The school may be small, but has activities that are present throughout the week. This could be writing workshops, movie nights, sport games, musicals, dance parties, etc. The resources available on campus are all next to each other, so traveling from place to place is swift. Just did a tour with my sister and niece. Very impressed with the grounds, and the young lady doing the tour. She knew all kinds of interesting facts about how and when the place was built. Some of the architects details and why the buildings are the way they are. They've got learning workshops and grant money for struggling students, either academically, financially, or both. When I went to University I never had something like this. Idk if it existed, and if it did, the University never advertised it for students. Also! This school has an amazing program for those who want to work with animals. The ZAS program (Zoo and Aquarium Science) is a 2 yr applied associates program and its goal is to get you straight into your career. They have terrestrial animals and an aquarium on site! I went for the IT area. Big mistake. They could not keep knowledgeable instuctors. Was told most would be online when enrolling and after enrollment only two classes was online. They kept putting me in classes that were to advanced like one or two classes should have been done before taking. I have a issue with walking due to a previous injury had asked for assistance to the buildings and never received. I ended up leaving due to the rude and not trained instructors and it being to much to make it up the hill to classes daily. This was in 2015, 2016.Marinda Carter

The school maybe nice, I never had the opportunity to explore, however; their paramedic program is a joke. The staff runs each class on different criteria, for instance my instructor (Wesley Carter) stated we don't do pulse checks in CPR after the first check indicating an arrest. However; as a BLS CPR instructor that is false and the AHA teaches pulse check. However; he was my instructor so in order to test out I did as he wanted and when a different instructor tested me they failed me for using the broslow tape and for not checking pulses, said I should have done it by weight based and the broslow tape is a guideline. Since then I have spoken to several national certified paramedics, nurses, and physicians that state this school is a joke and shouldn't be teaching students period and that the broslow tape is there for a reason to assist in dosing a pediatric patient when weight is not obtained. The instructors can't get on the same page and give out different requirements and if you do what one says it's wrong to every other instructor. Also they give you test out scenarios at the end every instructor does 2 which is you standard, set by North Carolina and my instructor is the only one that does 3 scenarios. No uniformity and poor quality instructors. Horrible experience that I will never get my time, my money, and my family gatherings, birth of my child, and events because these people are not on the same page.Kevin Meiser

Get me outt. If I could drop out i would. This college is awful I learn more from quizlet then I have with any teachers. The teachers here are all lazy and only care about their paycheck. I asked for help and never got a response from one teacher and I still haven't :P. What I would give to be able to drop out from this college. 2 stars for providing a college beyond high school in Kinston. One star for pay compared to other community colleges that pay adjunct instructors $35+ per hour. How has LCC contributed to Lenoir County in skills and talent? On Pitt college's website it states that its students have contributed over $114 million dollars to the local community. I walked around the college grounds and it is boring, no energy or excitement. Lastly, LCC should market more to Black students and the Black community because although Kinston is almost 70% Black; it's not reflected in its student body. The dorm experience at university can be a series of nightmare rituals and students find themselves feeling hopeless lost and in horrendous debt. So distraught by this college. I signed up 2 months ago for a Motorcycle Safety Course. They gave me an email 3 days before the day of the class to take a 3 hour course that needs to be done before the class or 'no refund'. That was the 1st strike; people have kids and work full time. A bit long than 3 days would have been great. Then the day BEFORE the class at 5:15pm I get a phone call telling me they cancelled the class and I can't reschedule for 2+ months. I was told over the phone to come down on Monday to get my refund as I paid with cash. I get to the Workforce Development office to be treated like a crazy person by all the people working then I'm told I have to wait 2-3 weeks for it to be mailed like I'm supposed to just know this already. I would not recommend this college to anyone even as a last resort. Very unprofessional and very unfriendly.Dj Coleman

This college is an absolute joke. First, if you need to talk with someone good luck. They will never return a phone call ever. If you go to their campus they seem too busy to help. Emails are a hit or miss and will take a couple days for a response. Next, if you going for a degree here, make sure they offer all the classes here. They didn't for criminal justice and I had to Pitt CC to finish my degree. Also, their office hours is more of a suggested time for them. On base campus never seems to be open. Went their today at 2:00 (they close at 2:30), and of course no one was there. Take it from someone who has been going here for 2 1/2 years, go somewhere else. The instructors in HVAC-R are knowledgeable and relatable, however I am disappointed that there are no night classes the second year making it difficult for those who have other responsibilities to work full time and go to school. Also I feel the curriculum schedule makes it to where you teach yourself and the instructors go over what you read instead of the regular cover it in class then do homework. The Barber School at James Sprunt is the top of the line. You can get any barber service there for much less than any shop. It is clean, comfortable, and professional. The students are dressed professionally, they are clean, and are taught to be respectful to clients. Patsy McCoy (daytime instructor) and Sylvester Snow (night instructor) are focused on excellence, not only in training barbers, but in developing leaders. Registration is almost over and I've been reaching out to my advisor since the beginning of last month to register and still no response. As a staff member I just wanted to clarify the review by Trudy. We do not ask for proof of residence to use our library. All community college libraries are public. Also, our computers are available to all our patrons for however long they would need to use them. In the event of all of them being used and a student needing to get on one we would probably ask a public library patron to accommodate the student. However we do have an adequate amount of computers that we haven't run into that problem yet. : ) If you want a nice quiet place to study, we are your library! It is especially quiet on days when school is out but we are open. The staff are friendly and willing to help with research and computer needs. We also have many interesting books and movies. If you are just jumping through the hoops to have a degree under your belt and don't care if you actually learn anything, its a fine place to do that. if you expect to get the education you are paying for to increase your knowledge base and be better prepared for your future, this is the wrong place. Pitt Community College has not been a good experience for me at all. I received no help from the financial aid office, they told me they could do nothing for me unless I had a parent present even though I am 20 years old and am completely independent from them and they love in a whole other state. Don't even get me started on the "advisor" situation there. I was assigned to a "success navigator" not an advisor and he had no idea what he was doing. His name is Clark Howerton. Being a first generation college student, I needed guidance so I went to him. He offered me 0 help at all. I was then transferred to a "real" advisor during my 3rd semester there. She again offered no help. I had to email her 2 times over the course of a week, so that I was finally able to get a response. Instructors told me that she was not a good advisor… so why is she one? Because of these mistakes through pitt, I am falling behind in my academic schedule. Would not recommend this institution to anyone.Presley Bryant

So here's my Wake Tech story. I secured financial aid and then enrolled into Wake Tech as a full-time student. And then the financial aide office attempted to cut my much-needed aid twice, the first time on the Friday before my classes were to begin and then the second time was the following Monday via email when I was literally 4/5 the way through the commute from Fayetteville to Raleigh to attend my first day of classes, causing me to turn around and head back home. And another thing: maybe it's just me — perhaps I missed something?–however it seems that Wake Tech expects new students to simply show up and know what to do? Nothing's explained, nearly none of the stuff that I needed to know to get started was covered during the online orientation that new students are required to complete nor were we given any booklet or the like to explain how stuff works . But let's rewind a bit. After securing financial aid, enrolling and completing online orientation….I remained clueless. So thereafter I spent about a week commuting back and forth between Fayetteville and South campus in an effort to complete registration and get everything else taken care of. I did so under the assumption that I'd get stuff figured out if only I'd drive up there and speak to Wake Tech face to face–but not so . During this process I asked advisors and other staff a variety of questions only to be told conflicting info and advice thereby increasing my confusion. And then I went to the bookstore where I learned that some of the books that I needed were out of stock and that notebooks cost $8. So I left without my books. I did however attempt to attend classes first day of semester, as mentioned above, but then received that email from the financial aid office– had that not happened I would have went to school and maybe things would have turned out differently. I did receive another email from someone else at Wake Tech telling me that the email from financial aid threatening to reduce my aid the 2nd time was a mistake and that I'm covered…but unfortunately I've already missed a week of school so I guess I'm out. Very depressing as Wake Tech is the closest college offering a full curriculum on substance abuse/addiction counseling and that's what I want to do. But, it is what it is .Frank A

You remember when the pandemic started, and everyone had to start learning how to use computers? Now imagine, a bunch of teachers, creating online courses from scratch with no help. ITS A DISASTER. Its like NO ONE set a criteria for how the classes should follow a general structure, so that students aren't spending the first 2 weeks of every new class trying to figure out what is what. Its like no one showed them, "this is the gold standard"… this is what a well put together black board class looks like. The online courses are archaic. (Dr. Frear, I complained about some things and I am sorry. After seeing what else is our there( summer 2022), HOLY MOLY. Your blackboard set up is the least confusing and was by far, the best thing I have seen yet) Instructors use blackboard, not as a classroom but as a file folder system. Instead of using the platform, they made it so that every thing is word documents and or files you have to download when they could have just simply used the actual platform. I should only be downloading PowerPoint slides, worksheets, homework, etc. Not opening a document to read something you could have made a video and "instructed" us or copy and pasted to the platform. Does anyone know the definition of a syllabus there? It should be all encompassing. I shouldn't have to read 5 documents to figure out how I will be graded, what I will be graded on, the rules, the expectations, which books I need to buy. If the department has a syllabus, I'm pretty sure you are supposed to take that document and incorporate it into your own, at the very least create an addendum/appendix. My Grades should clearly have due dates, weighted totals, and all of the grade-able items at the start of the class. There should be no, imagining what my grade is at any given moment.Buttercups

I’ve spent 29 years teaching at Wake Tech and have taken a number of classes here too. I know what it’s like at Wake and I am telling the unvarnished truth about it. I’m retiring soon so it’s not about getting a promotion! Generally speaking the facilities, faculty and quality of education are really very good – in addition the price is still reasonable. Don’t be conned by private educational facilities that promise you a “great job” after graduation and then put you in a low end, minimum wage job where you can’t even afford to pay off your pricey school loans (this happened to a friend of mine). Go to WT and get a better education for a fraction of the cost – you will leave with real skills and THAT’S how you get a job – with knowledge. Plus Wake has a solid reputation with employers. Yes, there are aspects of the school that are unfortunate – I hear complaints from my students, and there are a number of policies that drive the faculty crazy too – much of it is due to the typical bureaucracy that seems inevitable with very large institutions. Is it really better elsewhere? Maybe. Maybe not. Nonetheless, if you go with the sincere desire and motivation to learn, and you treat your teachers and fellow students with respect – you will be supported by all and do well. The ILC really is a remarkable facility and is intended to help struggling students succeed. When it comes to the financial aid office I hear the best approach is to fill out ALL the paperwork that is required COMPLETELY and ON TIME. This college has made a terrible impression. They got me admitted as a transfer student, and I have been preparing for the Fall session online, but to appear in person, and I just found out I missed the registration deadlines because student advising never got back to me. I took the new student orientation and the professor, just skimmed through all the info. There wasn't time for questions, and she cut it short by 30 minutes. It didn't even explain how to register online. I had been in communication and prepared for this session but didn't understand how to register so all the classes I had 'added to my schedule' weren't actually registered, and no one followed up with my questions. I thought I was registered, and even as I try to register now after the fact, it still says I need student advising which no one ever got back to be except for an email to say I already had everything set up. I am torn about this. Now I have to wait another session to get started?! NO! I will take my education somewhere where I can actually get assistance. This is such an emotional drag.Gabrielle Flores

My granddaughter had a terrible experience here. She was in with the “Brunswick Guarantee” which is a program that ensures it you maintain a 2.5 GPA throughout high school that you’d be able to come to the community college free of no cost! But, we thought that’d be a great idea but, we were by far wrong. My granddaughter was able to graduate high school with a 4.0 GPA and she wasted 2 years here.. I’m going to let her write the rest of the review.. Hey! So going here was probably one of the worst education experiences that I’ve PERSONALLY experienced. I had high hopes on becoming a doctor and as medical school is VERY expensive I thought that it would have been an amazing idea to spend my first 2 years here for no cost.. Well the saying “you get what you pay for” surely does apply here I suppose.. Because, the professors were very rude to me and weren’t fair whatsoever. Didn’t even care if kids were cheating and one professor even offered to help the kids during the final exam secretly (who was my friend) and that was crazy! I’m fairly sure that’s against a colleges ethics. I’m glad that I transferred to NC state to finish for my bachelors degree. Not worth it in my personal point of view even if you went to a local high-school and are capable of coming here free of no cost. Please if you’d like the best for your future choose something else.. I’m looking forward to come back down here but, maybe move to Wilmington to start my career as a pediatrician (children’s doctor) This college is strong advised against.. Just had a terrible experience with the registrar of this school. I asked her for a turn around time of a sensitive matter her response was “it’s not like I’m throwing it in the trash or anything. I have to get up and walk down the hall.” I asked her what the turn around time would be for her response. I guess she’s not used to expectations or keeping her word, because she got really nasty after that. I ended up after listening to her multiple sighs calling back and speaking to Dr.D. I am awaiting a response. I had s horrible encounter with this school in 2013, and it’s sad to see that things don’t change. The school seems to be overrun with rude staff that can’t and won’t help. Do not waste your time here. The teachers won't answer calls or will ignore your several voice mails or even texts. I came in one day to switch to online courses, nothing more, and when Dirk saw me he gave me trouble for stepping into a building with my sleeping 2 year old in my arms. Even after explaining I had to switch to online because of being a single mom he treated me and her like an issue. I have lived at Independence Village for five years. I find the staff to be generally friendly and responsive. The meals are good, although they tend to have too many carbohydrates. The building is about thirty years old, so it's not in perfect shape, but it's kept clean, and they are constantly making improvements. The residents are friendly. The activities director is excellent, and there is a very active bridge club. One of the best things about Independence Village is its location – within walking distance of restaurants, a grocery store, two banks, a pack-and-ship store, two pharmacies, a nail salon, and a hairdresser. It's also near Rex Hospital and many doctors offices. I should note that these reviews should be taken with a grain of salt, for the staff actively solicited "five star reviews" from selected people. Nevertheless, Independence Village is a pleasant place to live. It provides an excellent value and it deserves a legitimate four star rating.TF Howes

I am so happy to have found this place for my father – for so many reasons! First, I feel so much better that my father is in a place that he can live independently, in a safe environment, and still have people that genuinely take an interest in seeing he is doing well. Third, I evaluated many senior living options in Wake and Durham counties and IV offers by far the best value…the most for your money IMO. So much is included in the price. And it's in a great area! Our family toured several independent living communities when we chose a place for our mom. The calm, friendly and welcoming atmosphere attracted us at first to Independence Village of Olde Raleigh. In the following 4 years that feeling has been strengthened by the constant efforts of the staff – at all levels – to intelligently and efficiently ensure the security and independence of the community. The location is amazingly convenient to healthcare, shopping, banks, museums, you name it. The building is attractive without looking like a “snooty” hotel. The staff treat the residents like respected friends, not just as customers. ALL the staff are especially commended for their outstanding management during the COVID-19 pandemic. I loved going here.. I took the phlebotomy class with Mrs. Hobbs as my instructor. The classes are very small and the teacher would place her personal experiences with what’s going on in the textbook to make you better understand certain situations. She never moved forward unless everyone was on the same page. The owner Mrs. Ki would step in often and speak and to see how things were going with the students which was great bc it made you feel like they care. In the future I plan on taking other courses here…also, the schedules are very flexible you can do weekday/nights or weekends.. thanks to SOP for such a great experience!!!Brionna Ward

What I liked about shades of purple was mainly the Tuition fee for the phlebotomy course I took. Very affordable. Although I was able to pay the all amount up front, there’s payment plan options as long as you pay before the last day. Secondly the school have amazing firm instructors who make sure you get the necessary knowledge you need in training to become the best phlebotomist there is. Overall shades of purple has a good and friendly environment to learn. Kudos to Ms. Bradley, Mr. Gates and JessicaNancy Gesicho

If I could give ZERO stars I would! We used this company for almost a year until we switched companies. The day our loved one was brought home there were so many nurses there helping get everything situated along with the DON Melissa who was doing her paper work. THE VERY NEXT DAY……..no one showed up! We were left with no nurses no way to know what meds to give or anything! We called and they couldn't find the nurse that was sent out to the house…or send another one out there….we reached out to the DON who told us "I'm only a phone all away I will come help out" she didn't answer nor call back until a few days later. They do not have the adequate amount of staffing and their nurses show up whenever they want too….never on time. I myself WOULD NOT recommend this company to anyone. Look at all the reviews that were posted all of a sudden! They are all employees of this company! What a coincidence! Good luck to anyone who chooses to use this company!Shannon Ordess

I am currently an LPN (license practical nurse) with Intellichoice and absolutely love it. The staff it always very supportive and answer any questions or concerns that I may have in a timely manner. Every staff member is always friendly and helpful when they answer the phone or email. It is always “how can I help you, and please let us know if there is anything else we can do for you and have a great day.” Both clinal supervisors are fantastic as well and always answer my questions and help when needed. There is always someone on call 24/7. I make my own schedule and love the flexibility I have with by making my schedule. I absolutely love the families and patients I work with. It nice to be able to choose where you work. This is by far the best company I have work for in my years of working in the medical field.Celeste Railey
