20 Best 2 Year Nursing Programs In San Diego, CA (2022 Updated)

As a current student at Platt, there have been two things that have really stuck out to me about this college. A big thing I've enjoyed and really noticed at Platt is how incredibly passionate about teaching and the subjects they teach the teachers are. They genuinely care about each and every student and only want what is best for each of us. The teachers also all have industry experience and are only want to teach the most up to date and important stuff to help students succeed after graduation. Another thing I have truly enjoyed about Platt is the family atmosphere the school has. Everyone is always willing to help everyone and the school has a very laid back atmosphere. Despite this though, the school finds ways to push you harder than you've probably ever been pushed. I've learned an incredible amount of valuable knowledge about not just what I'm studying, but also about the industry and life in general. I have attended community college, and a big state school (Ball State) besides Platt and of the three Platt is my favorite, the state school I felt like I was just another student, I meant nothing to the teachers, at community college, the teachers were passionate but they lacked the proper funding to provide us with the proper equipment necessary. Platt provides all the equipment I need to succeed, and the teachers all know my name and make me feel important. This is why I would recommend Platt to anyone interested in the fields of Digital Media and Design.Sean Hunsche

Filmmaking finally feels accessible to me because of Platt College!! I am a Digital Media major focused on video production. Platt took all of my previous credits and is a veteran friendly school that offers a full time, yet flexible schedule. Platt uses hands-on learning to teach editing software like Premiere Pro and After Effects, but also gives students access to industry standard production equipment like a sound recording booth, a green screen room, and an entire equipment room. Each class focuses on the student building a portfolio. I now know how to create amazing special effects and my own industry level sound. And let’s talk about the campus! It’s small, easy to navigate, and parking is ample around the school when the lot is full. The campus has a cool vibe, it’s comfortable, tons of bathrooms, vending machines, and an open door policy with an amazing staff that cares about each student. Seriously, the school director has come to the screening of all of my class’s films! Not to mention the school always does cool, fun little things for holidays. We had a costume contest where winners won ACTUAL CASH, and a Valentine’s Day raffle with doughnuts! I’m so glad I found Platt. I had a great experience at this school, taking home my Associate and Bachelor Degree in three years time! This review though isn't going to be about the school but about a very special person named Celi Yankajtis, Career Services Director. Celi, along with all my teachers, have helped me become successful. Celi, in particular though, has helped me land TWO jobs. One for a startup app company and another recently at a local web marketing firm. I cannot thank her enough for the dedication and care she has for the students and their success. She truly loves her job and truly cares, the proof is with Alumni like myself. She continuously posts job openings in the schools career services job board and always goes above and beyond to help students find work, especially for those students who show the desire to succeed. I warn you though, DO NOT WASTE this woman's time! She truly is there for all the students but if you don't show effort yourself then you are wasting her time which she could be spending on students who want to succeed. I saw The Messiah here on Sunday. Campus is unbelievable and it was wonderful to feel God's presence on a school campus again. The entire production was amazing and I could not have enjoyed it more. It's very worth finding out more about the story of how it was written first, so when you watch it live you'll have a deeper appreciation. Parking is an issue here and make sure you go early when you do. You'll be greeted by a friendly face who can direct you from there. Who could ask for anything more?Kyle Whelehon

A whole lot has changed since I was attending here. The name of the mascot has changed. Also this was called Point Loma Nazarene College. Speaking of changes, one thing that hopefully hasn't changed is the cafeteria food, most college cafeteria food SUCKS…NOT HERE…the food is/was catered by Marriot. Great school for a community college. I heard it’s the best around. Many students come from San Diego or from the North just to go here. They do a lot of things by hand (compared to other schools that do things electronically). The grounds are well kept. The parking is horrible during the beginning of the semester. More parking will be available as time comes. When you register for a class, you need to pay the same day or you get dropped. If you’ve dropped a lot of classes, the school might give you a hold because the classes are impacted. There is a daycare center. Parking permits and books are relatively cheaper than most.Aurora A

Good School. The campus is breath taking. Views of the ocean in the dining hall and surrounding areas. Tons of plants and trees all around, a great variety. Staff are helpful. Parking is a struggle, unless you don't mind parking in dirt lots but then it's not worth buying a parking permit. As for professors and academia, they could improve. Check professors ratings onlines some teach to only one or two learning styles. The classes are pretty easy. Maybe to easy.Michael

I heard that USD is an excellent private university. They have highly accredited teaching, law, technology, language, environmental and psychology schools, as well as a number of others. I also heard that their physical education school is quite good. USD is one of our nation's top rated colleges in regards to higher education and just to get admitted, you must score fairly high on the SAT ( Taking the ACT can always helps too ) and presenting the admissions evaluation committee with a high school GPA that shows that you were in the top percentile of your graduating class is very beneficial; it also helps to have done some volunteer work and to have been on at least one or two high school committees. All of these combined together should help you gain admission to USD. This college is quite competitive-as are most of our best colleges nowadays. Most of USD's professors are seasoned-the best in our country-and very demanding; graduating in four years means a lot of hard work and can be a wearisome task and often taking a couple of summer session classes or a class or two during Christmas break can help one graduate within this time scale. They do offer scholarships however, these are difficult to get and student loans ( Federal Educational Grants can easily surpass fifty-thousand dollars a year! USD's tuition is at the high end of the scale, especially if you live off of campus ( The City of San Diego is amongst the ten highest priced "cost of living" metropolitan areas in the USA ). There are hundreds of nice condominiums, townhouses and apartments within the surrounding area however, the rental rates for a one to four bedroom unit start at about $900 to $1200 per room ( living together ) per month or about $2200 for a two bedroom townhouse/apartment, to $3500+ for a three to four bedroom ; I'm just giving you a general idea…it's a might expensive to live anywhere in San Diego. USD has many of the most beautifully designed buildings in San Diego; architectural masterpieces. Tourists who come to visit San Diego often include this private university in their sightseeing itinerary, as the photographic opportunities around this campus are simply marvelous; especially on a clear winter day from about early afternoon to sunset. They have a small visitors center, as you drive through their main entrance center and if you get lost, you should stop and ask a couple of students and they may be able to help you? There's a lot to see, including San Diego's famed Tecalote State Park, which lies just below the north side of this university.charles chiles

The campus is pretty. The teachers, at least those who are fluent in English, are mediocre, and those whose English language skills are very poor, are token so this campus can brag about being diverse. The dorms are so noisy that it is impossible to do any work in one's own room or get any sleep before 3 a.m. The people responsible for policing the dorms are too lazy and callously indifferent to do anything, and no matter how many complaints are made, it is a nightmare to live in the dirty, smelly and horribly noisy dorms. The religious classes, which are mandatory, are a total waste of time and not based on any accurate facts or historical accuracy. The head of the Student Health Center is dishonest and harmful, willing to smear any student she takes a hatred to. There are no responsible administrative officers to be found if you have a problem. This is not the place if you care about getting a solid and admirable education.Susan Lea

The University accepted my son to the credential program August 2011. After 2 years and more than $32000 in tuition he is not being allowed to do his student teaching because, in the opinion of some professors, he lacks the skills they require. These professionals (who demand that the credential candidates be able to reach and teach all students no matter what their learning styles or disabilities) should be knowledgeable enough to bring out the best in a young man who has wanted to be a teacher since in the seventh grade he was chosen by his teacher to tutor other students in reading. The professionals who are standing in the way of his dream need to evaluate their own teaching. What did they do to ensure my son's success in their program? I've been a student (intermittently) here since 2010. As someone that loves learning and the overall "school" atmosphere, I feel extremely fortunate that I get to be a student at Palomar College; "lucked out", I would say. The teachers are magnificent and have the potential to change your life forever (I know a few that have for me already*). You can get help with enrollment fees with through the BOG Waiver – all my classes end up being free because of it. Parking permits 1/2 off also. The school is modern and always improving. Their buildings are stylish and unlike anything I've seen anywhere else. Each is unique, yet somehow they all come together to form a beautiful campus. I truly look at this campus like a second home. I love going here. (Parking can suck, that's a big reason why I try to only stick to night classes 🤓) ➡️ HOWEVER! They now have a brand new parking GARAGE! I haven't used it yet, as I am only doing evening classes, but I can only imagine how much it helps everyone be able to find parking! It is nice to know that they actually do care about the problems we face throughout college life & do what they can to help make it as comfortable & as enjoyable as possible! UPDATE (3/19/18)!! I started using the parking garage and it is AWESOME!!! Security cameras coming soon! This school keeps on getting better and better!! 'Safety' is also another big thing here that they take seriously. They make sure to inform us students on a regular (& when, if necessary) basis all the details regarding our options when it comes to being and staying safe throughout our education at Palomar. They have their own (actual/legit) police force that is on duty 24/7 & a direct emergency line to call any hour day or night. They provide free escorts to anyone needing or just wanting a little extra piece of mind walking to their car or anywhere around campus. Every class locks from the inside by a button next to the teacher's phone that keeps anyone from getting in in case of an active shooter or anything else putting students at harm, & when they lock, it sends a signal to the Palomar Police with the location of the room, etc. etc. I could go on but you get it, they care & work hard to keep us safe! 🤗 * AJ Professor Jack Hook, AJ Professor Leeyann Chapman, COMM Professor Wendy Nelson & LS Professor Lisa Burns; just to name a few! 😉Courtney Grimshaw

*updated October, 2022* I wish I could warn everyone not to go here. The counselors are almost impossible to get an appointment with, and they make you do some of your own counseling work instead of them helping when it's their job. I had to plan out all my own classes…no one helped me. I also had to figure out which schools accept my AA from palomar because again, the counselors won't help you figure that out. If you have no idea how to do college forms and transcripts, where to start or where to go, DO NOT GO HERE. You will be your own student, teacher, and counselor. *old review below* Now to explain the two stars…as a student here, so far it has been okay. It is pretty hard to make friends on campus and I don't feel like I'm getting enough help from the financial section. I have also asked for help from the counseling department and they told me "you have had too many appointments and we need to save full hour appointments for students who haven't had any." Ummm….okay I understand everyone needs an appointment but to turn away students asking for help? Wow…as I write this review I knocked off stars. The teachers here have been great in my experience; so far I have only had two horrible teachers, Scott Klinger in the photo department and another male teacher who was my math teacher years ago.Alexandra

Keep in mind that you get what you pay for with everything in life. There's a reason it's so inexpensive. On top of that they force their political bias on students in most of their classes. Over my time at Palomar there's been a great deal of times students have to tell teachers what they want to hear for a grade as opposed to what they really believe. This should not be the case and students should have the right to think or believe whatever they want. Also the website where you register for classes is always having different problrms or not working for one reason or another. Also at times it is impossible to contact anyone from the school over the phone. More often then not you have to call 3 or 4 times before anyone is able to get to the phone. There are some genuinely good people and good professors at Palomar. But overall it has not been a good experience for me.Camden Tarico

I'd like to think that because of Covid, there is a lack of help from this college. I have been trying my very best for the last month to do everything myself without the help from any employees at this college. I have not been contacted regarding how to get enrolled, registered, what classes I need, financial aid, etc. I have been struggling since I have submitted my application to this college. You basically have to figure out everything on your own which isn't hard for me to do because I was walked through the steps from my previous college who actually took the time to help me out. While I understand quite a few things, there are some things that I don't understand and that I have questions about but getting into contact with anyone at this college is very difficult. Even through emails, no one responds. This college lacks the skill for helping their future students. I believe that I have done everything necessary in order to be a student but getting in touch with a counselor is the biggest problem. Making an appointment with a counselor via zoom, is quite a struggle and I have messaged quite a few employees at the college but yet, I still haven't received any responses. I am about to give up and just try somewhere else although this college is very convient for me, it's not worth the struggle and hassle at this point. 😔Mary McDonald

Great atmosphere. Their financial aid office needs help though. I started my fasfa around May and I'm trying to get in for the fall. I sat down with the students that help you with the fasfa form online so I don't do it wrong. I had to wait for them to approve it. They told me to bring my parents IRS info, even though I used the retrieval tool. I had to do a dependent verification form. Turned in copies of those. Then asked for my W-2. Then they asked for another verification form. Just constantly asking me for things I turned in. It sometimes takes them weeks to let you know what's next. So I learned the hard way the previous year that they ask for these forms every semester. They didn't tell me until I was applying for another semester. First year student trying to figure them out. I lived in El Cajon when they were asking for forms making this process extra annoying. Apparently they had to restart the process for the new semester. Don't ask me why but this is the most annoying part of school. I advise making multiple copies of whatever they ask for IRS FORMS, W-2, AND TAX INFO. They'll ask for it next semester and start it months before to avoid lines. I'm grateful there is a financial office though or school would be ROUGH! Thank you. EDIT: THEY MOVED TO A 270PERSONAL

City College is represented by the San Diego transit people, MTS, as City College Trolley Station, a cave, possibly Plato's, remarkable for grime and an expansive range of social behaviors not common in the quiet halls of ivy and higher education. The City College Trolley Station, is, of course, the gateway of San Diego's always expanding skidrow that could be seen as starting here and continuing to 25th and Commercial. San Diego and the real estate community promotes skidrow as being the East Village, but it's not really so much a village as it is a refugee camp. And it is getting bigger every day and will one day engulf all of downtown and possibly as far into the neighborhoods as Hillcrest and North Park. I've been a at USU for a year now working on my Masters in Nursing and my FNP, and I really love the whole experience ( well, except the lack of sleep from working full-time and staying up late to do homework!). There is no slacking! These professors are on top of it! The curriculum is challenging, and every class is laid out in such an organized structured way so you know what to expect. I received my Bachelors in Nursing from Clemson University and I have to say, I much prefer the close friendships, and friendly caring teachers at USU. Even though we are from all over the United States, I feel more connected than I ever did sitting in a classroom once a week and missing work. This program is definitely doable while working full time. Did I mention challenging? But the professors are truly the VERY BEST!! The system is user friendly, and I encourage anyone sitting on the fence, to get off and get your degree! We have a major nursing shortage which is projected to worsen over the next few years, we need you!!!Cynthia Strader

PLEASE STEER CLEAR and opt for a non-profit institution instead. The application process was absolutely terrible. I was working with Troy to apply to the teaching credential program. He gave me a list of items to complete, and was unable to have my transcripts reviewed to waive the CSET (I have an undergrad degree in the subject better before turning them in. I finally completed my application and was told I’d get a decision within two days. Two days later I checked in and still no decision and was also given false information about financial aid by an enrollment officer. I checked in again and still no decision made. I check in again and they tell me there’s a glitch in the system and my application was never processed even though Troy told me it was being processed. Even after the semester has started, I’ve yet to receive any decision. This has NEVER happened to me in the past but I’ve also only attended non-profit institutions.Beliuye

OMG…please run far and away from this school. They are disorganized. They mess up on your student accounts and you ending up owning more than what you signed up for. They screwed up my student loan and now they left me with a $15,000 bill left to pay on my own. I've had nothing but headaches from this school. They don't try to help. Two years ago I had the good insight of enrolling in Concorde's PTA program. The program is run by knowledgeable Physical Therapists invested in quality education (Mary, Sam, Laura, Kelly, Dennis). They provided me with the necessary tools to start a new career and enter the work force feeling competent with my skills. The school has a department dedicated to assist graduates find a job, Alvy has personally helped me with this, he even rendered a mock interview so that I would show up to a possible employer as a strong and coherent candidate. Because the program is so well organized (from prerequisites to clinical rotations and even when/how to signing up for your board test!) it is easier to have a balance school/personal life. And when you approach the school, Karl, the security officer at the entrance, is the most welcoming and kind person that will ever open a door for you.Yawi Griffini

My experience at Concorde has truly been astounding. I joined the Medical Assistant program and my teacher Ms Tameka was nothing short of a great instructor. She was very patient, compassionate and dedicated to ensuring that every student learned even if it meant staying late or adapting the way she presented materials.The Financial staff Eva and Peetee were very efficient in handling my paperwork so that I could dedicate my focus to studying and be successful. Upon completion my graduate employment specialist Rocky was a true rockstar. I had no faith in using their services but this guy was very helpful in making sure my resume was top notch and that I was interview ready and confident enough to land jobs and ask for the money I deserved. I attended Concorde Career College for the Medical Assistant Program and after completing, I am now a graduate!. After completing my externship, Rocky Ramirez who is our graduate employment specialist assisted me with my resume and employment opportunities. Not only was Rocky very helpful but he goes above and beyond on ensuring that his students are fully prepared for the next step. This is a great school. I would definitely recommend this college to anybody wanting to learn about Chinese medicine as well as massage and acupuncture techniques. School feels very complete and the staff is very knowledgeable. It's exciting to work with such professional teachers and to learn so much that's such an accelerated rate. I personally am very excited to attend this school and would recommend it to anybody that is looking to become certified and massage or acupuncture and so much more. The facilities are generally pretty clean and well-kept as well as stocked pretty well. The library is full of so much material that you can't really find anywhere else. Student alumni have a lot of ability for employment as well as Clinic hours. I've noticed that a lot of our teachers are former students themselves and I think that says a lot about the school. The dean is a very Hands-On open door policy type of professional. And the students are really wonderful people and it has been a pleasure to work with such ambitious people. They do also have a bookstore and a small Cafe where you can get all of your reading material as well as a bite to eat. They are very covid compliant even post-plandemic. And I think it's really amazing how they have set the school up so that many different medical facilities are represented on campus. I'm very excited to continue my education here as well as very grateful for this opportunity. Student Clinic played a very important role in my health and well Being. I went there with a Thyroid problem, namely a goiter, and wanted to avoid surgery. I went there for about 8 months continuously and learnt so much about the Acupuncture way of healing and dealing with the body. Students worked on me, supervised by well seasoned teachers. I was the kind of person who likes to learn and empower myself in taking care of my well being. They did not hesitate to answer my questions and guide as they did the treatments. I suggest to always have it be a two way street. Engage in the process. Do not just lay there and leave but ask questions and make sure that you're learning and empowering yourself into this holistic way of looking at the body and health. I loved it. I am so grateful. Also, I could afford it better. Students always friendly and doing their best because they are learning and want to strengthen their skills and be the best. I started coming here about 3 months ago. I had head to toe issues, while they are not 100% resolved I am about 50% better than when I first walked in the door. With only about 6 sessions. Issues from chronic all over body pain, hearing loss, digestive, migraines, restless legs, thirsty not thirsty, anxiety, like I said head to toe. They have treated me so gently, carefully and thoroughly. They take their time making sure they're precise with their questions and technique. I highly recommend this school. They have some amazing people here and I am so grateful I was turned on to this place. I have committed myself to a year of treatments, and my 8 year old son comes with me now, too. I'm sure I won't stop at year but with the amount of issues I have, they didn't happen over night and won't go away over night either.AthenaMarnae

Called today trying to get help for a friend. Mental illness is very real but unfortunately the people that pick up the phone for intake are heartless. Yan seems to have his life so figured out that he has kind compassion for people and truly wants to help. That’s why he works in the health care industry. I’m being very sarcastic. Asking if the person has insurance and what it is and then clearly hearing this arrogant scoff through the phone. If you are seeking help do not call them. I was very shocked by the disrespect from nurse Lorial L in the east wing. I am a guess coming to visit a patient. She has been rude on several occasions but I shrugged it off thinking maybe shes under stress…. But today she caught me off guard raising her voice at me talking in a disrespectful manner when I was leaving. I immediately let her know she was raising her voice and told her we can have a conversation but not to talk to me like that. She continued to have an attitude and closed the door in my face. Ive always had a good experience at sharp hospital. I can’t believe how unprofessional this nurse was acting!Shelisa Conner

They have, literally, saved my daughter's life twice now. Our family feels beyond blessed just knowing they are there. She has felt safe, cared for (really cared for and about) when she stayed. Clean, comfortable rooms and interesting groups, and as an added bonus the food was nice. As a parent of someone who's experienced PTSD from a very violent attack and subsequent drug addiction, I was lost as to how to help my beautiful daughter…they stepped in and like a dear friend, they wrapped their arms around her until we found the right place for her to further heal. I just completed the 16 day full time program at Healthcare Science Academy. The instructors Priscilla and Maricela made class fun, comfortable and welcoming. Gerald the program administrator was always very kind and all the staff are great mentors for those starting out in their health professions. I chose this program because of the fast track option and for the cost of tuition and left confident in my skills and ability to provide great patient care. — My only recommendation is that they find a new person to do the Live Scan background check and fingerprinting and cease business relations through that vendor. She is NOT affiliated with the academy but she is unbelievably rude and unprofessional in her demeanor and service manner and she left my form incomplete and the state testing agency sent me a letter regarding my incomplete application due to her mistake.Allison E

I just completed the CNA course with Ms. Carla during this quarantine. Let me tell you, I had the most impeccable experience! Ms. Carla is the most kind, generous, honest, and caring instructor I’ve ever had — even surpassing my college professors. She always came to class with a bright spirit, and a warm smile (although we all wore masks, it was easy to recognize in her demeanor 🙂 ). She made the classroom a safe environment to talk about our studying & practicing concerns, practical life experience, and even how to handle our personal lives in general. I am so great full that I got stuck with such a fire-cracker of a teacher, and I will always remember her and my experiences with her as my embarkation to my nursing career. I would 100% recommend Ms. Carla as an instructor for this program to others!Sarah C

Please splurge the extra hundred dollars and go somewhere that has professionalism and respect for their students. I went with San Diego medical college because for the 1600 or whatever it was they claimed everything was included over the phone. (it wasn’t we still have to pay for uniforms, finger printing, final exam,etc) They were also super nice and welcoming over the phone until your payments started going through. I could never call and ask a question or go to the front desk lady without receiving some sort of attitude or being brushed off as a whole. i missed a few days of class for my wedding which i informed them of at the beginning of the classes and it wasn’t until weeks after that i finally got my make up classes scheduled THE NIGHT BEFORE. as a matter of fact i worked with one of the clinical instructors to schedule my remakes and then was told by the higher ups i couldn’t go through with it because they wanted to charge 50 per remake and reschedules had to be approved. Ray was a great lecture instructor and Mr Mac was great but the lady that runs the office was awful. i didn’t receive the email before our exam with instructions on what to wear and bring and when i got there i realized i was missing some things, tried to ask the front desk lady what i was missing and she completely brushed me off and said it wasn’t her problem and to talk to the people from state. They are a very money hungry company that don’t care about their students let me save you the frustration. go somewhere else.Larissa Luthge

Where do i begin, waiting months to hear back about an exam date. The level of unprofessional behavior displayed with no sort of communication every time we asked for any sort of info we never heard back or got put to the side but whenever any sort of payment was due only then was the staff eager and happy to help. The rudeness from one of the front desk ladies was insane she was so condescending and rude for no reason she talked to some students like they were plain idiots. You are better off going somewhere else even the training was very subpar in my opinion if you really want to learn and develop any skills i would steer elsewhere. Like i said everything was so incredibly unorganized. I moved to the may class in order to graduate and get my cna license as soon as possible and i ended up testing until august. My classmates and I constantly asked about testing, about our BLS e-cards, about our powerpoint slides for studying that we randomly were denied access too. i live in Bay area, found this school online. I moved to San Diego for a month, the Nurse Assistant Program was a 22 day program. I found this school affordable and cheaper than the other schools.The Instructors are amazing and explain things in detail.If I did not understand , the instructors kept explaining things at all times. They also give Free tutoring class after class and on Saturdays. It was a great environment , we were all like a family. Gong to missed all my class mates. Especially explaining skills and practice Ms Tuba was great and a great Instructor, She gave us Saturday back up training after class training. Ms Amy clinical Instructor was all supportive and made the training fun and easy. Call them you will not regret. Tell them that Memet referred you. Give them a try, please. Where do I begin? I’ve been wanting to take this program for the longest, for like 4 years. When I finally had put the money together to take this program I decided to finally sign up and I literally do not regret it. First of all, Phil is such a good lecture instructor. I have never done so well on tests before and I was able to pass all his exams. I am not saying his tests are easy lol but he made me feel so motivated to pass the test. Everything he teaches is what you can expect on his tests as well for the national exam. I ordered a national exam booklet to study more but I didn't end up using it because the booklet the school gives you and everything Phil teaches you is enough to pass the national exam. Your classmates will become your friends at the end of the program. You guys start bonding by the time you have to draw on each other. You learn to trust each other. Now for the drawing instructor, Candice. She is such an Amazing instructor. She is so patient/kind and she is also funny. She makes you feel ready by the time you have to go to your externship site. Melania is also a kind/amazing person. She helps you find an externship site that works with your schedule. Candice and Melania thank you so much for everything and for helping/giving me advice during my externship. Phil,Candice, and Melania you guys deserve a raise! What to expect from the class: The first 2 weeks it’s lecture and for those 2 weeks you have a test on Fridays. You need to pass those 2 exams in order to get approved to take the national exam. For your third week in class Phil does a review of everything you learned plus he goes over common test questions for the national. Then the fourth week you take the national exam. For your fifth and sixth week you start drawing. You do not dive in straight away to draw. You get to practice first on a fake arm. After that you start drawing on each other. You have a final test for the drawing portion. After passing it you get approved to go to your externship site. I decided to go to the MCRD, the best decision ever. You learn a lot there and you get the practice you need and plus Candice and Melania are there to help you out. A friend of mine recommended PhlebotomyU back in December and I am glad that I took his advice. My class started in January 2020. The class is a month-long, the first 2 week is lecture and light hands-on training. The lecture part is taught at a pace which anyone could easily grasp the material. The last 2 weeks is all hand on phlebotomy training. They give such a clear and concise instruction, and individual attention until they feel that you are capable of doing it on your own. By week 4, everyone in my class looks very confident, they talk and move like a professional phlebotomist. By week 4, I was very confident in my skills. During the class, you will meet staffs all of them are CPT. For my class, Terry was in charge of lecture, Melania was in charge of front desk admin, hands-on training and practical exam. Andrew is helping with individual hands-on training and Thomas, he is in charge of the externship program and your main obsever/professor in MCRD externship he is also the main hands-on instructor with Ms Melania. PhlebotomyU is unlike any school, they provide externship as soon as you completed the lecture program. Some school will take months to get in an externship program or you have to find one yourself. PhlebotomyU has several locations across San Diego. Some externship takes about 1 week to complete some can last up to 4 weeks to complete, it is all up to you which ones you chose. Their dedication and willingness to help each and individual student succeed speaks volume. I give the program and all of its instructor especially Thomas 5/5. Thank you for all your help. I was stuck working a dead end job for years and didn't see a way out, and took a chance at PhlebotomyU to seek a different career path. I only had a high school diploma and hadn't been to school in years and had a lot of apprehension coming into it, the team here at PhlebotomyU came alongside me to take me step by step through the course, through the NCCT, and into the internship necessary to achieve my phlebotomy license. Atria La Jolla offers many features that would easily draw any aging independent senior to move in…and that is what my parents did approximately 7 years ago. At 87 and 90 years of age, they enjoyed many amenities including restaurant style dining, activities and many opportunities for social interactions with peers. During the 7 years of residence here, this property experienced a lot of turnover, starting as The Patrician, transitioning to Merrill Gardens, and now Atria La Jolla. Throughout and despite these changes of ownership, this has been my parent’s home. When my Mom passed away in 2019 after 73 years of marriage, my father was sad and lost. Atria staff came to the rescue, reaching out to him, engaging him in conversation and helping him to feel comfortable. Little did we know that just 6 months later, my Dad would face another crises – life in the midst of the Covid pandemic. Health and general aging issues play a role as seniors age. As we all know, Covid restrictions placed a new level of challenge for senior care residences. Atria La Jolla staff met these challenges and, in my opinion, far surpassed any expectations. What defines a really great Independent Living Retirement Community? In my opinion, it is the staff. These are the people who are expected to rise to the occasion. Care, courtesy, flexiblity, teamwork, creativity, patience, kindness, knowledge, and willingness to assist in many different ways describes the staff who work at Atria La Jolla. They have gone above and beyond to meet the various levels of needs and abilities for all of their residents and my father has been no exception. There are no words to adequately thank the wonderful Front Desk staff who manage to take care of at least 12 things at once and always do this so kindly. Chef Alberto took on the challenge of in-apartment meal service delivery and his staff, who I know were overworked, always delivered my Dad’s meals with a happy greeting that made him smile. Francisco and his maintenance and housekeeping staff not only managed the needs of the building and individual apartments, but also greeted residents personally despite having many jobs to take care of. Activity staff listened to what residents were interested in and offered activities that met their needs within the guidelines of the county’s restrictions. The teamwork demonstrated by all staff at Atria, under the leadership of Karinna Topete, is genuine! Residents and Staff are safe, healthy and now they are vaccinated and ready to return to the Independent Living Community lifestyle they deserve.Paula Schannon

A couple of years ago both my husband and I realized that staying at home was no longer an option for my mother in law and her husband. It was time to move to a safer place. After visiting a number of locations in the greater San Diego area our family found that safe place at The Atria in La Jolla. What a welcoming and caring place that has proved to be! Whether it was us or our children visiting from abroad the Atria always made our family feel welcome. It was wonderful to see how the staff was willing to work with us to make our visits as comfortable as possible. This past November, sadly, we had to say our final goodbye to our father in law. A small service was held in the Bistro. The staff was willing to think and work with us in making the service both dignified and intimate. We greatly appreciated all their assistance and support. We would recommend the Atria to anyone contemplating moving a family member to an independent living facility. Knowing that our Mom is in good hands is a great comfort. After living here for 9 months, I have to admit some recent disappointments. First, continued staffing problems in the dining room have substantially reduced the quality of meal service on weekends. Second, communication from management has lagged–such as fire inspections and alarm testing scheduled for 2 weeks ago that were never completed until this morning when they were done with no warning. Third, maintenance continues to be on a "squeaky-wheel" basis with no evidence of a system to track and complete previously submitted work orders–I still have outstanding requests from move-in. On the positive side, there is a real sense of community here from many friendly residents and helpful staff. We are generally happy to call Atria La Jolla home, but after 2 years of covid and a real hope that things would improve, it's disheartening that some of the organized services here are slipping in quality.Tom Hay Bauer

I am a student at UCLA right now and was home over the summer so I decided to go to school in Vista, Ca for my CNA. I did my research and came across Healthcare Academy of California. I couldn’t have chose a better school or have had a better instructor. Lauren is so great, she explains everything very well and she cares about all of her students. Beyond being very knowledgeable, she is also very funny and has the best stories. You may have to go to school every morning very early for a few weeks but Lauren and all my classmates made it super fun and worth it. The ENTIRE class passed our exams and keep in touch with each other. I would certainly go back for a BLS (CPR/AED) course if they offer that in the future. Thank you so much Lauren and Healthcare Academy of California. I highly recommend them and any reviews that say otherwise are from people that aren’t willing to do the work. 10/10 I highly recommend taking this course!!! Lulu (Ms. Lauren) is superwoman. Lulu is the absolute best. She is so hands on and makes the course fly by; too fast in my opinion. From day one she makes everyone feel comfortable and worry free! You can count on Ms. Lauren for about anything- which is why she deserves her nick-name. I had the best experience here at healthcare academy, I have now finished my cna course with Ms.Lauren. This has been the best class I have attended, she's such a outgoing teacher. Making the class interesting and fun. Definitely didn't feel like school, all our girls ended up being really good friends. I am definitely going to miss this class. Ms.Lauren prepared us so well for out state exam, I'm sure we all did great! If she were to teache other programs I would probably sign up again. Atria started off as a great facility, but after several management changes the care for my father went downhill. The Director was verbally abusive to him (which was overheard when my sister was on the phone with him and the Director was unaware). The Director has also lied to us (documented in writing) about incidents that allegedly occurred. When we asked for additional information, the required incident report was not on file; and when we asked the Executive Director about the incident, she shared a completely different account of what had happened, as she was present and observed. The Director has threatened my Dad on multiple occasions about getting kicked out of the facility for needing too much care, to the point where my Dad would need help but he was too afraid to call for support because she had him believing that if he asked for help he would have to move out. When the Director’s behavior was elevated to the Executive Director, the ED shared it was completely inappropriate for the Director to make those comments, yet they continued. In my Dad’s care plan, it includes assistance with showering to ensure he’s staying clean and avoiding infections, yet my Dad went weeks without a shower and no one from Atria communicated that to me. It wasn’t until I saw him and noticed how filthy he was, and inquired about the date of his last shower did I find out they were not happening as scheduled. We are moving him out due to a severe lack of trust based on the communication (both inaccuracies as well as lack of communication). I worry about the care and treatment of other residents.Julie Mccormack

My father moved into Atria Collwood in June, 2019. Throughout his lifetime dad consistently said that he wanted to stay in his own home. Moving out of the house he loved and lived in for so many years was a huge transition for dad, one he never anticipated, but he quickly adapted to his new environment. The entire staff of Atria Collwood welcomed him with open arms and to this day dad is very happy in his new home. There hasn’t been a single negative incident, only genuine caring by the staff. All staff members are friendly, have upbeat demeanors and smiles on their faces. Several times dad has stated that Atria Collwood is truly the best place for him. He often comments how relieved he is to no longer have his house to maintain and take care of. My mother-in-law was a short-term resident of Atria Collwood but due to rapidly failing health, an assisted living facility was no longer the right environment for her. During her time at Atria Collwood, she experienced the same quality care and her room was clean and pretty. Our family respects the fact that Atria Collwood takes Covid seriously and has consistently followed protocol to keep their residents safe. We sincerely appreciate the efforts Atria Collwood makes to celebrate each holiday and the special way they honor veterans. Dad mentions on a weekly basis that he is very happy living at Atria Collwood and what a good fit it is for him. To our family, that is peace of mind. Thank you Atria Collwood.Lynda Kelsen

About 18 months ago, my then 94-year old father took a fall, and it was determined that an assisted living home would be the best place for him to move into. He always said he was going to remain in his own home, no matter what, but he finally agreed that the time had come for him to move someplace else. My sister and I visited a lot of assisted living homes trying to find the perfect place for him, and once we toured Atria Collwood, we immediately knew it was the place for our dad. Every person we have ever encountered has been friendly and helpful. There is a really positive attitude amongst the staff and it shows. We have always been impressed with how clean they keep the facility. And all of his needs are taken care of – meals, cleaning, laundry, etc. Someone is always around and if he has an urgent need for help, they are only a push of a button away. There are different levels of care available, depending on need. They are lucky to have a great director, John Brennen. One of my dad’s favorite things they have started since covid is a weekly happy hour cart that delivers to each individual room. It is a huge relief to us knowing he is in a place that is so caring and kind. Thank you to all the staff at Atria Collwood!Janet N

Sometimes very limited selection of clothes. The last two times that I have shopped there have resulted in a poor check out experience. In one case I couldn't pull up my app and therefore didn't get all the discounts/coupons. Although the check out clerk told me I had. I had to go back to customer service to have the discrepancy ironed out when I realized that was not the case when I finally got the app working in my car. Today I got all the way home and was pulling off tags when I realized the receipt had 2 extra charges on the receipt. Lots of great deals on boarding wear like under armor and Adidas as well as their own name brand stuff. Worst Kohls store I have ever been to. They prioritized people checking out at the CUSTOMER SERVICE LINE who weren’t waiting in the proper line over people who are there for online pickup. DEFINITELY AVOID THIS PLACE!!! My mother-in-law was there for a week. The facility did not want to discharge her promising the best care, treatment and therapy to help her heal. Now we understand this prison of a facility only kept her there to get paid from the insurance. The nurses were rude, didn’t answer when she called and when they eventually went to her room they had attitude. They wanted her to relief herself when it was convenient for them as if she could go on call. When she did relief herself they would not change her diaper! Never did they offer her to FaceTime with the family. We discharged her against their recommendations and they were not happy! They didn’t release her with the proper discharge papers and they never contacted her primary care physician. The video on their website is the complete opposite of what this facility offers! She was not treated as family and the 30min of therapy three times a week is not worth it! It is sad that facilities like this exist. Do not take your loved ones here. My mother-in-law is still recovery from her horrible experience.Selina Sanchez

My father was a patient at Arroyo Vista for 3 months after a major fall. The people at the front desk were helpful, the administration was patient, and the nurses were all exceptional. Some key people were James, who was very caring and attentive to my father and kept me updated on his wellbeing, progress, and medications, and Roby, who was also very on top of making sure my father got his vaccines. They would both go the extra mile to help make sure he was taken care of. Unfortunately, I would beware of their social worker, Cynthia. She was unhelpful and pushed my father to leave when he was still unwell by telling my family members and the ombudsman that he was completely recovered. This caused a lot of extra stress on me to keep my father in the nursing center. Overall, their care was fantastic – I would just be careful of working with Cynthia.Linh Hua

My family member stayed in this facility after he suffered from a stroke and needed therapy to recover. He was having difficulty walking and moving his entire left side. He worked with the therapy team for 3 months. I saw him walking with a walker and he was discharged with a cane!!! The therapy department is amazing and really helped him progress to his full potential. The therapy he received was above and beyond my expectations. How involved and caring they were about his progress made me realize how great of a team they are. The nursing team was also super attentive, they notified my family and was available to give updates whenever we called. The facility is super clean, they are constantly cleaning! I would definitely recommend this facility to anyone who needs to recover. I would trust my family member here!Gina Sumontha
