20 Best Acting Programs In St. Louis, MO (2022 Updated)

Talked to an advisor 3 different times. The first time was a short call had no idea what was going on, okay whatever. Said he would figure things out and scheduled another appointment. Second call his man concern was me attending the webinar and informed me I could only take 2 classes for the first term and a total of 15 credits for the semester. News to me but okay if that's how its gotta be; okay, asked him with less than a month before classes why am I not in any classes yet? He said he would figure it out and get the ball rolling and made another appointment for August 12 to be sure everything was figured out. Third appointment still no classes, and no call. Talked to a different advisor and she told me he would call me back. Finally got from my advisor on the phone 2 hours after appointment where he began with saying I could only take 12 credit hours this semester till I got a gpa for maryville. Towards the end it was now only 9 credit hours for the 1st semester. What! Jack said depending on my gpa this semester I may be able to take 18 next semester. Really? Like I could even remotely believe that after switching 3 times. Bye Maryville! Thanks for leaving me 2 weeks to find a different college to go to! The online master degree in nursing has group work for every single class and almost every week. That doesn't seem so bad until you realizes that there are students all over the country in different time zones working 12 hrs shift. It is difficult to get everyone together on the same day and time, not mentioning the huge impact it has on your grades. So your grade is going to depend on everyone else. That for me destroys the Independence of online school that most working adults are looking for. Not mentioning all the drama that involves group work. The semester costs around $5,500, and I think that is too much money to have your grades jeopardize by inconvenient and excessive group work.Katia Nicholaw

If the admission representative I spoke to today is a reflection of what to expect from Maryville University, I would suggest you look elsewhere. I requested information so I can determine the best path to a graduate degree. I was mocked, scoffed and laughed at by the representative. I tried to explain my purpose, and she continued to talk over me. The worse demeaning attitude I've encountered in ages. Everyone at Forest Park Dental School is wonderful to me. They are punctual with the start time of appointments. Since they are a school, they're always learning new techniques and using up to date technology and pass on their knowledge to me. They always encourage me to take care of my teeth and show me better ways to care for my teeth. I have such a great time going there. They take Mohealthnet Medicaid, so there's no charge. I get X-rays and cleanings. They always do their best from the managers, the teachers, the dentists, and the students. I highly recommend them. They are safe, clean, creative, and careful during the Coronavirus. Because of the Coronavirus they use tools that don't cause splash. They truly care. If you have a problem they can't help you with they refer you to Affinia Dental School. I'm grateful for their handicapped parking in front of the building.Jean Montgomery

If you want to be successful just go somewhere else. The professors do not teach in a way to retain the material, the test and the computer programs used for homework such as the MyOpenLab never matches to what the professors teach in class. Many students attend to gain science and math classes for their premed studies, if this is you, avoid at all means. The science department does not help students, and look for students to repeat course just to make more money. Not sure if it’s a cult within the department or what. And there is almost always no one on campus to help with tutoring. Please avoid! Unhelpful, negligent, or even downright racist staff. Ridiculous required classes that are frankly redundant to high school or useless. Refused to pay me the scholarships and wages they promised me for my work and qualifications for scholarships. Repeatedly have made it very clear they just want my money without providing any services of even considerable quality. I've tried to address this with the school and they have not even tried to communicate back with me for 9 out of my 10 attempts. The worst school I have EVER attended. I have had an issue with this school since the day I transferred. Besides their lack of diversity, they do nothing to assist their students and nothing to ensure that they are having the best college experience. My room was not cleaned over the summer (including the mold that was left on my air unit), they tried to fine me for a book that I had already returned, and they take forever to fix any issue that you have. Great academic, athletic, and social life here. However, as a student, the food here is terrible. They need to invest is some qualified personnel and better quality food at Evans. Spellman is the go to, but you can’t live off of Spellman due to the limited options for a decent meal.John Kenaga

I had the best college experience at this school. The classes were small, the teachers were phenomenal and the learning center provided help with any subject I needed assistance with. I was also given an art scholarship which required me to join the art club where I had many invaluable experiences. I can not recommend this school enough!Meredith W

It's cheap, which is great, but the material is way behind in IT which was my department. Still won't forget the time ECC illegaly withdrew $1,800 from my bank account in 2018, which I got back in a legal way. I love this campus so much. The Instructors are fabulous. Dr. Sexton is legitimately my favorite and most influential professor. Since I've been out of college I've come back to sing and I regret nothing and I cannot wait to be more active in this program again. This school is good but the instructor in the fundamentals class is no help I reach out to her at the beginning of the semester for help. she told me that she don’t get paid enough to be coming up with no 200 practice questions and told me to use my resources. They like to belittle you and say I got my degree aren’t you trying to get yours. I hope the dean see’s how horrible these first semester instructor are including the lab instructor nasty attitude and who teaches a class without power points and one instructor speed through lectures.megan youngblood

I've been attending this school for a year now and it's horrible. The technology used in class is way outdated. They need a total upgrade because they place looks rundown. The professors are nice people but horrible instructors. I guess that's why they're teaching at a community college. The students there are very ghetto and immature. And all of my classes' subject matter is way to easy for a 9th grader to comprehend. It's definitely not a college level school. That's why I'm transferring to SLU next semester.The Legend

Atfter 3 years… Word to the wise, more often than not, you never crack open that 100, 200 something dollar book. A quarter of the professors are great people and go above and beyond and are the positives of the university. Another quarter are there and go through the motions, pretty average and that's fine. The rest are communicationally and emotionally compromised and feel the need to be dictators of their classrooms and go on emotional rants unrelated to material, are professors that have checked out because retirement is around the corner, or are teaching assistants in their early 20s and have no idea what they're doing and rush through so they can get THEIR work done. Parking is a mad house the first half of the semester. I've spent an hour trying to find parking and gave up, I've been threatened and screamed at, dealt with aggression and almost hit by cars. It's not like I felt safe on campus anyways or in Springfield for that matter. The school enrollment is growing faster than they're willing to keep up expecting more and more from professors and give less and less to those who pay the continually raising tuition.Steph McCarty

I myself have had a horrible experience at MSU, but I won't let that account for the school as a whole. If you are considering entering the Computer Information Systems program, you should really consider another school. The instructors in the program are currently abysmal. They are working hard to improve the program, but for now you will learn at a pace and challenge level much less than you would even get at OTC. The College of Business in general felt like a degree mill, in my opinion. As for the rest of the campus, it really is great in every way. You can do almost anything you need right on campus easily. The Foster Recreation center has an awesome pool and great selection of workout equipment. The library is also top-notch and has a great selection. I have a feeling that if you're pursuing an education in non-technical subjects, this would be a great school for the money. If that's not the case though, I highly recommend you seek a better business school elsewhere. Springfield has a hard time retaining talent, and you'll find little of it in the more technical departments at MSU.scott knox

BUYER BEWARE: You'll be fine at MSU as long as you don't complain about any lack of teaching pedagogy in your classes. As a student I have had a Jekyll and Hyde type of experience here; some professors include direct instruction (in a number of modalities) others do not. I was told verbatim by a professor; "I'll do what I want and no one can tell me differently". Another professor, on three separate exams, gave no feedback and in a class of 16 students had four A's with the rest, B, C, D, F, range and didn't change his "Educating" the entire semester. One other professor who had given out continual C's and B's – said he didn't need to teach for "Mastery" of the topic – he only needed to give "Students a shot"… Keep in mind professors are experts in an area and not teachers – that is do not have the training and education to teach, to reach students. Further, in classes I have never seen an administrator come and evaluate the level of "Teaching" being done.ME W

terrible people place full of liars and conmen! i had gone a few years back got student aid and had a bunch of things come up and had to drop out so i dropped out within the time frame so i wouldnt have to worry about paying anything back. cool few years go by and out of no where they are claiming i owe them money now and i argued this no one cared to look into this at all and now they take my state taxes every year to pay it back and they refuse to give me my transcripts to attend another college.. absolutely do not waste your time with them its a money sink they dont care about the students they dont care about education they have zero professional pride. honestly goto a proper college get a proper degree because these people dont care about anything but a paycheck. they do absolutely no investigating at all with anything ive got lists of things that happened where a proper investigation should have been done and they didnt. Having attended a number of 4 year universities, I am rather impressed with the quality of the instruction here … and at a fraction of the cost. As traditional private four year universities hunker down and concentrate on obtaining federal grants, and begging for scraps from alumni while generally ignoring the students, this school's mission is primarily educational. Sure the food isn't gourmet, and all the students aren't hand picked from private schools via house recruiters … but, in honesty, this school is more academically rigorous than many private universities, and without all the fluff that costs a pretty penny in tuition. In addition, unlike private universities, one can take classes here just for fun without breaking the bank; many such classes and certifications are offered for those wishing self-improvement and to learn without academics raining on their parade. I particularly recommend the Horticulture Program, it is both top notch and unique.Andrew Covey

I'm wrapping up my associates soon. Meramec is a pretty good college. Advisors are ok, very hit and miss but my advisor was great. Admissions people were not as great. Financial aid is good. Professors are 80% good and 20% bad. The bad ones are REALLY bad and drag down your experience here. Use "rate my professor" or talk to other students to find the good professors. I had a class with a professor that told us he hated his job and we could tell because that class was hell. I doubt many universities are any better because every place has at least a few bad professors. Do your research, advocate for yourself, sign up for good courses, and you will do great and save a ton of money.Katya R

To all the high school freshman posting reviews and rating AMDA 5 stars stop. You do not go there. Do not give it a bigger head than it already has. Attended in 2013-2014 would have been one star if it weren't for some (a few) wonderful teachers. (Stacy Lee, Kathy, Jeff, Tim,and Ray thank you) I am posting this review because they just posted an instagram post about 13 reasons why. They said check this out help is available. Would have been nice if that was ACTUALLY TRUE. However, if you have any sort of mental health problems you are told to grow up! (By teachers AND THE DAMN COUNSELOR) you are told stories of how the show must go on fake it til you make it. If you cannot stop crying you are weak, and theater is just a hobby for you. The teachers name drop and make you feel bad about yourself for not being Jason Derulo.The only person who helped me get help was my acting teacher (god bless him), who sent me to the counselor who told me I was acting like a child and that I need to prioritize. "If this isn't for you you don't have to be here" I told him this is the most depressed I've ever been. No offer to find therapy near me. No weekly meetings. No follow up visit. He suggested I find a new dream. So I did but now I'm 25,000 dollars in debt after 9 of the worst months of my life. Like others have said AMDA is what you make it but if you have any sort of mental health issues don't count on getting any help. PS. The dorms have a large scary roach problem, pretty sure it used to be a mental hospital (how fitting) PPS. I can acknowledge that I learned a good deal in my acting and VPS classes. I joined AMDA NYC back in 2021 Fall. This school has changed my life. Incredible staffing who are all working professionals within the acting world and all are incredibly motivated, fun and inspiring. My time at this school has been nothing but positive thus far and, the school continues to get better and better. I have done my own reading into reviews and the bad reviews have definitely changed. I have seen things change here, I have seen things become progressively better for the students here at AMDA. AMDA has become much more of a supporting and safe environment for not just me but for everybody who needs it. You certainly learn a lot here, develop great connections with your teachers and get plenty of opportunities out here. I myself, am certainly glad that I chose this school. My daughter just graduated in Sept 2017 from NYC in dance. She had a very positive experience from start to finish! Starting with Elliott Kerr, Assistant Director of Admissions. The financial aid process is terrible and I have encountered many road blocks. It took me months just to sort out the paperwork with financial aid. My first semester IN CLASS was good. I enjoyed the class and the teachers were great. I tried to enroll in summer classes and found out I did not have financial aid. It would have been nice to know that this process must be done for each semester. I tried to get financial aid for the fall semester only to encounter another road block. The financial aid office states they need proof of citizenship. I have already provided documents stating I am a naturalized citizen and they have it on file. This is the same document they used to approve me for financial aid my first semester. Suddenly this documentation is not proof enough. Keep in mind I have not been contacted by the school stating this has been an issue. I had to call the school to figure out why I haven't been approved. They gave me the usual run around. Getting anything done at this school is like pulling teeth. If you can go somewhere else I would recommend to do that. Also the financial aid office has some bad attitudes… just want to update that my student loan payments are no longer deferred until after graduation. Im currently considered as unenrolled and my grace period has started which means i am required to make payments on my loans while also trying to re enroll back to this school. At this point i dont even want to go back to collegeStruggle

At the beginning of the year I received a pell grant that totaled my tuition for the entire year and then some. I was then advised that even though I had the money to pay for all of my classes and receive extra afterwards that they would not pay for two of my classes because they are not on my plan for my degree. I am going to a new school in the fall because scc is constantly changing requirements for their degrees and I have 3 classes that I have taken that do not count for anything. So I need those two classes to transfer but they keep emailing me to drop them before it “hinders my financial status”. They don’t pair you with an academic advisor and don’t really help you with choosing classes or advising you of anything beyond your first semester there. I also had a code that I needed for a book for my math class that totaled $60 dollars. I reached out to the financial aid department about this and they said that since the book was through a 3rd party that financial aid would not cover it. All in all this is not a helpful campus. They advertise that they’re a 2 year school but if I stay here it will take at least 3.5 to just get an associates degree. They don’t help with financial aid answers and don’t provide the necessary tools to have a healthy education. All in all I’d rather spend the extra 10 grand and go to a school that is helpful and understands students.Jillian Goetz

I have tried with my daughter to get her Aplus program figured out, and each time she or I go to the admissions desk/department, they seem to not really care and not anxious to help, almost as though they are bothered by her or I asking for help. I would recommend, if you have the option to go to another community college, to be sure to check if the administrative/admissions desk will be willing to help and read reviews about the college you are thinking about choosing. This was my first go around with a child entering college, but for my next 3 we will look for sure at other colleges and other options. If you can get past all the above, my daughter has not had any issues with the professors. So in summary, if you can get past admissions and administrators maybe a good choice. But just be aware you will be figuring things out on your own or plan to be very frustrated and put off due to their processes.The Hawk Seven

this place is horrible .security does nothing if you report something and choice to help students they became friends with . i was attacked by another student and i was the one suspended from the university while the attacker was able to walk free and still go which in there terms says he should be kicked out permanently while i fought the suspension. Also a good majority of the teachers only see you as a number i had a teacher who would let class out within 5 to 10 minutes when it was a hour and 40 minute class and another that refused to make sure everyone understood the problems and projects. if you go only go for a semester and don`t expect to have a happy college experience.isaiah crawley

I had a great experience at Harris Stowe. I received a first class education, created solid relationships and I even got to play baseball. Some of the best years of my life. The staff at the registrars office needs a lot of work. They have made the process of requesting a transcript a disaster. As a "catholic" educational institute the school should understand the need of transcripts and do their best to accommodate students in there path of continuing education. The staff needs to work on both their customer service skills and conflict resolution practices. The behavior of the staff during phone conversations and email correspondence has been completely inappropriate. Our firm would separate from individuals with their antics as soon as possible. I have been requesting my transcript since July 28 and my new school has still not received it. It my understanding that my transcript was finally sent on August 8 but I have been given no proof of that. UMSL understood my concerns on the situation and offered to accept the transcript via email. I sent an email to SLU at 10:40 asking them to send my transcript to UMSL via email as soon as possible. After hearing no response, I sent two additional emails at 12:30 and 2:00 but still received no response or indication my emails had even been requested. I finally called the school at 2:30 and the assistant registrar argued with for several minutes about how I was insulting and didn't allow them time to respond. However, she was well aware of the situation and knew who I was before I even mentioned my name. Instead of arguing for several minutes with a disrespectful attitude the correct method for resolution would have been apologizing for my experience and trying to accommodate my needs. After I explained it is taking more time to argue then to fix the situation I was told it would be emailed that day. At 3:30 I received a completely inappropriate email in which I responded with my concerns on how the school handled the situation. In my opinion the school is more of hassle than it is worth. You should always put the education of your students or former students first instead of treating someone with utter disrespect. I have asked to sit down with whoever oversees the registrars office. I have several suggestions on how the staff can improve and work with students in a respectful and helpful matter.Chelsea Langeneckert

It's a private university, so it costs more than others in the area, but if you have financial need or have great grades, you can get a LOT of help. The school itself feels very separate from the surrounding area. It's almost as if going into another city when you step off campus. The professors are wonderful, the reputation is good, and honestly the grounds are beautiful. I don't regret my time here and would happily attend again.Chelsea

Learn from the best. When I was 19 years old, I was accepted to the Lee Strasberg Theater Institute. It was the highlight of my life at the time. The great teachers back then were Harv Dean and David Gideon. I went to school here part time for 9 months to learn acting at its very basic. If you can afford going to the school and want to learn acting from the aspect of the instrument, then I highly recommend going here. The most important thing I learned from this school, is that even if you attend the classes and do your scene work, you need to be out pounding the pavement and looking for work in the industry, an agent and possibly a manager. I would not call the school glamorous but it does show great pride and respect for people who walks through their doors. If you are serious about acting and show business, this is the place to be. Although I am old enough to be the GRANDmother of most of the students, I had the honor to chat with Lee Strasberg himself, one morning, years ago. He spent nearly a half hour on the phone with me – a total stranger. I had acting aspirations back then (I am a freelance writer today). And I have never forgotten his generosity, wisdom, and graciousness to me – someone he would never meet in person. I love stopping by whenever I can, to donate theatre books, costume pieces, and just sniff around who's doing what. I wasted four years at this school. De Smet claims to help shape students to become men, and it certainly did that. However, instead of helping with problems, De Smet was the problem. The faculty seem to favor students who don't have as many issues because it is easier to assist those with few problems and claim that one has helped someone. It does not follow Catholic Tradition and is a disgrace to the Society of Jesus. Shut it down or hand it over to the archdioceses.John Smith

Another great, free gem for our city. So many exhibits and areas to explore. Throughout the many floors, you can learn about all things science! There are Hands-On activities and artifacts as well as demonstrations and shows. It's a great place to spend the day with kids of all ages. There are other activities for additional cost such as toddler areas, educational movies and interactive exhibits. The video game exhibit on the bottom floor was a little lacking since there were many things that were out of service. The kids always love exploring the dinosaur area and seeing some fossils and geological finds from our area is always cool. We usually park over at the planetarium and walk across the bridge to view the cars driving below but the parking lot has been closed for some time. Unfortunately, the only other parking besides street parking which is 3 hours, is the science Center lot which costs $12. If you purchase a movie ticket you only pay $6 for parking. They offer military discount for service members on several paid offerings. There are concessions and drinking fountains throughout. We really enjoyed the vault area which can be found on the planetarium side of the bridge. Definitely check it out if you're in the St Louis area. We are grateful for this great addition to the city! I remember going here when I was a kid and a teenager and loving it. So we decided to take our kid as a back to school/end of summer vacation. It was amazing. She's 8 and loves Science. Her favorite parts were the Game section and the Electricity section but we spent a really long time in the Grow agriculture section as well she was not aware how many things you could make out of corn. I've honestly never seen her so engaged for so long. There was so much to do that even if something was out of commission it was "oh well! On to the next thing!" Visited on

Very interactive place. 3 sizable floors; an outdoor section; a long bridge over the highway to the planetarium; and a couple of dinosaur statues. Many, many hands-on exhibits for the kids such as a section on solving clues for a mystery, playing chess, playing an old-style Mario Bros. game on a big screen, digging for dinosaurs, building an arch like the St. Louis Gateway Arch and so many others. The exhibits must rotate, as reading some of the older reviews – some of that stuff isn't there now. We did see a movie in the big theater; and it was very immersive. We spent 5 hours there – and didn't even have small children.Dave Cameron

We went to the Arcada theater on May 7th 2022 to see the show with Sumo Cyco, Blacktop Mojo and Buckcherry. The theater is located in downtown St. Charles and it's a pretty small venue. I believe it has about 900 seats. I had purchased two handicapped seats and two regular seats since I am in a wheelchair. The staff could not have been anymore friendly. They were awesome! They brought me to my seat which was actually a very good seat but it was completely opposite side of the theater as my two sons. So one of the ushers asked security if it was okay that my husband and I went to join my sons on the other side of the theater so we can experience our favorite group Blacktop Mojo together. They were so kind to allow it and got me right on the edge of the stage. So not only did I get to see my sons but I also got to see the show right up front! Everybody, the whole night was very accommodating to me and bent over backwards to make sure that I was comfortable. The show was great. We'd actually saw the exact show the week before at a different venue, The Des Plaines theater, which I believed is owned by the same corporation. However, the sound and atmosphere at the Arcada was actually better. We had a great night and I would not hesitate to get to see another show thereJa Chooz

Applause abounds for a fun variety of entertainment. Lobby area gets congested prior to show time. They could use a better system in that regard. Seems to be a continuous plan to update and upkeep this roaring 20's theater. Kudos for trying to be timely and accommodating. Main center floor seating uses standard chairs, while the remaining seats utilize theater flip down seats. Acoustics/sound quality needs improvement. The instruments are loud and drown out the singer(s). Instrumental sound should compliment, not compete with the song performer. Visit their restaurant upstairs after a mid day show or choose from many area restaurants within walking distance.Judy Haskell

We visited for a murder mystery dinner which included dinner and the murder mystery. It was my first time there. The dinner was delicious even thought they must have pumped out a ton of food quickly. Their was not an open seat in the restaurant due to the event but there was a man singing Frank Sinatra during our meal. The decor was fun and tasteful. We then headed down to the theater for our murder mystery portion. This was a lot of fun as well and very interactive. There were staff who helped guide us but largely audience driven and participation. What a wonderful night!Blair Rivera

I have been to this theatre many times over the years for all types of shows. I aways have a great time. Most seats have great views. I've only struggled to see a show when I sat in the very last row on the second floor balcony. It's a good idea to go with a lower row on the second floor. If you are able to get seats in the boxes for a special occasion I recommend it. You'll have parking on the theatre lot and also a waiter that you can purchase drinks and snacks from. If you're a season ticket holder definitely buy the parking pass for the parking garage nextdoor. It's very convenient. Buy your food and drinks when you first get in the doors because if it is a sold out show they will run out of things sometimes. Seats are comfortable and the staff is knowledgeable.Amanda Colesworthy

An actually fabulous venue! It’s stunning architecture is jaw dropping. No matter how many times I come to this building I always see something new and beautiful that I missed before. It’s a large and well thought of venue that hosts broadways biggest productions like Hamilton, Wicked, and Lion King. No matter what seat you’re in, you’re sure to have a memorable and enjoyable experience! Pro tip, the bathrooms on the top floor are usually quieter than the rest, and the ladies lounge is gorgeous!Emily Paul

As always, The Fox was amazing. It is known as The Fabulous Fox and delivers – simply stunning architecture and a yearly line-up of amazing entertainers and Broadway shows. There is no bad seat at the Fox. Come early and tour Peacock Alley to see all the amazing artists that have performed at the Fox since its opening. True nostalgia meets you at the front sidewalk. Very frustrated they are still requiring masks and vaccination cards when no one else in town is. If your mask is pulled down they quickly tell you to pull it back on. They also have chairs marked for social distancing. I’m not understanding all the precautions when no one else in St. Louis is doing this. I did not like 39 steps at all it was very hard to follow, confusing and boring at times. Christmas carol was amazing.Krista Goldman

My girlfriend and I went here the week of Christmas to see "A Christmas Carol". We weren't expecting much, but wow! We were both in awe at how amazingly well it was done. From the actors to the costumes, stage settings and props, it was really well done! We're both looking forward to coming back in the future. Excellent experience. Saw “Pride and Prejudice” here recently. Easy free nearby parking, great theater size (not too big but not too small) with quality shows. Seats are spacious enough. The sets, artistry, and lighting effects were spectacular. Very fun theater experience. I look forward to coming back again soon!Chelsea C
