felt unprepared for the final test. Near the end of the course you'll have to take the computerized test amongst completing six medical stations which include your medical assessment, trauma assessment, airway, cardiac arrest management, and etc you get the point. After successful completion you'll have to do the six stations again with state officials. After that you'll have to take the NREMT exam which is a national exam. This test is much harder then the first. I feel that this program did not prepare me very well for these tests. Considering you have to pay $1500 including the book and your stethoscope. Maybe there is a better place for your EMT endeavors. In other words maybe because being an EMT wasn't for me.Daniel

I decided to take the 4 week online, on-demand course because it was the only fast paced online course near me. I found the instructors and staff to be knowledgeable and personable. They were also flexible. I live 100 miles away from the school and they were able to work with me to make clinical time and ride along time work. I think this type of course works well if you have the time to dedicate to the coursework. I was able to pass the national registry written exam with very little trouble. I would recommend this course to anyone who is interested in a rapid sequence course and has the time to dedicate to completing the course.John Paul Horn

Awesome experience. Top notch. I completed the 4 week online EMT course right in the midst of the pandemic – ALL of the staff were wonderful and I always felt safe during in-person skills classes. They truly teach the material for you to learn it instead of just regurgitate it at test time. (That being said, they’re also great at teaching you EXACTLY what you need to do to be successful in the state practical). This institute has flexible class times to work with almost anyone’s schedule. It also has an amazing staff and instructors who seek to ensure you completely understand both the curriculum and lab skills. I took the phlebotomy program, and I have zero complaints. Monica is amazing; She labors closely with you, so you have a solid comprehension of the steps, techniques and procedures to execute a successful venipuncture for each patient. You have plenty of hands-on time as well in the lab with your classmates and volunteers, which will give you the competency necessary to work in a medical setting. By far the worst school I have ever gone to. They train you enough to pass the national registry but not enough to ever find a job in the different fields. The EMT instructor is sexist and rude, doesn’t help students learn, and isn’t understanding to the needs of students. The director is sarcastic and the company in general is only in it for the money. Not a single person that I know who has taken phlebotomy or EKG has ever found a job due to requirements in the area. When asked for more training they ignore you and tell you that you need to pay even more money for the extra training.Chris Attakk

The phlebotomy program through American Professional Educational Services was phenomenal. The classroom information was presented professionally and accurately without any gaps in content. The instructor was incredibly knowledgeable and relatable. Ample lab time was provided for maximum hands-on skills learning. I was more than prepared for the national exam and was able to secure a job in the phlebotomy field without a delay. I highly recommend APES programs and certification classes.Debra Gosselin

Even though I don’t go to Yale and am not a medical student, I am concerned about one of the faculty members that is teaching at Yale School of Medicine, Thomas Kimberly. He is (or at least was) a Lecturer in Emergency Medicine there, and the reason that concerns me is because back when he practiced medicine, when I was a patient at Yale New Haven Hospital's ER with clear signs of heart failure, Thomas Kimberly (who was an APRN at the time and was treating me) didn't order the proper diagnostic tests for someone with heart failure symptoms. My diagnosis was missed (because of his mistake) and I was admitted "for observation." A few days later in the hospital, once my heart condition was discovered, one of the doctors told me that "a mistake has been made, my condition was overlooked." The doctor (who informed me that a mistake had been made) told me that if the person who saw me in the ER (Thomas Kimberly) ordered the proper diagnostic tests, my heart condition would have been found/diagnosed immediately, and I would have been prescribed the heart medications I needed right away… rather than a few days later. So, I gave my medical records to a lawyer, and he had other doctors look at it. They came to the same conclusion… that not ordering the proper diagnostic tests delayed my condition from being discovered, resulting in me not receiving the heart medications I needed until later. If Thomas Kimberly is still teaching there, or anywhere for that matter, hopefully he teaches his students that when a patient has clear symptoms of heart failure, make sure to order the proper diagnostic tests for someone with heart failure symptoms, rather than mess up (like he did) by not doing so.Connor Etter

They allow their Assistant Professor of Pasychiatry (BandyLee) to use her political biases as a call for the emergency detention of a president for evaluation. She should be terminated and the school boycotted for employing this type of person. This school cannot be trusted to educate people in a non-partisan, responsible manner.Laura Lamb

New Britain EMS Academy is by far the BEST EMT training around. I attended for 3 months in the evening class. The instructors are all amazing! To name a few…Jason, Tom, Mark, Uncle Bill, Emily, David and Rich! They are experienced, professional, caring and tough because they want YOU to pass this course and the NREMT. Waste of $1200 and a month and a half of my life! First 4 hrs of the class were lectures, which were basically a review of the book we are given, the grading system i feel does not ensure knowledge & capabilities in the field, i was failed without warning. The one on ones is where most of the knowledge is learnt & was conducted very well, unfortunately it had no impact on the determination of wether or not you will pass or fail the class.Kayron Macon

After taking BLS class i was told that i will get e card by e mail within a week , but after waiting almost 3 weeks, and calling several times , had to go twice in the office to get the e card. the office lady (Annunziata) was so rude and lazy and each time i called in she said she will send it out today but she never did. so disappointed. will not take classes here in the future.RY Ch

This place has top notch instructors who are mostly EMS-I. They have Paramedics and EMTs with at least 5 years of experience. They run state practicals all the time and their instructors that teach lectures are diverse, most with career experience working as a Paramedic or EMT for a paid job and echo hose ambulance as a volunteer job. They have been publicized and have a large firehouse on Meadow street that has over 7 ambulances and I saw at least 5 little road car suvs with the echo placards on them. This volunteer service does a great job and committs to many functions volunteering their time without pay to help their community. I have seen them at shelton day, the harvest house, men who cook, walmart donations and food drives. This is an exceptional community of people who sacrifice their time. Their assistant chief and Chief of Service are also volunteers. Sources say they make a small stipend but it amounts to less than 12 hours per month at about 1.89 an hour. These people put in about 12 -50 hours per month for regular volunteers and around 80 to 100 hours a month for the Chief and Assistant cheif each while balancing another paid job for living purposes which both are career. The chief is a career Paramedic Supervisor in another commercial service and the Assistant Chief is a career EMT- intervenous or AEMT. Great bunch of people.
