9 Best 2 Year Nursing Programs In Akron, OH (2022 Updated)

I have been a student at Herzing since September of 2018 and I have watched that school go down hill. They can not keep consistent nursing instructors and have to make changes to student schedules 2 days before classes start. When they know most of their student population are parents with the majority of us being single parents that work and go to school. But they have made it abundantly clear that they do no support students unless they have money to pay out of pocket. I have watched faculty that has been there since I started grow more and more stressed with the “behind the scenes” politics that go on inside the school. I have watched instructors walk out the door and not look back. Herzing advertises that they are family oriented and all of that but it’s all a joke. They hired the nursing chair to add “ diversity” among the faculty. They have students file complaints on instructors because some of the instructors and other faculty is the rudest people I have ever met. They claim to be a nonprofit organization but have increased cost of tuition twice in just under two years. Oh and don’t have nothing go wrong in your personal life when you fail a class because they don’t care. You can have plan after plan but it won’t be enough for them to let you finish your program when you only have one semester left. This school has been the biggest waste of money and time of my life. I use to enjoy going to school in the mornings I loved the things that I got to learn on a daily basis.. but as their instructors left so did my pride in the school. They do not follow any of the standards that they hold their students to. They don’t educate you if you make a mistake they reprimand you and fail you. They will show you over and over again that you success means nothing to them.. they just want the paycheck.Misty Romigh

Recommended for real people that have real lives and real responsibilities. I attended the online program for my bachelors and masters degrees in nursing, though there is a stand alone campus here in Akron. I was able to attend both programs full time and I will consider returning when it's time for any post-masters certificates. The admissions department was easy to work with and did not use tactics that made me feel pressured or rushed with deciding to enroll and then re-enroll for my advanced degree. The professors were as helpful as they could be and did everything they could do to prepare me to pass my certification exam (which I did on the first attempt!). The resources that we were provided surprised me because they were so accessible and effective. Lastly, the very important behind the scenes staff-accounts, student services and advisors, library, and tech support were amazing. They always addressed my concerns within a timely fashion and what was not known, they sought out an answer and closed the loop for me. My student services advisor (Meaghan G.) continued to answer questions in this same manner even after I completed the program. Thank you to all of the staff. Save your money and time!!!!! Students don’t mean anything to them besides a hefty paycheck. They will side on the faculties side every time. The nursing chair is the biggest joke of all the faculty and is the most unprofessional person I have encountered at the school. Some professors care and want you to learn the material, while others play favoritism among students. Don’t worry about signing the syllabus, addendum, nursing handbook, or the P.R.I.C.E. to success paper because the school doesn’t support the policies if its against a faculty member. They can’t keep professors and the student turn over rate is beyond high. Finally if you want to take general education in a classroom setting, not going to happen here because they let go of their general education professors and it’s done all online. So be prepared to pay a ton of money to teach yourself.Danielle Crow

I attended Fortis College back in 2011/2012, and I loved every minute while I was there. I was blessed to have such great instructors. All had experiences in the field of Criminal Justice, and were very knowledgeable about the learning material. Not only was it a great learning environment, it was also a fun environment. The instructors set a stage for the students to WANT to be involved. It was a joy to go to school whilst attending Fortis. All the staff made it their goal to see you succeed. All were very personable, and it felt like being apart of a family. If you had any problems (I rarely had any) there were countless of individuals you could go see and get them resolved. I loved how they had award ceremonies after each semester. They recognized all our efforts and hard-work, and it was always a great feeling to be one of those persons. The atmosphere was always positive. I've made lasting friendships not only with other fellow students, but instructors as well. If you are thinking about attending Fortis College, I encourage you to enroll. It was the best decision I made. I'm now attending a University to obtain my bachelor's degree, and many of the credits I received at Fortis transferred. So if that is one of your worries, worry no more.Seema Hagen

I started my education here when it was NIT in 2001, the instructors were great knowledgeable, and I was placed in a job on the day of graduation. In 2004 I returned to upgrade my Diploma to an Associate Degree, I only had to retake 1 course and my Gen Eds and was completed, again the instructors were fantastic, knowledgeable, and truly provided me the help I needed to succeed one on one, this is something I would not have received from a big University. I have been employed by Fortis since 2005, as an instructor, and in the mean time went back to college for my Bachelor's and Master's at another University, however that University accepted all of my credits from my education at Fortis. I am grateful for NIT/Fortis in all they have done to help me on my journey from Financial Aid to Career Services the experience was great!Melissa Fullen

I graduated from this college in 2012, and my mother also graduated from this college several years ago. My mother and I both had a great experience while attending Fortis College. Fortis College teachers and staff are very supportive of ALL their students to graduate and work in their career field. At this college location they had friendly and dedicated teachers .The classes were in a comfortable and more focused setting with up to about 20 students in each class. Barbara M as the Director of Career Services has been there for many years, she is very helpful with finding you a job in your field. Class of 2014 here. I thoroughly enjoyed my four years at UA. I was a short-distance commuter student from Highland Square, but still got a totally “normal” college experience. I had a good group of friends, a solid professional network (to this day), helpful professors, and attended a lot of fun campus events/parties/athletics. For an urban area, the campus is gorgeous and the facilities are relatively new (union, football stadium, wellness center etc.). I graduated on a Saturday and started a high paying job in my field that next Monday. Does it get much better than that? Not if you’re like most of us and going to school to get a job. If that is my measure of my time at Akron, then it was perfect. It was only after graduating that I realized how much my program was recognized nationally for its quality and outcomes. My only complaints were the weather and city; two things of which UA has no control over. The city of Akron is objectively not that nice of the place (look up those reviews), nor is it an easy area to start a good career. Most of the city is dilapidated, low socioeconomic status, dangerous, trashy, heroin-ridden, and lacking opportunity. I was not from Akron, so this was a bit depressing for me. If you’re from NEOH, you’re probably used to this and it won’t effect you. That said, UA is a diamond in the rough in this town. I am male, but I never felt unsafe on the actual campus. Everything around campus is a different story. Be diligent anywhere south of Exchange St. A lot of negative reviews I see on here are from people who needed more hand-holding through the admissions and financial aid processes. NEWS FLASH: Financial aid sucks at every university in the US. It is a federal program and the process is the same everywhere you go. Most financial aid coordinators are paid like $12-$15 an hour, and that is also universal. You need to adjust your expectations for that process or vote for different politicians. I don’t know what else to tell you. All together, I’d recommend UA to most people depending on your field. It’s certainly way better than that other school down I-76 😉 Go Zips!Trey the Son of Chad

The campus is honestly really beautiful. I went here for my undergraduate degree and am now working on campus (not employed by the university, just located in an outside agency's office here) and I couldn't be happier. There are a lot of really great professors and plenty of things that go on during the semesters on campus.Ash Corrado

Very nice campus with flowers and stuff. And there's like, cool, big signs that make the campus look very professionally made. The campus is visually appealing, and there's many clubs to join. The Student Union is like a rich neighbourhood mall.Nick

I had an issue with a grant I was told I wouldn’t receive each semester for maintaining a 2.0 or above gpa. I was told it would come in monthly checks and then told it comes at the end of the semester in a bank mobile app. When I received my fall papers to sign it said I would owe the school 475$ without a grant. I took my copy in and they fixed it but when I got ahold of someone about the grant they said it goes to the school so I do not owe anything each semester. My only issue is I was told different, they said I would receive this grant to pay for books and things I’d need. I went too see joe today in financial and he explained that I was told wrong the grant is to cover the money I’d pay each semester. I will say he “made it right” the best he could for the miscommunication. I appreciate that but I hope this miscommunication can be avoided in the future with other students it was a frustrating issue.Felicia Shandor

I can’t say enough about this school. I took my stna training program here. Mrs. Myers-Nortey was my instructor. She is absolutely amazing!!! Her classes were lively. She always had us laughing. She also challenged us too with scenarios we could potentially see out in the field. Mrs. Myers-Nortey is a very knowledgeable nurse and instructor. You’d be a fool not to take her class. I passed my state test the first try after finishing the stna program. If you’re thinking about taking an stna training program, look no further.Xtradopamine !

I took my STNA classes here in Akron. The class was great yet i had an issue with one of the instructors. She smacked my butt while I was doing a skill when I reported it to Med-cert no one got back to me, I didn't even receive a generic message back. Good class, horrible experience, I won't be back simply because my sexual harassment issue was never even addresses so thank for that!Sabriah Brown
