20 Best Acting Programs In Seattle, WA (2022 Updated)

I came from England to study for a Batchelor’s Degree in Filmmaking and I graduated in October 2017 after an intensive one year course of study. I have read and agree with the comments in the reviews of my fellow former students Nathan Hare and Nicky Smit. Like them I award Seattle Film Institute ‘4 stars’. The school is reasonably well-geared up to take foreign students, but the course is taught in English and it is intense. Support of students is good, there is a wide range of equipment available for use, (the vast majority of which works well, despite what some reviewers have said) and the teaching quality is ‘good’ for the most part, ‘very good’ in particular classes and excellent in some other areas. At times the organisational skills of the institution left a little to be desired, but this was not generally the case – for the most part the admin. was good, with some areas ‘needing work’ at times. The ‘atmosphere’ is very good, (well at the odd time or two it wasn’t), and the benefit to be gained from collaborating with one’s fellow students in filmmaking projects is incalculable. I made good friends along the way, who when they are as successful as I expect to be I can call ‘contacts’; hopefully they will think the same of me! All in all a valuable, instructive and enjoyable experience, which I feel is a very good introduction into the world of making films, properly and for real. Four stars, but don't go if you don't like hard work, as that is the key to success at SFI and key to its success as a Film-making / Acting / Composing / Motion Graphics and Sound Design College.Robert Askey

Failing to heed the other bad reviews of SFI online, I took an intro to film making course offered at night and taught by SFI owner operators. It was the most disorganized and inefficient course I've ever taken on anything. The instructor was continuously going off on tangents and failing to demonstrate the basics of film in a manner that had any meaningful impact. In addition, we spent four to five weeks being forced to take home and use very old Super 8 cameras that were all broken in one way or another. The F stops were dysfunctional and mine wouldn't even focus. We actually got to touch more modern cameras only once or twice for very brief periods and received minimal instruction on higher-end cameras–the kind we would actually use if we were serious. Examples of lighting for scenes came once towards the end of the class. Film editing with Premiere was another exercise in futility, malfunctioning equipment, and the usual lack of focus. We did receive a cheap book regarding the rudiments of film-making which was helpful, but the cost of the course was a whopping $795.00. I could have bought a more useful book and used the rest of the money to buy some lighting and other gear. One of the other students and I made a short film using our own iPhones because SFI would not give us one of the higher end cameras that we had already paid for in advance–because it was checked out! We are proceeding to get our money back as I write this.MB NYCity

I very much enjoyed my time here as part of SFI's very first Acting for Film program. We were fortunate to have a great staff of working, Pacific Northwest actors of both film and theatre (many of whom also taught at other schools, including Shoreline Community College and Cornish College of the Arts), as well as an amazing, local casting director. A couple months into the program, the tiny school already felt like home. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, and it was easy to make friends/connections in the lobby with filmmakers, writers, makeup artists, directors, editors, etc. I also highly enjoyed taking part in several of their short film projects. This school does need improvement in organization, quality of equipment, holding accountability of student project completion, and active response to student evaluation feedback. Since graduation, I have returned to take classes and have seen improvements in some of these aspects, but there is still a long way to go. Nonetheless, I recommend this school for aspiring actors who would enjoy small, intimate classes with one-on-one feedback and making great friends/connections along the way.Nathan Hare

Great way to introduce your kiddos to theater and big crowds. We saw "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" production and my little one was thrilled to watch the characters/animals in his books come out on stage. The theater is cozy and seats comfortable, washrooms are clean and some sections are kiddie-height. Parking is available at lots surrounding Seattle Center.Richie Magpayo

I got to see a number of live shows here when I taught pre-k in the area. I looked forward to our annual school trips here just as much as the kiddos did. The shows were always spectacular and just as enjoyable for adults as well as the kids. I loved it when they engaged the audience at the end of the shows— They’d play games and have Q&A sessions.Rachel D.

Gage Academy of Art is a gift. The instructors are highly capable teachers and artists, offering an opportunity for students to learn more in a few classes, than may be possible in an arts degree from larger schools. Gage's strength lies in providing classes solid in foundational skills for drawing, painting and sculpture. I highly recommend any class taught by Mitch Albala. HIs Landscape painting course was stellar. 5-stars. Gage's youth program is also an incredible opportunity for teens (and kids) to learn solid skills and gain confidence. My teen is thrilled with the classes she's taken (4 so far), feels supported by the instructors and empowered by engaging in a class that gives her a skill set of understanding and focus. She said "If I could learn this much at High School, I'd LOVE to get up in the morning!" (no small feat). My only regret in regards to Gage, is that it wasn't around when I was a teen, it would've saved me years of 'learning the hard way'. So for Fun, or for professional development – don't hesitate – take a class, or two…Tamara Lee

My pre-teen daughter attended a week-long summer camp at Gage and enjoyed it. The camp mostly involved art (collages with modpodge, book cover designs, cardboard creations, other art with pen and paint toward the creation of a zine, etc.). She also did some creative movement, which she found interesting. Overall, she enjoyed the camp. The location is easy to get to and there are places to park as you do dropoffs and pickups. I wish they did more writing with the book projects, though. It was heavy on the art and not much on the story or writing. I also thought more directed instruction with techniques could have made it better, but I think providing a space for the kids to create on their own, following their own inner artist, so to speak, was worthwhile. The room didn't have AC, but kids didn't seem to mind much. The room was oozing with a sense of art and project-making/building.Tom Johnson

Gage Academy is a top notch art school. The Aristides Atelier, taught by the highly acclaimed painter, Juliette Aristides, is a serious multi-year program for serious painters who want to learn the technical skills of the 'master painters' of the Renaissance. She teaches both realist figure painting and still life. The two other ateliers specialize in still life taught by Gary Faigin (Gage Founder) and the more conceptual painting atelier is taught by Mark Kang O' Higgins. All three of these instructors are successful painters in their own right. The sculpture atelier is also excellent, taught by local sculptor, Mike McGrath. As a graduate from Rhode Island School of Design, I highly recommend Gage Academy. PS- I have never had any trouble with any receptionist there.Eve Alyson

The artists hosted here are Broadway-quality. 🤩 The shows on this stage stay genuinely true to their respective books. Howl's Moving Castle especially sticks out to me— I dragged along my best friend, who thought they were just going to be sitting bored for two hours, to the Christmas Eve showing. By intermission, however, they met my "𝘿𝙐𝙐𝘿𝙀! That was so good!!" with an enthusiastic "𝙎𝙊 good!! I didn't expect anything like that!" TL;DR Thanks to Book-It RT, I converted my friend who thought performing arts are boring. Concessions are as pricey as you'd expect. But hey, support a small theatre and get candy/popcorn/sandwiches and soda/water/coffee/cocoa in return! (u can't take them into the theatre, obviously.) Lobby is homey and has interesting information about details of the show as well as public input to do with the themes of the show to get you thinking. Over the years I've attended several Book-It Repertory Theatre's productions, and I've always come home glad that I went. As a senior citizen on limited income, it's often easy for me to get a very low-price Rush seat (arrive at 7:00 if you're interested in Rush). My favorites have been their productions of the classics. Just love those classics!T. Christine

Book-It always has the best shows. With other theaters I never know if the show will be hit or a miss, but Book-It never fails to impress!! It has such wonderful stylistic choices and relevant story topics, and the staff are always very friendly. Oh, and it’s totally cheaper than other theaters in the area. We went to see a home from Away, on its final matinee performance before moving on. The theatre is a feast for the eyes with its highly ornate Chinese themed interior. The lobby is and always will be kind of tight for the number of seats, so it is always frantic getting drinks and going to the bathroom. It is however easy to get to on light rail and a great experience as far as the theatre itself goes.Richard Hughes

Small enough theater that you can't get a "bad" seat, but big enough to hold some awesome shows. Obviously ticket prices will vary based on performance, but they were pretty reasonable for the Broadway "Beauty and the Beast". Parking and traffic are the biggest drawbacks, but that's Seattle for you. Don't let anything stop you from seeing a show here.Huck Finn

I watched one of the best shows in this theater. The staff at the box office were extremely polite and helpful. They were very attentive to details and helped getting me one of the best seats because of this theater appreciation of educators. They follow very strict health and safety procedures, which were comforting and assuring. Love it!Tamara

I will never purchase tickets to this theatre again. I bought 2 season tickets and only saw 2 of the shows during covid. They then decided to KEEP MY MONEY as a tax donation after I repeatedly told them I wanted a refund. That is theft. A disgusting way to treat patrons. I need those funds during a very hard time. Went to see Freestyle Love Supreme here last night. It was my first time at the Seattle Rep. The theater was quite intimate. I don't think there is a bad seat in the house. Tickets to the show were very reasonably priced, much less expensive than shows at the Paramount or 5th Avenue. I would highly recommend this show specifically and would definitely return to the Seattle Rep for shows in the futureStephanie Fisher

We saw "And That Happened" yesterday (6/18/22), and were BLOWN AWAY!! We laughed; we cried; we pondered; we clapped along with the irrepressible and so-very-talented cast. Well this is a community fixture and performing Hub. Named after the late great Langston Hughes, this former synagogue has wonderful performance spaces. The photo montage was taken inside the main stage area under the rotunda dome. This offers good acoustics but is enhanced with microphones and speakers. I have been to many events here, mostly celebrating people of color and people from the community. Wonderful memories here. This is a really well designed urban space. Most visitors come for the paid attractions (which can be pricey), but if you're not keen on any of them, you can just walk around and enjoy the scenery. The only public restrooms outside the paid attractions are at the Armory building, which also has a food hall if you get hungry (expect to pay top dollar for the food). If you're arriving by car, there are various paid parking options within the vicinity. We found a parking garage along Harrison Street and paid $15, which is valid for up to 12 hours of parking. I'd recommend the monorail for those who prefer not to drive to this place.G Aquino

I must see & experience when in Seattle. Will caution if you are afraid of heights or have Vertigo – don't go to the top. Love the improved glass view – what an improvement from my first vidit 10 yrs ago. Loved the rotating glass floor – so cool! The surrounding grounds & gift shop are nice to hang out while waiting from someone to down from the top. Tickets available through kiosks & pricing was fine. I hope you enjoy a clear day. Seattle Center is an amazing urban space. There is a series of museums and city landmarks for tourists and locals alike, and the open and green spaces are great for taking a walk or take a break. Space Needle is such a photogenic tower that from any angle, at any time of the day, it looks so beautiful. I don't come here often but every time I come I always stay longer than I planned.Yü Wu

I bring my dreams to Off the Wall. They seem to be just dreams. But then staff take them and help me to walk those steps to make my dream happen. My teacher, Caleb, teaches me with so much warmth, good humor, and solid advice so that I will stay encouraged as I meet each challenge and master each accomplishment. I am so impressed, while I am waiting for my lesson in the lobby, at the warmth and joy that staff extend to each child, family member, and adult aspirant. They encourage us all to revel in the joy of music. I am 67 years old and I am thrilled to fill out my life with grounded practice and all the help I need to understand what I am wanting to accomplish. And yes, my dream: I want to be able to accompany myself while I sing standards. My very secret dream is to play at a bar regularly for one hour before happy hour when there are not that many people around. This school has been very informative and understanding in consideration of my "deer in headlights" nature while exploring music lessons with my 4 1/2 year old. We have worked with both teacher Neal (ukulele) and teacher Chris (piano). They even lent us a keyboard to practice piano as well! It was so nice of them! Very open and understanding school overall. My one small hang up is that I'm sort of old school and if I have a question, I want to be able to call and talk with someone on the fly. However, online inquiries and scheduling probably jives with a majority of people these days so all in all, it's probably not a pressing issue for most others! aggressive administration will bill you even when you follow their inflexible rules. i felt like i was talking to comcast. you cant call them to discuss it either, they MUST call you. also they won't excuse or reschedule a sick child with over 36hours notice. and the teacher says things like "email me if i forget to send your daughter the sheet music for the week." wha? that's my job? the parking is insane. the prices are higher than average. it's sad because its a cute place with mostly decent teachers. they are just running it like a large unforgiving psychopathic soulless corporation. all that for a 5th grader to learn how to play some basics? no thanks.matt h

I first came across The Studio when I was searching for acting schools in Seattle. Coming from a theatrical past, I still have a few connections in theatre, however, I have always felt a strong desire to act in front of the camera. Starting this search from scratch, I feel lucky to have found Andrew Tsao, and the Studio. If you're like me, you have a desire to act and experienced something that has compelled you to take action. I took a chance on taking the Creating Life class offered and I do not regret it. Over the course of 8 weeks, I got to learn from an experienced teacher, try new things, and watch my peers learn and experiment. Even over Zoom, we had a great class and I took so many helpful notes to help me hone my skills and the methods/tools I learned have prepared me to build upon a solid foundation in further classes. This is a wonderful professional family. My 6 year old actor attended his first class today. He gave Coach Nina a hard time, complete with emotional outbursts, and she still came out smiling and loving him. She clearly treated him well in private too because he couldn't give her enough hugs. On the way home he was talking about the exercises and class structure. I took a Beginning Drawing class with Lyall at the Seattle Artist League Art School, and I highly recommend it! It was a 6-week program, for 3 hours every Tuesday, and every week we focused on a different aspect of drawing from shadow, to perspective, to form, and more. I thought it did a great job building on the different techniques until the later classes when we got to have a model come in. If you're thinking about it, I say jump in and do it. Lyall did a great job encouraging every single person, no matter their perceived skill level. When we were all looking at each other's work he made sure to comment on the things we did well, what we can do to think about how to approach the drawing next time, etc.Amanda James

I've been taking classes at the League for a bit over three years. Not only is it a very welcoming place for all skill levels, individual styles and interests are embraced and encouraged to grow. My art has improved so much since taking classes here. It's been a really wonderful and relaxing creative outlet. I took the beginning wheel throwing pottery class. It was so informative and fun, I'm taking it again just to have access to the studio and review some concepts I didn't get until the very end of the class. Unlike other places that have one-off art classes, this one had a nice age range of students and skills. We saw Two Mile Hollow and it was wonderful. I thought it was such A Seattle Play, a satire on race and woke culture relations, etc. So I was surprised to see it had its debut in Chicago five years ago. I have been so impressed with my experience thus far with American Dance Institute, aka ADI. Our whole family attends classes at their Magnolia location. The studio while small is very well kept. The instructors are wonderful–skilled, friendly, welcoming and very good at what they do. My son is in the 5-7 year old Hip Hop class and LOVES it! My daughter takes Pre-Ballet and I am so impressed that her instructor is teaching them the appropriate ballet terms and introducing her students to all the correct positions while still making it so FUN. Having taken twelve years of classical ballet myself I wanted a class that wasn't a bunch of fluff and just running around the room with scarves but I am also not interested in the competitive and sometimes very elitist culture that can exist at some studios. ADI accomplishes both of my objectives; it is a warm and inclusive environment that also has high expectations of its students and clearly hires well-trained staff. I too am taking classes here and feel both challenged and invigorated by the adult ballet class.Alyssa Agee

What a heart warming place. I was visiting from Florida and stumbled upon the institute and spontaneously decided to check it out. I’ve been wanting to take ballet for the past 6 years and it never happened. But I had to come to Seattle to finally do it! I walked into the office and the person greeted me like an old friend. She explained everything, listened to me, gave me advice about what class is suitable for me and told me the times when to come try it out. Super nice. First class is free people! What do you have to lose? They have sooo many classes to chose from! From ballet to Flamenco to modern dance and whatever else in various levels for children and adults. Super convenient in two large studios. Rebecca was my teacher and I can not recommend her enough. She was so attentive and professional and knowledgeable. At this time of this writing, I am in my second term of Ballet at ADI. I'm an adult and I didn't start dancing at all until after I was 30. To me, going into a room full of mirrors and strangers, and moving my body around in front of them is one of the most terrifying things I've ever done (and I regularly do terrifying things). None of my friends or coworkers do ballet, and none of my friends growing up did ballet after early childhood. I still had to deal with all of the anxiety I brought with me. However, the staff at ADI has been welcoming and attentive, and they regularly take it upon themselves to deliver a better service as a business and a school. If you're an adult and you have an interest in ballet, and you're worried about starting decades late, or if you want to participate in dance, but you need help getting there, then I recommend ADI, because they have experience being professional and compassionate.Ellie Barrett

I should have posted this a long time ago, but it's better late than never! When I got a new job as a book interior designer, I knew nothing about InDesign at all. My new employer paid for me to take classes at Luminous Works. The staff was incredible accommodating to all those their classes, and their level of knowledge in their subjects is unprecedented. Within several classes I took, I was equipped to jump into my new job and do what I needed to do. Six months later, I'm still applying the knowledge I gained from my classes at Luminous Works. Steve is a Wizard of InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator. Not only is he a wellspring of knowledge, but he genuinely loves teaching and the classroom environment. Steve is quick to answer questions and eager to problem-solve. The pace of the class is excellent and he doesn't mind spending more time on a subject if the interest is there. Beyond the classroom, Steve and his wife Carla are lovely people. There's no reason not to attend Luminous Works if you're in the Seattle area and are curious about the courses they offer. I highly recommend their courses! I took the 2 day Essentials of Illustrator. The course design was well structured with follow along practices. The instructor Steve was extremely knowledgeable, patient with questions, and gauged the learners needs well. I cannot recommend Chad's class enough! I had been wanting to try out improv for a long time but was incredibly nervous. The welcoming and supportive environment that Chad provided was a great way to get my feet wet. The lessons learned also translate amazingly well to real life. My two daughters had Maite as a teacher. She is brilliant ,so caring , patient and highly skilled.My kids have been extremely happy with her and I’m so grateful for that. Maite made always a wonderful combination of learning and play in a lovely atmosphere. She really gets to know each child really well and this is very important. My kids grew in confidence and developed and appetite for learning that really prepared them for life at school. My daughters are multilingual now and I’ve seen a progress on their artwork, social skills, acting, drawing and writing skills. I would definitely recommend La Colmenita to other parents. I love this preschool. Everything is spotless and the owner, Mayte, treats each child with so much love and care. She treats every member like family and fosters a great environment where children can play together and learn all at the same time. I highly recommend.Victoria Pesaturo

Mayte is a lovely person and an amazing teacher! You can tell that she really loves and cares about the kids. It is also great that they have half day and full day programs available! The kids learn a lot and have fun playing.Lucia Olt
