20 Best Dental Assistant Programs In Des Moines, IA (2022 Updated)

I have had such a bipolar relationship with Indian Hills that I don't know where to even start. Good/Positive: Campus greenery is beautiful, Friendly and normally Understanding Teachers, "The Pit" as a social gathering place, Spent most of my time there,The Arts and Drama Department, Easy to Apply, Good Medical/Counseling. Bad/Negative: Living expenses are outrageous, especially for a small college that has not much for variety and choices. Food never changes and I barely ate there, so it was a waste of money for me. My dorm in Trustee was fine, nothing special but I was happy with the space. However I went through 3 different roommates prior to starting and after the first month my other was offered a better living space. The OneStop has often been portrayed as rude. Not only with my own experiences, but with other students as well. I am a friendly, nice, but cautious student. I am going to have QUESTIONS. I do not appreciate being talked down to. I am a first generation traditional student in my family, so a lot of the information isn't common knowledge for me. I understand a bad and busy day, but this happened on several occasions for several different type of questions/concerns. Now, Dropped Classes. I was a very ambitious student, so I got my AA done in one year. However, a class that was needed was apparently dropped. I was not notified about it until I asked the OneStop. They said I should have received an email, which I didn't. This class was suppose to be a simple science class since I am nothing close to a scientist, but I needed the credit. With one day prior to beginning of term, I had to shuffle through what was remaining since I was never notified in time. I was left with a horribly difficult class, ONLINE. Passed with a C, but hated every moment of it. There were other class situations I had with them, but this was the biggest deal to me.Luckily for me, I was involved with the arts department and had some very good teachers. I am not knocking the academics, just the people who are suppose to help and guide you to them. I have been disappointed several times and for following friends thinking about going to hills I warn them of all of this. I often say, "Stay at home or off campus if possible, save yourself the money. Worry about your classes and good luck asking for help. The teachers will be there for you, but I don't know about the rest of the institution."This college is probably excellent for students in the technology center and nursing, however for a future transfer student or gen eds, there is no guarantee that this college is for you.Caitlyn Millard

The presence of a college in a community is always a good one, with the purpose of educating and building the community. The newly elected president at Indian Hills is a good leader with good intentions. The leadership team however, is corrupt. As a result, staff members are subjected to mistreatment and unfair behavior and practices. Promotions are given based on personal preference, how well you are liked by those with the ability to make changes, and who you know. Team effort and support is also lacking when assigned duties need to be accomplished, which requires contribution from other staff members across campus. This is not reflective of all staff members however, as there are a few that do more than their fair share and are willing to work. The resouces and education available to students are comparable to other colleges in the area. After talking to community members, I have learned that the reputation of the college is not the best. Good leadership sets the foundation for a good business. Since this is lacking at Indian Hills, the college will not be able to maintain a positive image in and around the community, until and unless changes are made within the leadership team.Cherece Henry

This place is horrible. The dorms have cockroaches, a really bad infestation of cockroaches!! They have outdated elevators that should have been replaced years ago, they are just now replacing one of them. They would get stuck, open with no elevator in which someone could have been severely injured, one even caught on fire. Then now two of which I have seen of the washing machines are broken so some of us cannot do our laundry. The bathrooms are rather filthy. The parking lots need repairs badly. I have been treated poorly by numerous people including a professor who forced me and a friend to drop out of her class. That professor also called my friend a distraction because he is bisexual. The food in the cafeteria isn't the best. I honestly find this place a waste of time and money. It's not even worthy of being called a college.Ady Webb

Nice buildings, TERRIBLE instructors, especially in their medical-focused science programs. Instructors changing assignments, deleting submitted work, and failing entire sections of classes.. Instructors that play the "gotcha" game, attempting to fail and trick you on material and assignments, as opposed to trying to teach. Have professors ripping material directly from other programs and having you do it for assignments (other universities) that still has other universities logos all over it. Also, you're on your own, admin will not respond / is not on your side. I would spend my money and time elsewhere if AT ALL possible. Had an instructor claim they have the "best program in the state" and then fail to respond by email for about 3 months, and had to get Dean involved. Feels like I'm interacting with high school students for professors. I am from out of state and it turns out Iowa has basically no resources regarding escalating issues with professors – what they say goes and that's it, regardless of how inappropriate or unproductive. DO NOT trust your education to this program and these instructors.Rone Parent

Kirkwood is a fantastic school with high level talent. The college seems to view itself as a service to paying customers (a bafflingly rare delight), and offers courses that inspire good work and deep thinking. Kirkwood *far* exceeds any other educational institution I've attended. The admission process is transparent, the courses you're paying for are clearly outlined, the requirements of the course are made plain at the start of the term… man. I can't say enough nice things. And you know what? I never once had anyone correct me to say "Call me 'Doctor' ". That may not mean much to you, but it meant a hell of a lot to me. Do yourself a favor and go here for your first two years with an eye to transfer on, should that be your aim. You're not just getting more for your money. You're flat out getting more.Claiming Light

Least understanding faculty. Called 6 hours after my deadline to cancel a test that I paid $95 dollars to take. The program director for CE was rude and condescending stating that she would not refund my exam because I was simply 6 hours past the 24 hour deadline. This school is clearly just out to rob people of their money and it’s sickening. I’ve had nothing but a bad experience and it’s crazy to me because at one point I was so excited to attend. I was charged 600 dollars because they weren't able to post the required material for for a class, until the day before the class was suppose to start. When talking to them on the phone, it was like I was talking to a incoherent baboon, one second they say I'm talking to the wrong office. Asked to get transferred to the right office, then hear them say this is the right office. If you have a stereotype of an illiterate Iowans, then this place fits it like a glove. Don't waste your time, go to a real community college, not some redheaded step child who's parents are inbred framers. Can't emphasis how bad the administration is.Steven Bell

I have traveled 426 miles round trip for all of my ortho work over a two year+ period of time. That's a pretty strong commitment. The patient care and each appointment was handled perfectly. Each member of the team ensured that I felt welcomed, comfortable, informed and taken care of. Adult orthodontia is not an easy undertaking, and I really had no idea what I was getting into. The entire team made the experience very positive. I truly looked forward to each visit. The quality of the work done, in my opinion, was top notch. My ortho visits were coordinated with two of the dentists, Dr. Southard for all ortho work, and Dr. Vargas for all other work. They partnered together for a wholistic solution. Since I traveled such a great distance, they ensured that my appointments were timed so I saw both dentists at the same time. They consulted between my visits to ensure that progress was in line with what they expected. I highly recommend their services. Update – forgot to include that their pricing is very reasonable. I had coverage from two different insurance companies over the course of my treatment, and their office was very easy to work with. I received filling here, I had been feeling bad about the tooth everyday after the filling, then the tooth died. However, the customer representative lady insisted saying it’s not related to the service and rejected to pay for the cost. She only offered me free extraction, and I was even charged of the dead tooth evaluation. The dentist wasn’t even actively reaching out back to me, I felt like just discarded like trash. And I went to endodontist since I didn’t trust the college of dentistry anymore, then I was charged $300 more. I want to talk to the top manger about it. Why nobody cares about student’s benefits? Is it okay to transfer all the risk to students? And is it okay to tell students “this happens, you just need to move on”?Xinyu Tu

I had a really good experience with the oral surgeon during my consult, but less than 24 hours before my surgery, I received an email that I needed to pay $900. There was no due date or any other information about the bill, so I called the billing office and spoke with someone about when it needed to be paid and asked if insurance was going to cover any of it. I was quite upset, so I made a concerted effort to remain calm when I called the billing office, but the woman I spoke to was so rude that I hung up. I ended up having to cancel my appointment because I am a student and I cannot pay a thousand dollars with less than 24 hours' notice.Jaeda Wilson

Actual dentist was pretty straight forward seemed busy. The woman who cleaned my baby girls teeth and did r rays was awesome! Super sweet and guided my 4 year old along every step made sure she was comfortable and knew exactly what was happening at every moment also was very engaging and made my baby apart of everything! Great experience. We have three young kids, so going to appointments all together can be stressful. This dentist has tablets for kids to play on while they wait, and both times we’ve gone, they have gotten all three of our kids in at the same time. All three of our kids go to Des Moines Pediatric Dentistry and they LOVE it (and I do, too)! We've had multiple rounds of cleanings, one cavity, and one tooth removed between the three of them and they still love to go! I was in a head on car accident in September 2020. I have injuries with my back, neck, shoulders and basically my entire body still hurts and I have chronic pain. I started coming to Capital Chiropractic in December 2021. After just a few visits with Corrine my back and neck are starting to feel better. My headaches are no longer every single day but once or twice a week. When I do my excersices it does help relieve the pain. To tell you the truth, I was a bit skeptical about the initial simple exercises Sarah prescribed for my neck, shoulder and back pain. But after 3 weeks of intense pain that wouldn't subside, I was willing to give anything a shot. Within a few days of doing these exercises (I can't even call them exercises, they're so easy and not time consuming!), the pain was almost completely gone. Best of all, she listens and adjusts based on what my body is telling us. She treats me as an intelligent adult, explaining what she's doing and what she recommends and why. Thee best chiropractic care I've received in years! I was referred by a coworker d/t back, arm and chest pain. Went through so many tests to find out it was in fact, a musculoskeletal issue, so I went and seen Dr. LoRang and he has been so knowledgeable, helpful and most of all kind. I’ve been to see Dr. Quick and his staff a handful of times now and each experience has been great! Specifically, how thorough they are with your first appt, the time and care they take, how they adjust their schedule within reason to make room for dental issues that may get worse, if not taken care of quickly. The bag of goodies they give you for being a new patient was phenomenal! Electric toothbrush, full bottle of mouth wash, floss and goodies for your oral health. I’d recommend them to anyone wanting a caring, friendly dentist that will not let you leave there without knowing all that should be cared for. Dr Quick and his whole staff are amazing. I have a massive dentist phobia & they not only made me feel comfortable but they used a numbing medicine that made novicane shots almost painless. Being new to the area and having so many dentists it is hard to know what to expect, but these guys were wonderful! They made everything comfortable and easy from the scheduling to the exam to the cleaning. They were all so nice and cheerful. I went to Northpark Dental for a checkup and in need of restoration work. My checkup went fine and we scheduled an extraction for only a few days later, which I was very grateful for. Dr. Trung and the staff were kind, patient and made sure I was comfortable every step of the way. The extraction went well and I have had no unexpected complications. However, I was in a great deal of pain for the first 36 hours after the procedure. I have had gastric bypass surgery and because of this, I can’t take NSAIDS as pain relievers. I let the staff know this at both appointments. I was advised to take Tylenol for the pain. Today when Dr. Trung followed up with me to see how I was, he advised that he was unable to prescribe opiates, but offered to prescribe something to help with the swelling, which would in turn likely help with the pain. I’ll keep this in mind for next time I’m in for work so I can ask for them. I plan on taking my kids here for checkups – the care I’ve received has been great. I hadn't been to the dentist in a few years so I was rather nervous about the work I may need done. Dr. Trung and his staff made me feel so comfortable and identified with clear explanations on the plan to get my teeth back to good health. I've had a couple of cavities filled and even had a tooth that need some emergency attention and they were able to get me right in. I have had the pleasure of seeing both Dr. Babor and Dr. Phan. This office has to be the most personable office I have ever been to, starting with the front desk when you walk in the door. I was unable schedule an appointment for several years with Advanced Family Dentistry, but upon my return it seemed like it was a very short time as the staff was welcoming and anxious to reestablish the concern for my dental mouth health. The wait time was minimal from the time I arrived and when the hygienist escorted me to her work area. She was truly concerned and was anxious to up date and improve my dental care and insure my were healthy or required additional attention. When doctor entered the room she reviewed what the hygienist had found and discussed with me any concerns I had. I needed an appointment for a really bad (and painful) tooth, so I had sent a message to Jones Family Dental. They told that they could get me in the same week. One of the appointments they offered was already booked but Dr Jones personally texted me and said they could get me in at a diff time. I accepted. The minute I walked in the door of the office, I knew this is where I was suppose to be. The front desk receptionist was super welcoming and treated me like part of the family already, the dental assistant was calm and listened to my anxious concerns (and also has good music!). Dr Jones was very considerate of my pain and explained everything step by step. We got started right away in getting my tooth taken care of. I've had not so good experiences in the past with a couple dentists and was hesitant to be seen but knew I needed to save my tooth and to stop suffering in pain. Dr. Jones' assistant, Ceci made me feel very comfortable and seemed very knowledgable. Dr. Jones was amazing- that guy knows his stuff. I had a lot of radiation in my head and neck several years ago and have special needs when it comes to dentistry. He knew it all. I needed extensive work because I hate going to the dentist! Excellent place. Dr. Jones did my 4 wisdom tooth extractions and they went great. Everyone does a great job and are very friendly, patient and understanding. This was my first visit to Pleasant Dental, The staff was very nice and made me fell at ease which isn’t always the case at the dentist. I had my teeth cleaned by Kylie, it was the best cleaning I have ever had, it went quite quickly, smoothly and best of all painlessly! Kylie let you know what she was doing the entire visit and kept a conversation going ( as much as you can while having your teeth cleaned anyway) throughout my appointment. Another key thing I liked is that I only wanted a cleaning …I did not want x rays and all the other added jazz I have had to do previously.. I said I only wanted a cleaning and wasn’t pressured into anything else. We have been patients here since before Dr. Kent Brady retired. This was one of the rare offices that was in network with our insurance AND had great reviews with a nice office and staff. Unfortunately, we ended up leaving the practice awhile ago for a few reasons. Dr. Lysne is nice but missed a very obvious pocket of infection on my husbands old root canal and only noticed it after I pointed it out to him on the film. Mistakes happen but that really made us uneasy because I am no professional and he was given another chance to notice it by me asking, "Are you sure everything looks okay on there?" It was only after I got up to point out the spot that he admitted he made a mistake and missed it. But what was really unacceptable to us was how the doc/office handled our daughters need for a filling. We had it in our file for years that our family only gets white composite fillings, not silver (mainly because of our health concerns with mercury and potential vapors being released). When I went up to make her appt for the filling, they advised me for the first time that because of our insurance, they would only place silver amalgam unless I wanted to pay out of pocket for the white. They said our insurance only covers silver. I went home and called her insurance directly and they said no, they cover white fillings and offered to give me that benefit coverage in writing. Went back to Brady Dental and gave them this info and it was then that the truth came out, the insurance does cover white but because the reimbursement rate is so low they have chosen to only do silver unless the patient wants to pay out of pocket for white. That just felt wrong. It felt like discrimination and a way to double dip by using up insurance benefits for all the easy coverage stuff like exams, x-rays and cleanings but then embarrass patients into paying out of pocket for things like white fillings when it's already a covered benefit under the insurance! I found out later that other dental offices handle this situation differently, they know the reimbursement rate is low but still place the white and carry on, maybe taking a loss or cutting even but understanding the overall bigger picture of keeping the dentist-patient relationship and with their ongoing dental care needs they know they are still going to make money, they just limit the amount of patients they take on I guess. The way I see it is when Brady Dental applied and got approved with the insurance company, they agreed to their terms and rates. It was our right to receive the covered benefit and have the white placed, not for them to dictate the material they wanted to use that better aligned with them financially at the expense of my daughters health, otherwise the right thing to do is if you as an office don't agree with the reimbursement rates or you feel your office is suffering financially by accepting these patients or this insurance, then by all means you should just stop accepting it and advise your patients of this in advance so there are no hard feelings. **My Reply to Brady Dental's response below: What are you talking about – Medicaid? You are clearly confusing us with another family, that isn't even our insurance carrier! I asked for an appointment. They asked what kind of insurance I had. I told them and they asked what I need seen for. I explained about my issue. Then they asked where I worked and as soon as I told them they said someone was out sick and the other person was booked up. They told me to go some place else or call emergency dental. I told her I was looking for a fulltime dentist. I was not offered an appointment at all, that was all I wanted. I feel like she was rude to me on the phone. I'm sorry you were sick, I would have gladly wait but this option was not offered to me. I worked in a medical clinic and would have been fired if I told a patient to go somewhere else. I found a different dentist who went out of their way to help me set up an appointment in a few weeks. They were super pleasant, what a difference!Mary Briggs

I have been going to Brady Dental Care since I was 4 years old, first to Dr. Kent and now to his son, Dr. Corbin, whom my entire family sees, along with Dr. Lysne on occasion. They are truly the kindest and most compassionate people. Their entire staff is wonderful and they all do a great job of making people feel comfortable and heard. What can I say . My son 6 years old jumped off his bed half way knocked out his two front teeth. After hysterically leaving Blank Children’s finding a pediatric emergency dentist was no easy task. Can I say I will always refer friends and family to this place. How awesome that these two ladies took care of my baby and he was so comfortable and not in any pain. Dentist and dental assistants are very pleasant and my kids love it. The problem is with the receptionists who I met this day. I felt they handled me as if I am stupid and cannot make a decision for my child when I tried to decline x-ray. There is a difference between educating and pushing and I definitely felt pushed to accept the x-ray.Lucy Nyamu

The staff are so friendly and the facility is spotless! My daughter had to have two teeth pulled and didn't even shed a tear. Process was very quick/painless and she loved being able to pick a prize at the end. I can’t say enough how wonderful everyone in this office. It’s embarrassing to admit how long it’s been since I’ve been to a dentist. I picked dental associates, and it was a wonderful choice. They did not make me feel bad about how long it’s been but welcomed me and made me feel comfortable. They explained everything and took their time. Dr. Shaw is approachable and kind. I have to admit I had to come back for some fillings and they were nothing short of great. The dentist, Dr. Shaw, is very good, kind, and thorough. Asking questions to make sure that you get the best service and treatment possible. The dental hygienist assistant's are also nice and kind as well, and make you feel very comfortable and relaxed. My family opted for Dental Associates as our Dental provider after our previous provider stopped taking our insurance. Dental Associates has been wonderful. I have not been to the dentist in longer than I’d like to admit so I was more nervous than usual about going back. My old dentist wasn’t taking new appts. and several other suggested places weren’t taking new clients. If you are in that place or looking for a switch I would really suggest trying this group. Everyone from the receptionist to the techs, to the dentist and the folks that review financial information were so incredibly kind. I felt that they took their time to make sure they understood my situation and my needs and went above and beyond to ensure I was comfortable. Guess what my quote was at the second dental clinic – $28k! For same fixed “all in 4” with more affordable acrylic option! Plaza Dental is very overpriced! My visit felt like a waste of time. I had an amazing experience at Plaza Dental! Sara my dental hygienist made it even spectacular. I felt comfortable around her. She was very personable and professional. She took the time to explain the whole process and very thorough with the whole process of taking X-ray and cleaning my teeth. I was extremely worried about going to another dentist after a really bad experience I have had before. As soon as I arrived at Des Moines River Dental Care in Carlisle I was greeted by an amazing staff. When I entered the room I had a great experience with the Dental Hygienist who assured me that I would be in good hands and would have a great plan in place for me by the time I left. After seeing Dr. Tyler Villiard I was feeling great after my experience and he was down to earth and kind about my situation and made me feel comfortable there. I would like to recommend this dental practice for its outstanding service on all levels. Dr. Villiard and his staff are absolutely wonderful. The environment is relaxing yet still professional. In fact they even have T.V.s on the ceiling if you want to watch while they are taking care of you! They are honest and up front about all procedures and pricing.
