The campus is extraordinary with unparalleled class sizes and unique degree opportunities. It was such an amazing tour and information session even with the difficulties of the pandemic. Where do I even begin? This was an OK school to attend and I DO mean OK. The dean was WONDERFUL and became a good friend while I was there. My advisor was amazing and I had some absolutely tops professors. The campus is small and self contained but gorgeous nonetheless. Campus police are all really good guys and there are just really good people here from the friendly caf ladies to admin. THAT SAID, there are a LOT of negatives and I do mean a LOT. The whole campus manages to be uphill in some form or fashion which is really difficult if you end up injured or disabled. There are a lot of professors with really strict attendance policies so you better have your mental and physical health in order or you’re going to have a hard time. A lot of people here act like they’re Ivy League so the workload is absolutely insane. God rest your soul if you’re a music major. The most difficult part of my experience here was the extremely limited accessibility as a disabled individual, most notably the soulless provost. When I had to take part of a semester off due to a medical emergency, my credits weren’t applied properly forcing me to take an extra semester to make up for it. We as students were never notified when elevators were out or being maintenanced and I ended up missing classes because I couldn’t use the stairs. The professors with the strictest attendance policies only cared that I wasn’t in class, not why. While I was there, the college couldn’t keep a president longer than two years at a time so it wasn’t like we the student body saw any point in getting to know the president. When Krulak was in charge, he knew us all by name and our personal issues. He made sure I never had any accessibility issues. But as soon as he was gone, it was like a totally different school. The semester I was in a wheelchair was a soul crushing hell in and of itself. This also isn’t a place you want to go if you’re queer. I fought one professor for a whole semester to call me by my name instead of what was on the roster. This led to a LOT of students using the wrong name which led to unspeakable dysphoria. It was a war just to get people to use that name so I just stopped trying when it came to pronouns. The best departments for fellow trans students are anything arts related like English, Studio Art, and theater. I changed my major because the science department was so transphobic. While the theater department is the best for this, it has its own issues. Then, there’s the neighborhood. There’s a drinking game we like to play called “gunshots or fireworks” if that gives you any idea. It’s really close to Eastlake where even cops won’t go. My husband was working on a roof in the area and found sniper bullets. The ER five minutes away sees a lot of stabbings and gun wounds but you should be fine if you’re white. Just everyone will tell you not to turn right off campus. It’s silly because the people there know who’s a college kid and they aren’t going to mess with any because they don’t want that kind of trouble. You’re safe on campus but don’t park by the sorority houses unless you’re cool with your car being broken into. It’s a recurring problem. This is probably not a place I’m going to send my kids for a lot of reasons. I did enjoy the classes themselves and frat row knows how to party. The professors were stellar and the campus was gorgeous but none of that totally cancels out all the negative. So as long as you’re straight, cisgender, white, mentally healthy, and able bodied you’ll be fine!smjaygal

Of course I love it…I am the President of the College. I have read some of the critical comments and question how long ago they were written. BSC is a remarkable college…extremely strong academically, very student oriented, guarantees an internship for each student and, beginning in the junior year, a mentor if desired. We not only focus on developing young men and women mentally, we also focus on leadership and character development. The campus is beautiful, the faculty and staff dedicated to providing the best education and environment possible for the students, and the sense of “family” is ever present. Extracurricular activities are remarkable…great sports, arts, theater, etc. The college sits on a hilltop outside of Birmingham so you get a wonderful campus that is close to a vibrant city. I have just completed my sophomore year as President and am very happy with the direction of the college and the remarkable students who attend…they are the very best thing about BSC. If you are looking for a superb education, the ability to get the job you want upon graduation (or the grad school you want), and a place to make lifelong friends, look no further.Charles Krulak

Our son is in his sophomore year at BSC, and loving every minute. He has been fully engaged by his professors, and has made some meaningful friendships. He started taking Chinese and is thriving. He’s in a fraternity and is now on the InterFraternity Council. There are some wonderful campus ministries where he is being fed spiritually. There have been concerns voiced about campus safety: he has never felt unsafe, and trusts the campus security office and the fact that the campus is secured all the way around its perimeter. It truly is an oasis of learning and relationships for our son, and we are very grateful! It should also be noted that the college recently announced the drastic reduction of tuition for students! This is great news and will hopefully have a ripple effect across many colleges.Matthew Sullivan

So so many reasons I would suggest against going here. Private school only out for money. You use the same books for most classes yet you are charged for books every term. Instructors are about half and half. Some are ghetto and unprofessional, others are trying to teach you what you will be doing on the job, and others only want you to do things the way they do them as if it’s the only right way. Extern sites are horrible. Once you graduate good luck getting a job unless you were lucky enough to get one on your own. My extern site wasn’t hiring so after finishing my hours about a month later the school helped set me up with a job making a whole dollar an hour more than I was making while in school for a job an hour away from me. Job also had nothing to do with my field. Had to move out of state and get a job in a factory. Still not having ANY luck getting a job in my field as most employers require experience. Frustrated doesn’t even begin to explain how I feel owing student loans for pieces of paper I can’t use.Sherra Randall

I’d give zero stars if I could. This school’s electrical program is a joke. Teachers don’t even show up for class, in the 9 months I attended not ONCE did I receive a lesson. Not ONE. The lab was empty, no supplies to even work on anything. Spoke with the head of the trades, and his response on many occasions was “I agree entirely, this isn’t acceptable” yet not ONCE fixed anything. Then one of my teachers who never showed up for class decided to text me and ask if I was done with school…so he could hit on me. Disgusting. I wasted so many months doing homework and trying to learn the material myself, and so much of my hard earned money just to feel like I’ve been had in the end. I enjoyed my experience at Fortis, I was in the dental assistant program. I had been to another school and did a fast track program, which was not worth the money. With Fortis, not only did I get experience from the classroom, but was able to work in a dentist office for hands on experience with real patient’s. As long as you do your work and be an adult you can be successful with your diploma or degree. I have been with the same place since I graduated in 2018 and I am the lead surgical assistant in a periodontal dental office. Also shout out to Mrs. Sturrock, she will bend over backwards for you to help you succeed. Respect is something that she will give you as long as it is given in return.Becky Johnson

Herzing university is a nonprofit college and this is not the route to go. State and Community college are the best route to go very affordable. This school is not ACEN ACCREDITED. They will lie just to get you in because the worker get paid through your loans. I visit Birmingham campus and the Campus was the nasty, disgusting and the advisor are very unprofessional. I am Asian, at first i have this feeling of fear of being discriminated in the class but it turns out in opposite way and end up treating each other in the class like a family. Dr. Teisha is a great blessing to everybody who dream to become a CNA. We first saw Somerby when investigating places where my elderly mother might like to live. We said, “We want to live there some day!” Well, that day has come. We always said that we wanted to move into a retirement home when we wanted to and not when we had to. It started when my husband said “Read this interesting article on retirement living.” We both thought that downsizing and making a new home in an independent living facility made sense. “Let’s go look at Somerby!” We went there the next day and it was as nice as it was 10 years ago! After looking at several other places, we put a deposit on a beautiful 3-bedroom apartment overlooking a pond with two water fountains! Somerby was bright and beautiful and the staff and residents were super friendly. The next day we put our home up for sale. It sold within the week; and we were living in Somerby in less than 30 days. We downsized in 4 easy stages: (1) Selected what we would take to our new home; (2) invited family to come and take what they wanted; (3) invited friends to take what they wanted–all for free; and (4) gave the residue to charity. It was all so much fun, like a free Flea Market! Moving was exciting and easy. Somerby put in new flooring, painted, cleaned and even helped us hang pictures, cabinets, shelving and mirrors! Now, six months later we are so happy with our decision. The staff and residents continue to be friendly and call us by our first names. The Somerby food is delicious. We eat dinner with two other couples that are our age. At dinner we enjoy great conversation and we all share hilarious stories of “back in the day.” Twice a month the head Chef demonstrates and cooks a special lunch. One time he invited Don to cook his famous Flaming Spinach Salad! Our weekly housekeeper now feels like a member of our family and she does an excellent job cleaning and washing the linens. The social activities are more numerous to mention but we especially like the Somerby sponsored day trips around the Birmingham area, watching Sunday movies in the Somerby Theater, playing bridge and Bingo. Here’s a big surprise you might like–the wine is free! We have said many times, this is like living on a 5-Star Cruise Ship without the waves! I was invited to lunch on a Wednesday, last month. I had never visited Somerby and was not familiar with it. My friend told me about the $5.00 luncheon buffet that was open to the public on Wednesday. She bragged about the food that was prepared by an excellent chef. First of all, I was excited when I first walked in the door, just to know that these beautiful facilities were available to seniors who want a carefree, beautiful place to live out the rest of their senior years. Everything from gourmet food, transportation, a coffee lounge, day long activities of the finest kind and the facilities including doctors offices and a gym across the street. The ambience of the entire property is peaceful and beautiful. Now, all that said, talking to staff sealed the deal that this is just the kind of place that I would prefer when I give up my home in the future to enjoy wonderful living with little responsibility and smiling faces all around. This is the most wonderful facility for Independent Living with the availability to transition to assisted living and nursing home if necessary. Our initial visit included a tour and personal meeting to discuss the details of transitioning from home to Ind. Living. Michelle Suggs made mom feel like she had arrived at her new home and she was taking a tour. The staff was extremely nice, staff retention was amazing- many had been there 5-15 years, and the residents were glowing. We got to visit with the residents and they were so gracious to take time out to talk to us- all were happy, loved their environment, and strongly recommended coming. There are way too many nice things to say about Somerby- I’m just so glad we found it and they had the perfect apartment for mom ready within a few weeks.Maggie Tucker

Please, if you are not having a high risk pregnancy, DO NOT HAVE YOUR BABY HERE! I feel like if I did not leave when I did, I would be dead. I was admitted with pre-eclampsia. Now, my nurses on the maternity unit were good and so were the nurses on the neonatal unit. My baby is biracial, and one of the neonatal nurses did not believe that my son was my son. She said are you sure you are here for that baby…. But that’s another story. While on the maternity unit, a patient care tech charted my blood pressure as normal and did not actually check my blood pressure. SHE FALSIFIED MY BLOOD PRESSURE! DO YOU KNOW HOW DANGEROUS THAT IS ON A PRE-ECLAMPSIA PATIENT!!! I emailed Terri Poe, the chief nursing officer, and the nurse manager for that unit. No one EVER called me to follow up with me. The charge nurse offered me a parking pass, which is ridiculous. Bottom line DO NOT HAVE YOUR BABY HERE……Jennifer Dean

Went there for the first time ever on 1/25/21. I babysit 3 boys 5, 3 & 1yr old brothers. The youngest ones both have medical issues & I went with their mom to take them for a checkup. When I say that I’ve never seen a more caring staff, and I mean from the cafeteria workers to desk clerks to Dr’s….I mean it! The nurses & physicians (sincerely) pay attention to *every word you say to them & every question you ask! It’s extremely apparent how much they care about their patients and that’s hard to find anywhere!!! I love these kids as if they were my own & I’m so happy that they are in such loving, capable hands❤Holli Sanders

The best hospital I’ve ever been to. The staff is awesome and the bedside manner is great. They make you comfortable knowing that you’re probably going to be there for some time that it being a critical hospital. The love they give is an understatement. If I was rich I would tip the doctors, nurses, techs, etc. for my gratitude.If don’t nobody else realize there job I do and I salute them to the fullest. They are definitely Heroes. Miles College is a great institution. Any experience at a college is what you make it. I am very involved and the staff is very helpful to students. The college wants you to succeed and the environment is geared towards success for the students. As a student-athlete it is important to stay on top of your work, you have to work towards your grades. I encourage anybody of any race to attend Miles College. Experience is good if you don’t count the rude and ill-mannered administrators. You have to pretty much bend down and kiss their behinds to get a smile, or “you’re welcomed” out of them. This is the absolute worst college I’ve ever seen. They have constantly lost my paperwork over the 2 semesters that I went there and now that I am transferring out of there to Wallace State Community College they have put a hold on my student account with them which is blocking them from sending a final transcript to Wallace State after I’d already requested that they send a transcript after spring grades were posted to it and they ignored the check mark on the send at the end of term and sent Wallace an incomplete transcript. I already know what the hold is for because they just sent me a college exit financial aid paperwork as if I’m not going to be going to college at all anymore even though their aware of me transferring out because of already sending Wallace State a transcript once. It seems their trying to block me from getting a complete education from another higher quality college.Allen Norris

I have been a student here for the past 3 years and am graduating next semester with an associate’s in science. I love Jefferson State. Professors here are absolutely amazing all around. As educators, mentors, as guidance, and are impressively over qualified honestly. If going to grad school I suggest doing all prerequisites here before hand. You will be better prepared. A great place to start working towards a brighter future. Offers great scheduling and support from staff and professors. The nursing program is by far one of the best in the state. I major in pre-pharmacy and will be transferring next year to grad school. All of my prerequisites were available and are transferrable. Financial Aid and Advisor department is also great. Apparently she was so very “stacked”with degrees, she wanted to make everyone suffer by intentionally making the course harder than it needed to be. I saw her as a trickster more so than a teacher. I have never met a teacher who wanted students to fail as much as she did. A little control went WAY too far for her. Other than her, it was all knuckling down studying hard to be the best registered nurse I could be. If you want an organization that walks the talk about ethics, not just their own code of conduct, but other confidential info like HIPAA – this is not the school to work with. And I will say their staff are the most unprofessional and rude people I have worked with to resolve an issue. They just blew me off, would not respond after I made my report. I had to start writing emails to various managers in the University, going up to the President to just get the Compliance office to finally respond at all – not out of professionalism or ethics; she complained I was sharing confidential information outside her office and threaten legal action – it was ironic in that my complaint was over their office leaking confidential information on our code of conduct complaint – and I am not kidding – they leaked our complaint of harassment to the person who was harassing us – but did not respond to us at all; I am not exaggerating. Google it “University of Alabama Compliance Office Code of Conduct Violation Birmingham Alabama” I do not know what their definition is of “not retaliating” is, but it sure is not the one in the dictionary. If you are subject to any sort of ethics issue, especially if it is general harassment, sexual harassment or any type of discrimination – DO NO go to their Compliance office – go straight to the police (the real police, not the school security office) if you want it to be handled professionally and your information to remain confidential.R Justice

I would like to recognize two members of the Huntsville Team: Marsean and Shawna. These ladies are absolute angels. They both go above and beyond in their service to my Mother and Step Father. They are more like family and would never call them “employees.” We are going through a difficult time with my step-dad and both Marsean and Shawna have been integral in the physical and emotional care provided to my parents. Don’t waste your time with this company. Completed all paperwork, but never began to work. Was sent a email about a hospital orientation, which I never confirmed for. Spoke with Kim Mctune after not attending, and she stated they were not going to work with me anymore because I was a no call no show. Claimed company called me twice and I never responded, however once I provided call logs and voicemails showing that no one called me, no response. Shady company.Tayler Walker

Applied for pct position and AFTER taking all the test I was told I needed 1year experience but I was just certified not even a year ago. And everytime I tried calling Megan she never ANSWERED & would always go to voicemail.John White

I’m a current resident. Do not send your loved ones here. Staffing problems rude and unprofessional the food doesn’t just taste awful it’s sometimes inedible I’ve had an awful experience and can’t wait to leave.
