20 Best Acting Programs In Detroit, MI (2022 Updated)

I attended a meeting at Marygrove College and learned all about their revitalization of the campus. The buildings were constructed in the 1920’s.  They had fallen into disuse over the past decade. At this time they are being remodeled and repaired.  A college will begin operation in the main building shortly and in some cases is already in operation. Over the next two years an elementary school with attached high school will start to operate in one of the buildings.  At this time of year the grounds look sparse and bare.  I am looking forward to the spring and will return to look at it at that time. The woodwork in the building is still intact.  There are many religious artifacts and statues of great beauty.  The classrooms are large and have plenty of natural lighting. The telecommunications system is due to be updated. The people that work here are professional, interested, intelligent and kind.  I was especially happy to tour their beautiful library.  I will need to return when the sun is out and the windows are all open.  It is going to be a beautiful teaching college.Alfred Brock

The conservancy is doing a great job of revamping the buildings and in creating an environment which allows children to advance in their educational journey. Need building to be updated ot restored. Fire Hazzard prevention needed. More bathroom on main floor for handicapped and elderly especially theamount of people visiting there. Seat comfortable but very low and main roon dark to fine what aisle your seated in. More assitance need from ushers or attendants.Seen a lot of people struggling to get up out of their seats. Incline of lane inside very steep in main floor. Accident could happen due to steep incline. Usher need to be more accommodate and be more helpful to paying customer to their seats. This restored building is beautiful and the show was so great. The staff was absolutely wonderful and gave us some history on the building, very friendly. Tip check on other events in the area as parking designated for the Detroit Opera House was used by those attending the nearby events. If there is something big make sure to get there extra early and don't plan to be able to leave real soon as traffic from 2 events was crazy.Lisa Sutphen

Detroit opera should be ashamed of themselves. Went to go see Malcolm x payed 17$ for water and almonds. They wouldn’t let us into the theatre with our snack! People were rushing to eat their food at the intermission. 100$ for ticket $17 for food and 20$ for parking all for Detroit opera not to respect patronage. DSA is a great school for young scholars. The Principle (Dr. Reynolds) is great at accomadating your specific situation. Whatever that may be, she will do what it takes to assure your child has what they need to succeed here. They focus on majors (art, broadcasting, singing, etc.) You must complete an audition and hold a certain GPA to be excepted into the school; and the kids must maintain that GPA to stay. High expectations. If you have a young talented person, who earns good grades, this is the school for them. The staff is always helpful and the lunch room is beautiful. Our experience at DSA is great so far, my daughter could not have chosen a better school. She's in her last year and although she already has enough credits to graduate, DSA allows their students to stay and keep adding to those credits. Which is great. She'll graduate with 26.5 credits. Gotta love that. As long as you're willing to work for it, Success is easy to find at DSA.Monica Overton

WARNING! Beware of this school! This school is one of the worse High Schools in the Detroit area. Children at this school full on bully students and send a gang of students to one another up. Very unsafe environment. Second their assistant principle is a little racist. I highly reccommend sending your child to a better school especially if they are stating as a Freshmen. This school is also terrible with handling bully issues and students also sell drugs around the school. They act like its a great school when in reality its just another inner city school where children are around drugs, violence, racist assistant principle and terrible administration. Terrible and Unfortunate After my child's experience at this school i decided to make an online review. I give this school a rate of 1/5. This school is not what it seems to be. The staff is going to tell you that this is a great school for your child because they have a opportunity to learn their academics and perform their arts. Well it turns out that's the biggest lie in history. This school is DPS school which is one of the school with the LOWEST QUALITY LEARNING. My child started before at a straight A student and came out 9th grade year and a semester of 10th grade year as a failing student. This school is a JOKE. A JOKE. Absolutely beautiful building! Bring your strongest arms for opening the big brass doors! Parking is credit card only in the open lot (approx $3 for 30 mins during the day); and the box office does not validate due to no staff in parking booth, so bring a card! I was there to stop by the Fisher Theatre box office (always trying to avoid giving Ticketmaster money), and the staff was incredibly helpful and kind! GO SEE THIS!! Another amazing example of guilded age craftsmanship. The Geodesic panels to the archway sayings to the brass centerpiece that so many feet have shuffled across. There also is a great old underground hallway to The Cadillac Building entrance- which you can’t get into – but still super cool to see.Tony Rudy

Hi I went here for 4 years I always thought the course work was be-hide when actually I was more College like than I thought. In my biology 100 I was one of the only people who knew what was happening and same with precalc. middle school was a really dark time for me and going to arts help not be a shy kid anymore. It made me realize how happy I was there I dislike the college I am at now because I miss the diversity of other people so I’m trying to switch if I didn’t go to arts I don’t think I would be happy. My daughter was heading down the wrong path in her middle school. She felt alone, like an outsider, bullied. I found this school and within the first week I could see a huge change in her emotions, her confidence went through roof. she's No longer the outsider just trying to make it through the day. she's a student looking forward school next week. Lovely, older theater on campus of Wayne State University. Relatively smaller venue compared to most downtown theaters, but the space has great sight lines all around, and good acoustics. The stage, seating and performance areas appear to have been updated in recent years, though the lobby and restrooms are of a design that looks to be from about the 1920s, with granite floors in the restrooms (likely similar flooring underneath the lobby's green carpet). Seats are comfortable for me at 6’1” with spacious aisles. Enjoy the performance!Trooper Long

Attended "Everybody" last night. Whatever the script was trying to say was totally lost as far as I am concerned. I was confused throughout, waiting for things to come together and make some sense or some point, but it never happened. I have seen many enjoyable productions at the Hilberry, but this was a poor choice. Maybe this was altered from the written script in order to fit the time slot. Saw "Fairview," our first time at the Detroit Rep. Maybe the best theatrical experience we've had in Detroit in our 25 years here. The actors were all top notch but Tamara PiLar was extraordinary, grabbing the audience with her first entrance and working her final speech brilliantly to drive one of the play's themes home. The theater itself is well-worn but in good shape. The auditorium is relatively intimate so that the actors do not need or use mics, which are so often problematic and distracting. When we read reviews of the New York and London productions of "Fairview", we found that the characters who were supposed to be members of the audience were just heard as voices conversing over the sound system, but the space at the Detroit Rep was small enough that Director Will Bryson could place the actors in the front row and they could be heard throughout the auditorium. Very effective. We'd not been attracted to Detroit Rep productions previously because while they sounded intellectually interesting, they also sounded theatrically bland, but the "Fairview" was brilliant in all aspects. Pro tip: Mac and cheese and mimosas are available at the Sunday matinee. Highly recommend.Brian Connery

Unbelievable. Yes, it is unbelievable that I don’t come here more often. Great shows, convenient location, a LOBBY BAR and affordable. The show was thoughtful and professional with many subtle touches throughout. The pre and post show experience is also pretty impressive. It bears mentioning that the parking is free, on-site and secure, try to find that at any other venue. Attended a concert for a fun ladies night out. Would return for any event just to stare at and admire the architecture and decor. The staff would very welcoming. I ended up snagging some earplugs to protect my already declining hearing. The information desk had a whole box of earplugs available. These were separate from the sensory bags that are available on a first come first serve basis. I believe the bags contain noise canceling headphones, fidget devices and a few other goodies. I don’t know how accessible friendly the venue is. I know it is accessible and they do go out of their way to be helpful. I saw a couple people in mechanized wheelchairs. There are huge elevators and the bathrooms seemed large enough to easily maneuver. #monstax #foxtheatreAmy F

We had the best time at the Fox Theatre! Not a great concert because we were supposed to see 4 bands but only 2 played. Not cool. Spinners and Blue Notes played. But advertised more. Couldn't get our money back so we went. We had the Dinner Suites and they were the best! Try to get these tickets for any concert at the Fox. You get dinner, a private server, bar, etc. My Love and I enjoyed each other's company. Well Only get these tickets for the Fox. Not the Foxs fought. You can feel the history when you walk in!! The employees are so polite!!! To think its been around for 94 years The chairs are a little stained but they look like part of the story the walls could tell! I had the best time ever! It would have been nice to have seen more people dress up some but that didn’t take away from how special it get to just sit and look around and take in all the history! We came to see Broadway in Detroit's My Fair Lady. Parking is next to the opera house and easily accessible. The grand building is beautifully restored. Ushers politely show you to your seat and the performances are wonderful. The theater is loud and the actors act, sing, and dance their way into your heart. Bravo.Sarah Smith

I took my son to go see the Lion King. It was a wonderful experience for both of us. We really enjoyed ourselves and can't wait for the next exciting event! The Detroit Opera House is truly an exquisite building. Staying downtown, it was a short 12 minute walk. We took in the Life & Times of Malcolm X. The venue, despite being initially overwhelming from its many entrances and being generally massive, is amazing! From their staff to acoustics, I really loved this venue, and that's not always the case with giant arenas like this. Every seat here is a good one, whether you're in the pit or high up above. I saw MCR at the beginning of the month and then Panic a few days ago, and let me say, the staff here rock. Both experiences were different, but in good ways. We'd never been to LC before, so initially walking in it was a little dizzying trying to figure out where exactly to go. We didn't know what floor they were on, how to find our seats period, and staff were very on top of this. At each entrance checkpoint to get to your level, people were positioned there to check your ticket and guide you along the way. They made it very easy to get around. For Panic, we had VIP and the whole process was very smooth. The staff working the lounge during the Panic at the Disco VIP were also stellar. The food provided was quite good, everyone was very friendly. Excited to come back in the future for more events! 🙂Grey K

Love goin to shows here! Never had any issues! I remember seeing twenty one pilots here in 2018 I believe. The staff was very nice and moved all the GA into its own area before the show. The beer gardens I think it was? It was very nice because we got numbers on our hand and we could just walk around this area, buy merch, eat, chill, and use the restrooms. Detroit is really lucky to have Little Caesars Arena. It’s a great place for sports – there isn’t a bad seat in the house for a Red Wings or Pistons game. The arena is also a fantastic venue for concerts and shows. The production is flexible enough to allow for some creative and impressive setups. All my interactions with staff have been very positive. It's a nice academic school with a good education system, but the kids are too rowdy and the teachers barely try to keep the noise down. A lot of kids exclude others in lunch, and seemingly tease others also. I would recommend this school only for academic purposes, otherwise I would choose a different school!angie

This review is based on the customer service, ELIZABETH is the very least pleasant to deal with, it’s like talking to a wall, as a manager she needs to work on her customer relations skills! The staff at the front desk aren’t very welcoming, sometimes when you walk in, they might greet you if they aren’t gossiping amongst one another. One day AquaTots decided to call me within 15 minutes of my sons class and I was already 5 minutes away, my commute is a 35 minute drive, I was upset and I was not just going to accept an apology for the inconvenience cuz they hold the standard for customers to cancel at least within an hour but they can cancel within 15 minutes? No! I had to talk to two different managers and they finally refunded me for that class they canceled. I recently put in my 30-day notice, my last day to be April 22nd, the waiver signed says if there are 5 weeks in the month that a bonus class can be scheduled as long as the bonus class doesn’t fall on a day that they are closed! My bonus day should have been April 29th! But They emailed me telling me to reschedule April 15th since they are closed that Friday for Easter weekend, the date got pushed to April 29th, Elizabeth is trying to say that I got my bonus day because of that, which is not the case cuz my son only has 4 classes this month instead of 5 still! 4/15 was NOT my bonus day, it was a regular scheduled day that got canceled cuz of Easter. I’be emailed the owner, let’s see if the owner is any better than her/his staff.Mami Cle

Before my first visit I was told to arrive approximately 30 minutes before my son's scheduled swim lesson. When I arrived and went to the desk one young lady was on the computer and I patiently waited for the second young lady to finish playing on her phone before finally being greeted. I told her that it was our first visit and someone said they were going to show me around. She pointed to the back area of the facility and stated to me everything is back there. I became very irritated because I showed up earlier than I needed to for no reason. Inside the changing rooms the seats were dirty and the floors were wet. Not one time did I see anyone cleaning up or mopping the areas. As we were waiting, I seen other people giving tours to the other families. I asked the young lady who had the glasses on if they pick and choose who they give tours to. And I told her what happened and she was very apologetic even though she shouldn't have made excuses for her other coworkers behavior. I appreciate her being considerate and empathetic though. If I valued their time to show up early like they asked me to the least they could was value my time as well and show me around. My son was attending 2 classes per week & had many makeups available to use. We had to go on vacation for a month so I called aquatots to keep the account on hold and confirmed to charge for the month he returns & scheduled classes and they sent me a confirmation email for rescheduling. Now when I called they tell me to re enroll as they overbooked those spots by mistake. And the makeup classes I can use only if I pay $10 /month if I am not enrolling him back. @aquatots this is bad on your side you have overbooked and removed our schedule and trying to charge for those makeup classes which we paid already. Brian is a great teacher! He literally pulls you out of your comfort zone when it’s comes to acting. We have a great time and I get nothing but positive energy from my classmates. After learning the Chubbuck technique, I can now identify objectives when I’m reading scripts. Also, my acting is no longer acting when I’m using the Chubbuck technique, it’s real. I’m no longer just reading a script but now I am connecting these stories with people in my real life. You can read about any acting technique but you cant get it right if you dont have the right understanding of the technique. Brian Taylor did a perfect job helping me explore and discover new things about myself while demonstrating the 12 step Chubbuck technique. The workshop with Brian benefited me a lot and made me a confident actor in terms of dissecting the script and scene to play the character. I really enjoy taking Brian Taylor acting class. He is an amazing acting coach. The technique we are learning in class is definitely helping me improve my acting skills and technique. I cannot even begin to express how terrible my experience has been with this company. Even the manager, Jordan made for an unpleasant, unappreciated experience when trying to solve a scheduling conflict that they created. I have two kids enrolled at the Sterling Heights location, and when they graduated my son from one level to another they did not have any classes available that worked for our schedule moving forward. This is a problem because my children are 3 years old, 18 months and I'm due with baby number 3 in less than 8 weeks. As a full time working mom, I also can't split my kids between two days – that's just not feasible and it isn't what we signed up for. After charging my card early, even after me repeatedly asking her not to, I am now forced to send my kids there for another month. I've never felt forced to send my kids anywhere before – but apparently money is more important than a company doing the right thing. It just blows my mind that something like this could even happen. Long story short – this company only cares about their bottom line. They are completely unaccommodating and will go to any lengths necessary to make sure they enforce their "contracts".. otherwise they will threaten "legal action", over a breach of that contract and $200 monthly fee for different classes that we can't make fit into our schedule.Bobbie Brandenburg

I Am Very Unhappy With The Service Im Being Provided. My Family transferred and has been at this location for a month and I’m still having the same problems. I’ve spoken to someone face to face 3 times now and nothing has changed. I feel like my money is being wasted and I’m not being taken serious as a customer. When I transferred my son to this location his swim card started over and went from getting stars in the ADVANCED column to being completely empty and started over. I have brought this issue to the staff attention multiple times now. I feel Both ME AND MY CHILD are being ROBBED. My son isn’t being taught properly due to incorrect chart and I’m not getting my money worth due to lack of caring by staff. I’m about ready to just pull my child from the program and take my business else where even though that wouldn’t matter to the Aqua Tot Company One Bit. I did a trial lesson today with my 6 yr old. She was in a group with an 11 yr old, and a 2.5 yr old. That is far too big of an age gap for me to feel confident and comfortable with. Regardless of what level they are in, I feel like the kids would do better with others similar in age, and to keep the age groups limited to 3-4 year age gaps max (so 2.5, 3 & 4 then 5, 6, 7, 8, and then 9, 10, 11, & 12 yr). While she seemed to enjoy the instructor, I got no feedback or interaction from the instructor, I turned in the "new lesson card" and was immediately asked to sign up, parking lot sucked (I do understand it is under the plaza to maintain, but why have 15 minute parking outside the facility when lessons are 30 minutes long), the support beams around the pool are rusting (I do understand chlorine causes rust, but Goldfish has been in location longer without rust).Alexanderia Keyosky

Before working with Jill, we were all highly anxious, trying to learn how to communicate and work well together, while supporting and creating a safe space for our pup to settle into. Our pup had lots of trauma, abandonment, and aversive training. This left her scared, reactive, and anxious most of the time. With Jill’s help, we learned ways to best support our pup will helping her unlearn and relearn behaviors and skills, while building her confidence in so many different arenas. Jill has supported us “pup parents” just as much as she has our puppy. Without Jills science-based knowledge we would be in a very different space than we currently are! Jills training strategies and techniques take time, consistency, and presence, but we have seen incredible brain-based changes in our dog without having to use any of the more common cures that pet owners use to abruptly change behaviors. Jill herself is an absolute delight to work with. She is easy to communicate with, highly responsive to questions, concerns, and everything in-between. Our pup absolutely adores Jill (not only because she brings cheese + treats!), and even though our pup isn’t necessarily trusting of most strangers, Jill took the time to make appropriate introductions, and build trust and a true relationship with our dog, ensuring that our pup was comfortable and within her threshold of tolerance. Since working with Jill, us pup parents and our sweet pup are THRIVING! Our pup went from barking and being afraid of pretty much everything, to being able to hear or see “scary” things and remain calm and relaxed. Jill helped us learn how to work with our dog to increase her confidence and lower her daily stressors to create more optimal conditions for her to let her true personality out. There are still days where things are challenging, but through the guidance Jill continues to provide, even after finishing our lessons, as well as the skills we learned during our lessons we are all much better equipped to handle whatever situations we may find ourselves in! I am a dog trainer who needs help with trimming my own dog’s dewclaws, and I thought of Jill right away. It was easy to schedule an initial session with her. I admit that I was nervous about getting feedback and whether I would be a good student, but Jill was reassuring and offered clear instructions and supportive feedback throughout the session. Jill asked thoughtful questions that helped me reflect on my history with my dog. Once we started training, I immediately felt a sense of relief as Jill talked me through each step. She provided the perfect balance of instruction and choice, helped me identify how my dog was doing while I was juggling all of my materials, and cheered for our successes. By the end of our meeting, my dog was wagging her tail when the nail trimmers were presented! It’s amazing how hopeful I felt after just our first short session. Jill is an exceptional, present and understanding trainer. I first worked with her in a group setting when Diesel, my reactive German Shepherd was an 8 month old puppy. Those classes helped him gain confidence and build some of the behaviors that made my life easy ( “go to your bed”, “down stay”, “paws up”, and “find it”) We recently took Jill’s 4 week training program since it got really hard to go on walks with Diesel, who decided carts/strangers in baggy clothes and other dogs are evil. She not only helped Diesel associate his triggers with treats, fun and all good things, she also taught us how to be good dog parents. Best part about my whole experience with Jill is how well she breaks down her approach so that I know how to help him build good behaviors. We went from fearing walks to enjoying them. We were there in Fall of 2019. Our hotel’s breakfast closed early so, we walked down the street to The Dime. There was a wait but it was well worth it. Great service, great food, cool atmosphere and friendly owners. Our family group of six were well treated and everyone enjoyed our food. The only drawback would be that it is not a very big place but they make up for it with charisma.DMK
