20 Best Acting Programs In Mcallen, TX (2022 Updated)

My experience at the Barrow Group has truly helped me not to give up as an actor. After moving to NYC in 2009, my very talented friend recommended that I take classes at The Barrow Group. I trusted his recommendation because he was very knowledgable about the class options in the city. I am so thankful that I found the Barrow Group!! I really missed my theatre community from Graduate School and the Barrow Group became my NYC home base. I have taken four classes with Lee Brock and I have learned so much from her. She helped me go back to the beginning…back to those years before all of the training…Lee helped me go back to the 'Story.' She helped me to focus on what truly matters…telling the story! The teaching style of the Barrow Group is extremely accessible to actors. You can get a feel for the teachings style by reading Seth Barrish's book "An Actor's Companion: 99 Bit of Craft." I am starting my fourth class tomorrow. Obviously, I love this place. The teachers are friendly, down to earth, and REALLY know their stuff. It really is amazing, the learning curve, and how much you do learn during just one class, let alone three. The teaching methods are so great, it makes you almost feel like what you have learned should have been common sense. I've attended one of their shows (so far), and it was really an inspiring experience, with just superb acting. I had studied for many years with some of the best and most highly regarded teachers in the acting community but it wasn't until I found the Barrow Group that I felt I became a good actor. It was so great to be back at the Hobby Center- have missed live theater- however, was not impressed with the mask natzis They sell drinks, but are in your face as soon as you swallow. I actually attend the other campus, but have had to stop by here for books or to see the proff. So far it seems like a very organized campus. I've come at different times of the day and there's always parking (sometimes further away, but I carry an umbrella for the sun) Once there were mariachi playing outside. The employees are always very helpful & professional and most of the students appear to be engaged in their environment. The bathrooms have always been clean when I've gone. I've taken 3 courses so far and the classes have been very engaging. This is a career change for me so I'm older, but I don't feel out of place.Gracie G

I was excited about going back to school it’s been 8 years and then I get bounced back and forth from one department to another and finally they tell me you have to get in contact with the Counseling department so I did I called and sent out an email on November 4 and haven’t gotten a response 🤔 maybe they are understaffed, okay but I’ve called 5 times today November 11 and no one answered I don’t get it 🤦🏽‍♂️ I honestly I don’t. I would not recommend this university to any of my friends or family, if zero stars were an option this is what they would receive, yes they did expand the university but made things worse. Graduation ceremonies are held opposite of their campus area, for instance if you are attending the Brownsville campus, your graduation ceremony will be held in Edinburg and vice versa. The cost of attending has sky rocketed. A couple of my friends who earned a double major had to fight tooth and nail for their respective degree majors'. To make things worse their parking is atrocious, even to get a visitor pass, you must pay!? What. The. Hell. Man! Lastly, they care nothing for their veterans – this university only works if you either know or are related to the person who is offering the job, if I'm being honest, our military veterans sacrificed more than any regular civilian ever would and therefore should be consider first and foremost amongst people who are not veterans. Take my advice, veterans, do yourself a favor, have Uncle Sam help pay your school elsewhere.LÖRD GAMBINI

Very little effort put in by the staff to do anything more than waste their students' time and money. Impossible to get hold of any of the advisory staff when it comes to things like tuition, curriculum, or international student programs. My SO has been going to this college on an education visa for years (more than she should have needed to to begin with) and sank a lot of money into getting a proper education, and the lack of effort to facilitate this for both her and other students- domestic or foreign- deeply disturbs me. It's been nothing but a constant source of stress and a constant hemorrhage in her wallet. Apparently this school is on probation for their overt lack of quality/effort but because members of the school body have good connections it's been kept open. School board really needs to dig their claws into this place and start making some major, sincere changes.Dag Von Danger

You get what you pay for. They offer some of the lowest tuition rates in the state, but that's the only upside. Facilities are poor, parking is rarely available, and there is a severe lack of course availability. Communication has been very poor, and we've struggled to get information from the college nor any assistance with enrollment. I had to make a complaint with the President's office just to get the help I needed. Plus, their employees are rather nasty and sociopathic. They have little-to-no concern for their students, and they're not afraid to show it. There is a lot of room for improvement here. Plus, I don't like how they are using student tuition money to recruit new students from Mexico, as well as undocumented aliens. Worry about your own students first.G68

Learn from the best. When I was 19 years old, I was accepted to the Lee Strasberg Theater Institute. It was the highlight of my life at the time. The great teachers back then were Harv Dean and David Gideon. I went to school here part time for 9 months to learn acting at its very basic. If you can afford going to the school and want to learn acting from the aspect of the instrument, then I highly recommend going here. The most important thing I learned from this school, is that even if you attend the classes and do your scene work, you need to be out pounding the pavement and looking for work in the industry, an agent and possibly a manager. I would not call the school glamorous but it does show great pride and respect for people who walks through their doors. If you are serious about acting and show business, this is the place to be. Although I am old enough to be the GRANDmother of most of the students, I had the honor to chat with Lee Strasberg himself, one morning, years ago. He spent nearly a half hour on the phone with me – a total stranger. I had acting aspirations back then (I am a freelance writer today). And I have never forgotten his generosity, wisdom, and graciousness to me – someone he would never meet in person. I love stopping by whenever I can, to donate theatre books, costume pieces, and just sniff around who's doing what. If you enjoy seeing theatrical productions then you must see a show at the ZACH Theatre. There are three venues where shows are presented; The Topfer (signature 420 seat), The Kleberg (square 210 set), and The Whisenhunt (circular 130). There is also Bobbi Pavilion which is a pop up mostly used for fundraisers. The ZACH uses these spaces wisely to give the audience a rememberable experience. There is paid parking in front or free parking for show subscribers. The two smaller venues are special where never expect what may happen where twice have been pulled on stage to be part of the show. This why I always prepare myself in case it happens again. As for the cast they perform excellent and will be impressed. The rest of the team does an excellent job with set design, making guest feel welcomed, and bartenders serving tasty drinks. This night I saw ‘The Sound of Music’ and before the show a Polka band entertained the crowd where the stage was enlarged into the seats by having long tables for patrons to sit on the stage. It was very unique and worked well. The performance was spectacular with full crowded on their feet at the end. It’s a special place and reason I renew my subscription every year.Paul Delacruz

Zach is the best theater organization in the Austin area! I've been a season subscriber for 10 years, and can honestly say they always land the perfect performers for their plays and musicals. (Side note: if you see that Paul Sanchez is in a performance, it doesn't matter what it is–it will be incredible!) Every season there is a good balance of performances. Generally, I can rely on at least one musical, one true family friendly play, a well-known work, plus other enjoyable selections. If a season subscription is not your thing, single tickets are available for everyone performance. Also, unlike smaller theaters, Zach is able to have long runs of their shows, so you have many options for attending. Finally, there are no bad seats with either the Topfer Theater (traditional seating) or Kleburg Stage (in the round).Heather C.

This was my first time to Zack and I was really impressed. Everything about my experience was like watching a well oiled machine come to life. Parking was easy, the grounds were beautiful, and the building fresh and clean. We were greeted promptly and had little wait at the Box Office (two really friendly guys helped us). KD Conservatory is a fantastic, intensive, pro-active program that will teach you everything you need to know to confidently enter the world of entertainment on any level, be that live theatre, television, broadcast, film on ANY side of the camera (actors, writers, directors, producers, all forms of the crew, etc…), as well as build you a rock solid foundation of acting technique, acute physical awareness, and an entertainment business acumen on which to accurately and responsibly make choices about your work. Furthermore, KD Conservatory has not only aided my education and lead me to professional work in my industry, but the school has facilitated the same success to my circle of alumni (of no less than a dozen that I can recall off-hand) who all continue to make money doing what they love- acting, singing, dancing, music directing, directing, producing, and teaching. Advice: Don't EVER accept advice on acting from somebody who is not a successful working actor. Don't seek their counsel because they know nothing. People who say that this school is a scam are either not serious enough about their career to understand the training they really need. OR, they are already beyond the teaching they could potentially receive at KD and should, therefor, already be booking professional gigs. Lastly, BE ADSIVED, NOTHING WILL BE HANDED TO YOU. I have been training at KD Conservatory for 4 weeks now as a Musical Theatre major and let me tell you that this place is amazing. There are some amazing opportunities from training with Michael Serrechia and putting on Musical performances to learning Ballet technique to learning piano, increasing your acting abilities, jazz, tap, vocal performance and so much more!!! My experience was great! My daughter's teacher was amazing! Not to often you find a teacher who loves what they do and are good at it! I'd recommend this school to my family and friends! Amazing school, one of the best I’ve ever attended. Teachers are very nice, helpful, and understanding, and there is many credits available to help you with your high school and college choice. The students there are also chill, and there is rarely any conflict at all. (I haven’t seen any as a matter of fact.) The homework is alright, some days they do give you more than others but it’s all for the better so you can do better academically. I am very happy I transferred out of this school. Folks who are considering applying here, please proceed with caution. I strongly urge you to reconsider. I wish somebody had told me the truth about The Theatre School when I was a senior in high school. This conservatory could be of great value to up and coming theatre artists, especially given that Chicago has such a vibrant theatre scene. But due to the uncompromising rules surrounding theatre participation outside of the school (which is not an option for BFA actors and an enormous, often impossible, obstacle for other theatre majors), The Theatre School creates an insular bubble in which students can only grow within the walls of their conservatory. However, if the content of what TTS students were learning daily was as rigorous as promised in orientations and tour guides, experience outside of the classroom would not be as necessary. Sadly, the majority of professors (not all) at TTS are far more interested in lecturing on themselves than on relevant theatre topics. This may be part of the reason why there are such harsh rules surrounding theatre participation outside of the school. Without a captive and naive audience, TTS professors and faculty would be forced to do their jobs of catering to students, rather than themselves. Naturally, given all of these factors, the productions are less than impressive, despite the surplus of talented students. It is very hard to do you best work when the environment is so toxic. It makes me very sad that such a bland and disappointing conservatory resides in Chicago. Unlike elitist faculty at TTS (and some students, because attitudes spread), Chicago theatre artists are some of the most humble, authentic people I have been privileged enough of to work with. I hope that my review does not stop aspiring theatre artists from joining the artistic community here. There are plenty of ways to be involved in theatre in Chicago without wasting tuition money on The Theatre School.Grace Melon

I really enjoyed the musical “The Bat Boy” they put on. It was a first for being there and We got stage side tickets. I will say they were great seats but for this performance we were looking at a lot of back ends. Next time, and there will be a next time, we’ll get tickets for more the front of the stage. The place is old but well kept up. I really like the history of it. The actors/singers did a really great job of this musical which before these tickets I had never known or heard about. I have been acting professionally for a few years now and I must say I wish I had started this course sooner! Definitely one of the best acting training courses in the DFW area. TBell acting Studio classes are great for all acting levels. The price is well worth it plus, in my opinion it adds a bit more professionalism to the talent pool. Besides you don’t have to take the class for a certain amount of time. It’s month to month. Consistency in this field is best but not always everyone’s path. And they understand that. Hands down great studio. When I first auditioned (one of the only studios in the area which you have to audition for. Welcome to the industry.) I just knew I nailed it and was honestly disappointed to hear I got placed in beginners class. After being coached by April Hartman, I later realized why I was not ready for intermediate classes. I did not know how to brake down a script, scene study, or even quickly memorize lines. Once I was well established with the steps and it was time for me, I then got moved to intermediate class by TBell. I was excited and nervous at the same time. This is the instructor for crying out loud lol. With TBell she doesn’t just allow you to give a little of yourself. She pushes you to commit to the character. I cannot stress how you will start to watch tv/film so differently. Oh and not to mention, when in network sessions the name comes top tier in DFW ;).Raven

The program is a beautifully organized class. It allows students to focus on a variation of techniques that are used by high-level professionals. The program is a great environment to feel comfortable while being vulnerable. It encourages learning and growth in a way that many other programs lack. I love the Playground Acting Program. I took The Professional Aspects of Acting class in Spring 2021 and am now taking Adult Scene Study in Fall 2021. The classes do a fabulous job of reinforcing various things I’ve learned in previous acting classes while teaching me several new things and new ways to approach a performance or audition. I'm a concerned dance mom with an older (teenage) daughter. She grew up at the dance studio and used to love going to it, but now dreads it because of the cliques. When I come home, she tells me that she sits alone while waiting for the teacher to arrive (class usually starts late). She stated that her class doesn't feel like a cohesive team anymore. The technique classes are very helpful and the education is superb, but I wish that the environment was less segregated and more family-oriented. Blown away!! My son recently performed in the school play, and he did quite well. Then he asked to do another play so I started looking for theater opportunities for him. I found the North Texas Performing Arts and sent an email. Brought the info home and discussed it then signed him up for his first theater camp. He was excited every day of camp and came home every day with a smile. The show was brilliant, fun, and so worth it. Seeing these young people get so into their parts and bringing the story to life was amazing. We haven’t allowed my son to audition for the next play just yet, as school is about to start and school comes first, but he will, and I’m sure that he will enjoy his next production. I greatly enjoyed the shows I participated in at this theater, however as time went on they became more focused on who donated more, and began to cast based on that. There was a lot of favoritism shown by some directors for students who's parents volunteered and donated money, and those who's parents were busy were often cast as ensemble regardless of skill or experience. The administration there is rarely concerned with anyones opinions if they don't donate any money. Watching the shows is a fun experience.Hannah Firestar

This is an amazing facility and the number of shows and the quality is outstanding. My family and I drive from Irving to attend performances there and I am always blown away by the talent of the kids and adults. The lighting, sound and seating is excellent in each of their four theaters. I wish I had this when I was a kid! I booked the Gables for a 10hr conference event and it could not have been more perfect. Troy took care of us so incredibly well that our attendees thought he was a close friend of the speakers and a volunteer. We could not have asked for a better experience or a better price. No other venue this size has so much value, and rarely do venues ever care as much as Troy did for us. He even helped us when we were carrying our personal belongings to our cars, and went to the parking lot with us to say goodbye. Good place for low priced movies. The first showing was a bit chaotic due to one of the workers being late, however the girl that was there was running both registers and doing an amazing job at helping customers despite being short handed. She deserves a raise for sure!! The popcorn was fresh, and the pickles were cold! Only theater I know that serves cold pickles which adds to their flavor. The theater was clean and the over all vibe of the area was relaxing. May not be the most comfortable seats in the valley but still great value for what you pay.Lord Maverick

ONLY thing I hate is the prices for the popcorn and drinks. I could never work there. I would be so embarrassed to charge so much money for those items. I would hate paying that if I was the one that won the billion dollar lotto a few weeks ago. It's not about being cheap, it's about families being able to go enjoy a movie.Maria Garza

I went to see Mrs. Harris goes to Paris at Cinemark Movies 6 in McAllen, Texas. I went during the week to a 1:20pm showing. Popcorn 🍿 was perfect. The seats were leather. Very nice. The movie was so upbeat. The Cinemark Movies 6 was clean and the employees were friendly. Just overall wonderful.Yvette Quiroz
