20 Best Acting Programs In Charlotte, NC (2022 Updated)

Let's be honest, there are good things and bad things to this school. While the department the major I have is very small and thus more personal with you, especially with advising, the bigger departments like business are very impersonal with you, and hold rather strict barrings on until you complete the, to be honest, useless general education the college forces on you, though that is the case anywhere in America. It is almost arrogant in how they dismiss the ideas and opinions of the students in favor of their own. They are also known for their excessive penny pinching. With the prices on campus being outrageous, they also hold strict rulings for housing and parking, giving you hefty bills if you mess up on even the slightest infraction. Overall, the grand and upcoming productions they are doing with the school, such as the football field and new dorms and buildings, do not help the general student population much. Now, with this said, there are good things to this place. For one, in smaller departments, you get a generally more personal and kinder attention to you and your college career. With my department at least, as long as you show the ability, they help you get the classes you want and need. Also, at least on campus, school spirit runs deep with the green and gold. There are more than enough events to bolster this said school patriotism, and can eventually come to rival other schools. Also, while some professors have a tendency to stuff beliefs down the student's throats, others can be thought inspiring, and can be interesting and even fun to go to classes sometimes. However, the lousy administration still lingers over these benefits, and hampers the overall quality of the school. If they fixed that problem, they would be a good school. However, with that said problem, I can only recommend it, as a current student, as a mediocre to slightly above average at best school to prospective students. To them, I would look at your options and see if you want to come here. I do not regret the choice of coming to this school, but I cannot ignore its blatant and crippling flaws.Drunk Farmer

If you have a lot of money, or you're a research student or engineer, you probably won't have a problem with this school. The school looks very nice on the outside, but as a student, I hated it. The dorms were god awful. Their elevators did not work on the first day of move in. At one point they did not have enough rooms in the highrises for the students, and had to house students in the commons rooms and blackout the windows. The Cafeteria food was always questionable. Cold and pretty unimaginative. Facilities and services always closed down early. There was hardly anything open on the weekends. Not to mention there is barely any means of going anywhere outside of campus if you don't have a car. Speaking of cars, parking services is ridiculous and incompetent. They wrote me up even when I had my parking tag right on the windshield, positioned properly where it was supposed to be, and another time I got a ticket after the semester had ended! This school just looks for ways to nickel and dime students. They're department chairs and coordinators are a bunch of fools who can't manage their jobs. And when they make mistakes, you are the one who will probably end up paying for it.Eric Williams

I went to UNCC back in the mid to late 90s. All I can say is if I had a time machine, I'd love to go back. I met several life-long friends that I continue to hang out with to this day. It's amazing how much the campus has changed over the years. The last time I was there (for the first football game) I almost got lost. I received a fine arts degree and have made a career out of digital printing and design. According to other reviews, people still like to go home on the weekends. That was also the case when I attended, but for the brave that stay around the school during the weekend, more power to you. That's where the fun is really at. Also, I'm hearing that students aren't attending the football games and the ones that are, tend to leave early. All I have to say to that is, just be glad you have a football team. We were so sports deprived back in the day, we would go to all the basketball and baseball games. Good times!Chad Milburn

*This review is in regards to their summer intern housing program* Queens must be the most incompetent organization I have ever dealt with. Of a group of five friends, they managed to "mistransfer" two of our contact information into their database – they messed up 40% of our applications! (Oh, and they they "misassigned" a third to the wrong room). While I wasn't too upset to learn that I lost my spot, even contacting them about my refund proved difficult since they don't answer their phone during business hours. If you're going to apply for summer intern housing at Queens, make sure to put in a few applications elsewhere.Alex Hoffman

The nursing program is bad. Less than half of the students that start at Queens for nursing end up graduating. Most people fail out of the program. You need at least a 77 to pass your classes and they will not help you if you’re 0.1 away from passing. If you fail a class, you can only retake it once and you will be delayed a semester because you can only take that one class. If you fail two classes, you’re out. It’s a very expensive school and not worth your time. They have a HESI exam that counts 10% of your grade and it’s really hard and you can’t study for it. MSN-CNL online degree program was an extraordinary graduate nursing program. The professors were top rate, requiring excellence at all times and were superb at instructing through an online platform supported by faculty specifically assigned to assist the full time working professional. This school subjected me, and countless other black students, to verbal and sometimes physical racial attacks. I would never recommend this school for black children, children of color, nor families interested in the best education for their children. The administration across all three schools made it clear that my black experience (and those of other black students) was nowhere near their priorities in terms of bettering campus. Enjoyed my visit to the Harvey B. Gantt Center for African-American Arts + Culture. I love the architecture of this building. It's located off South Tryon Street in Uptown Charlotte, NC. The tickets are inexpensive and there is free, off the street parking available. The host was very nice and informative. They currently have 3 exhibits Visible Man: Art and Black Male Subjectivity, FuturePresent: Acquisition Highlights from the Permanent Collection, and Reflections of a People: Photographs from the Archive of Jamel Shabazz. I enjoyed the unique pieces by Radcliffe Bailey and Ernest Shaw. Some of the captiviting photos by Shabazz give you a glimpse of Black culture in New York around the 1970s and early 80s. All amazing exhibits with great pieces that embody the Black culture. Great experience.Jabarrus Jones

February was my first time visiting the Harvey B. Gantt Center. I thoroughly enjoyed my visit. Although small the 3 exhibits were beautiful and intriguing! The art speaks for itself and the pieces selected for each exhibit were well selected. It was a great way to celebrate Black History Month and I am glad Ashley and Yelp selected this event for the elites to experience! The building was beautiful on the inside and very clean. They have a very nice gift shop located on the first floor with lots of items from Black owned businesses, lots of items affordable also. The ticket counter and one exhibit is located on the 2nd floor and the 2 other exhibits are located on the 3rd floor. The 4th floor is used for events I believe. I was mostly excited to visit this museum to learn more about art that represents my culture. I was disappointed. There is very little artwork. There were several empty canvases on the wall. It took approximately five minutes to view the couple of galleries they have. I wanted to give this museum positive reviews because I really want to support African American artists. This college has made a terrible impression. They got me admitted as a transfer student, and I have been preparing for the Fall session online, but to appear in person, and I just found out I missed the registration deadlines because student advising never got back to me. I took the new student orientation and the professor, just skimmed through all the info. There wasn't time for questions, and she cut it short by 30 minutes. It didn't even explain how to register online. I had been in communication and prepared for this session but didn't understand how to register so all the classes I had 'added to my schedule' weren't actually registered, and no one followed up with my questions. I thought I was registered, and even as I try to register now after the fact, it still says I need student advising which no one ever got back to be except for an email to say I already had everything set up. I am torn about this. Now I have to wait another session to get started?! NO! I will take my education somewhere where I can actually get assistance. This is such an emotional drag.Gabrielle Flores

This place is amazing for kids! It’s a huge library with very cool decorations and themes. There are sections for each age with activities and games for kids to play and just be occupied. Sometimes they have theater shows, reading time, games and exhibits for you to participate or check out. There’s bathrooms and place to relax and have a snack. And it’s all free! There is free parking in the parking deck but it’s super small. So can be hard to find a spot. Overall it’s a great place to take your kids for sure!!!Tu Gray

Lots of books for kids and teenagers, fun small play area kind outside. This entrance is free unless you want to get some books etc. Lot of science activities for kids like magnets, books along with other play stuff. Definitely recommend going here, if you wanted to go during busy time I would recommend going by train as the station was literally next door.Rakesh Nara

What a wonderful library and places for kids. I was visiting a friend in town, and as she has a newborn and knows how much I love the library, she said we needed to go. It did not disappoint. After 2020 and the beginning of 2021, I wasn't sure there was anything that could brighten my days. That all changed the day I started taking classes at CATCh. Even though I started out absolutely terrified and never thought I could do improv, it has turned into one of my very favorite things. Every time I leave class, I leave with a huge smile on my face and with so much energy it's hard to fall asleep. It's that fun. I've also learned so many valuable skills that I use in my corporate job every day. This is better than any public speaking course or team building exercise I've been through. The confidence you learn is unmatched. If you're scared like I was, don't worry. The teachers at CATCh lead with empathy and compassion. They have created a safe place that is inclusive and not cutthroat at all. I've met so many cool new friends. And those are just the classes! I love spending Saturday nights laughing at the improv shows! There are so many talented and hilarious performers, and I've enjoyed adding these shows to mix up my social life. Another plus- the theater is a quick walk from popular spots like Olde Mecklenburg Brewery and Queen Park Social, if you want to grab pre or post drinks! I just completed CATCh's 6 week beginner level 1 improve class 'Unclocking The Self'. I have never done improv or any stage work, the thought of doing something like that was very intimidating, BUT I was looking for something fun, different and challenging. The class was outstanding, it was everything I hoped for, and more, and was one of the best things I have ever done as an adult. We were 13 students, and 2 instructors: Kevin Shimko, who is one of the theatre's founders, was the lead, and Mary was our student teacher. Both were superb. Each week focussed on a different theme, with each class building on what we did the prior week, allowing us to progress through the different skills that make improv so much fun. Kevin has a phenomenal ability to teach, to help each student expand their comfort zones, and to help the class connect and build chemistry. Several of us have already signed up for the level 2 class. I highly recommend doing this class, especially if thinking about it scares you, it will be one of the best decisions you have ever made. I just finished level 2 and the student show here and I can’t recommend starting with level one (or even just swing a show) enough! The classes had challenged me and taught me lessons that I could take back into my personal life. I made new friends and can’t count the laughs that came with it. Eagles wings has really helped me step out of my shell and not care about what others think of me because in the end, “the person who makes a fool out of them self always has more fun.” Their program is something you might not expect to be so good and professional. The teachers are some of the best and funniest people you’ll meet, and I learned that even if it takes a while you will become friends with pretty much everybody there, and I wouldn’t trade those friendships for the world. My voice has improved big time, and I’ve learned so much from the program, and have grown so much in many different ways because of it. I’ve gotten the best advice from eagles wings and would recommend this to anybody who’s thinking about stepping into the musical theatre world. Eagles’ Wings is the most incredible program I have ever been apart of. The teachers are all spectacular at what they do, and pour so much applicable instruction and love into all of the students. Eagles Wings Studio is the reason I fell in love with musical theatre and participate in it today. Their high-quality productions are brought to life through wonderful song and dance taught by experienced teachers, and performed by dedicated and talented students. When I joined, I had no experience whatsoever in the world of theatre. However, through the fantastic training provided by the teachers, I have become a confident singer and dancer over the span of my school year. I had high hopes because of the good reviews I read. So even if I had to drive my child half hour to this center I still did it. Teachers should avoid comparing the student with other students in terms of focus or learning curve. Unrealistic expectations for a child who has only been there for 3 sessions. There will be notes that will not be remembered from last week’s lesson and that should be forgivable in my opinion. I came here for my child to have fun while learning music as an art. Saying something to my child like “we already talked about it” or “you should know this already” over and over as the child struggles to remember the notes from last weeks’ lesson is not at all helping. Or “use your eyes” in finding the note or being called “rude” when the teacher gets interrupted. I think it’s a little bit harsh. There are other ways to say those things to a student who just started to learn music. Families have different priorities and practicing piano every day might not be at the top of the list to many people, like us, but this does not mean that the child does not enjoy their piano lesson.Melrose W.

We have been at Onstage for 8 months. 3 of my kids take lessons there – for drums with Logan, piano with Amanda, and classical guitar with Mario. I cannot say enough wonderful things about their instructors. They are talented musicians, themselves – and not only do they know their instrument well, but know how to read music well and they teach my kids how to read music. On top of that, they are amazing with my kids – patient, encouraging, kind, and funny – they know how to keep the kids on task without them getting bored. I have sat in with the kids for their lessons multiple times, and the teachers always welcome a parent in the room. They challenge my kids and celebrate their successes. My kids always look forward to their lesson:) The owners, Chris and Hannah, are also very wonderful people and they extremely flexible with any schedule changes. We are overjoyed with Onstage. They took a chance on our 7 yr old who has a passion for guitar and music in general. All of the other schools in town refused to teach him so youngn in his chosen instrument, but Onstage gave him a trial lesson. Once our son met with Joey, there was no looking back. I signed my son up at Intro when they opened in February. I was a little wary about a brand new agency. But at the audition I quickly learned that the team had almost 10 years in the business and an extensive resume. I went home, did some research and then decided to sign my son. Since February we have been on dozens of auditions and have booked a commercial for a local children's boutique, a print ad in a magazine, a print ad in a store circular, a small extra role in a tv pilot and and a handful of fashion shows. Honestly, considering we are new to this and my son has no experience, this is way more than I was expecting. Our whole family is so proud and we are excited to see what comes next.I was a skeptic about this entire industry actually, but Intro has made me a believer. If I could select 0 stars then I would. For those who are new to modeling, please wait until you have all the information you need before signing this agency. I was basically talked to like I was dumb. I just wanted to confirm information before proceeding. They didn’t even show any sympathy towards me. They simply told me to look on the website and that the website is working fine. The manager was extremely rude. She didn’t even respond to my email. They stated that my deadline was 2/27 yet I didn’t receive the offer until 2/23. They give you five days to accept an offer. There’s a lot of miscommunication with this company. They don’t even show any concern for you either. So don’t even waste your time, it’s not worth it. I’m very grateful that I missed my deadline and didn’t sign with them.Nalajah Fitzgerald

Charlotte Academy of Music is a great place to learn to play any type of musicial instrument. We discovered Sylvan Mathews about six months ago. What a wonderful find. Our grand daughter has been struggling since pre school, where she started speech therapy. Last year she started kindergarten. Her struggle continued and frustration, mixed with emotions began to prevail at home. I knew we needed help. I reached out to her wonderful school and started getting feedback. This prompted me to contact Sylvan. She was tested at both facilities and was found to have a learning disability. Sylvan has gone above and beyond all expectations. The staff has become an integral part of our village for Ali. The tutors are wonderful and she always leaves with a smile. Tony and Chasity have been fantastic! Going over her IEP from school and contacting them a for meeting to collaborate on Ali's progress. You have and our going above and beyond. My son has been attending Sylvan to relearn some lost skills in vocabulary, spelling and writing. He has been out of high school for a few years and wants to attend our community college. They have done a great job! My son enjoys working with his teacher Josh and feels like he is learning a lot. The staff have been very easy to work with and are flexible in things they can do to help my son. This place is not just for school age children but is also great for adults that need to relearn skills and get academic support for post secondary education. We look forward to Sylvan being an ongoing support for my son as he progresses with college classes. My daughter went to Sylvan for math tutoring. She loved working with Josh and never complained about going. She became more confident in her Math 1 class which was a high school credit course she was taking in Middle School. We had some tragedy in our family that caused her to get behind. The team at Sylvan got her back on track and she received the highest math average award in her class! Lanti Performing Arts is simply put exceptional. Sure, there are other performing arts or music studios out there, but none like what you find here. Every single teacher that I have ever gotten the blessing of learning from has impacted my life and cared about me not only as a performer but as a person. I have been taking voice lessons for many years and got the opportunity to be an apprentice for some of the incredible camps that they host each week of the summertime. It is exciting and inspiring having a community that pushes and challenges you and really does take the time to invest in each individual while providing them with the unique tools and support to succeed. Lanti Performing Arts is awesome for literally any age group and there is always music and laughter bustling through the colorful doors. They recently majorly helped me to prepare for a college audition (which was so meaningful and I could write several more paragraphs about just that). Another facet that really is what sets them apart is their leadership- Mrs. Lantigua is a totally passionate leader who works harder than most people you will ever meet. And Miss Dasha at the front will always make your day when you come in and is a warm and pleasant friend to all. Where do I begin? I've been a student at Lanti Performing Arts for almost 5 years now, and the growth that I have experienced since then is incredible. The director (Mrs. Sarah Lanti) is the most amazing woman, and I don't know where I would be without her. I practically live at the studio, and have taken everything from piano to voice lessons, done countless theatre productions and summer camps, and have been a camp counselor for two years. All of this to say that regardless of what I have participated in at Lanti, I have always received quality education from experienced and qualified teachers who truly care about you and your personal growth. Piedmont School of Music and Dance is a wonderful establishment with highly qualified teachers and ample performance opportunities. It is a high-grade studio for not only learning dance or music, but for growing as an artist and an individual. I danced at this studio throughout high school and improved my technique beyond what I thought possible. The teachers took the time to work with me on areas that were especially difficult, while encouraging me and pushing me to be the best dancer I could be. This school prepared me for dance in college and allowed me to be the president of my dance team at UNC-CH! I am additionally fully confident that the strong work ethic and ability to apply corrections that was instilled in me, helped me to succeed in college, thrive in the work force, and now apply to graduate school. PSMD is the best studio that I have attended in the area for quality training, ample performance opportunities, and cost — and I have been to many studios within a 50 mile radius. My daughter's dance has improved markedly with access to multiple zoom classes per week to make up for the lack in classroom instruction. Yes, I have to work harder, but it has been worth it for us. My daughter was born with a list of medical issues, so we've been missing out on things since she was born due to illness and fear of catching common colds that would cause a hospitalization. We've had the good fortune of being NCT season subscribers for about 8 years. Particularly if you like musicals, NCT's Broadway-worthy productions – ALL of which are created locally by NCT – are consistently excellent and usually fantastic (especially the singing, and Edward G. Robinson's orchestra!). NCT called today to tell me that for the next show, our regular season seats will have an obstructed view for part of the performance due to the unusual arrangement of the sets – and switched us to the best available other seats. I am extremely happy with Virtuoso school of music and art. For a while now, my wife and I have been looking for piano lessons for kids and adults in Charlotte area. Our search has ended when we found Lana's school. Her school is very professional and fun at the same time. Our entire family is taking lessons here. Our daughter who is 10 takes piano and voice lessons. Our son who is 12 takes piano and planning to pick up guitar lessons. My wife and I are taking piano lessons as well. Teachers here are top notch, always clear and patient. Lana herself is very accommodating, very responsive to emails and phone calls. She is always willing to work with us if our schedule slightly changes. I would recommend Lana and her crew to anyone looking for school of music. My 6 year old son has been taking piano classes for 2 years now. After moving into Charlotte and looking for a new instructor I was pleased to find this very private, very disciplined school. My son has been with Diana as his instructor for some time now. I am very thankful to have found such a caring teacher. My son has shown improvement in areas where I thought there couldn't be any. The fluidity of his work shows how much detail Diana puts into her lessons. She makes it fun and easy for him to focus for the entire hour. He looks forward to playing at home more often and I couldn't be happier.Marja Houston

This daycare is a joke! They dont train new hires, they just throw them in to the classroom. Administration for this facility cares more about the way they look for the day, than the quality of care your child receives. They didnt train me to prepare for my class. They threw me in. As they pranced around in their ego's. But the thing that takes the cake is they dont wont to payrheir help. They give them the run around to get what's owed.BEWARE BEWARE BEWARE if they treat their employees this way, imagine how they treat your children. So today is Wed. June 1st. I recieved my pay yesterday. I wasn't feeling good good yesterday so I didnt pay much attention to my pay stub. So as I look at it tonight I realize the pay I was told I'd be making ($16.00 an hr) was dropped to minimum wage. I will be calling the Labor Board tomorrow a d report this. But Be Very Careful If You apply For A Job HERE!!! It's a real shame people to try to take advantage of other people!!!Jan Neal

We are excited to share some notes of our tenure and experience at Forrestal Academy. Our oldest son began at Forrestal in the fall of 2017. He has progressed through the ranks per say and will begin Kindergarten in the fall. Our youngest son began care at the age of 1 and now dances around in the Mice classroom. Admin Team, They are a blessing and have worked with us around many obstacles.  We can not thank them enough for all the support and love throughout our boys tenure at Forrestal Academy. The Teachers, We could not have hand picked care takers for Our boys any better. We are thankful and blessed how they have grown in the classrooms considering the pouring love they all have shown them both and our family. They have impacted our sons in so many positive ways and we are forever in debt to them for that. Chef Jake is the bomb and provides quality and variety that our kids thoroughly enjoy! Forrestal Academy has been such a blessing for our family. Our daughter will be entering Kindergarten in the fall and upon getting her Kindergarten paperwork, we had it confirmed just how great Forrestal is. Our daughter can do all of the things listed (and more) in the skills section of her paperwork for what we should be working with her as she enters Kindergarten. It reminded us what a quality learning center Forrestal Academy is. I had a great time the first time so I bought a package from them. The trainers were affable, and the place was clean. I was 5 minutes late for a training one day and called to inform them. I spoke with Cindy, the owner. She notified me of their policies surrounding me being an a beginner rower and how I would not be permitted into the training session because of how missing the warm-up could pose a safety issue for myself, as a beginner rower? I told her that I was unaware of the late policy and the strict policy surrounding beginner rowers. She went on to explain to me that due to the package I purchased that I had one training session remaining since being late is being applied towards the package deal I purchased, in which I corrected her because I purchased a 3-class training package. I then asked her how many classes must one take to be considered an "advanced" rower to bypass the warm-up and be permitted into the class despite being late. Cindy had the audacity to ask me, "Why did you chose to be late?" And then went on to tell me that a rough number to be considered an advanced rower is to take 10 classes. Overall, I'm disappointed in the owner's improper question and in Rowhouse personnel for failing to notify me of their strict policies surrounding beginner rowers and being late as well as them failing to keep an accurate number of the training classes I have. Thus, I would not be a returning client. I recommend to potential Rowhouse clients to keep track of your training classes because there may be an issue in them miscounting, and last but not least, don't let them question your tardiness.MJ Vang

Fantastic full body workout! Classes last anywhere from 30 to 45 minutes. Expect to sweat a lot … as long as you put in the effort. A class usually consists of 2-3 rounds of rowing and 2 rounds of floor exercises. Weights are used in most of the classes. There is always a coach that guides you through the class. They have a user friendly app that allows you to schedule out weeks in advance. From top to bottom, this gym is top notch! They are extremely COVID conscious. Class size is limited to 12 per class, and everyone is spaced out. You never have to leave your station. Machines and mats are wiped down after every class. Masks are worn until you get settled into your station. There are a few different types of memberships. I am on the unlimited membership. I pay the founders rate of around $119 a month. It’s a month to month membership. They offer the first class for free, so take advantage of it. Tell them Brian sent ya!! You won’t be disappointed.Brian Conlon

I've been a member for over a year now and have never found a workout before this that keeps me so engaged and motivated every time. The coaches and staff are awesome, the classes have great variety and music, and the workout itself is effort-based and low impact. You get out what you out in and it's rewarding! My daughter started classes here over a year ago. It was the first time she suggested her own activity and has stuck with it ever since. My husband and I are not familiar with the entertainment industry so were excited for her but also very intimidated. After the first year, our daughter has blossomed and we are now searching for an agent. She has always loved all of her classes/ teachers. Kamber, the owner, is very supportive through the process once you decide you want to pursue a career in acting. She is very accessible and helps answer all of my questions.
